Brazil

K. :)
@Zignd That is probably the issue.

@iSeth no, they won't :)
Believe me :D

@RolandiXor I wondered. :(

12:01 AM
maybe it only speaks Portuguese :P

Well I tried from the ppa and adding the deb lines in sources.list

can you ping google.com

yes

we need to sort out if you a dns issue or if its that host only
you have dig installed?

What is "dig"?
I have it installed.

it's probably a default program.

12:04 AM
@Zignd Open "Software Sources" and change the download country to United States

ubuntu.c3sl.ufpr.br. 207 IN A 200.236.31.4

yes change mirror IMO

Hey everyone just read the Adobe agreement "If you obtained the Software from Adobe ... Adobe grants you a non-exclusive license to use the Software in the manner and for the purposes described in the Documentation, as further set forth below." which means Adobe provided the download and serial, which grants you a license...

It might make download's slow, but it should work.
@mateo_salta well, they removed it before I came around so...
bbl

12:07 AM
hey @iSeth I just noticed that according to Wikipedia, w3schools has fixed the issues mentioned on w3fools...
@jrg and others, you might want to drop the charges :).
Though, I still say that anyone learning web dev should see multiple sources :)
OH BTW - I want to learn Qt/QML/Qt Quick!

Now should I update again?

/ramble

@iSeth I think there's an option to automatically pick the best mirror. Worked well for me.

@Zignd yes you need to update everytime you change mirrors

the direct links from adobe are still working... anyways time will tell.

12:09 AM
meh we have gimp
3

gimp is nice too :)

but I'm no artist so dont mind me :P

Ohh it's working now guys, thanks for helping me.

Q: Do we need a tool to help users providing information on their system?

gertvdijkAs you all know, a lot of questions on the site are being asked without proper information. For new or inexperienced users facing an issue, this is something I do understand. However, no matter how well we are trying to help them, a lot of questions will be cluttered with several comments asking ...

can 1-rep, new users also edit their closed q and ask to reopen it?

12:13 AM
@AskUbuntuMeta Yes, and this has been asked before...but I have no idea where that answer is

@AskUbuntuMeta Y U so slow.

@gertvdijk ask to reopen yes. edit - not sure

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I think you can always edit your own posts (unless it's locked).

That's fair, I just don't know

heya @Mochan!

this one's funny, but sad at the same time... askubuntu.com/q/237532/88802

@gertvdijk, about your messge to me about a comment I made saying "If you have found and answer..." etc., I beg to disagree. With all due respect, I don't believe it was ambiguous. It's very clear what I am saying. If they have found an answer - wherever they may of found it - they can delete the question. :\

@iSeth check the memes room iseth

@Mechanicalsnail Then what is Kanji, if it is not an alphabet?

12:26 AM
@Mochan what are you talking about? can you give me a link please?

@iSeth Hi~!
@gertvdijk Sure! ^^

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I saw it.

yesterday, by gertvdijk
@Mochan your comment "If you have found an answer or [...], please retract it yourself." here: http://askubuntu.com/q/154786/88802 seems to be quite ambiguous. I don't think one needs to retract answered q. here. you might want to add 'elsewhere' to this if you are using this as a pro-forma comment.
OH! @gertvdijk don't worry.
I jut reread what you said and figured it out XD

@RolandiXor That's great news.

@Mochan oh, that. yep. I guess you're using your own pro-forma comments?

12:28 AM
@gertvdijk Nah. I was copy-pasting one for about 5 uses.

@Mochan ok. it was not a big deal though. just a note, a 'heads up'

We are falling behind in the cleanup effort :(

@gertvdijk Yeah, I thought so. I just wanted to clarify :)
@iSeth Really?

yeah, over 700 to do.

Man.
I would help, but I'm busy today :|
In fact -- I gotta go. See ya!

12:31 AM
@Mochan Okay, see you later!

It has been there for a while, should it be closed as a bug? I think I gave the only reasonable answer askubuntu.com/questions/202333/…
or abandoned?

hrmmmm
idk know how to tell if its a bug, but its not abandoned yet.

okay. it's more a feature request than a bug. still that is a bug classification

I don't quite agree with opera... but good otherwise.

i agree with opera more than safari

12:42 AM
I think Safari is worse than IE... shrug

nah. they're just thinking a couple moves ahead.

shrug

Ah there we have the shrugs again...

when did they stop?

@iSeth haven't seen them for a while. no, I'm not going back in the transcript...

12:52 AM
they moved to the shrug-testing room

until @FEichinger and I fixed the script.

@Mochan A logographic script.

wat?
its back up?

yep

1:02 AM
I still don't think I should...

they are denying it's free, but they didn't change any wording or doing anything to stop it....
strange.

@mateo_salta have you tried installing it?

have it running on my ppc now!

huh, weird.

I did buy it way back when though

1:04 AM
go figure.

I'll download this one to see if they changed the agreement wording.

alrighty :)

cs2 is like 2 generations old right?
maybe 3

what is it up to 6 -7?
I have 4 on on my laptop.

i don't use adobe products beyond flash player...and the sun is setting on that one too

1:12 AM
hm the license file looks the same, though for sure they would change that.

Hello.

Hi @GeorgeEdison

One botched apt-get session and X11 wouldn't start.

@GeorgeEdison I had something to ask you... now I can't remember.
I know its not the first time :)

@gertvdijk I really like the meta post! Good job!! :) I hope we get some good feedback on this now!
@GeorgeEdison What do you think about his? meta.askubuntu.com/q/5722/10698

Q: Will ubuntu phone os replace android os?

CodeBreakerI recently find out that Ubuntu would be released on some smartphones and though I would like to test drive this OS on my phone (which is a Samsung Galaxy nexus with Android jellybean 4.2.1) I would like to know if I could switch back to android at a later date as I love the interface. My phone ...

sigh

@iSeth somebody actually upvoted it

oh, your right! :O

we should be able to flag these upvotes! haha

not like they are planing to let people just install it... they are going to sell ubuntu phones.

1:31 AM
no. it won't. that's the answer. would i rather have a phone with native ubuntu? yes. is it really a viable replacement? not so much

@Alvar: Very interesting.

:)

he has some facts

hm, nevermind then.
wait till Feb. it is then.

@Alvar: The tool needs to be written in Qt :)

1:36 AM
you can install ubuntu on some android devices now, however its not an easy task, nor will it ever be. so in theory yes they will be ok with ubuntu on android devices, however it will be better on the phone either way.

Ubuntu for Phones. Well. I hate it already.
"I'm pretty sure it's some sort of extension to Android" - No, you must be confused with Ubuntu for Android. The Q is about Ubuntu for Phones. It's confusing already not even being released yet. — gertvdijk 1 min ago
@GeorgeEdison yup, but does Ubuntu Desktop live image ship with Qt libs? PyQt/Pyside or only native Qt?

i saw it on the official website...they're trying to pair with vendors to do native ubu on phone without android. we're just not there yet in the dev cycle. at least that's how i read it.

@Mechanicalsnail I see, but I still don't see why you're making a big deal over it. It's complicated enough trying to explain Kanji.
I'm gone ;)

ease up peeps
3
they're blue b/c they're so chill

@AbrahamVanHelpsing what the heck is it?

1:39 AM
they're peeps

for android, on android, on a phone that was android?

all of the above eventually

they are marshmallow coated with colored sugar, mmmm.

again, just how i read it

@iSeth now even a second upvoted it...

1:41 AM
O_O

Peeps are marshmallow candies, sold in the United States and Canada, that are shaped into chicks, bunnies, and other animals. There are also different shapes used for various holidays. Peeps are used primarily to fill Easter baskets, though recent advertising campaigns market the candy as "Peeps - Always in Season", as Peeps has since expanded to include Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day. They are made from marshmallow, corn syrup, gelatin, and carnauba wax. History Peeps are produced by Just Born, a candy manufacturer founded in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, by Russian immigrant S...

o_O

@iSeth What the peeeeeeep!?

@LuisAlvarado ^^

Heya folks. finally fully here

1:42 AM
hehe @gertvdijk

peeps is also slang for "friends"

@iSeth ah. you also use 'hehe'!

Sure, sure :D

for the international audience that didn't get it

ease up peeps

@gertvdijk What's Full APT configuration btw? ;) (new comment)

1:48 AM
@Alvar don't mind the details please. I just meant everything in /etc/apt (or something like that)

@gertvdijk can we use synaptic package manager to see what the last installed packages was? just thinking here...

@Alvar proxy thingy, a natty line somewhere, that sort of stuff. the last package install is overly relevant in most cases.
spent too much time on meta again today.

@Alvar The best way to find out about what package management operations were recently performed is usually to consult files in /var/log. The most useful ones are probably /var/log/dpkg.log, /var/log/apt/history.log, and /var/log/apt/term.log.

@EliahKagan indeed.

@Alvar cat /var/log/dpkg.log* | grep "\ install\ " | sort

1:51 AM
@EliahKagan that was the information I was thinking of, a list of last installed / removed applications.

Let's discuss the details later if "the community" thinks it would be a nice thing to have. Tech details aren't important now/yet.

@gertvdijk This could actualyl be a really good application...
@gertvdijk true, more to sort out the things we want / not want.

If making an automated utility to retrieve information about someone's package management configuration, it would be a good idea to make sure it doesn't report any authentication information (for downloading paid apps, for example). I don't know where that's stored. It's not stored in log files though.

@EliahKagan yep, already thought of that too.
but that's not relevant right now to discuss imo

@EliahKagan that are some of the things you should be able to notice when you test adn design the program

1:54 AM
what's wrong with an awesome one-liner?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing too complex

@Alvar yup. later.
I'm off now... I shouldn't be awake by this time. bye!

the app is awesome-one-liners, and they're named. it's just a list of tasks that runs one-liners

@AbrahamVanHelpsing grep "\ install \" /var/log/dpkg.log* | sort

later all... need to sleep... cya! :)

1:56 AM
fixed :P
@AbrahamVanHelpsing rarely do you need cat with grep

that's fair. i keep cat-ing things i don't need to

I do now and again to

@Alvar: Good question... I'm not sure.

or echo things instead of < "that"

How different is the information useful to investigate non-bug problems a user has with an application, from the information useful to investigate potential bugs in an application?

1:58 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing drives me nuts when I see this for i in $(ls /some/path)

Will the Raring LiveCD ship with Qt5?

@strings that's a function of copy pasting from loads of examples online. people that learned that way built bad habits
myself included

we all do but that one is the one that bothers me the most

that's probably a website that should exist. script-isms that shouldn't exist.

bash , well shell scripting is not strict enough. but thats the nature of it I guess

2:01 AM
all languages have them. i was just broadening the net

atleast with bash you can set -ehu
unlike sh

2:35 AM
Hi all.

Bye @RolandiXor.
:P

@RolandiXor Hi!

\o/

Any suggestions for a project name?
I'm thinking "Ask Ubuntu Troubleshooter".

2:45 AM
"Project"

oooh, you took it on then?

Well... I'm willing to get it started.
My plate is very very full right now so I just want to register the name and throw some files in a repository.

I guess Ask Ubuntu Troubleshooter would work.

Okay, going once...
Going twice...
Done!

"Ask Ubuntu Data Stealer"
:P

2:47 AM
@iSeth "Minin' all day long!"

ok, lets go for it @GeorgeEdison!

Hello @jrg

@FEichinger lol

jrg
howdy

@jrg: You are just in time.

2:48 AM
o/

You will witness the start of something great.

jrg
eh?

\o

argh tabbed browsing makes me bad at multitasking

jrg
time for the start of the party?

2:48 AM
@RolandiXor O_o o_O

GPL3 okay for everyone?
GPL3 it is then :P

@jrg hi

@GeorgeEdison shrug

^--- There it is.

2:49 AM
wait, wait, wait.
just a min.
> What it should not do

jrg
ooohhh... shiny
@GeorgeEdison MIT

> Gathering endless amounts of information like the whole package database states, all logs, etc. This will have the opposite result: taking a lot of time going through all the output.

jrg
i refuse to contribute to projects that are GPLed, moral grounds.

okay, nv mind.

@jrg I refuse to create a bunch of MIT-licensed software :P

2:51 AM
looks okay now.

The GPL ensures everyone's contributions are available to everyone.
@jrg: Explain please :)

There are way too many different-yet-identical licenses.
3

jrg
He sums it up nicely: Basically, when I mean "free" (not as in beer), in the case of software, I really mean "liberty".
3
which is to say, do whatever the **** you want, i don't care.

@Mochan!

I screwed up my computer again~ anyone wanna help~?

2:54 AM
@jrg So, go with WTFPL then?

@iSeth @iSeth!

@GeorgeEdison Python or C++

@iSeth C++.

@Mochan I can try ;)

jrg
@FEichinger That really has no legal standing. I much prefer the MIT/BSD licenses.

2:54 AM
@GeorgeEdison oky.

@iSeth Yay!

@FEichinger The Unicorn Software License.

@jrg No license has any real legal standing ... And WTFPL is FSF backed.

@jrg Fair enough - switching to the MIT license...

Not to mention that a license does not need "legal standing". That's why we have a crapton of them to begin with.

jrg
2:57 AM
@FEichinger never knew that. I object to the FSF on other grounds, but it's more a personal problem than ethics.

They don't recommend it, obviously, but they list it and as such validate it.

jrg
@FEichinger and by legal standing, i mean "this license has been used in court at least once."

There is no reason to use a license that says "Do what you want" in court.
That would kinda defeat the purpose of the license, don't you think?

sigh

Oh, license discussions? No thanks.

2:59 AM
+1
