okay. another mock-up on "the tool"

There's a huge backlog of questions needing closure here in Regulators (going back well over a day). And commenting for the minority of them that may have been wrongly flagged. I again encourage anyone who wants to help to join us. Hazaa!

@EliahKagan will do

@iSeth Thx.

@gertvdijk - anyone that calls apparmor easy to implement is using it wrong

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah I know. I was laughing at that answer.

12:28 AM
i won't downvote it b/c it's trailing the other answers, but yeah

Hey guys
I invite all ubuntu pros to discuss this question goo.gl/L07lF Thx for your time and trying to help

A: What is apparmor?

Adeline DaleAppArmor is an effective and easy-to-use Linux application security system. AppArmor proactively protects the operating system and applications from external or internal threats, even zero-day attacks, by enforcing good behavior and preventing even unknown application flaws from being exploited. ...

check my comment and let the downvoting begin

I thought she did that.

@TuralTeyyubogluAliyev do NOT drop shortened links in chat

I almost want to post my comment here and star it with my sockpuppet, but I won't. Ethics are a pain in the butt.
removed in a joking fashion

lol
you didn't see anything

12:37 AM
yes. mine was for a couple of particular trolls and a statement against someone purposefully using a sock to make a point instead of man-ing up

nope.

@TuralTeyyubogluAliyev good grief. short answer: no don't do it.

WAT? that's still renamed?

do you remember when?

no, i remember GE saying something about it

12:40 AM
I think someone flagged the real one, it doesn't post anymore

so any movement on the GE troubleshooter? poke @gertvdijk
@iSeth - you must have gotten a BEASTY amount of rep out of that apparmor answer. 24 upvotes is like 10% of your rep total

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah I did.
but I also put alot of time into it.

i'm not mateo, and np. being confused with higher beings is a compliment ;)

oops sorry

also, a copy protection mechanism i have to use directly to detect virtualization finds vmware but not wine. it made me chuckle. a lot.

12:44 AM
Ah, you are almost 2K @iSeth

@mateo_salta yep. I'm really trying to reach 3k. Then I won't care so much

I slowed down a bit at 2k

he will be in 23 hours or so

but then it was Christmas, and I got a part-time job, so that was not the only reason

and the meta-Q is actually making me thinking about not bothering to write one.

simma dahn naw. if you think your idea is better, build it. if you build it they will come.

oh, nice ui, don't give up @gertvdijk

@AbrahamVanHelpsing that's your lens thingy

yes. that was me

so... what about it?

is there a master question for the common diagnostic information we use on the site?

@mateo_salta there's this hardware faq q
don't recall where it is

12:51 AM

Q: I have a hardware detection problem, what logs do I need to look into?

Jorge CastroI am trying to ask a question about getting my hardware to work but I don't know what information to add to my question to get help, what do I need to do?

this one?

i built it. they came. unity development list saw it and is building one of their own with lens descriptions.

the benefit is the same. it's fixed.

a dollar or two might have been nice, but still. it's fixed

back

@AbrahamVanHelpsing ah okay. :)

is there a way to logout of a desktop through tty, I logged into scrotWM without a Meta key...
and auto login...

afaik there isn't besides killing it with fire
anyone going to be in vegas in the next 30 days? i've got rewards points that are expiring...
they were supposed to apply it to my hotel room and didn't :/

Should this answer be removed? it's a copy of the wiki and it has no source reference. askubuntu.com/a/238018/10698
@AbrahamVanHelpsing nice comment btw.

@Alvar I think edit it to include the reference.

I love wiki-quotes. They get inaccurate wiki's fixed. Lack of citation is a problem though.

wow this is cool kernel key combos - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key

@AbrahamVanHelpsing which wiki is she quoting?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing so just copy-paste form a wiki is OK?

1:05 AM
@Alvar No, its not.

@Alvar yes. as long as you cite it

@iSeth comment

ah, duh!

@AbrahamVanHelpsing hmmmm, cool... :)

and use the block quote, if it is word for word

1:06 AM
if there are inaccuracies in the wiki, the crossposting gets them fixed. this is a good thing.

so if you say: according to the wiki: "BLA BLA BLA!" link.

please approve my edit

yup. fine by me

it's ok?

1:07 AM
look, its a new user. She's also from China. Lets go easy on it.

I still like to see more than a quote and link dropped

@iSeth approved. but it needs one more approval from another user.. -.-

@iSeth I'ld let it ride until the bounty is settled. then edit it in later and i'll delete my comment. so it sits at negative instead of being promoted as "the system is sound, we just don't have profiles that work for firefox. why does a stock app in ubu opt out?"

@AbrahamVanHelpsing all right I guess.

selinux is simple too...if you have profiles for all your stuff like the NSA who developed it. unfortunately, the universe has usability concerns not under the purview of government agency/corporate funding

1:11 AM
Coding a project for school it's supposed to be presented tomorrow (Thursday), and my code isn't working just yet.. it's now Thursday 02:11, so in 14 hours it must be presented :(

can this get some votes?
the OP removed the post here an posted it there on my comment.

@Alvar that.is.normal.
@iSeth @jrg

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah but it's not fun! just found some code that said "if the student doesn't exist in the list, add a new course to that student" this is making me worried :/

i've been putting off some php egrep for a while. it's one of those failbucket starting point types of things though

that was the point, it was revised...

1:14 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing ??

when he gets the ping he'll see the referenced question. he's the resident ruby guy. he might have useful input

well this is a school project in Java (yes I know, everyone here HATES Java, but I don't.

@Alvar I don't.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing K

@iSeth then you are the first!

@Alvar i hate java for everything useful. that does not include school

1:16 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing haha
it's a good language for beginners.

it's a good language for lots of things that don't include usage

Android is awesome and its written in Java

android is a happy mistake. it should never have happened

I guess you have an Iphone :/

i have a disposaphone

1:19 AM
:)

:)

i don't like iOS either. i want native only and a real solution. not sandboxing per app for a niche platform. universal solutions are gold.

those are nice in their own way.

iOS did one thing well. A pleasing easy to navigate UI.

@Flabricorn +1

1:21 AM
I for one don't like iOS's design.

if only i could sue for tree logic. wait, nobody patented it directly yet WIN

I personally prefer the aesthetics of b2g, but hey, there's a reason we have a bazillion mobile operating systems.

I don't like Android it's too messy. That's Why I like iOS, it's easy and simple to use! Exactly what you want in something you are using EVERY day, and when you are really tired and/or stressed.

1:23 AM
I'm having a bit of trouble determining whether there is still interest in my troubleshooting app.
There seems to be a bit of a division here in regards to that.

I feel that aesthetically, the moment that wallpaper was allowed on any mobile that has an overlaying menu, or application section, it gets messy.

@GeorgeEdison there is!

i like it. i was only poking at @gertvdijk

@iSeth What do you feel is the best way to go here?

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing eh?
@Flabricorn sup?

1:24 AM
I don't want to waste time on something nobody will use.

@GeorgeEdison I liked @gertvdijk suggestion more than yours...

@jrg Aha!

jrg
@GeorgeEdison wat?

@Alvar Which was...?
@jrg What's your opinion? (On the troubleshooting app.)

@GeorgeEdison Are we talking about the meta question?

1:25 AM
<-- gets real quiet

@Alvar Correct.

@jrg Hey, just cleaning the famed espresso maker of it's sludge... it would seem that automatic grinder = sludge.

@GeorgeEdison just grab stuff that we would ask the OP to do. i.e. lspci lsusb etc

+1 for taking a broader look. "we're trying to reach as many people possible at once, rather than one-on-one support." <-- best part of your answer, imo! This makes me believe something fundamental has to change about what we should accept here as questions indeed. — gertvdijk 10 hours ago

@mateo_salta that's a new one :S

this is what concerns me most now.

is there a new new one?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing please remove downvote askubuntu.com/a/238018/44179
we only want one.
please :)

1:27 AM
So...
Continue with the project?
Can I interest anyone in setting up a daily build recipe on Launchpad? :P

jrg
@GeorgeEdison My opinion is that you absolutely have to use things on the default install. It needs to self-contain itself in a single .py file/portable binary. It needs to be cross-arch, so 32, 64 and arm. lastly, you've got to make sure that it saves the output to a .txt file on a USB stick so when you reboot to windows/get to your other machine, you can add it to your quesiton.

@GeorgeEdison this answer meta.askubuntu.com/a/5723/10698

jrg
@Flabricorn cool!
@GeorgeEdison and that, is my long-winded way of saying if you can make it work, then by all means, go right ahead.

@jrg Well... I can do all but one of those I can do all of that.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison and which one is that?
keep in mind if it's just a .py, it'll run anywhere there is a python interpreter.

1:28 AM
So what you're saying is... just have three self-contained binaries that people grab?

jrg
what i'm saying is have a single .py file that people grab and it already has +x set.

(One for i686, one for amd64, and one for ARM.)

deb?

jrg
so you're all ok. :P

@iSeth there's only one there now...

1:29 AM
@jrg We can't use Python.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison why not?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing thanks

The only GUI toolkit that ships with Python is Tkinter.
Tkinter is almost as evil as Perl.
2

@GeorgeEdison if you can't use python you're doing it wrong

jrg
@GeorgeEdison oh?
what about the GUI toolkits that ubuntu ships with?

1:30 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing It would be a bad idea anyway since it would require us to combine what should be in multiple .py files into one.
Bad design - hard to maintain.

jrg
python doesn't have QT bindings?

It does... but you might as well be using Qt in C++ then :P
Performance will be better and plus I am actually familiar with it.

just smh.

@jrg loads, but not on the live image shipped

jrg
sure. i don't care, just make it runnable everywhere! :P

1:31 AM
it must run in this environment: releases.ubuntu.com/precise/…

jrg
@Flabricorn so i saw your tweet, and joined in. twitter.com/jrgifford/status/289182600680067072

all it needs more needs "ship it with the tool" which we want to avoid of course.

@jrg Oh cool, yeah I love reading depressing sarcastic twitter feeds from mars.

jrg
@Flabricorn he's very good.

@jrg He's also one of the few actual non-humans if we're looking at flesh vs. machine.

jrg
1:34 AM
@Flabricorn right.

Supper - BBL.

jrg
anyway, he's good. I have him sent to my phone. one of 3 people. :P

Yay! 25 votes on Apparmor! There's a badge for that :D

@iSeth YAY BADGES!

@iSeth congrats!

BADGE-A-MAGIGS?

Thanks @jrg @gertvdijk :)
@Flabricorn something like that
BBL

jrg
oh crud. there goes my free ec2 instance.

I hate EC2
it steals CPU time I thought I had.

jrg
good thing i got our VM server set up at home, i can move my compile box downstairs. sigh
wow, it's been a full year. wow.
amazing how time flies.
@Flabricorn: what are you doing saturday? are you swimming? or do we want to try and meet again?

oh, i was on the free tier for a long time.
@Flabricorn ok. feel free to take it off chat if you want, you have my phone number.

hmm my new silver badge haven't been added yet :(
@jrg I think the lot of votes are thank for your bounty. So thank you James! :)

@jrg I shall communicate with you through the magical bandwiths of the the cellular networks.

jrg
@Flabricorn excellent.
@Alvar :)

Can someone tell Google Play to stop emailing me?
lol

Dear google play services, there is a lovely young man named Seth, he is currently suffering from an abundance of emails from yourselves. Please stop. It isn't nice.

1:45 AM
@Flabricorn ROTFL
Does anyone know if retags count as edits? It says "so and so edited so and so long ago" so I guess they do...

@iSeth yeah, but you are in a special situation right now

@mateo_salta talking to me?

do you keep buying stuff @iSeth or I think you can unsubscribe to the general ones
with the tag edits...

@mateo_salta ah, that. Nah, I was only testing a android port to a WM phone.
I understand I can unsubscribe
It was just irony.

I got linaro ubuntu on my cubieboard!

1:54 AM
@mateo_salta OOOOO, Cubieboard.

@mateo_salta That looks better than a Raspi.
Though I'd still buy a Raspi...

yeah, just started doing linux stuff with it, too busy playing angry birds

Q: Ubuntu server with desktop or desktop with xampp?

Sein OxygenI'm building a render farm and wanted to use it like a little server for my home. The main question is: What is better? really interesting question

Somehow I got it stuck auto-starting into scrotwm... anyone know how to get back to login screen by tty

1:58 AM
I want to know that too

It's using lightdm

I always just do sudo reboot but that's no fun

so I think there was some way...
well with auto-login(i should say) that won't work, so I either need to edit files like mad or kill the session and get back to something else to logout.

edit what files?

?
that is the problem i'm facing

2:01 AM
ah, OK.

jrg
you turned on autologin?
so you want to turn it off.

ahhhhhhh, yep, but only with tty, because I started a useless wm

jrg
can you get to a tty
and then export DISPLAY=:0.0
and then do unity --replace&
and then switch back to tty7
and then log out that way?
that's how i would do it.

what about for lxdm
almost I think , yay
login screen! had to kill something with htop then it kicked in
thank you @jrg

jrg
ah, ok

2:10 AM
wow, xfce works smoothly on this

Back.
At the risk of duplication, I'm going to write another question on Meta.
We really need to clearly define what we're doing here.

yeah, and switch over to what we want (information command wise) instead of how to do it
YEah, composting on xfce works!

2:26 AM
@mateo_salta service lightdm restart . but if you have autologin enabled that wont work. edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf check that is correct file. recalling from memory here.

Q: Ask Ubuntu Troubleshooter - Defining a Tool that New Users Will Use.

George EdisonThe need for this question arose out of this answer. We can easily post a comment asking the user t...

A: Do we need a tool to help users providing information on their system?

gertvdijkYes, we need one. A simple one. Audience New and inexperienced users. Ready for first encounter with Ubuntu. Ubuntu Desktop use related. Running any supported Ubuntu release. @GeorgeEdison I think it's way too early to start that discussion already.

@gertvdijk What are we waiting for?

I like it @gertvdijk
I don't think we're waiting for anything

What we're waiting for is a list of commands, etc.
It's never too early for planning.

@GeorgeEdison I feel we didn't decide yet what road to go. I'm still open for an answer by Jorge stating: no, don't bother because of reason X, Y, Z. And I believe we're making a tool for a support channel we are not.

lol
Jorge always has nice input.

2:47 AM
lol, the linaro background is a screen shot from powerpoint

It's not like we need this tomorrow.

@gertvdijk , think of it as market research, we want a program of this type, so what type of information gathering is most important to include, we vote on that while both of you perfect the designs and interfaces, If one donsn't work out for reasons yet unknown, you still have the information of what options will be important.

@mateo_salta okay. true. but then the meta-Q should be changed to something more general.
@mateo_salta like: "What are useful commands/ways to get specific hardware info for 'the tool'?" (with tool undefined, just pointing the other Q, rather than a specific design.)
@mateo_salta @GeorgeEdison I like the parallel/speed in it, though, but just don't run into conclusions, with other Qs. I don't feel quite happy with that.

@iSeth flagged, but only after I ordered a bag :(
