well, could be an option If I re-install it, and turn off the crash messages...

computer cam with all 4 used already

@mateo_salta silencing out crash messages aint a solution usually.

jrg
@iSeth i solved that.

well, when the messages don't have any info...

@iSeth Extended partitions, LVM, extra disk, ... I'd do anything to avoid Wubi.

2:01 AM
and everything else works just fine

Alright, it works. But ... Now it doesn't help anyone except for me, because adding buttons doesn't work :D

Q: My laptop already has 4 primary partitions: how can I install Ubuntu?

Carlos CámaraI would like to install ubuntu alongside windows 7 in a HP G62 Notebook. Although I have installed ubuntu as a dualboot many times I found out that this model has already four partitions. SYSTEM (NTFS, 199MB, used 66.59MB) Partition without any tag: NTFS (579GM, used 129GB) RECOVERY (NTFS 1...

I WROTE THE BOOK er, answer ON THAT!
3

@mateo_salta ok. shrug
@jrg lol

Also: wat.
shrug wat.

jrg
no, seriously.

2:02 AM
@jrg If I erase any of the partitions or change them to extended it would break the MBR link in the BIOS to Recovery and HP_TOOLS

jrg
@iSeth have you looked into this?

use GPT never have to worry about that :P

@jrg a little. yes Reading answer now

might screw you over for windows though.

jrg
because i find it hard to believe that A. it would have been designed that dumb, and B. you actually need HP_TOOLS.
besides, you also have a beefy machine. just do what i did, and virtualize your windows install.

2:04 AM
@iSeth is it one of those computers that uses all the primary partitions

@strings that's my problem. @jrg I can't virtualize, I NEED windows. I have been thing about moving HP_TOOLS to cd
@mateo_salta yeah :(

jrg
:(

nice answer. Upboats for @jrg.

I thought we had a q on that, I seem to remember...

2:05 AM
@iSeth what awful reason if I may ask?

I think @jrg answer is pretty sound

jrg
@mateo_salta right, i linked to it above.

oh....

jrg
ok, so this update that just came through in precise will mean one of two things: Either it will kill my ATI card, or i will go and jump to quantal on it if the kernel update works.
place your bets on this round of ATI Card Drama!

@gertvdijk for the rest of my family to use and for school apps. and I just don't want to

2:06 AM
I'll go with the card, 12.10 killed my small box

@jrg ATI card :O
Look at this... crazy.

jrg
the exact update is: linux-headers-3.2.0-36.
i'm running 3.5 on my quantal box, i might be safe.

@iSeth what's crazy? the low amount of reviewing to be done?

api headers should not break anything

You know what I did? I removed the Pantheon packages but forgot to remove the PPA's, than updated :/

2:08 AM
api rarely have changed since 2.6

jrg
@iSeth nice, they are doing as good a job as we are. that new /review is cool.
@strings idk, 3.5.x is broken with X on my ATI card in quantal. :(

kernel is another story

jrg
ok, updating. see you on the other side.

what I mean is if its just a header upgrade it will be harmless

jrg
nono. i can point to one update: The kernel update.
if i update everything else, it's functional.

2:09 AM
@gertvdijk They are the second busiest site in all of SE and they have less to do than we do.

jrg
i spent a full saturday pinning this down.

so there is a kernel update?
linux-image vs linux-headers
generally they should both update.

oh wait, forgot the day just started in UTC

jrg
it's the post release kernel update in quantal that kills everything.

define everything haha

jrg
2:10 AM
@strings there was a full kernel update, was just including that one package for the sake of brevity.

ah ok

jrg
updated. rebooting. if it works, great! otherwise, i'm going to be installing fedora on that box and just be done. :P

what the issue with ATI and this update?
or your just worried it might break?

jrg
i'm worried it will break.

meh

2:12 AM
I haven't tried fedora in a while, how is it fairing

jrg
since i had it break in quantal.

same card?

jrg
@mateo_salta it's cool.
@strings yessir.

BBL

@iSeth yeah somehow new users there can actually write questions and answers there.

2:12 AM
what was your fix for that?

jrg
a reinstall.
of precise instead of quantal.
had to do with the "legacy" drivers from AMD.

ah the card is older?

jrg
it's about a year and a half.

oh thats not old

jrg
well, idk how old the actual card is now. the laptop itself is a year and a few weeks.

2:14 AM
the driver from amd is a ubuntu package?
or your got if from ubuntu repo?

jrg
it's a radeon HD 6320.
got the .run from amd, passed it the options to build a .deb, it built a .deb, installed the .debs.

does it use dkms ?
aka jockey

jrg
ew, no jockey.

ah good
worst case you have to rebuild and install it
my guess is it will be fine

jrg
thank god for nmap and ssh. :P

2:16 AM
no tty even?

jrg
nope

just disable modset when it does that

jrg
ok, rebooting. i get the ubuntu splash screen!

I'm assuming its using KMS

jrg
and we have lightdm.
well, i might go ahead and do the quantal update now.

2:17 AM
single mode will fix lightdm
but if you have a borked KMS you need to disable modeset

jrg
ok

google how to do that for ATI
I forget the exact syntax

jrg
that's just a kernel flag, right?
nomodset

same with single mode

jrg
or whatever

2:18 AM
right
ctrl e, edit your flags then ctrl b

jrg
ok

but ya good to keep ssh running then just use that . what I tend to do
but I'm abit of console freak so I hardly notice if I dont have X
KMS can be an issue though.

@jrg: Uhm...

jrg
i found always having an ssh server on it was useful a long time ago.
after i needed to get a file from my laptop at home, while i was at work.

Trust me - you don't want me to write a single "dead-simple" .py file that only uses standard libs.
The only GUI toolkit that ships with Python is Tkinter.

jrg
2:22 AM
@GeorgeEdison standard ubuntu libs.
if it isn't in a default install, you really won't want to deal with it.

Do the Qt4 libs ship on the LiveCD?

jrg
idk.

@jrg this is nothing though, back in the day when it was a static kernel. kernel rebuilds and upgrades where much more hairy :P

If not, who do I yell at to get them included?

jrg
@strings i'm very happy with modern day linux.
i used DSL for a few weeks.

2:23 AM
aye

@GeorgeEdison libqtgui4 4:4.8.1-0ubuntu4.2

Yahoo!

@jrd iirc even DSL uses a intramfs actually think the whole thing runs from intramfs

jrg
@strings right
they are good with that one.

@jrg: So if I drop back to Qt4 from Qt5, we're good to go?
I bet if this executable is small enough, we could talk someone into getting it included in the Raring DVD :)

2:27 AM
I use to have one static kernel fallback, and then I would try my kernel rebuilds pray they worked. if it failed switch back to the old one. but this was pre initramfs as well

jrg
@GeorgeEdison probably. how long with Qt4 be around in the standard libs?

Good question. I'm betting it will be here for at least the next release and the release after that.

jrg
then you're ok.

Qt5 adoption will be slow.

ya qt4 will be around for long time

2:28 AM
yeah, Qt3 has only just really dropped.

Q: where I can post my request to no removal qt3 libraries from next ubuntu releases?

karolszkI know that ubuntu takes 'debian sid' packages to bake next ubuntu and I know that Debian developers currently obsoletes qt3-libraries. Unfortunately I'm still need it because in my company we still use qt3 libraries for our project.

Extra bonus - this will run on other platforms. Why is that important? Well the program can contain two parts - the wizard that gathers the information (which doesn't need an Internet connection) and a small utility that uploads the data to Pastebin, etc. (which does need an Internet connection).

like... sigh.

The utility can then be run on other platforms.

even I'm getting bored talking about "the tool" now.

Okay...

2:31 AM
ah, nice thought, run it and leave a portable app to usb to do the sending on windows or mac if that is the only other machine they have (if i understand right)

@mateo_salta Exactly.

I'll be gone. see you around later

ah, there is a new phone question.
ah man
0
Q: Is it possible to write Ubuntu Phone Apps in Python?

ErwinI would like to know if there will be a SDK or something like that for writing Ubuntu Phone Apps using Python language. I read that C and C++ were the chosen languages for native apps developement but it would be nice to write apps in Python too.

alert(send);
alert("true");
alert(send == "true");
Result: true, true, false
How?! Q_Q

2:40 AM
back
@FEichinger I <3 JS for weird make no sense errors
@GeorgeEdison Have you seen the stars?

I'm reading the checked state of a checkbox.

two rights make wrong?

I assigned this value via code - as a string value "true"

@iSeth Stars?
6

Now I read the checked value. Compare it to a constant string "true" ... And I get false.

2:41 AM
@FEichinger Wait.
Is this JavaScript?

3 hours ago, by AbrahamVanHelpsing
@GeorgeEdison is pure awesome, so if anyone is going to build it he will.

@GeorgeEdison Yes.

;)

@FEichinger What are you trying to compare?
You do realize that there are two comparison operators in JavaScript?

@GeorgeEdison Essentially element.checked == "true"

2:43 AM
Then you probably want:
element.checked == true
JavaScript has a boolean type.

That works, yes. But it shouldn't.
Because a few lines above, I do this: element.checked = "true"
That's why JavaScript makes no sense. At all.

but then it would be looking for the text 'true'
not if it is true, right?

But if I assign a string to the property, it should come out as a string as well!

Let me try something here.

what is the value of send?

2:45 AM
send = element.checked

and that value is "true"

@GeorgeEdison FYI There aren't any suggested edits for meta, so I can't edit you post yet.

can you do string comparison like that in JS?

So, we have:
element.checked = "true";
send = element.checked;
alert(send == "true");
And the alert gives me false in that case.

does it do it in a if statement?

2:47 AM
Here, I can explain it to you.

does it strip out the quotes as it puts it through

JavaScript performs a number of limited "automatic" type conversions.
For example, running the following will output "402":

psuedo code if you will if (send = "true") { alert("OK") }

alert(40 + "2");
The reason for this is simple: the "40" is converted to a string and prepended to the "2".

I get that. That's perfectly valid.
But how what should be "true" == "true" turns into false, I do not get.

yes thats an operation not a comparision though

So when you assign "true" to the property, it is converted to a boolean.

can you double quote it ""true""(just kidding)

@GeorgeEdison And the moment I assign a boolean true to checked, it doesn't register the checkbox as checked anymore. Which is why this makes no sense.

true == "true" , false

2:51 AM
I'm getting it to work ... Somehow, at some point ... But along the way I keep bashing my head against the wall over how ridiculous JS is.
2

@FEichinger its not type safe, yep totally agree with you

@mateo_salta Yes. But checked = true does nothing while checked = "true" ticks the box.

why cant it use true instead of "true"

@FEichinger You'll learn to like it eventually.

2:52 AM
@GeorgeEdison ... Okay, now it's just weird.

@strings that's the point :P

haha its a feature!
2

@strings It should. That's how it's supposed to be. My code only liked it the "wrong" way, though. :P

Is it working now?

status = "element.checked"

2:54 AM
do you have to quote that to make it boolean?
if so thats nuts
..... just saying.

@GeorgeEdison Not yet, but I'm trying around ... I'll find the error eventually.

oh, I don't know anything about coding just ignore me
4

Is @jrg around?

... Now if(1) doesn't compute. wtf?

umm I dont think you want qoutes
at all

2:57 AM
Yeah, no quotes.

yeah, I think "False" should be False

If the Boolean object has no initial value, or if the passed value is one of the following:

0
-0
null
""
false
undefined
NaN
the object is set to false. For any other value it is set to true (even with the string "false")!

That's correct.

And makes total sense.

jrg
@iSeth yeah?
whats up?

2:59 AM
Until it randomly doesn't work that way for no apparent reason.

I can see this causing problems

jrg
i'm a little busy, i'm geeking out over my todo list setup. ;)

but yes once you know dont qoute anything boolean you should be ok

@jrg nothing big. Just wanted to point out @JorgeCastro accidentally made a on meta because he forgot the 's' in
Didn't think it was worth a question

Anything in a string will cause it to be evaluated as Boolean true.

jrg
3:00 AM

@jrg lol

jrg
@iSeth ok, lemme go be confused for a little bit, and then figure out what you're talking about.

@jrg you don't understand? or you joking?

thats some manly qoutes there

jrg
@iSeth can you show me the exact case?
i'm confused.
i can't find where he edited anything like that.

3:02 AM
What are we talking about now?

jrg
jorge making a edit mistake.

Q: Do we really need "release-upgrade"?

Jorge Castrohttp://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/release-upgrade This tag makes no sense to me, it looks like it's just a subset of what should just be in "upgrade" anyway, should we just merge/symlink it?

jrg
oh, it wil disappear inside of 48 hours.

that is the only question with
thanks :)

jrg
thanks

3:04 AM
Okay. Adding buttons works, removing doesn't. But I think I might have a solution for that.

jrg
cya later guys. :-)

@jrg Cya! Didn't mean to pull you in for nothing sorry :/

How is that different from this?

It's uses buttons!

3:07 AM
Mine has a button.

It uses multiple buttons!

hehe

Nah, seriously, it was just a result of the shrug button madness.

To anyone interested: We can use some some help with the clean-up here in the Regulators room. There are many questions that should be closed. (And if you think certain ones shouldn't, we need to hear that too.) Please join us! (Especially if you have 3k rep but if not your flags are valuable too.)

There are only a couple of us in there now, and it's common for people to quickly run out of close votes when the volume of questions to close is large. (I'm out of close votes for 20+ hours for example.)

3:13 AM
Silence is bad :/

user image
3
That's what mine looks like.

@iSeth Silence gone.

It's easy to customize too.

Yay.

@Flabricorn :)

3:17 AM
You can add, edit, and delete your own messages.

thats what @FEichinger 's does too :/
ah well.

Two scripts competing never hurt :)

no I guess not :)

@GeorgeEdison Not yet.

That's what drives people to improve their products.

3:20 AM
just ask microsoft

lol

@strings: I did try this already ; it even does not work when I try to middle click in the same xterm! Even that does not work. (One typically does this when a command-line program suggests another command in the text-output) — false 6 mins ago
two line answer 400 lines of comments haha

Cya guys, time for sleeping.

laters

@Flabricorn Cya!
:)

3:30 AM
@iSeth what buttons does it give you

@RickGreen-Turbo custom

in Ask Ubuntu General Room, 27 mins ago, by FEichinger
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/156028 v0.3 is up and working!
@FEichinger took the script and made that ^^

What is the best way to install?

@RickGreen-Turbo Firefox or Chrome?
(this would have been off-topic in the other room)
did you get my message?

3:38 AM
@iSeth wat

@RickGreen-Turbo in here
in the other room @RickGreen-Turbo

Huh??
How do you remove them.....

@RickGreen-Turbo it depends on what browser you are using.
we should do this in the General Room

firefox
really
want to remove the buttons

17 messages moved from Ubuntu Regulators
@RickGreen-Turbo okay, do you have GreaseMonkey installed?

3:43 AM
yup 0

okay, just a min. let me fire up firefox
@RickGreen-Turbo click on the little arrow next to the monkey and click 'Manage User Scripts'

Rolled back to Qt4.

@RickGreen-Turbo then find the script you want and click either 'disable' or 'remove'
@GeorgeEdison Oh? Qt5 not ready yet?

not gonna happen

3:46 AM
It's awesome but it's not on any of the CDs yet.

@RickGreen-Turbo Huh?

I doubt it will be on the Raring DVD.

removed all the StackExch stuff

@RickGreen-Turbo OK.
@GeorgeEdison is it on the 12.10 one?

now have to reinstall

3:47 AM
@RickGreen-Turbo did you want to do that?

@iSeth No - it wasn't even released until the end of December.

@GeorgeEdison sorry, I meant Qt 4 on 12.10

@iSeth yeah but still remains. no way to edit? shrug

@RickGreen-Turbo Click "preferences" then "Edit this Script"

3:51 AM
Something really weird is going on with the script.

oh?

I also have two buttons that just don't want to disappear.
Well, for me removing the script temporarily solves that, though, so, might be totally unrelated.
You did refresh the page, no, @RickGreen-Turbo ?

guess so

@FEichinger restarted browser
just to flush it

Hmm ... Weeeeeeird.

3:55 AM
I removed the script, restarted, reinstalled, restarted and the "child" still remains.
haunting meeeee

... Wait ... Could you repost a screenshot?

@RickGreen-Turbo I had that too. Ended up I was running two scripts with the same name, and TaperMonkey showed one

... That is not my script.

3:57 AM
Huh??

That is iSeth's old one.

oh gawd you can spam that will?
not good, not good at all :P

@FEichinger that is my NEW one

My script should at best be responsible for >buttons< and >Wat???<
2

@RickGreen-Turbo can you give us a screenshot of the GreaseMonkey page?

3:58 AM
haha

hehe
(What are we laughing about?)

thats correct. But I want to remove Wat?? ->>> how

That's the one thing I am still working on ... While I'm trying to figure out why the fuck I still have a button that should've been wiped thrice by now.
Buuut removing the SECBU UserScript should solve it o.o

you cant wipe Beaker!
