12:00 PM
yup

@slhck yes, that's what I am thinking too.

@jokerdino yeah I also think so but I think my good days have been over.lol

@slhck I wouldn't bother fretting about it. Let it go.

Bob
@slhck Except pointing out exceedingly bad posts :\

@avirk heh :P

12:01 PM
@Bob: 3-4 an hour seems to work for me, edit rate wise

@Sathya Yeah, unless he's personally attacking someone there's really no point, let him be grumpy.

@Bob uh. you got to be careful now.. :p

@slhck right. And if it does get personal, flag away

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm going through ~35 posts with a broken link. This is going to take a while :P

@JourneymanGeek I was so close to surpassing you in rep, but I have nothing to answer :P

12:02 PM
@slhck: XD I MUST ANSWER MORE QUESTIONS!

@JourneymanGeek …… oooh, is it on now? :P

XD, everyone start DV-ing @jou

(actually i don't really care ;p)

me neither lol

@slhck Ask Ubuntu thanks.

12:03 PM
I was just looking at the elitist leaderboard users list and figured there wasn't much separating us anymore @JourneymanGeek

Wasn't i behind you at one point?
I actually stopped keeping track when i hit 25K ;p

@jokerdino I don't even have Ubuntu at this point :P
No, dunno, you probably weren't @JourneymanGeek

there needs to be an app that lets you do head on head graphs for SE sites ;p

@slhck You better get one. I am preparing a list of questions that you can possibly tackle.
Most of them have ffmpeg in them.

@jokerdino Ah, well I'm not particularly fond of the outdated Ubuntu packaged version of FFmpeg, or avconv, for that matter. But yeah, I guess I'll install 12.04 again soon. Had it for a while and then ditched it again because I needed the drive.

12:07 PM
hm
I do too, but i have too much things changing in my setup over the next few months

@slhck alright cool. Be thankful you are not on the ever stable Debian.

@jokerdino Haha… I only touch these for servers, really

@jokerdino: he could run sid ;p
and debian has a few nice things for a cli install now

Bob
Hm..
19 tabs, mostly Super User, 1.2GB memory usage... definitely got a memory leak!

@Bob FireFox?

12:10 PM
FF13?
Its got lower start up memory. then it goes wile

@slhck smart move, actually ;)
@JourneymanGeek Ubuntu imports packages from sid, iirc.

@Bob Pfft. use lynx.

sid is a rolling release
@jokerdino: i prefer w3m ;p
though i do seem to recall elinks does pictures

Bob
@tombull89 Yea, it was going well through version 10 or 11, but 12 and 13 have been crazy.

12:12 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, they fix bugs until they get bored.

@jokerdino: on the other hand, ubuntu has started to diverge a lot in other respects

@JourneymanGeek pictures? you sure it is a text browser?

use of upstart for example
well, runs in a terminal

yeah, unity, upstart, notify-osd, indicators, etc

Bob
o.O

12:14 PM
@JourneymanGeek i don't approve of that.

Bob
interesting error message in that screenshot: superuser.com/questions/40138/…
/nasdsadadsda ?

Bob
And restarting FF with the same tabs goes up to ~350MB

@jokerdino: actually i would find being able to do video/image stuff without x pretty useful

Bob
That's a nasty leak, about 800MB gone... 2/3...

12:19 PM
I just learned you get to keep your badges for deleted questions/answers. Interesting.

@JourneymanGeek oh yeah, ubuntu is moving to wayland from x.

Some of the stuff people got their *Great Answers*s for really devalues the badge :P

@jokerdino: so is fedora. when tho, and whether they go off halfcocked.
I don't have any of those :/

@jou hmm it depends on when those Nvidia makes drivers ;p

@jokerdino: Its better than it used to be
hands @jokerdino a RMS approved laptop ;p

12:27 PM
that i can't disagree

ALMOST completely open source...

I heard there was one..

@jokerdino: if there's more games, better graphics will come
@jokerdino: longsoon i think

funny you say that.
it is a cycle you know.
not sure about that.

@jokerdino: steam may get a linux port. HIB has linux ports for most games
change is coming

12:29 PM
steam is coming later this year or next year

but there needs to be a balance between linux/FOSS as an ideology (RMS style) and pragmatic development (as linus prefers)

Bob
20 posts to go
I'll finish it tomorrow :P
@OliverSalzburg has already finished the tag?!
You're fast.

@Bob No, I just did a couple.

Bob
Wait, it was @JourneymanGeek...
Was it?

12:34 PM
@Bob: partially
i did ~half

Holy cow
Did any of you ever use one of MS virtual labs?

74 i think

That's pretty amazing, I have to say

lol. I could have done it faster if i wasn't trying not to edit flood. I basically spent the whole weekend gaming, would stop, switch systems, edit, and go back to gaming ;p

@Sathya blames Nvidia drivers

12:37 PM
You just click a link and you're RDPing into a virtual domain set up just for you. With 4 virtual machines. A DC, 2 Exchange servers...
Crazy

@OliverSalzburg: that seems awesome

@JourneymanGeek Linus is the practical guy. I don't like RMS.

Bob
Gah.. what to do with this question?
1
Q: How do I delete a ‘locked’ file in Vista 64?

Daniel MouraThis question asks how to delete a locked file in Windows XP. The answers in there don't apply to Windows Vista 64. Is there some app like Unlocker that works in Vista 64?

@jokerdino amen.

Bob
The question no longer really applies, since Unlocker was updated to support Vista/7 and 64-bit a year or two ago

12:38 PM
This is cool. They give you tasks you can perform in the virtual lab, to learn use the software.

@Bob: there's also the registry tag and one other i'm working on right now
@OliverSalzburg: part of a course, or anyone can do those?

@JourneymanGeek Anyone can use it as far as I can see.

Bob
Should that kind question be flagged/closed?

IE only, of course :P

12:39 PM
I should try it next hols
boo ;p
I keep it installed tho

@OliverSalzburg your first task should be to extract the product keys from the VMs
Then publish them
Then they'll have to deactivate all their labs

Bob
@Paul Wouldn't they be volume licensed?

@Paul Pretty sure they use trial keys ;)

@Bob, @OliverSalzburg yes. But don't spoil my amusement

Bob
12:55 PM
Hmm...
I never knew Markdown could do links like that: superuser.com/revisions/5cbc606c-9c77-4258-b032-dae210dc71f8/…
I like his style.
>* unlock all* anyways

@Bob Cool.

1:22 PM
aaaaah … afternoon naps are the WORST

1:34 PM
@Bob Just copy product image and/or description into a quote.

1:51 PM
ugh. 5 rep from the repcap for the day. I donno if thats good or bad ;p

that's bad coz i was thinking of upvoting some of your answers

2:12 PM
So who is going to upvote me? :D

That makes me want to downvote you
:p

mumbles something

If anyone has 2 minutes, don't fancy bugging people in Ubuntu Chat room... Does anyone have 2 minutes to help me with Cron Jobs?

thanks man, we are so busy today
and so little personnel. :/
@wil i just stick to using GUI for cron.

2:22 PM
...
GUI.. For..Cron?

gnome-scheduler :P

HIERATIC. INFIDEL. TOMATO...
;p

@jokerdino It is Ubuntu Server... just trying to figure out if something has worked or not and having a few problems understanding :(

cron should be cli only
@WilliamHilsum: i think those cron directories are just on root's crontab

@JourneymanGeek :P:P

2:23 PM
see what i said on AU ;p

root is enabled, but, other jobs are working, I just can't figure out a good way to tell if these have worked or not :(
looking at that link now

Q: My email has been hacked, now what?

Nathan KoopI was asked this today by a friend, and not being an expert in this field all I could say was, Reset/change passwords Run antivirus Is there a good quicklist of todo's to ensure that things go "back to normal"?

That question will either have 100 upvotes tomorrow or be deleted :D

or both if Sathya sees it late.

@jokerdino :D

@WilliamHilsum: make a job that will make a text file in a known directory? ;p
echo "hourly has worked"

2:32 PM
@JourneymanGeek Well, that is what I did, but, it doesn't appear to be working... I am not sure why
I have

date > ~/william_tmp
but also tried /william_tmp and /tmp/william_tmp

@WilliamHilsum Where did you set up the cron job?
Like crontab -e or /etc/cron.hourly or /etc/cron.d...

@OliverSalzburg I used VI and saved a file in /etc/cron.hourly then I used chmod to change the file to 755
I can manually run the file and it works fine, I just don't know if it is being run every hour

What version of Ubuntu is this?
cat /etc/*-release ;)
Well, I just remember having some nasty trouble with the default Ubuntu cron setup around the 8.04-9.10 era.
Which only happened with scripts in cron.hourly and cron.daily

:/ How do I find out! ... It is one older than the latest LTS (server)

When I manually invoked them, everything was great. Even when running the anacron task manually, it was fine. It just never worked when run by the system.

2:42 PM
@OliverSalzburg That's cool, didn't know you could do that!
10.04.3
@OliverSalzburg other jobs "appear" to be working... and, this one probably is running, I just don't seem to have a way to tell if it really is

Oh well, I never found a solution for the issue anyway. I was under time pressure and just moved all the important tasks to the crontab of a user.
I just know it was terribly frustrating and horrible to debug.
@WilliamHilsum You could invoke anacron manually: cd / && run-parts --verbose --report /etc/cron.hourly
You could also just use --test
  --test print script names which would run, but don't run them.
I'd start with --test ;)

first time I have heard this commands... trusting you fully that my server doesn't implode! :) ... (I have been using Ubuntu now for a few months and love it, but, crazy just how much there is to learn)

@WilliamHilsum This is straight from /etc/crontab
17 *    * * *   root    cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly

@OliverSalzburg well, it isn't a dangerous script at all - all it does is ntpdate-debian + an echo to a directory to see if it has run (which I can't see if it has)

Heh, is this a VM possibly? :D

2:49 PM
@OliverSalzburg yeah, why?

I assume you want that cron job to get the time from running horribly out of sync? ;)

@OliverSalzburg not exactly... but yeah!

That's all very familiar ;D

it appears to be fine / doesn't go out of sync to often, but, we have a very strict firewall that blocks EVERYTHING by default, and our own NTP server - it turns out that no one changed the default NTP server on some servers, so, they haven't been synced for about 18 months/since they were built...
rather than just fix it, I fancy setting it to do every hourly... and, lol... that is the exact same here!!!
well, almost, and, I see a difference already -

To my understanding, ntpdate will not update the clock if it is too far out of sync.

2:55 PM

@WilliamHilsum Missing a shebang?

@OliverSalzburg you are right... but, I have manually put it in sync... and now I want this to run every hour to keep it like that
@OliverSalzburg shebang?

#!/bin/sh
In computing, a shebang (also called a sha-bang, hashbang, pound-bang, hash-exclam, or hash-pling) is the character sequence consisting of the characters number sign and exclamation mark (that is, "#!") when it occurs as the initial two characters on the initial line of a script. Under Unix-like operating systems, when a script with a shebang is run as a program, the program loader parses the rest of the script's initial line as an interpreter directive; the specified interpreter program is run instead, passing to it as an argument the path that was initially used when attempting to run ...

lol, like that nname

@WilliamHilsum We did that as well for a while, but it was problematic.
But maybe that's because these are 8.04 systems.
Even in such short intervals, the clocks could go horribly fast out of sync by a significant amount of time.

2:57 PM
@OliverSalzburg done it now, lets see if it works in 3 minutes, but, why does it work when I type ./ntpdate manually?

We ended up installing a time daemon on all clients.
@WilliamHilsum I assume it's because you invoke it from the shell, so the current default interpreter is used. But I have no real idea to be honest.

hehe... one minute left
I thought crontab was just per user, and cron was a separate process.. I didn't know all the things under cron folders ran as a crontab them selves...
if that makes any sense :/ - hadn't seen /etc/crontab until you just said above!

@WilliamHilsum The scripts in the /etc/cron* folders are run as root.
You can see that in /etc/crontab
The user-specific cron tables don't have a field for the user. They are implicitly run as the user who owns the table. At least, that's my understanding of things.

hmm... even with "shebang", it didn't create the william_tmp file, so, still no idea if it ran :(
@OliverSalzburg cool

@WilliamHilsum Did you check /var/log/syslog?

3:07 PM
@OliverSalzburg It's HUUUUGGGGEEEE
will try to look

I think i tripped off another easter egg

@OliverSalzburg can't see anything specific

will try that now

@OliverSalzburg should you not to post your comment as answer as OP got help from that.

@avirk I think Doktor J already had the right idea with his answer. I would repeat his answer basically with a little bit of my own experience mixed in. Didn't feel like it justifys an own answer.

:)

I'm very careful if there is a bounty on a question. I don't want to look like I just answered to grab it :P If I add another answer I would want it to be a substantial improvement over existing answers.

akiraWindows7 has a tool called cipher.exe, which can wipe the disk: http://www.ghacks.net/2010/06/21/wipe-yopur-drives-securely-with-a-hidden-windows-7-tool/ The command is simply cipher /w:x:\folder where you would substitute x:\folder for the location you want wiped, for instance your D:\ drive ...

@OliverSalzburg is this real answer to the Q?
I don't think it is.

man that looks dodgy

@avirk I agree with you. I believe it's spam.

Yeah that's why you edited it......
@OliverSalzburg now I'm seeing it grey why so?

@avirk Too many downvotes.
So people can focus on the proper content.

@JourneymanGeek that vote should be from you..........:P

@avirk: I take housekeeping stuff fairly seriously

4:35 PM
@OliverSalzburg - Any idea why the Hourly command is so small compared to the daily/weekly/monthly?
sorry, got rather distracted here

@WilliamHilsum What do you mean?

and, I just ran "cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly" and it appeared to run the command fine
in /etc/crontab - the hourly line is different to the others
the others all have test -x /usr/sbin/anacron

@WilliamHilsum Good question. Not quite sure to be honest.
But I have a suspicion ;D

Does this mean that hourly stuff doesn't get run by default :/
and also, why the hell is it 17, it just confuses me more, thought it should either be 60 or hours set to 1! Every time I think I have learnt something, there is a million more things to download

Q: Why does cron.hourly not care about the existence of anacron?

Oliver SalzburgThis question came up over in Root Access. Why does the default /etc/crontab not check for existence (and executable flag) of /usr/sbin/anacron for the hourly entry? My /etc/crontab: # m h dom mon dow user command 17 * * * * root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly 25 ...

:D
@WilliamHilsum I believe the default values are offset to avoid load spikes.
Because everyone thinks they should run their stuff on even numbers ;D

4:43 PM
Still, why is it set to 17 minutes instead of 60 :/ That has got me confused
@OliverSalzburg and cool! +1ing it!

@WilliamHilsum Well, otherwise it would always run on the full hour.
And the normal users will most likely put their cron entries on the full hour, because it's easiest to set up.

I don't suppose you can also ask about the 17 minute thing there, or is it just stupid? :/

So running at 17 minutes past the full hour makes sure that stuff is spaced out a little

ohoh
but, what controls the fact it will be hourly and not every 17 minutes? :/
And, just trying to understand that script... Why is it that

test -x /blablabla || (echo test)

shows test?

4:49 PM
sorry... asking too many things! it just seems that every time I try to understand something, 20 new things pop up!

@WilliamHilsum The hour part is set to * so it runs every hour.
17 * * * * means at the 17th minute of every hour on every day of every week of every month
While 25 6 * * * means on the 25th minute of the 6th hour of every day of every week of every month

@OliverSalzburg ahhh - ok, that makes more sense now... feel a bit idiotic now you explained it like that
always seems better coming from someone instead of a book

Well, that PowerPro question turned out well :D

5:26 PM
damn it... that script appears to work fine from running it via the command... I am going to ask a separate question...
today Ubuntu SE is going to have a sudden rise in cron related questions!

A: What is the story behind the default times set in /etc/crontab?

derobertUbuntu started in 2004, and is based on Debian. By then, the current crontab was present, so we get to trace through Debian history to find its origins. Here is the crontab from Debian 0.93R6 (November 1995). The hour is present, but the minute is different for the cron.daily entry: # m h dom m...

This goes deep :P
We might have to go to unix.SE :D

@OliverSalzburg that's cool

A: Why does cron.hourly not care about the existence of anacron?

ohnoanacron is running on a daily basis. It is not built to let jobs run on a hourly basis, so it is useless to test for anacron when an hourly job is started. The other regularly executed jobs should only be executed by cron, when anacron is not installed.

Awesome :)
I guess I never was fully aware that cron and anacron are two (possible mutually exclusive) applications.
I assumed that cron is itself isn't really in use any more and only serves as an interface definition, which, today, is implemented by anacron.
But, I guess, I was wrong :)

5:58 PM
... so, people should be calling them anacron jobs!?
and why am I still at work...
(I love this job... but, need to start going home earlier...)

7:10 PM
And... Cut myself 15 upvotes on Meta.SO, was asking for a new question title filter that was already implemented. :)
Filtering help me and help with, but seems help is already filtered.
I don't like the latter, but rather the former two.
I could perhaps ask to replace the latter by the former, but I doubt if that will go in.

7:36 PM
@nhinkle That is awesome. I hate puny 1366x768 displays. There's absolutely no reason for that resolution to exist other than being cheap with the hardware. :|

Q: Ripping TV episodes from DVDs – how can I know which stream belongs to which episode?

payoI'm ripping DVDs using a series of calls like mplayer -dumpfile foo$i.vob -dumpstream dvd://$i and using lsdvd to list the available streams to rip. Here is an example command I wrote for this for i in $(lsdvd 2>&1 | egrep "^Title" | sed -e 's|Title: \(..\).*|\1|g'); do mplayer -dum...

It's totally legit …

@slhck Sure is. For your own use/backups.

@sidran32 As I mentioned in the comments, even Jeff said that's fine.

Yup
IIRC, the Library of Congress even released a statement approving the use of tools to circumvent DRM for personal usage. Dumb way to do it but it should be legal.
DRM can suck it.

Absolutely :P

(except in rare circumstances where I think it's use is fine, like music downloaded but not purchased with Zune Pass :P)
Purchased music is DRM free, as it should be. If I didn't buy it, sure, restrict my usage of it all you want. I didn't buy it yet. :)
But DRM is the sole reason why Blu-ray sucks.
Unfortunately you have to live with it.
Oh, sorry... I mean DRM and Java. :P
