12:00 AM
@OliverSalzburg hehe
fyi, all fixed - the cron job was working fine... turns out I didn't have full path on echo / date, so it wasn't reporting... needed /bin/echo!
still, discussing in ubuntu chat at the moment as I am confused as to why that didn't raise an error

Huh
That's confusing
I never had to echo with an absolute path

Bob
@OliverSalzburg At what point does it become community wiki?

And, wasn't it just date > /tmp/something?

Bob
Wait, isn't echo built into the shell?

@Bob Yeah
And /bin/ should be on the PATH, shouldn't it?

Bob
12:03 AM
Then there shouldn't be an absolute path for echo... should there?

Unless your /bin/sh points to some crappy shell :D

Bob
I remember using echo * in place of ls after nuking my system, rm -rf / style (bash shell)

heh

Q: How can I tell if my hourly cron job has run?

wilhilI have created a file called ntpdate in /etc/cron.hourly #!/bin/sh /usr/sbin/ntpdate-debian date > /tmp/william_tmp date > /william_tmp date > ~/william_tmp echo test I also did Chmod 755 to this file. However, I can't tell if the file has run or not! The file is not created in any...

Yeah
You used date, not echo
Ah, reading the answer now :D
That makes sense. Good to know

Bob
...I'm going to check my Kubuntu installation. I'm quite sure echo doesn't have an executable.
Hm.. There is one. Wow.
/bin/echo --help
NOTE: your shell may have its own version of echo, which usually supersedes
the version described here. Please refer to your shell's documentation
for details about the options it supports.

@OliverSalzburg sorry, went afk... just reading your last one - sorry, very tired! (don't know how you cope...)... I was desperate, used echo and date in the end... tried everything I could think of in order to return "something"

12:14 AM
Well, I'm heading to bed too ;)

12:48 AM
@Bob: beats me. I don't get to play with such cool non training pants hardware ;p

1:48 AM
How did I get an enthusiast badge in SU?! @.@

lol
you've been on SU ?
hm, fun. Dell game memory issue beeps again. restarting it helped. Memory tests clean

hm I guess it is all because of Bob posting links to SU questions and I end up visiting SO.

2:30 AM
Or we have cookies.

Bob
2:42 AM
@jokerdino Do I really post that many links?

far toooo many.
you post enough links that I click on at least one. :/

Good morning guys!

@JourneymanGeek obviously not there its in INdia.................lol
So I' saying that from India to you all.....
BTW hwz you all?

confused ;p

2:52 AM
why?

thinks he needs to take apart and blow off the memory modules on the dell

Who?

i'm getting memory error beeps on boot, then i restart and its fine. two different memory testers say the memory is fine

@jokerdino you have visited SU for 30 days continually so you got that badge
@JourneymanGeek only beeps no message?

Bios error is just beeps

2:54 AM
An when you started to hear up that beep?

yesterday

Hmmmmm strange
have you tried to boot up with removing each stick individually?

this system isn't that critical, its getting switched over to being a spare spare in august
Not yet, no, I just got the time to do memtest+ and windows memory diagnostic so far

May be memtest+ could not get the error then its really good way to check them out by removing individually.

prolly over the weekend
it works after i reset it, so its not a high priority

2:59 AM
What to say about this

I can grab a spare system off the office if this fails too
Looked at the manual, 2 beeps is memory

And problem Cause for that is Faulty DIMM or defective system board.
However your office is very good care of his employee............
:)

;P

@avirk thanks sherlock

3:03 AM
family business, we have a few spare systems, i don't really get paid, but i have the freedom to redeploy anything thats not in use as needed

@jokerdino lol
me sherlock
hahahahahaha'

@avirk: I've troubleshot this system since i got it. I'm used to its quirks
starting from the fun video card failure ;p

@JourneymanGeek then I think your system has surely a thought that in whose hands I'm

just now he accepted it and toggle from the other answer...........:)
Feeling very happy.......
@JourneymanGeek dell also recommend this If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.

oh, i know what i'm doing, it just needs me to have the time ;p

Its quirks that's really funny ;P

3:12 AM
Every system has quirks eventually. Its a lot easier to work with computers when you realise this. Its not just about the manual

Is it normal to leave your computer plugged in when changing hardware?

Q: My computer was turned on in the midst of CPU change

Ellen DavisI was upgrading an old Gateway tower Pentium 4 1.7GHz CPU with a maybe 3.0? and I was ill prepared in that I didn't know about the little locking bar, and thus thought it was connected and powered up. Now the fans turn on but the hard drive is silent and it wont boot up. The question would be:...

o_o

o0
not on consumer grade hardware

@iglvzx I don't think its the good way to leave it plugged
@JourneymanGeek that's why I troubleshoot my laptop easily......

@avirk Yeah. You usually don't leave electronics plugged in or connected to a power source when working on them. Getting shocked is not fun.

lol
I've been shocked
hurts like a bitch

Q: How to Track Duplicate Downloads

user1089173I have a product and we are running a campaign for it to allow users to download a trial version. My questions is there any way to detect multiple downloads from the same computer but behind a proxy. For example if a person uses a proxy server, changes his/her ip and downloads our trial version...

So why they don't use any hardware ID to track a PC to install again trial version

@JourneymanGeek Typo patrol

@JourneymanGeek what hurts like bitch to you?

Q: Windows Explorer stops working and needs to be restarted after longer usage

AristaWith Windows Explorer, I often run into problems. When I have Explorer open for longer periods, it will exit. This is very frustrating and I thought about reinstalling Windows. Is there something wrong with my computer or there is a virus?

Perhaps not the same issue, but I guess the bottom line is "reinstall your OS".
And even then, why play games on highest graphics on an i3 with integrated graphics... o_O

@TomWijsman: I'd really like to talk to his school, if he's one of those kids who was told to join SU and get 50 rep as an assignment

@JourneymanGeek: If it were a school, I would say it would be a pretty weird one given that a lot of people get problems with their computers.
Who knows there is a big Super User poster hanging out in some local computer club... :D

3:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek wait what? where?

4:18 AM
@Sathya voted.

Primary votes won't count much :'(

I'll vote again in the finals.

I would too, hopefully.

@jokerdino: some guy posted it in a deleted networking question

Unfortunately, Sathya's right in the middle (9th of 18), and way behind the top 3.

4:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek right.

I don't have enough rep on SO (unsuprisingly) to vote

I didn't either. Until a couple of days ago.

I can't code. I need to fix that ;p

You know what? There are so many SU questions in SO. Just answer them :P

Jeff Atwood on July 14, 2009

That’s right, it is officially Ewok Time.

At any rate, if you wanted a community where (almost) anything goes, you’re about to get exactly what you asked for in the form of superuser.com. If your question has to do with computers, it will be allowed there.

But then again, so are Ewoks. Be careful what you ask for, I guess.

To get started, go to superuser.com and sign up with your OpenID. Here’s the password you’ll need:

ewok.adventure

Be sure to visit the accounts tab of your user page after you join, so you can get the +100 account association bonus on Super User! (Note tha …

Q: How to delete autorun.inf file from USB. It says "Access denied"

> i am using USB drive to connect to internet
What the heck is that supposed to mean?!

@Bob Sometimes virus is detected when autorun is being executed on flash drives. I had this happening on Windows XP. You can Google solution. I think it is somekind of USB modem having internal storage as well to connect to the internet.

Bob
@Boris_yo No, not that. The part about using a "USB drive to connect to internet".

@Bob He/She meant USB modem (with internal storage?)?

Bob
@Boris_yo They make things like that? :\

6:29 AM
@Bob Well I just made... Royalties anyone? I want 5% if idea succeeds and gets widespread.

@Sathya That broke 15 links.
I guess it won't hurt to relink them to superuser.com/questions/100360/…

@jou get journeymangeek.xxx :P

Bob
What's the difference in price, anyway?

7:36 AM
i think i might buy .in later on
@JourneymanGeek yep. totally.

lol
.xxx is ~70usd
regular domains are about 10
is pondering starting a geeky blog thing
need to select a platform to run it on and crap tho

get ubuntu wordpress

actually, i'd prefer a text based backend >_>
running it on a VPS, then i wouldn't need to run a db
though, i am already running one...
I donno, i'll work out something
@jokerdino: I prefer to install stuff myself the old fashioned way for some wierd reason
I might also end up just hosting it elsewhere

your choice. ;)

ya ;p
I just wanted to sit on the domain name while i plan for a slightly more 'professional' web presence ;p
(and then become's singapore's most awesome tech news site! DL can eat my shorts!)

Bob
@Sathya Why does double click force quit?

it's a Windows thing

Bob
Huh.

7:59 AM
clicking on the upper-left click brings up the rightcliick menu, double click causes the default action to perform
open any windows app, click on the extreme upper left corner see what happens

... I didn't know that ;p

Bob
o.O
@Sathya Except Firefox, with it just opens its menu :P

Hello there....
@OliverSalzburg hello.
What's up?

hey

hey @HaydnWVN

Cheers guys :)

Cheers :)
I just voted up @Sathya
Did you @OliverSalzburg

9:18 AM
@avirk Of course

Yeah!
SO howz day today

Bob
Who here (eligible to vote) didn't? :P

@Bob lol
Hey guys I haven't any idea about how to use AHK script so can anyone tell me?

@avirk load it in AHK & done.

@Sathya thanks!
I'm just newbie for AHK
so going to do some practice with it.....:p

9:23 AM
pretty nifty

Who is using FF13?
I think they are going to beat chrome soon. What do you think geeks?
@Sathya let's see....:P

Chrome > anything.

But FF 13 has good rich feature....
or not?
however I miss about:config in chrome....:(
my favorite from last 3 years.

@avirk chrome://chrome-urls/

@Sathya thanks!
IDK know about that.:)

9:32 AM
FF is getting so bloated. And Chrome has V8.

@avirk Frustrating. I recently changed banks and now have a new bank account. The number starts with a 0 and a lot of system don't seem to be able to handle that and cut of the leading 0.
Resulting in companies not getting their money.

@OliverSalzburg that's strange.

"We want your money" - "Get it from my bank account!" - "It's not valid!" - "It is! I send you the new number ages ago!" - "Our system says it starts with a 9" - "NO"

Then you should consider it with bank I think.

And, like, in the service center of this one bank. I gave her the number, and she wrote down a 00 instead of 0. I corrected her 3 times, she didn't get it.
4 weeks later I get the notice they can't draw from my account. What a surprise!
So I call them. "You have a double-0 in front of the number. It's only one 0"

9:37 AM
She I think she has tow 00

And she tells me the system doesn't accept leading zeros!!!
How would that even be possible?
It obviously does

How could it possible
my all bank accounts however they are saving accounts starts with 0
If system does not accept the leading zeros then why they open account with a zero?

Bob
@avirk FF12-13 has massive memory leak issues for me.

That really a head-ache

Bob
And crashes fairly often on my desktop for some reason.
But I still use it :P

9:44 AM
@Bob Yeah FF12 was much memory leaking version as I think

@WilliamHilsum here?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Wait, what?

@HaydnWVN possibly!

just updated it yesterday and check it now

Bob
How long is a typical bank account number?

9:44 AM

@Bob It varies in Germany.

@its depend it could be 10-16 in India

almost half the HP RRP

@Bob

But I guess 10 digits is normal pretty sure I've seen shorter though.

9:45 AM
i'm trying to see the catch/loophole etc lol

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Mhmm.. but I'd expect them to store as a string, which would not drop leading zeroes :P
Unless it's really short, or whoever designed the system really fails.

@Bob lol

@Bob I don't care what they do. But this is actually another bank. I have a credit with them and pay it off from my other account.
Shouldn't they be able to handle, you know, bank accounts?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Who says that?

It boggles the mind :P

9:46 AM
HP SFP modules still £200 each, but with 24 port gigabit switches @ ~£150 inc VAT :O

@OliverSalzburg yeah it is
after all its about hard earned money.

Well, they gave me money in the first place, now they want it back ;) They have all right to have it. But this shouldn't be an issue. I made 4 attempts through 3 different media to try to get them to change my bank account number.
Maybe I just pay the whole credit off today and forget the whole thing ever happened :P

:p
wait O_o
you forget that its ever happened? Great man
@OliverSalzburg so what will you do now? Change the bank or will be with it continue

@avirk No, I let them wait. They send me letter which I answer by emails which they answer by letters. :D

Lol

9:55 AM
They have a service email address, but they don't answer it.
They want you to call their number. Which costs extra, of course ;)

WTH why they don't use it?
Call, Then I'm sure call will receive by a sexy girl who just want to chat geek like you......;)

Well, with the phone line, at least they make some money to pay their support staff. With email, they get nothing.
@avirk I already did, twice.

And who answered?
a girl!

Yeah, but she wasn't able to change my number. Because of the system, you know? ;)

Hahahaha see her personally may be then.........;P
