ugh
I'm almost tempted to do a mass @ about the table/computer divide people were talking about earlier ;p

@JourneymanGeek You say that word a lot. You should be named "Journey Ugh Man" :P

@iglvzx: not as much as the TLA starting and ending with L and with a O in the middle

@JourneymanGeek L... O... Wait, what's the third letter?
;)

meta.superuser.com/questions/3306/… and meta.superuser.com/questions/3266/… are probably relevant on a wider aspect of it. I think the current/upcoming breed of dead simple SBCs (the Raspberry Pi and the Via APC) may be another thing that we'd need to look at - the latter is more powerful, has better specs but runs android, and the former is runs a desktop OS. — Journeyman Geek 11 secs ago

@JourneymanGeek Good point on the second link

1:21 AM
I think the nicest solution would be a tablets & phones SE site
but i think there was a consumer electronics site that didn't work out before
@iglvzx: on the other hand, if you ran debian on the APC... it would be entirely on topic for SU i'd suspect
(wants one of both >_>)

1:41 AM
We expand the Windows Phone site to include Windows tablets. Problem solved! :P — iglvzx 19 secs ago

actually that would work too
but the WP mods would need to agree

Yeah. It's an idea. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it

no
go post!

@JourneymanGeek I wrote it as a comment. I don't have much to say about the idea. I just think it would work. lol
This is interesting. People are programming games on their SE profiles:

Anyone with AutoHotkey want to test my script? I think I have overcome a huge obstacle when remapping keys:

A: Replace [ with { and ] with } using AutoHotkey

iglvzxUsing curly brackets for raw key interpretation is only for the Send commands. So, to map [ to { and ] to } you can use: [::Send, {{} ]::Send, {}} Note: Remapping a key with its Shift equivalent is troublesome, as most if not all keyboards send the same scancode each time, the only differenc...

Bob
@iglvzx Works for me (in Notepad). Games and similar may have issues?

@Bob I don't know. I was just trying to figure out how to get key repetition to work when Shift is involved, as well as avoiding infinite loops. :)
I should probably do more testing, however, especially with letters and CapsLock.
@Bob Did it not work? (your alternative script)

Bob
3:55 AM
@iglvzx I forgot the $. This is how I would do it: pastebin.com/U05Z326X
"Physical only" shouldn't be for the shift keys (think sticky keys)
It worked without the $, it's just extra protection against getting stuck in a loop.

@Bob Mind if I attach your version of the script to my answer? (with proper credit ofcourse)

Bob
@iglvzx Go ahead :P

@iglvzx don't think so. bit of a rambling answer but nothing suspicious

@Sathya Okay. Their writing style is just very fragmented. Like they're pulling phrases from a search engine. Oh well

@Sathya Again? What happened the first time?

wut :\

@jokerdino Here's a Ubuntu question I am lost at .. wats the problem ?

my chat messages aren't going though

7:41 AM
Oh. You must've upset the SE Team

@HackToHell xubuntu.. i have no experience with that.

It's just a different DWM...

you think it is as simple as that? i am not sure

@HackToHell And different set of default applications

And API's too like KDE Wallet

7:43 AM
I prefer Xubuntu over Ubuntu. The GUI in XFCE is a lot slimmer than Unity

But XFCE looks kinda gross, I have it, KDE, Gnome, BlackBox

Xubuntu is the only thing I haven't used more than an hour.

@HackToHell The Greybird theme is good

Compared to other mainstream interface. eg. Unity. gnome-shell, KDE, LXDE

@iglvzx I have never themed it, love KDE, but it does not connect to the internet properly for me, I use Ice Cream Sandwich theme in Gnome 3

7:45 AM
i am liking KDE as well.

xubuntu feels a lot like old gnome to me. If i'm not on KDE, i use LXDE tho

Xubuntu's default theme is mostly inspired by ElementaryOS's UI: elementaryos.org/discover
I haven't tried it, but it looks like a good OS for the less tech savvy

doesn't matter what the WM, underlying server is the same

w8, I have LXDE too. I loved Gnome 2 :'(

@HackToHell anyways, if the screen is a LCD, the refresh rate shouldn't matter..

7:48 AM
I used GNOME 2 yesterday and didn't like the reduced vertical space. I was crammed

Thats what i don't like about the double bar style of working with gnome2-style DEs

I always have just one panel on the bottom

I like how window controls and title bar, app menu and indicators go into one panel in Unity.

@Sathya If I change the refresh rate in my monitor, it forces me to set it to 60 ..
@jokerdino Unity looks AWFUL !

@HackToHell I was a Unity fanboi until GNOME 3.4 was released. :)

7:51 AM
Hate them both ;p

and now, I am using KDE (4.8?) since yesterday

Love KDE too.
I love Unity. Need to see what's the big deal with Gnome.

haven't used a linux desktop since i got my x220 >_>
and its VERY likely my main desktop will be pure windows
(I run CLI linux a fair bit)

loved KDE since ~ 3.5.x

KDE is awesome, cause it's a lot like windows

7:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek my main desktop is pure Windows.

Bob
@Sathya I'm just too used to Windows, KDE is easiest for me

meaning
pure Windows ?
??

@Sathya: my old laptop is a quadboot, i run linux on an old mini ITX box ;p
@HackToHell: single OS ;p
like sensible people

@HackToHell no dualboot stuff. Run Linux from VM. No headaches of hardware incompatibility, partitioning, fs irritations etc

why exactly is that, dual booting has several advantages

Bob
7:54 AM
@Sathya And the snapshots! :D

I dualboot because I don't have infinite resources.

Like when windows goes down there's linux :)

@Bob oh yeah! can't live without them!

7:55 AM
And I have only one pc :/

@HackToHell like I have a million ones

Oh, then i can boot up a system off USB
but ya, VMs are the way to go

ah yeah, I have a Live CD to cover my back.

@HackToHell You know, I first dualbooted with RH5.2 & SuSE 6.3 back in 2000.

@Sathya you have 2 or 3 ! Isn't that enough

7:56 AM
on a 1GB hard disk

Bob
Live USBs: make sure it's a quality flash drive you're using.

I got my computer in 2001

I have only my Envy

@JourneymanGeek Yep :)

@Sathya, can I request an account merge with this one asked a question last night not logged in sadface

7:57 AM
/me has two systems on his desk, one spare laptop with a dead battery, a mini itx box....

@Sathya A single laptop ?? !!, your profile page shows a chrome book and iirc, you have a dual monitor pc

@HackToHell ChromeBook is with my sis back home.

never got one tho ;p

i would have reverse duped it.

@HackToHell it's a 2010 Envy

@tombull89 Wow, that's some collection you have

you forgot afternoon, @Bob. It's afternoon here :P

9:32 AM
Thats fun, i've got my old server migrated to a livedvd-ish image, and no obvious path to migrate off that

Bob
Is it normal for the DVD drive to repeatedly spin up, wait half a sec, spin down, wait half a sec, etc., when trying to create a "Live File System" DVD on Windows?
It's been a while since I've done this, but it sure doesn't sound normal.
Oh wait, "unable to format". That's nice.
And it's still trying to spin up. Can't eject. Time to restart!

9:55 AM
Just in case you guys are ever wondering ;P

A: Should my WSUS provide update information before it is fully synchronized?

Oliver SalzburgSo, after waiting a couple of hours days, the first updates are being served. I guess what my confusion boiled down to was: Can WSUS offer updates to clients before they are downloaded to the server? Which, in hindsight, is a pretty stupid question. In case you're someone waiting desperately...

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Did you... download... 160GB... in a day?!
I literally wouldn't be able to achieve that downloading Linux torrents (i.e. max speed) for 24 hours :\

@Bob I cannot do that much in a month :D :D

@Bob Yes. That was a lucky day yesterday. I did not expect it to finish that soon after the performance of the previous days.

1 hour later…
Bob
11:15 AM
This isn't good. My DVD drive has disappeared on my laptop :\
In fact, the whole DVD/CD-ROM Drive category is missing from the Device Manager. How the heck did that happen?

@Bob Maybe it was ejected

Bob
@OliverSalzburg The drive was ejected?!

@Bob On some laptops, they're replaceable and actually hot-swappable.
At least I think I remember that from one of my Thinkpads.
The whole drive could be replaced with a floppy :D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Not this cheap HP laptop xD

I dunno. Maybe it's just broken :P

Bob
11:22 AM
@OliverSalzburg Huh.. the easy access panel on the bottom has a symbol of a chip (RAM?), radio (WiFi?) and stack of discs (optical drive?). Maybe it is hot-swappable. Wow.
Well, a restart brought it back

@Bob Well, if it was ejected (through the process I was thinking of), it should be re-attached after a reboot.
Unless it is actually mechanically ejected, which I doubt :D
@Bob Ah, great :)

Bob
I've got a funny pack of DVD+Rs here. It breaks drive firmware :|
Continuous bursts of spin until power down :|

12:14 PM
@Bob: stack of disks is probably the hard drive
and ya, on HPs there is often a way to access the mini pci/mini pci-e connector through the bottom

12:27 PM
Fuck! I really hate losing my Chrome session.
I reboot, PhraseExpress wants to download an update, opens my browser, and, thus, overwrites my previous session somehow.
wtf

12:43 PM
So much for "never lose anything" :P

1:35 PM
OK, somehow the Office (De)Installation process fucks with your Google Chrome profile.
Whenever I install/uninstall Office, my saved Chrome session is lost afterwards.

Bob
1:45 PM
Firefox + Tabs Mix Plus gives me two layers of session restore :P
In the rare cases TMP loses its session, FF has its own saved session :D

@Bob Yeah, I installed some Session Manager now. At least now I can quicksave :P

Bob
2:05 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yea, now that I think about it, it probably is the hard drive: i.imgur.com/DHG98.jpg
Android is almost useless when trying to hide something in a photo (you don't need my product key :P)

2:29 PM
Humm
I'm starting to think that losing my session was by design.
When I close/open Chrome, everything is restored fine.
If I reboot in between, the session is lost.
Logoff/Logon is sufficient to replicate
Chrome will open with 1 tab (www.google.com)
When I open a new tab, I get this option:
I guess our definitions of "where I left off" differ :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Crash recovery?

@Bob What do you mean?

Bob
Save on crash/forced close
As opposed to save on clean exit

I'm cleanly exiting
I even exited, then rebooted
After reboot, the session is not restored

Bob
o.O

2:37 PM
Or after Logoff/logon
It's like the logoff deletes the stored session
I blame one of the Chrome background tasks for this.

Bob
Hm.. what gets cleared on logoff...

It would help if I knew where the open tabs are actually stored.

Bob
Either a hidden process or temporary file? No, Windows temporary folders aren't cleared on logoff (normally)
Hidden process? :P

@Bob For the desktop notifications and Google Cloud print and stuff like that, I have many Chrome processes running at all times (even when the browser itself is not open).
So I wouldn't be surprised if those play a role in this.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Well, one way to test: taskkill /IM *chrome* /T
Hopefully, you don't have other processes with chrome in their name...

2:41 PM
@Bob Let's try!
ERROR: The process "chrome" not found.

Bob
Huh

/FI seems to allow wildcards
C:\Windows\system32>taskkill /FI *chrome* /T
ERROR: The search filter cannot be recognized.

Bob
/FI imagename *chrome*
/IM seems to only allow * at the end

"imagename eq chrome"
C:\Windows\system32>taskkill /T /F /FI "IMAGENAME eq chrome*"
That's most likely it :D
BRB
Works great
Restored my session

Bob
Well, crash recovery works at least
What's logoff doing differently?

2:49 PM
As I said, my next step would be to determine the storage location of the saved tabs, then try to log every write access to it.

Bob
I'm wondering if it's worth installing Chrome :|
Firefox is working great for me, except with Flash

I wonder if this data is even stored on disk or in the cloud :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg That's a scary thought. Your browsing habits... ... I need to go read their privacy policy again

@Bob I was worried to switch to Chrome (from Firefox) because of the importance I placed in my extensions. Even though I was sure that Chrome was more stable and efficient than Firefox. In hindsight, that was a mistake and I don't regret the switch.
@Bob There's a lot of synchronizing going on between my desktop Chrome and Android Chrome.
While scary, it is convenient :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I'm using Opera Mobile, Fireffox Mobile has unusual bugs on my phone. Haven't tried Chrome there yet

2:51 PM
Convenience, the arch rival of security...
I really love the latest revision of Android Chrome. Especially since I get added benefit from using Chrome on the desktop as well (the mentioned synchronizations).

Bob
I'm actually rather wary of synchronisations, I'm not sure if one might overwrite another. And I doubt the approx 60 tabs I have open will translate well to a phone :P

@Bob I don't know if it really works that way. I only use the other way around. So I can continue reading what I discovered while on the toilet :D
You open a new tab and say, "Hey, open that tab I was just reading on my phone", and it does
For the other way, I use Chrome to Phone, which works equally perfect

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I've recently started using Pocket for that. It's about as cross-platform as you can get

@Bob I've yet only read about it
The thing with that is, it's a 2-step process. Pocket -> Un-Pocket
With Chrome to Phone (or the other way), you simply push the URL to the other device and it works instantly.
The difference is minor, but sometimes that matters in your workflow.

Bob
On the other hand, I can store a whole lot more there to, well, read later.
I'm well over 200 links already (yes, I do that a lot)
