3:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hah cool :P

and i have no way to get it off that for now

hiked 9 miles today with a 30 LB pack.... bah, I'm tired.

i'll likely try a simple image of the drive, restore to VM and resize it before i restore it to a smaller drive
stupid lack of linux knowledge, there's prolly a simpler way

@JourneymanGeek lol if you think you have no knowledge of Linux, think again

@studiohack: not as much as i'd like ;p

3:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't know as much as I'd like in about 1,000 areas :P

@studiohack: one never stops learning. And spending too much effort trying to do less ;p

very true

in this case, the smart thing would be to leave as is, wipe the system, and run the livedisk concurrently with the running system
actually...
I have some DVD DLs around here somewhere

@OliverSalzburg nice.
morning

4:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek Spend 24 hours to develop a solution that saves 10 seconds each time. After 8640 instances, it pays off! :P

5:10 AM
lol
@iglvzx: right now i'm trying to image a hard drive in situ in...
FFFF
I could just pop out the drive, do what i need to on the other desktop, and do the imaging on it itself
which would be simpler
AUGH

2 hours later…
7:12 AM
What can I do to get rid of the question ban?
As soon as possible...
:o)
I shoudl answer at least 5 questions?

7:28 AM
@user1111261: I believe that you need to edit your older ones so that they are no longer of bad quality.

ok
and then i will have to wait for how long to be able to ask questions again?

@user1111261 there is no wait period, if previous question quality is good, it should be lifted immediately. Try answering some questions too

hmm
looks like two of my old ide drives don't detect
guess i'll have to add them to the magnetic salvage pile ;)

ok, so i voted to delete my question... it says it will be able to delete the question in 4 hours
so when will it be deleted?
and once it's deleted, the ban is lifted?
:o)
@user1111261 have a look at this list from Meta Super User. — Breakthrough yesterday
what do you mean?
, Breakthrough
i just now know that i should not post questions about HW,SW or book recommendations on any of StackExchange websites
now i need to get rid of the question ban that is on my account
so that i can ask again about other issues
another thing: Does the ban mean I cannot post questions at any of StackExchange websites?
And, i can help myself by answering questions at any website?
or they have to be questions on the website where i was banned?

Bob
7:47 AM
@user1111261 Have you read this yet?
98
Q: What can I do when getting "Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions/answers from this account"? (the answer is here, in this post)

ArjanIMPORTANT: CLICK HERE AND READ CAREFULLY! While trying to ask a question, one could get: Oops! Your question couldn't be submitted because: Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account. See http://goo.gl/C1Kwu to learn more. Likewise, for answers: Oops! Yo...

@user1111261 deletion doesn't lift the ban.
@user1111261 no.
@user1111261 where you're banned.

I asked a question on SuperUser
about book recommendation
for learning Excel

Bob
@user1111261 While not related to the question ban, I would recommend you look over your old questions and accept the answer(s) if they answer your question.

so i should have known that i should never ask for book recommendation on any of StackExchange websites

Bob
It's just a nice thing to do.

7:54 AM
k
ok
didn't know about it yet
is there any PDF or website where i can read the basics of how StackExchange work?

Bob
@user1111261 The FAQ is a good place to start.

@user1111261 the faq makes it pretty clear & right on top.

i have been using it for almost 1 year but didn't know

Bob
Click on the section titles to expand them (in the FAQ).

about anything concerning banning users , asking good questions etc
ok

7:56 AM
if you read more there's Meta SU FAQ & Meta SE FAQ

what is Meta?
and these are just the rules for SuperUser?
on StackOverflow they have different rules?

First is Super User specific, the other is rules/guidelines for throughout the network

and the ban that i have now, it is valid for SuperUser only?
I can ask at other StackExchange websites?
even though i am banned here?

you can ask on other SE sites provided the question is on-topic for that site.

ok
the question that made my account to be banned is now deleted
can i answer the questions or not?

8:01 AM
13 mins ago, by Sathya
@user1111261 deletion doesn't lift the ban.

i know

+ it's not one question that causes a ban

and where can i see all my deleted questions?
now i only see the questions that were not deleted
there is 7 of them

you can't, that's by design.

whatever
status quo is that in the pas i have asked questions that i should not have asked
i cannot see them anymore
what can i do to lift my ban

8:05 AM
I've repeatedly mentioned what you've to do. If you can't pay attention there's nothing I can do.

i should answer some questions but i cannot do that since i have a ban

you're prohibited from asking questions is what you've told me.

yes

question != answers.

i've seen the message: Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account. See goo.gl/C1Kwu to learn more.
but on that website they told me to go it says:
A ban is enforced automatically, and only prevents posting questions or answers. It is invisible to others.
so I cannot answer the questions

> If you are banned from asking questions [... ] then writing a few quality answers that get upvoted
@Bob there are 3 deleted questions within the 30-day window.

Bob
@Sathya Still, wouldn't it be more correct to say self-deletion doesn't instantly lift the ban?

@Bob yes, that would be more appropriate.

Bob
I was more asking because I was unsure though; I've never encountered this myself.

i'm completely confused now
can i answer the questions of other and after that get my ban lifted?
and this is the only way i can get my ban lifted?

8:14 AM
@user1111261 yes. & yes.

thank you very much

you're welcome.

Bob
8:39 AM
Huh, SE actually has a captcha for registered users? Nice.

9:26 AM
@Bob yes, i think mods get the most captcha.

10:02 AM
I guess [this](http://superuser.com/questions/428591/set-default-terminal-in-ubuntu-12-04) question can be answered following this one - http://askubuntu.com/questions/70540/how-can-i-set-default-terminal-used

How do you like me to proceed? Post the same answer with a link back??

as always,self contained answer + link back

fair enough. proceeding likewise.

10:15 AM
@iglvzx I brought it back :D meta.superuser.com/questions/855/…

OK done - pointed to the AU answer as well. superuser.com/a/428723/104400

@OliverSalzburg @iglvzx you two really like that icon ;p

@OliverSalzburg actually not a bad idea to mark it with that icon.

@Sathya I don't know why, but small icons make the content appear somewhat more interesting. Yeah, I really do like it :)
But maybe I'm misguided ;)

10:56 AM
we have our first raspi question >_>

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm pretty sure I saw another one a few weeks ago

ahh
i'm not sure where they belong, and this is one of those not easily answerable questions

Bob
@JourneymanGeek In fact, the tag has 8 questions...
Well, they'll best belong on the Raspberry Pi SE once it's up :P
Otherwise, they're essentially computers? With maybe some EE thrown in.

my bad
never noticed them ;p

11:04 AM
But I still had that question open in another tab though ;D
Still waiting for my raspi :(

Bob
@OliverSalzburg lol

lol
@OliverSalzburg: I want one, but it'll probably wait till general availability, and my new gaming box being complete

I preordered as soon as I got the mail :P

I'm not even sure I could turn it on or get any I/O going without any additional equipment
But I had to support the project

11:15 AM
@OliverSalzburg: I'm also a little torn between that and the via APU

A cheap, multi-purpose computing device... Awesome

eh. all you need is a sd card and cellphone charger

@JourneymanGeek Good to know :)
Display connects via HDMI?

HDMI or composite

I hardly know anything about the specifics :P

11:17 AM
composite is super common, every old TV has it

Yeah
I just have no free connectors...
I have dual screens and a 4-way DVI switch on my desk, yet no free inputs :P

But luckily I'll soon get rid of at least one machine...

connect it to your TV

@JourneymanGeek It's in another room and the same story :D

11:19 AM
lol

There are like 5 devices connected
3xHDMI 1xComposite 1xScart
And it has pixel errors :P

i haven't seen scart in a while

A whole broken column of pixels :(

lol
sure it isn't a loose connector?

Yeah, when I bought that TV (4 years ago), I had nothing connected via HDMI, all scart. Now...

11:21 AM
then again, i'm a self taught monitor butcher ;)

@JourneymanGeek It's on all inputs, so, yeah, pretty sure.

(i fix it, then another cap fails)
I mean internally

Ah
Possible, I guess
I fear to break more than I fix when working with electronics.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wonder if it would be possible to hack video out via USB? Hmm..

11:23 AM
Like, I'm sure if I would try to fix that broken column, afterwards I'd have no working columns :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg If you're really lucky, you might have that one column working! :D

Would love to fix it though, given that it's only 4years old and cost a ton of money.
@Bob lol :D

@Bob: I'm hoping they have a low cost SPI screen to it

Bob
@JourneymanGeek SPI? That can do video now?
Wait, I'm thinking of the wrong SPI.

11:38 AM
lol, ya, i was looking it up and getting confused about it
apparently its a video interface called that

11:48 AM
@GeorgeEdison: Did you get to resolve your wireless issue?
I've been experiencing the same since some days ago and can remember having experienced the same back in Windows 7.
It might be related to having enabled my Windows Firewall and strictly configuring it, maybe...
(aka, deny any in/out traffic and open up things as I need them)

1 hour later…
1:12 PM
That was quite educational

2 hours later…
2:49 PM
@OliverSalzburg: He types slower than anyone I know, geezz... :D

@TomWijsman Heheh, yeah, that was painful to watch :D
I find it shocking that this scam seems to be profitable.

@OliverSalzburg Gah, that was bad. Good idea with the VM tho...

@RossDoughty Indeed. I don't think I would have the clarity to pull that off in such a situation.

@OliverSalzburg No neither, grand idea though. I shall have to give that a go next time someone tries something like that.

I'm just happy to know that things like this take place :P

3:03 PM
Yeah for sure, it's good :)

Now I can prepare relatives and friends :P

haha yeah :P

Bob
3:14 PM
@OliverSalzburg Heh, love the timeskip. I can't believe someone could fail to use IE6, as simple as it is. None of those newfangled 'tabs' to deal with! :P

@Bob I guess it just shows that competent people usually get honest jobs :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Too bad we don't get those calls here.. it would be fun to see them deal with a Linux VM :P

@Bob Argh, now I have to check that Administrator account thing in a VM ;D

Bob
3:30 PM
That says the default is disabled, i.e. UAC off...

@Bob So that means you need to enable the Administrator account and disable UAC?

@Bob: with a windows xp theme

Bob
Default has UAC off for the Administrator account

Well, I need a fresh Win7 VM anyway
Several people at my last workplace enjoyed working with the Administrator account permanently.

Bob
There seems to be two UAC settings, a system-wide on/off and a built-in "Administrator" account on/off. The system-wide defaults to on and the Administrator defaults to off.

3:33 PM
I just remember that they didn't have many of the problems I had.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg My mum's company supplied laptop has her using the Administrator account :\
I finally set her up with her own UAC on account after she managed to break it somehow :P

I really don't know how I feel about UAC for normal people.
My girlfriend has an interesting way of dealing with it.
She just ignores it.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I tend to do that :P

I come to her desk, look at her screen, 2-3 icons in the taskbar, pulsing constantly

Bob
I only pay attention when I don't expect it.
Oh, ignore as in not click either option?
There's a timeout of two minutes, wasn't there?

3:35 PM
@Bob Yes
@Bob Not in those cases anyway :D
I guess it depends on how the application was started.
Like, I installed Everything on her machine
And it asks for elevation once it is started with Windows.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Ah well, we all know the timeout only applies when it's an installer called by a parent installer, which then fails because the user went for a walk :P

Bob
> which is beter ?VI or Nano.
Now there's a question that
> will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion

3:54 PM
Sweet

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ?

@Bob A Github client for Windows

Bob
@OliverSalzburg lol

It's pretty awesome.

Bob
I've used Git for small local things in Visual Studio, but that's all through a Source Control Provider

3:57 PM
I'd prefer that Metro look over TortoiseGit any day :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Heh, I'm still using TortoiseSVN for things not done through VS
Git confuses me

@Bob I've made several attempts to get into git previously. With this project I wanna go with it 100% to finally learn to git :P
I've read a lot in the git book and the concept sounds excellent. But the tools are confusing to me and seem overly complex.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg The extent of my knowledge of what to do with Git is: commit when something is done and you won't lose your code... hopefully.

Maybe this Github client is more suited for my simple mind :P

Bob
I've used SVN a bit more

3:59 PM
@Bob All my current projects reside in SVN

Bob
@OliverSalzburg :)

Awesome! :D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Wait, are you using Windows 8? Or is that a Metro theme in 7 (or Vista)?

@Bob The latter.
The application is just Metro styled.
I love it so far.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I'm going to have to give it a try when I have some time to sort out Github
It's probably time to migrate all my little snippets there before my HDD crashes or something :P

4:03 PM
Sweet, already done :D github.com/oliversalzburg/downloads
I think I'm sold on this client, that's for sure :P

This calls for an EPIC fail youtube.com/watch?v=jb69H7l0vJA

@OliverSalzburg: It's missing quite some features though, so I'm preferring console till that point...

@TomWijsman I'll stick with it until I miss those features. :)

If you're using Git as intended, that's not going to be long, I guesss... :D
But yeah, the UI is handy for the standard actions.

@TomWijsman I'm just happy I found an approach that gets me started right away. I was struggling with the git bash approach to be honest.

4:16 PM
@OliverSalzburg the initial github/ remote git setup workflow is quite painful on Windows

@Sathya: Why would it be painful?

@Sathya Let's see where this takes me. Honestly, I can't wait to really get going with this and discover all the stuff I have been missing out on :D

@TomWijsman try setting up ssh keys without knowing what the heck they mean and how to get it done

I tried to set it up several times in the past but always failed because I had no real incentive.

4:20 PM
@OliverSalzburg github for windows creates a key behind the scenes

@Sathya Ah, yeah, they just sent me a mail :D

@OliverSalzburg yep, that's how I realized it too

4:37 PM
But that client is a smart move by github. From what I can tell, Windows developers don't take to the whole concept. Which isn't surprising to me as git is very UNIX-y
This makes it incredibly easy to use
Easier than using (Tortoise)SVN even

@Sathya The guide explains that very well.

5:24 PM
@OliverSalzburg: Don't mind my Trishula repo. I probably am not going to write much code to it these days (school, etc...), kind of like how I approach the SU blog :D

5:43 PM
@TomWijsman I see you've become quite active on the meteor front :)

1 hour later…
7:08 PM
@JourneymanGeek This should answer your question about what it provides:

@sidran32 What's that?

I used it in my build. It was a lifesaver. It deserves its awesome reviews. :)
I got it from TigerDirect, which apparently is out of stock of the thing, now. Good to see Amazon carries it though. :P But I shouldn't be surprised. Amazon has everything
Only oddity is that it uses adhesive to velcro to a blank surface on the case. But it fits nicely up behind my drives in the drive bay.

7:46 PM
Sweet

2 hours later…
9:17 PM
@TomWijsman What shell do you use for git?

@OliverSalzburg: Git Bash

I just opened the git in PowerShell thing and don't know how I feel about it yet :D
It feels so good to type ls and not be greeted with unknown command

9:44 PM
@TomWijsman Wow. I just realized you wrote this blog post :D blog.superuser.com/2011/05/10/…
I went through that step-by-step when I got my first SSD
A+++ Would read again!

@OliverSalzburg haha :P @TomWijsman has written some really good stuff

@studiohack Indeed

@sidran32: i'm probably getting one. As i said tho, a USB 3.0 version of that would be appriciated a little more due to the design of my case ;p

10:13 PM
@OliverSalzburg Haha. Looks good. :)

10:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek I'm sure something like that will surface. USB3.0 is still new though. My headers were already only 2.0 so it wasn't something I had to worry about. My only 3.0 ports are on the back panel.

@sidran32: AMD didn't have USB 3.0 at that point of time?
er, i misread
@sidran32: the board i'm looking has headers for it and a little thing that either acts as a bracket or sits in a HDD bay/floppy bay - putting it in the former would be messy, since i'd have a cable coming out the back connecting to it, putting it in the latter means one less USB port ;p

11:10 PM
The Breakdown of a Fake AV Scammer:
I wasn't aware that people actually make phone calls and guide clueless users into destroying their computers!

8 hours ago, by Oliver Salzburg
I find it shocking that this scam seems to be profitable.
I watched it this morning and was quite surprised as well.

Ah. I see I have reposted :P

@iglvzx I don't read all of the chat either ;)

You have to wonder how all these scam companies continue to thrive. In the USA, I occasionally get phone calls from scammers pretending to be other businesses, especially banks. It's always "Your funds have been put on hold. Please call us back with your information, so we can verify your identity and reactivate your account." Riiiigggghhhhhtttt....
@OliverSalzburg I love how the scammer is clueless about the VM services. XD

11:55 PM
Oh boy
I thought I'd do this user a favor and just contact the Asus support for him
2
Q: Can the Asus Zenbook UX21 & UX31 be safely used with their lids closed?

oKtosiTeFrom all the images of the Zenbooks that I've seen, it would appear closing the lid would obstruct airflow, potentially overheating the machines. Is this the case? Can they be used with closed lids to allow external monitor use?

My question to the support tech was: "Can the Asus Zenbook UX21 & UX31 be safely used with their lids closed?"
The answer was: "Yes the Zenbook has the ability to be on standby for up to two weeks with the instant on option."
Now I know why he came to superuser.com with the question :P
