Gah, too many ginormous pictures: superuser.com/questions/427677/…

1:05 AM
@iglvzx Is there a way to get SE to reduce the size of the image it imports?

@Paul Imgur has the APIs for it. I have no idea why SE doesn't utilize it.
PNGs shouldn't be resized, but JPGs should. If someone posts a large JPG screenshot, that's their fault. :P
Ah. It looks like images are automatically compressed to 1MB or 2MB automatically, according to the Imgur FAQ

@iglvzx The "import from web" is a useful feature that would be redundant if we had to download and resize images. It would be great if the import box had a "max width" field.

@Paul Oh. That is a better idea. I forgot you can just link directly to a remote image
Oh wait. That uses Imgur too

Yeah the import from web takes the image from the source, and uploads/resizes to imgur. If we could influence the resize it would be better.
Or even if markdown would support setting image dimensions so you could scale it down (with click for full size)

Bob
1:21 AM
@Paul Wasn't there something to reduce the displayed size?
Like appending s or m to the end of the image name?

@Bob I don't know - have you see this before?

Q: Resizing an image in a post?

warrenIs it possible to resize an image in an answer? For example, How important is PhD research topic to getting a job? has an answer that should have the image in the answer, but it's too big. Is there a way to handle resizing?

There's even one directly addressing resizing on upload

@Bob Ah cool. Stick an 'm' on the end. Done

How will I know what php version is the cPanel is running?

@winona The Stats box, usually on the left
Click "expand" is you only see a couple of details

related to my question above: here is my problem
0
Q: Wp e-commerce not compatible with cPanel or php version

winonaI just installed the plugin wp e-commerce in my website and I got this error: The website encountered an error while retrieving http://mywebsite.com/wp-admin/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly. So I did some research, and found out that this is cause by the version of...

@winona Isn't that a WordPress plugin? Did you install wordpress first?

yes, I installed the wordpress first then after installing the wp e-commerce plugin. I got this error.

@winona How did you install the plugin? Did you sign into your WordPress and use the dashboard?

2:08 AM
yes, thru the dashboard.

And now you can't get back into the dashboard?

yes..

Ok. You'll probably have to manually edit some files in your WordPress folder to remove the plugin. I'm not sure how to do that.

Then I tried to remove the plugin folder then I can see my dashboard again. So clearly the problem is the wp e-commerce plugin.
I also tried installing the plugin in a different cPanel (diff hosting provider) and works perfectly fine. So, maybe there is a compatibility issue with the cPanel or php version?

@winona cPanel is just a configuration/management front end. Try comparing PHP versions between the two

2:15 AM
I will try that.
They differ on the php version.
How can I change the version from PHP version:5.2.17 to 5.3.10 ?

@winona There's your problem! WordPress requires PHP version 5.2.4 or greater :)

Yikes. So how can I changed that?

@winona You'll have to ask your host. I don't know if you would have the privileges to manually upgrade PHP, especially if you are on virtual/shared hosting
Oh boy. It looks like my PHP is outdated too.
lol

2:45 AM
eheh.
Thats one reason i don't use a shared host

@JourneymanGeek I was looking at my host's prices for VPS, and I found a bug. I secretly hope it's just a good deal:

lol
i pay something like 3-4 dollars a month ;p

@JourneymanGeek for VPS?

Where?

2:50 AM
They don't have stock most of the time, sadly, so you need to be on their mailing list/rss feed. Also get an account way before the stock comes out

Ok. I'll look into that. Thanks

now that i'm losing my business grade internet, i'll be hosting most of my stuff on one of the 256 mb setups
I've been with them a year, there were some initial issues, but they've been reliable so far
unlike my last vps provider
who vanished off the face of the earth ;p
lucky i was paying hosting monthly with him

3:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek VPS can host stuff right ?
15$ per year is awesome !
@JourneymanGeek Can you please ping me if you find out that they have stock ?

@HackToHell: best thing is to get on their mailing list
and get an account early, else its hell - since it takes a while to activate, especially if you want to 15 dollar a year package
and it happens like twice a year and tends to be utterly nuts

3:24 AM
Registered, entered thier mailing lists, fingers crossed now ;p

XD
it'll take a while. I think they've had one sale since i got my hosting a year ago
unrelatedly, anyone else noticed the new via arm/android systems?

3:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, just read about the,

4:09 AM
looks interesting, and likely easier to hack than a raspi

Xitcod13Im trying to update mac from 10.5.8 version to 10.6.0 in order to install my CS6 photoshop but my mac doesnt want to find the update when i click check for updates. 6:29 AM
Hi all, am in a situation where i need to upgrade python2.4 to 2.7, then upgrade apache and mod_wsgi too to be compatible in this new environment. Problem is, the client doesn't have a Lincese for RHEL5, and they are unwilling to change to CentOS.
Worse of all, the client is remote, and the people in charge (on his end) can only work with rpms (they can't grok installing from source). Now, the question is, can I make yum on RHEL5 point to CentOS repos, and then use it to upgrade the above, or can I build rpms on CentOS, and then give em to these dudes to upgrade their RHEL5?

6:43 AM
@mcnemesis Your main problem is that RHEL/Centos rely on specific python versions for many system activities. So you have to install 2.7 alongside the system python otherwise you'll break things.

@Paul, i realize the dependency issue true, but would I be able to then use a python mod_wsgi application alongside apache with this sort of environment?

Yeah you can do it, you just need to be careful. There are a few tutorials around saying how to go about it safely.

My biggest issue is that all this has to doable in a simple way -- with only rpms if possible.

7:03 AM
@mcnemesis It is probably worth asking this as a question on SF (if it hasn't already been answered there). What you want to do is fairly common, but constructing an rpm that won't blitz your existing python would need care

@Paul thanks. Let me try that too

This article shows the building of rpms (for a different version host but the principle should be the same): blog.milford.io/2012/01/…

Does anyone know anything about the legality of XP CD image downloads? Specifically, this site: forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/… (seems to be the same place that provides links to legal Vista/7 images)

@Bob It's legal as long as you have a original key

Bob
@HackToHell I was going to suggest it here.

7:08 AM
The key's resent there are non-genuine and windows will nag you to buy a key

Bob
He needs the CD to run SFC.. nothing to do with installing Windows.

@Bob It works, i downloaded 7 image from digital river

What? That question wasn't for W7 in the end?

Yes, but it must work with XP too

Bob
@Paul Apparently not

7:10 AM
The place of download of ISO do not matter unless it is untouched

Bob
@HackToHell I didn't notice they provided keys. It's looking dodgier by the second. And XP was before most people had enough bandwidth to download CD images comfortably, and this is not a MS source. At least, it doesn't look like one.

@Bob I torrented my XP ISO, after I broke the CD. I replaced the pirated key with my own, so no probs

Bob
And this is why we make backup CDs. Or images, either way.

++
then again, i'm lucky enough to have copies of most of the OSes i use lying around somewhere
hmm, anyone familiar with iscsi? I'm wondering if its possible to set it up without a FQDN

Bob
Heh. I think I accidentally threw out a perfectly good Win98SE CD

7:15 AM
I use iscsi between my server and a QNAP nas

(i'll likely ask a proper question in future. It isn't worth the effort if i need to set up a local DNS server, just to set it up)
@Paul: likely will use a debian or centos system as the target, just want to run a system temporarily without messing around drives and OSes too much
well, ya, do you need a FQDN, or could you use a fake one?
and ugh, i need a dhcp server for it... this is starting to look a little more complicated

Ummm, I just IP to point at the NAS

eh, if its that simple, its worth taking a look at

7:33 AM
I think i'll ask a fuller question about it at some point, I don't understand a lot of it ;p

Q: Mac document conversion possible?

Larry BrysonMost instructions for document conversion seem to be specific to Microsoft products. Is there a way to convert documents coming from a Mac system, so that I can work with them on an Ubuntu computer?

and apparently, since I cannot VtC, I should not be flagging for VtC either.

@Sathya: the answer to the first one is really to look at thinkwiki ;p

Yeah, I think I'll stop flagging on Ask Ubuntu.

lol
missing mod powers?

Bob
@Sathya Huh.. OS X formats to Linux through Microsoft products? Sounds... painful.

7:38 AM
desperately, yes.

lol
@Bob: the problem isn't that question. Its the lack of specificness

I mean seriously if this is a "good" question I shouldn't be wasting my time cleaning up

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm not saying the that's a problem, just I wouldn't even think of going through that kind of process.

most MSO documents are vaguely openable on linux

if that was on Super User that question would've been VtC'd and blasted out of the orbit by now

7:40 AM
formatting goes awry in linux

@Sathya: true fact. One reason i joined SU was the problems i had finding good help with the Ubuntu community ;p

@JourneymanGeek also, consider the first revision when I had flagged askubuntu.com/posts/140417/revisions

I mean, i don't ask too many questions here, but i find there's a better chance of finding a decent answer

If I had suggested the edit to the state it's in, it'd be rejected

7:43 AM
askubuntu.com/questions/139107/… is a dupe of askubuntu.com/questions/55247/… but because the latter contains no answers, my flag was disputed.
I mean, come on.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek What are the chances of it being kicked over to SU?

noooo
well actually
its an interesting question

Bob
I don't think I've personally seen any AU questions migrated over (nor have I been here long, so... :|)

actually
its a VERY good question, if it were on SU, since it isn't something you'd normally be able to do

@Bob stats tell me no question has been migrated from Ask Ubuntu in the past 90 days
@JourneymanGeek yeah, I agree. ship-shape it a bit and it's a fine fit for Ask Ubuntu

7:46 AM
wait
they have no option to flag to move to SU
WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Huh.. what do they have?

nothing. Only meta

Bob
Wow.

flagged and commented
I'm thinking it either uses the ssd for caching, or there's some driver for it

@JourneymanGeek My boss tried it on his laptop (don't know the brand) and it just booted

its a bit like the blue key on thinkpads, it might boot it into a diagnostics partition of some sort

It also happened to rollback my previous edit (we edited around the same time)

@Bob If the OP edits their question it'll automatically accept that edit

@slhck That's.. interesting. Thanks.

@Bob I don't know though if there's a possibility to reject it, that'd be interesting to find out.

@Bob Doesn't that also happen when approving an edit by an anonymous user?
At least I always assumed it does.

A: How to create an uncompressed AVI from a series of 1000's of PNG images using FFMPEG

Warren YoungThere are several ways to get an "uncompressed" AVI out of ffmpeg, but that's not as well defined a term as you might assume. This goes for books just like for software

why?

Jeff Atwood on November 23, 2010

Over the last 2.5 years, we’ve identified a few problematic classes of questions that tend to get asked on our sites. Many of these are documented in our standard set of close reasons: exact duplicate, off-topic, subjective and argumentative, not a real question, and too localized.

However, as we launched the great Super User experiment, a new, previously unknown class of problematic questions emerged — the shopping recommendation.

That is, on Super User we began encountering questions like: …

You gotta be kidding me
Well, people have done stupider things.
Like buying Facebook stock :D

3:42 PM
@OliverSalzburg What is so bad buying stock of Facebook?

because Facebook is not really a business?

@Boris_yo Well, nothing really. I just believe it's a bubble waiting to burst.

@OliverSalzburg You think Facebook has no future?

@Boris_yo Not one that's gonna make a 106bn investment profitable

@OliverSalzburg Sorry but i am n00b in investing field and don't know meaning of 106bn.

3:45 PM
Is this possible ?

106 billion dollars

@OliverSalzburg Who is investing 106 billions?

@Boris_yo Investors
That's how much stock facebook put out

@Boris_yo You buy shares, fb gets money AFAIK

And they opened with a share price of 38USD if I'm not mistaken
Expecting exploding prices
Now it's sitting below that
Which sucks if you put your money it it :P

3:48 PM
@OliverSalzburg Collectively as a firm of investors?

@Boris_yo Collectively. That's the sum of all shares that exist.
But they were all bought.

@OliverSalzburg Yes, but you do this long term hoping one day it shoots up.

OK, 56% are already owned by Zuckerberg himself

@OliverSalzburg I thought you said "were all bought"... So who owns the rest 44%? Saverin :D

@Boris_yo There are many way to invest into the stock market ;)
@Boris_yo Everyone who bought a share. I don't maintain a list :P

3:50 PM
@OliverSalzburg Like selling you kidney?

@Boris_yo Like buying and selling rapidly. Or investing in a company that's gonna turn a profit.
You don't just invest and hope.
That's how you lose money on the stock market :P

@OliverSalzburg That's venture capitalism.
@OliverSalzburg Thank you for sharing closely guarded secret that you charge millions for.

4:44 PM
@Boris_yo My point was, saying investments in the stock market rely on luck or hope is like saying playing poker is luck.
It isn't. And the people who think it's based on luck are the ones that lose their money in it.
It's not a lottery

5:19 PM
@OliverSalzburg Got it. So if it is not luck and hope, what is it then? Familiarity of playing field? Analytical skills?

@Boris_yo Both, but mostly the latter, in my opinion.
I think the stock market is just a tool for people to invest money into companies that, they believe, will turn a big profit in the future.
As you said, another is venture capitalism.
Knowing when and where to invest, that's what it's about.
Sadly, nobody really knows. People are just guessing. Very educated guesses at times, but still guesses.
Which makes it seem all random, I guess.
Oh well, I'm hardly an expert on this. It's just my view of it :)

@OliverSalzburg Should have you invested in Google in its infancy, you would rip a lot of dough...

@Boris_yo Yeah, but I was broke anyway at that time :D
I would not have been able to afford a single share :D
