I read that as silversex

Hovering over the icons may do the trick

Hmm. There is a strange echo in this room

@DavidPostill This room being RA, or physically?

@TOWMN but of course

Oh right yeah
Even when I knew what you were referring to I couldn't quite see that
Back to school to learn to read I guess :P

Ah I was just about to buy Mass Effect and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Then realised I already have like 5 open-world games in my to-play list I'm not even close to finishing
Looks like I have a habit of buying a lot of open world games and not playing them...
... though linear games like COD I finish pretty quickly

@TOWMN speaking of which, I had a friend strongly recommend me the new Zelda game
That I don't have a Switch seemed to be beside the point
He reckoned it was an open-world game done very well
Just in case you need a 6th to not finish :P

11:11 AM
Oh
lol
I don't have a switch either

Well he had good things to say about the Switch too... ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek tried that, it crashed hexchat :P

@Bob update?
Oh, 32 or 64 bit?

Bob
11:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek 32-bit 2.12.0
yea it's old :P
I use it ... sparingly

11:57 AM
Mine seems to be older ;p
2.9.5
oops

12:24 PM
hmc just answered a question without a bounty!

12:41 PM
lol
This should not be a big deal :p

Hmm Lara looks a good few years older in Rise

1:00 PM
Not gasp horror her mid-to-late-twenties now??

1:50 PM
lol

Bob
@allquixotic @JourneymanGeek I should be good to go for gaming in ... about 13-14 hours :P

@Bob I'll be waking up at 5 tommorrow T T

How do I repair window 7 with a bootable USB stick?

(mom's coming back from india. Red eye flight)
@4-K too broad

4-K
1:56 PM
the other computer won't start to the home screen and keeps on restarting. I tried numerous options to repair but they just don't work. They either say the system couldn't find anything wrong or no porblem.
So I tried to install windows 7 on windows 7 via the Upgrade option and not the Custom option but it gives an error
it says something like restart your computer normally and then choose the upgrade option.
how do I repair my copy of windows so that I don't lose vital data in the C Drive?
@JourneymanGeek

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh

@4-K I keep my systems backed up
but this really isn't something that works well for chat

4-K
so what should I do?

Back up now.
if nothing else you can reinstall
and we don't know how or what is causing the reboots

4-K
I cannot backup because the computer shows the start screen and then shows BSOD and restarts. that's all.
I cannot get past the "welcome" screen :(

2:03 PM
ah. Safe mode?
what BSOD?

4-K
tried all the options for safe mode. It loads the file but then again goes on restarting :(

what file?

4-K
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, estart your computer blah blah blah"
it doesn't talk about any file.
It just says that system detected a problem and the tips and then restarts.
wait I will show you a screenshot of the two error.

@4-K This all very complicated. You should be asking a question on the main site.
lol

Jason CAn explanation for "move to chat" is in the comments below. Finding it is left as an exercise to the reader. @DavidPostill the site forbids me to ask any questions.

2:12 PM
@4-K You are question banned? You should improve your questions.

4-K
how can I improve my questions when I cannot ask one? @DavidPostill
@JourneymanGeek The BSOD says "unmountable_boot_volume"

4-K
I will check that and get back to you. Thanks.

2:32 PM
@4-K you have no current question ban on Super User

4-K
I am trying some methods. I will ask it if it doesn't work. @Mokubai
it worked. I went to the Load Driver option and copied all my content from there to the USB.

2:49 PM
@bertieb mid to late twenties is fine. At least she looks like a proper woman and not some female version of a man child.

I'd literally seen it like a couple of hours ago, then your image made me chuckle...

Hmmm. Got tickets to watch Ghost in the Shell. Not sure if my mind if going to let me let go of the existing anime to enjoy the film.

6:02 PM
Reading a bit about the latest generation of sports cars. It's amazing how a modern I4 engine can beat the V8 engines of 20 years past...
With car makers under constant pressure to maximize fuel economy, turbochargers are becoming increasingly common in today's cars, and technology like twin-scroll turbos, once reserved for truly high-end cars, are making their way to cars that would traditionally use naturally-aspirated V6 or V8 engines.
Turbocharged inline-4 engine doing 350 ponies? You bet.
It's amazing how far technology has come.

How is that amazing? That's just progress. The mealiest of current generation chips puts a supercomputer from 20 years ago to shame.
We constantly reorganise, reoptimise and pull efficiency out of everywhere we can

You do have a point.

> The Hitachi SR2201 on the other hand obtained a peak performance of 600 gigaflops in 1996 by using 2048 processors connected via a fast three-dimensional crossbar network.

Heh.

> The Sony PlayStation 4 is listed as having a peak performance of 1.84 TFLOPS, at a price of $400[

6:09 PM
A modern GPU easily outperforms these devices, at least for highly-parallel workloads.

Exactly. we start with brute force and ignorance in everything. Car engines, computers, and so on.
Then we optimise, figure out how to use that energy to do more with less
In less space and more efficiency
@bwDraco That Hitachi would have been for highly parallel workloads as well - "2048 processors" - ain't going to be doing much sequential stuff.

I know, I know.

I admit though, the progress we've been making is amazing and has for several years been accelerating at a good pace.

@DavidPostill , I noticed that, too! He has chimed in on several Windows-related questions recently. Could potentially find himself shunned by the rest of the Fett family! ;-)

We may well hit the singularity in my lifetime, but with the stupidity of humanity in general and the provincial nature of our thinking it leaves me disconcerted and worried.

6:25 PM
@Mokubai Are you referring to something specific?

Not really. Just progress.
bw was amazed at how far cars have come, which made me point out parallels in computing, then I wondered briefly about the future.

I'm thinking the singularity may very well happen in 30-50 years' time.

It could happen sooner if humans weren't so crap

Advanced AI is finally becoming a reality, VR is becoming consumer-accessible, and full-fledged computers can fit on your wrist.
The problem is, with the current state of society taking control away from individuals in favor of powerful corporations and governments, things aren't exactly looking good for the far future...

i'm fialing still to see advanced ai anywhere

6:34 PM
Good old urban dictionary:
> Fial
A misspelling of fail, where you automatically fail at life if you say or write it while intending to say fail. Also, commonly used in FAIL pictures that are of something horribly misspelled.

We're starting to see the first signs of advanced AI technology emerging. Intelligent personal assistants like Google Now, Alexa, and Cortana are seeing widespread adoption.

but they're not really that advanced
the voice recongnition is good
but that isn't AI
AI to me, is the computer making decisions

They're a sub branch of AI, more a precursor if you can call them that.

@Mokubai yeah i guess so

This.

6:36 PM
but scan for substrings, respond with data from huge data set isn't AI to me

They're taking fuzzy things and making complex computer decisions of actions to take

They 'think' no more than a fortran db doing a lookup things.
it's indeed very clever joining of various branches of technology to make something that appears to be interactive and original
but without it being original in anyway, shape or form
Now, computers re-writing computer programs to improve them. That is awesome
but even that is just at it's base iterative testing...
However I do see the point that, is also how generics works
and that's lead to us.
but..... 2.8 million years?

They're massively primitive, but the brain has to start somewhere, and recognising language and performing actions on it is pretty amazing. Especially when the technology was almost utterly impossible even 15 years ago

@Mokubai dragon speak or whatever it was let you talk, and have it turn into text
other program have existed for long time that took text, and did functions
and that was 15 years ago

Dragon NaturallySpeaking. That's just speech recognition.

6:39 PM
yes

But you had to spend ages training it, nowadays you can get more accuracy with less training

but all alexia etc is, is speak reconigntiion + large dataset of infomation to scan for + knowing what people generally ask for.

And it then does stuff with it based on what it can talk to and what it knows

@Mokubai and that's great but it isn't ai.
there's no 'decision' making

It's not that far off what your brain is doing TBH

6:40 PM
theres rules and heuristics
Now, I can agree that with time it may evolve into true 'AI'
but it isn't anywhere near even looking like it yet.

Parsing natural language is one thing. Actually understanding it and using the input to intelligently find information for the end user is a completely different matter. That's what these intelligent personal assistants are trying to do.

You have a vast wealth of data, you see something and your brain makes connections and says "mug", "empty" and "need coffee"

I'm sorry, but I don't buy in to the magic.
@bwDraco trying yes but the moment you go off the beaten path, they'll fail

It's not magic, that's the point

@bwDraco you got alexia?

6:41 PM
It's teaching a computer to make your decisions for you

or anyone else
just say 'Alexa, boil the kettle please'
let me know the outcome

I use Google Now on my phone once in a while. It's typically pretty smart, but sometimes fails to give the expected results with more complex requests.

@djsmiley2k In the current climate of Internet of (crap) Things? No thanks.

@Mokubai haha, boiling toilet water a go go

I like my pet fish
Once humans can be taken out of the software writing loop, then I'll let an IoT device into my house.

6:43 PM
they can be @Mokubai

@djsmiley2k Not for a long while. I want my software written by at least a second generation AI from the ground up. No untrustworthy code pulled from squishy meatsack repositories.

!!caat
Why's the bot dead? :-(

Thank dog the bot is dead.
@TOWMN You broke it with cat pictures.

@Mokubai I wasn't even here when it died -_-

@TOWMN That proves nothing. It had probably been contemplating the pointlessness of it's existence, being used just to post cat pictures... and then...

6:50 PM
@Mokubai Well then it's as much your fault for not making it do something other than posting cat pictures

Hey, I tried, but you'd already killed it.

John Tucker Cavil must die!

Let the man die in peace.

Do you mean John Carter? Just reading that at the moment...

Ohhhh
I watched that movie as a teenager

2006? You were a teenager? Whippersnapper.

7:07 PM
Yes?
Jealous?
Rahul's still a teenager

So, is a question on how to delete Discord messages on topic because of the desktop Doscord client or not on topic because Discord is an online platform?

> whippersnapper
ˈwɪpəsnapə/Submit
nouninformal
a young and inexperienced person considered to be presumptuous or overconfident.
"I know her better than you do, you young whippersnapper!"
wtf

@Ramhound If you're using a piece of special-purpose desktop software (i.e. not a browser), it seems on-topic
IIRC we have plenty of questions about Skype

I suppose, seems borderline, based on what I know about discord

I have low self esteem and social anxiety and you call me overconfident?!

7:31 PM
@Ramhound would it be on topic for an irc client?
how about a email client?

@djsmiley2k When the spam goes so deep you could make it into a movie called Spamception, that's far enough

@Ramhound Right Click > Deleted Message (if it's your own, or if you are a priviledged user).

@TOWMN spsammers spamming spam solutions?

I need snacks

@MichaelFrank I was asking becaus of the question not because i had it

8:07 PM
@Ramhound Ahh ok

I got black bomber.

@Ramhound If you want to kick off a bunch of close as dupe flags... It seems that user you were talking about that had the Discord question is asking questions and ripping answers straight out of old Qs

8:52 PM
@MichaelFrank Can you point me at an old answer he has ripped off?

9:10 PM
Will cat for food.

Food will cat for!

Cat will for food!

Food cat for will?

Do any of you have hands-on experience utilizing Greenshot? I have read some good things about it, but don't know anyone who actually uses it to support those positive reviews.

10:03 PM
so the tv reception in my flat is terrible
the signal keeps dropping out
any suggestions?

user226528
@Burgi I think you wrote something about your TV being stolen in the past. Did the police find it for you?

my mother stole my tv because it is better than her original one
i'm stuck with her tv

which isn't bad but its the first gen smart tv
none of the apps work anymore

@Burgi where is your tv signal coming from?

user226528
10:06 PM
@Burgi Ah, yes, I remember now. So, it is not a real theft.

aerial on the roof
i might be able to get access
if i can get access to the roof i'm going to take my telescope and do some observing there

we had a problem with ours. it turned out to be caused by a new mobile transmitter.

its on the edge of a large park and is quite dark

user226528
@Run5k I have, but it was a long time ago. It dropped it in favor of ShareX. Of course, ShareX uses Greenshot's editor, which is totally okay.

i think they have got a tiny aerial for all 15 flats

10:12 PM
@FleetCommand, thanks for the advice... I will definitely take a look at ShareX.

or maybe its got dead birds or something on it
@DavidPostill how did they solve it?

@Burgi It was affecting freeview and they fitted a free filter. Similar to what is said here at800.tv/faq/what-will-happen-next (can't remember if it was the same company or not).

maybe i should hire @TOWMN to come and inspect the aerial

ty

10:22 PM
@Burgi We have individual aerials here in my mum's block of 18 flats.

i think ours are shared
i need to go up on the roof and check
i know the satellite dish is communal
there was a guy moving in today and they had got their van stuck in the underground carpark
it had fit in because it was fully loaded so was lower
but leaving it had risen up on the suspension and wouldn't now fit
it wasn't there when i returned from dinner so they must have figured it out

lol. probably let some air out the tyres :)

user226528
Hello, JourneymanGeek

we recently had a cherry picker stuck here when they were replacing the gutters. he drove over a manhole cover (which broke under the weight) and his front wheel sank into the hole and got struck. they had to jack up the truck first on it's stabilisers, then with another jack on bricks and let the tire down before they could get a steel plate under the wheel. was about 3 hours of amusement for the residents.

user226528
Amusement?

user226528
10:33 PM
Not irritation?

user226528
No obstruction or anger towards it?

why must everything be negative?

@FleetCommand laughing at their attempts to fix it. it was round the back of the block and not obstructing any of the residents.

user226528
@DavidPostill I see. Makes sense.

it is the british way to laugh at those having a worse day than us :)

10:35 PM
something like that :)
it was their own stupid mistake. he knew it was there and wouldn't take the weight. then he reversed over it, missed with the back wheel then crunch.

user226528
What kind of manhole cover breaks under the weight of a car? Aren't they made of iron?

user226528
Stupid question, sorry. It is obvious that because it broke, it could have not been cast iron.

cherry pickers are way heavier than a car
probably in the 5 ton range
the moog 23... which i think is also a synth

user226528
Hmm... Not very efficient for picking cherries, which is what I suppose they never do. ;)

lol

user226528

It was this one:

that sort of lorry is about 7.5 tonnes
