Here's the deal from all the benchmarks I'm seeing. Ryzen does not keep up with Intel's IPC, but makes up for it with the ability to run at higher clocks at lower TDPs. Their multithreading implementation is superior to Intel HTT; from what I can tell, this is due at least in part to a very wide core (Zen has 10-wide issue; compare to Skylake which has 8-wide issue).

Meh
I was about to ask my 2nd question/post ever on S.E.
And then I found it already has been answered:

Q: Office 2016 Advanced Setup

FiveOI just started the Office 2016 Setup/Installation on my Windows 10 PC. The installation worked fine and started automatically showing only this dialog: But there are no additional settings possible! I need to choose which programs I want to install and also add additional tools that are often ...

@Hennes but you escaped! \o/

In short, regular (mom & pop) end users need to use the office2016 deployement tool if they want to install normally.

okay...
I don't like how chat forces text to go into the main chat box even when another element on the page (except the search box) is focused.
This is why we have oddities like (U+0008 Backspace) getting inserted into chat text...

Q: I can enter U+0008 (backspace character) into a chat message under Firefox

derobertI typed a chat message including two pings. I believe I tab-completed @rumtscho and fully typed @MarthaF (since she doesn't tab complete). However, other people tell me that a Unicode character was inserted into the message; I can't see it: Originally, I abandoned this bug report for a lack of...

@bwDraco have you seen the messages i wrote shortly after 12:00 UTC?
about the trim thing

Haven't had a chance. Hold on...

wow, it sends the original pictures. no compression, no changes whatsoever

@bwDraco figured lol, thanks :)

Hmm.... $5 a month is tempting.

Does anyone know if there's an IP KVM switch that has a USB port or built-in LTE/4G modem support with a SIM card slot? Basically I need KVM access to a machine that is in a location with no internet connection and I need to troubleshoot it

that's ... deep
i guessing it does have 4g?
send a raspi presetup...
ask them to plug it in xD

I am thinking I may need to get an IP KVM switch and rig an external 4G modem somehow with a router

@qroberts that's more possible

Someone should make a KVM switch with all this built in, would kick ass for remote locations

Whoa
These look cool

@qroberts maybe but.... remote normaly means bad internet
no internet normally means == deliberate airgap

@djsmiley2k Here's the scenario: I have a marine vessel in port at a remote location, they have an airgapped SCADA system that controls valves, tanks, reads output from engines and generators onboard, etc. This system is on its own LAN and in order to properly troubleshoot it, it needs to be on that LAN so it can talk to the server.
If I plug it into another network it won't work the same so ideally I would need a KVM switch to control the machine remotely. An IP KVM switch would be best and it would need to be connected to the internet. I do have VSAT (satellite) internet onboard but the speed and latency makes it really hard to work with which is why I want a 4G/LTE connection instead.

I see
and you can't talk someone through it?

Not a 50-odd year old sailor, no lol

8:04 PM
Interestingly i used to work at a water company, and my job was to monitor a 3rd of the estate... scada systems and gprs modems and all that jazz
we'd get someone on site, but it sounds that's not viable...

And the issue is hardware related, the machine is BSOD'ing and wont boot into windows 100% of the time. KVM would be the way to go. I would go on site but these types of issues happen every month or 2, would be nice to have a solution going forward so I don't have to travel. Would save time and money

yeah
welp you can maybe stick around here
you never know when someone with the right knowledge will pop up

The link @MichaelFrank posted has some promising stuff on there, I'm looking at the different products right now

@MichaelFrank my girlfriend went "ooOOOoooOOOOOOoh!" at that picture

@Burgi of the rugby shirt?

yeah
she then started talking about rugby
i tuned out until i was needed again
apparently the all blacks are so good at egg chasing rugby because they practise with smaug's eggs
sorry that was racist to eggs
oh come on! that's comedy gold!

I'm pretty sure eggs aren't a race, so you're good.
Now if anyone happens to sexually identify as an egg, we may have a problem.

heh

@MichaelFrank @Burgi Well there are three users called "Egg" on SU ...
And 10 with "Hobbit" in their name
Looks like you might be in trouble :)

the humans were too busy cutting all the corners off their paper

Q: Why does the paper in Battlestar Galactica have the corners cut off?

Jonathan.In Battlestar Galactica (the reimagined series), as far as I can see all the paper have their 4 corners removed. A: ZFS endless resilvering

longneckCongratulations and uh-oh. You've stumbled across one of the better things about ZFS, but also committed a configuration sin. First, since you are using raidz1, you only have one disk worth of parity data. However, you had two drives fail contemporaneously. The only possible result here is data ...

./me flags @ThatBrazilianGuy's message as offensive

> hi bob
A college drinking game, popular in the 1980s. Students would sit around watching old Bob Newhart re-runs, and whenever anyone said "Hi Bob" everyone had to take a drink.

Bob
11:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek @allquixotic Now I want to set up a ZFS array on Windows. That's awesome recovery for the situation...

Cheers

@Bob how would you even approach doing that?

Bob
Heck. Having it on a single drive so I know which files are damaged would be amazing in itself.

@Bob I started it, I can end it too.
@allquixotic One moment while I kickmute myself.

Bob
@allquixotic That... is a very good question.
VM with raw drives and (internal) network sharing is probably overkill.

11:16 PM
Xen dom0 as a host, ZFS root, with a Windows domU with GPU passthrough and NTFS in a zvol?

Bob
I wonder how hard it'd be to get ZFS running on BoUoW

@Bob impossible, since Linux kernel modules don't work

Bob
@allquixotic Well, I'm more concerned about the data drives than the OS drives.
@allquixotic FUSE?

ZFS via FUSE maybe if they ever support FUSE (they don't, now, that I'm aware of)
but ZFS FUSE sucks
it's slow and feature deprived compared to ZoL
still, now you have me tempted
I want to try that next time I nuke my main system

Xen dom0 as a host, ZFS root, with a Windows domU with GPU passthrough and NTFS in a zvol?
that

Bob
@allquixotic Yea, apparently not :(
Maybe I should look into ReFS. But it's not as good.

11:18 PM
could try it with some USB drives maybe
./me goes out and buys 2 cheap flash drives to test this on :P
on second thought, 2 cheap SSDs
otherwise booting will take 10 minutes

Bob
I like how the FUSE request falls under WSL falls under Bash on Ubuntu on Windows which goes under Console/Command Prompt.
So do all uservoice requests for anything to do with WSL/Linux on Windows go under "Command Prompt"?
@allquixotic Heh. I have two cheap SSDs hooked up via USB. Not all that reliable though, they drop out fairly often.

@Bob sadly, the whole notion of Bash on Ubuntu on Windows is like saying "I just went out and bought automatic windows on a Tesla Model S on a road!"
the technical term WSL is much better

Bob
@allquixotic I'd rather keep Windows on bare metal personally... hm. Running Linux in a VM isn't so bad except for having to remember to start it up :\

also shows how inept the marketing goons are at Microsoft that the perfectly named Windows Subsystem for Linux gets named something absolutely wonky like "Bash on Ubuntu on Windows"

Bob
@allquixotic It is. But it only describes the subsystem BoUoW runs on, where the latter is the full package, I think.
Not quite the same thing.
(...yea, the name for BoUoW sucks)

11:22 PM
@Bob yeah, but people have used the subsystem (the kernel drivers, basically) to run non-Ubuntu distros, and it's trivial to run a non-bash shell, too

Bob
I suppose they have some half-baked plans to expand WSL further and run more things on it.

the key enabling technology is WSL

Bob
@allquixotic I wonder if it has anything to do with skirting possible GPL issues/requirements.
And also the partnership with Canonical probably includes the use of "Ubuntu" somehow.
bleh.

not sure where the GPL would play in; the thing they're emulating is the user<->kernel ABI of Linux, which is not GPL'able, even by the FSF's admission
you can write a proprietary, or BSD-licensed kernel that supports Linux's user<->kernel ABI and it's 100% legal

Bob
@allquixotic More the other "bundled" programs (coreutils, etc.)
Depends how far said bundling goes.

11:24 PM
basically so that when the x86 processor starts executing native code from a Linux/ELF binary and that code makes a syscall, that syscall can find its endpoints and have them run and behave as expected

Bob
They might be doing the old trick of downloading on-demand and claiming that's not "bundling".

it's actually really similar to what BSD did with their Linux ABI layer, I think
or even Brand/Z on Solaris
LX brand for Solaris I mean
but yeah, Solaris literally has a Solaris equivalent of WSL that's basically the "Solaris Subsystem for Linux" and it works really well (thanks to Joyent) - same design almost

Bob
@allquixotic github.com/dominicusin/zfs-win but read-only and dead :(

the Linux 2.6.x/ELF (mostly amd64, little bit of (fading) x86) ABI format is quickly gaining traction as an important binary platform... almost as important as the universally hated/adopted Win32/x86

Bob
@allquixotic You know what the irony there is?
ZFSoL runs on SPL...

11:29 PM
@Bob :D
I know, that's delicious
Solaris wants Linux's ABI because Linux has so much traction as a platform and has so many binaries built for it that are tough or impossible to build for Solaris.
Linux wants Solaris's filesystem because ZFS is the best filesystem in the world
I wonder if Linux userspace ZFS utilities that integrate with libzfs work on the Solaris kernel through the LX brand :D

Bob
@allquixotic You know. Could dodge WSL entirely and write a FS filter driver on Windows with SPL-for-Windows :P

@Bob is there a SPL-for-Windows? O_O

Bob
@allquixotic No, unfortunately... I meant a custom one :(

I think it'd be hard to write an SPL-for-Windows from scratch because the kernel source is closed, and certain very low-level things, like forking processes properly, are hard or impossible to do right without being able to change the kernel source as the WSL team did
they not only had to write two new drivers (extremely complex ones that I don't honestly think would be possible without the Windows source code) but also change the kernel base image, whiiiiich you couldn't do

HEY LOOK IT'S TOWMN!

Bob
11:33 PM
@allquixotic What about a SPL-for-Windows that runs on top of WSL?

@Bob: Don't suppose you need any big/heavy/craptons of cheap European electronics imported to Australia do you?
I'm desperate to make the airlines work for their money, and use up as much of my 4x32KG baggage allowance as I can.

@Bob possible in theory, if WSL exposes any hooks in kernelspace that you could build off of

Bob
@noitsbecky Uh. I really appreciate the offer, but I think I did enough importing back in January :P

@noitsbecky YOU DIDN'T DIE!

Except I only have like, 1x20KG of baggage, so I'll have to buy 3 suitcases and fill them with bricks, if I can't come up with anything else to bring
@Bob Not even a box of free hard drives?
(Really shitty old 1.5TB ones)

11:35 PM
@noitsbecky You have 128kg of baggage allowance? 0_0

@allquixotic actually, arn't there a few alternative wsl options now? Arch and suse?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yes.

Bob
@noitsbecky Ha, at this point I have too many hard drives without enough places to put them. But if you needed the weight, a box of HDDs would do it.

And I can't let the airlines just get off with doing nothing for it
@Bob Well I only have a box of 16, and they be only like 12-14KG in total

Bob
@allquixotic dokan-dev.github.io FUSE for Windows. So in theory, ZFS on FUSE on Windows could actually work.

11:36 PM
Now that you mention it, my rack server is about 35KG with 26 drives in it

Everyone's like HEY I GOT SO MANY HDDS I USE THEM AS PAPERWEIGHT meanwhile here I am spending 7% of my salary ON A SINGLE FUCKING 5400 RPM 1TB DRIVE.

!! s/arn/aren/

Pull out a few drives and put it in my other rackmount chassis, and I'll have two 30KG giant metal boxes I can check in!

@allquixotic @allquixotic actually, aren't there a few alternative wsl options now? Arch and suse? (source)

Only problem is I don't feel like lugging around two 30KG 4U rack servers while backpacking across Oz >_>
In addition to my actual luggage <_<

11:37 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy become @ThatUSAianGuy or @ThatSwedishGuy and you might not have that problem still O_O
or @ThatDanishGuy

@ThatBrazilianGuy Well if I ever come to Brazil, remind me to bring you a box

@allquixotic technically he is an AmericanGuy

lol, true :D

@allquixotic Swedish? I dunno... With all that hapenned last night in Sweden...

what happened in sweden?

11:39 PM
I don't know. No one knows!

meh small riot

You should come to Brazil this Friday! It's the beginning of carnaval!
Lots of noise, sweaty people, crowded streets (AND OH BOY I DO MEAN CROWDED), alcohol, more noise, more alcohol, people behaving promiscuosly, drugs, STDs, more noise and alcohol...

maybe someone tried to make them eat that rotting herring

@ThatBrazilianGuy I'm flying to Italy this friday :-/

Bob
@noitsbecky I wonder if there's anything worth your while to bring and resell, but tbh I have no idea what relative price differences are. And it's probably too much trouble.
@noitsbecky Oh. TRS might benefit you on the way out.

11:41 PM
@noitsbecky take fruit, i hear the australians LOVE it when you bring them fruit

@Burgi lol

Bob
But yea I paid like $120 on HDD shipping last month - which apparently costs more than the extension of your trip to AU.

@Bob Don't you have to like buy >$300 of shit in one day for that to work?
I'm unemployed and homeless, I doubt I'll be buying a load of luxury goods...

Bob
@noitsbecky Well... if you hadn't bought the laptop yet I would've suggested something like that.

@Burgi Only if they let me bring home a Dropbear in return
@Bob Dell have offered to refund the laptop
Tempted to take up the offer and buy myself the new Kaby Lake version instead

11:43 PM
@noitsbecky How can you be homeless and unemployed and have money to pay for hotels and international traveling?

Bob
@noitsbecky Still broken? :(

@noitsbecky i can't speak on their behalf but i'm sure they can work something out...

Bob
@noitsbecky Would cost a lot more though, no?
@Burgi That's a good way to get fined.

@Bob Other breakage. Fan went boom and now makes a grindy noise and vibrates like hell

Bob
@noitsbecky wtf. Is it just falling apart as you use it?

11:44 PM
Fixed it by yanking it around a bit, but they may be coming tomorrow/Friday to replace the heatsink/fan assembly
Which is fine cause the early units had misaligned heatsinks anyway (hence the overheating) and I was planning on getting that done regardless
@Bob Eh, half the falling apart is cause the last engineer left out half the screws, part of the heatsink, and broke a third of the plastic clips securing the base

@ThatBrazilianGuy clearly universities pay more than we thought

It is suddenly creaking and rattling a lot more, despite the fact it's built like a tank :-/
@ThatBrazilianGuy Credit cards
Also, I haven't paid for hotels yet

@Burgi I think I have a pretty good idea of what university pays, it's not that much, trust me.
@noitsbecky OOOOOOUUUCCCCCCHHHHHHH.

@noitsbecky is this wise?

Bob
@noitsbecky Sounds fairly normal. I usually break at least half the plastic clips.

11:46 PM
@Bob £400 or so? I'm also severely tempted by the 13" with OLED display. Even the pictures of it in reviews make it look OMFG.
@Burgi shrug

@noitsbecky Weren't you living in one (or multiple) for the past few months? Was it for free? O.o

Government cut off my retard benefit so I can't pay a personal assistant to tell me when I'm being stupid, so basically I now live in ignorance.

Bob
@noitsbecky Uhm. Yea. Not diving into debt sounds like a good idea :(
but then what do I know

@Bob Funny enough I hadn't broke a single one or lost a single screw in the 4-5 times I opened it before the engineer arrived...
@Bob Student loan aside I'm technically not in debt

@noitsbecky could you say that they retarded it?

11:48 PM
@Burgi Hurr durr.

Careful guys... A mod might show up.
I mean it both in jest and seriously.

Bob
@noitsbecky Well. If you're interested in TRS-ing it. Dell has a 20% off thing going on now here. Not sure what the deal is with import taxes going back to the UK though.

@ThatBrazilianGuy And ban me for good? I don't really care at this point. I ragequit the channel already so I'm not officially here.
@Bob :-o

> RETARD
verb (used with object)
1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.

But... We'd miss you! <\3

11:49 PM
One reason I didn't want to return mine is cause the Dell 10% off here stopped so I'd have to pay more to get an identical replacement
@ThatBrazilianGuy Nobody missed me in the last week I'd been banned

Bob
@noitsbecky I did :(

@noitsbecky actually we did

Bob
Actually quite a few people asked where you were.

it was talked about a lot

11:50 PM
@noitsbecky SEE?

Bob
@noitsbecky It's a 20% off but only on their ebay store
(yes. Dell AU has an ebay store.)

@Burgi Since they banned me for "I love Burgi" it's quite clear nobody cares about actual sense behind their decisions.
@Bob Aww <3

@Bob Not by name! >_>
Dell have told me several times the warranty is global by the way

@Burgi See, the problem is you're trying to apply logic here.

11:51 PM
@noitsbecky you were banned for the other thing and you know it

@Burgi What other thing? I love boobs? Hardly worse.

@noitsbecky It's a bit of a play on SWMNBN, referring to ka--na from a certain other room.

@noitsbecky thats who flagged you

Bob
@Burgi Eh. I'd rather not go into a blaming arg here since apparently it was borderline enough that (with history?) a mod elsewhere agreed. But I wasn't even awake then and don't really know what happened.

@Burgi Urgh. The one who alternates between whinging about being blocked and then giving me more reasons to keep him blocked? Urgh.
Wish blocks were reciprocal, like on Facebook.

@Bob fair enough
anyway... you'll be back @noitsbecky, you are addicted to the drama you cause

11:56 PM
@Bob Yeah that's kinda why I ragequit. Can't be arsed with stupid interpersonal politics
@Burgi No, I just like Bob.
