Somebody is running a spambot on the Instagram #cat hashtag :\

Is it... Is it @cat?!?! :-o
Speaking of whom... Has anyone seen TOWMN?!

Who knows how many accounts I've reported :\
> We have taken [username]'s account down.

Thanks for reporting this account. We've removed it from Instagram because it violated our Community Guidelines. Your feedback is important in helping us keep the Instagram community safe.

2:02 AM
(Instagram app on Windows 10.)
All of these support request updates less than 30 minutes ago? Spam account takedowns.
Instagram should have a way of stopping spam at source.

@ThatBrazilianGuy not yet.

Bob
2:37 AM
> I feel like if I take in that little bit too much coffee, I cross the threshold of "LET'S BE PRODUCTIVE" to "LET'S REFRESH REDDIT LIKE I DIDN'T JUST DO THAT 30 SECONDS AGO AND HOPE FOR SOMETHING NEW AND ENTERTAINING OH LOOK A SQUIRREL."
lol

2:51 AM
@Bob who wouldn't be distracted by SQUIRREL?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wouldn't... the drop bears got them all

3:25 AM
@Bob
Do you think it's possible to visit both Melbourne and Sydney in the space of a week?

Oo
@noitsbecky might depend on what you intend to do

3:50 AM
any reason why elevated command prompt has no access to restart defender service on 8.1?

4:00 AM
So I just went through my Instagram account and between the list of blocked accounts not yet taken down and the list of support update notifications, I had reported 44 accounts promoting "get followers/likes" as spam. Instagram still has a dozen of them left to handle.
It's absolutely insane how serious an issue this is. I have never seen anything like this on Twitter.
...that figure actually includes the porn posts that were reported earlier.

4:36 AM
@JoeStavitsky I wonder if it runs as SYSTEM

Bob
@noitsbecky Sure. Fly or drive?
You can drive to Syd from Melb in one day (~12 hours).
Fly is maybe 4 hours including airport times, actual flight time ~1.5 hours.
But. If you want both in a week, that only gives you 2-3 days in each dest.
So it depends on what you want to visit/see at each.
If you fly you can get a solid 3 days at each.
But the big destinations are doable in 2-3 days, yea. You won't get to see all the smaller dests though. Assuming you don't plan to just sit in a hotel testing LTE all day :P

I've enabled autoflagging on my account using Smokey. Using data from tens of thousands of posts and nearly a hundred heuristics, SmokeDetector has the ability to identify spam with extremely high accuracy. Users can volunteer to have SmokeDetector command their accounts to automatically flag posts, with adjustable settings that allow them to specify how much inaccuracy is tolerated.
72
Q: Can a machine be taught to flag spam automatically?

AndyTL;DR: We did it, so... yes. What is this? Charcoal is the organization behind the SmokeDetector bot and other nice things. This bot scans new posts across the entire network for spam posts and reports them to various chatrooms where people can act on them. If a post has been created or edite...

5:05 AM
@Bob I can't drive. At least not a car. I was more thinking bus/train if those exist over there.
@Bob darn, you know me too well...

Bob
@noitsbecky Yea you def don't want a 10 hour motorcycle ride, I think...

I get 12GB of free roaming data in Oz

Bob
Not sure how buses/trains work. There's a few intercity trains, but IIRC there's rail gauge issues...
idk
@noitsbecky wonder if you can get access to the full network with that... or which network you get :P
Telstra only provides limited access to MVNOs

Still. As long as there's time to see a bit of both places I'll be happy. Since this is only a problem because I cant decide which of the two to visit so I gotta do both
@Bob in the old days it used to be pretty much all of them. But as regulators forced the prices down the networks have become more selective in who they do deals with...
@JourneymanGeek fox hunting, obviously

Bob
@noitsbecky It's more that even if you're on Telstra you might not get 4GX access, even if you're on Optus you might not get "4G Plus"

5:10 AM
Basically I've figured out its "only" £250 extra to tack a flight to Oz and back onto my existing itinerary next week and well, it's not like anything cheaper is ever going to come up.
It's like a third the cost of making an extra trip. So yeah, my credit card company is gonna love me.

Bob
lol
@noitsbecky you going somewhere else too?
@noitsbecky Yea, you'll be able to see both. I'd suggest flying between them, if you can.

@Bob I hear this operator that gives free roaming either throttles or blocks a lot of stuff so probably not going to get great service either way
@Bob lets say... Mission creep?

Bob
A Syd => Melb train apparently takes 12 hours anyway...

@Bob do Qantas do domestic flights? At sane prices?
@Bob eh, I've done 17 hours on trains in a day before (for fun) and 20 hours for work

Bob
@noitsbecky They do. Any particular reason for Qantas, vs Virgin etc?
@noitsbecky On the plus side, you can track all the coverage blackspots along the train route :P

5:12 AM
@Bob I get frequent flyer benefits (business lounge access, double baggage allowance etc) with Qantas

Bob
@noitsbecky btw. I think train costs more.
$66 Eco Saver, $90+ Economy

Pah. It costs that much for a 2 hour train journey in the UK
I like trains. As long as they're air conditioned.

Bob
lol
Jetstar does $70-$90 flights.
Qantas you're looking at $150+

@Bob ah but does that come with free champagne in the airport lounge?

Bob
Jetstar being a budget carrier of course

5:15 AM
@Bob so +$50 to check in a bag... $25 to pick a seat, etc?

Bob
@noitsbecky probably! :P

Our worst budget carriers charge you to check in online. And more to check in offline.
And $100 to print your boarding pass, if you forget to do so yourself...
They'll be charging to use the air stairs next. To encourage passengers to bring their own ladder of course.

Bob
@noitsbecky ...I don't think Jetstar does that. Tiger Air might...
Jetstar is owned by Qantas btw

Oh nice

Bob
but you won't get points etc
it's their budget brand
no checkin (w/o fee anyway), no meals (1.5 hr flight, meh)
my last domestic flight was a Qantas turboprop (Dash 8-400?) to Canberra... was a nice flight

5:18 AM
@Bob well it was meant to start off as Glasgow, then it became Spain, then it became Italy, the it became Thailand and Malaysia, then it became Singapore and Australia... Because each step was "only" a couple hundred dollars more than the last

Bob
o.O

@Bob I have a mate who is fascinated by those things... Not so much myself, I prefer led lighting, power sockets and WiFi.
So yeah, Glasgow => Australia. The ultimate of mission creeps...

Bob
ha
it was also the first plane I was allowed to use my phone on, so.

I wonder if I could add new Zealand too, just to tick that off
Heck why only a week, when I could stay for a month. Heck why do I even have to come back at all?
All I need is a laptop, and an international Dell warranty, and I could happily live anywhere in the world*
*With decent fibre broadband

5:41 AM
...wait a sec. We get 50 close votes on SU now?

For some reason I'm thinking that scales with reputation

@JourneymanGeek Does it make sense to choose bluetooth earphones over wired earphones to listen to music from laptop at home?
I am concerned from health perspective.

@Boris_yo ... There's no proof 2.4 GHz waves are harmful at approved power

@JourneymanGeek I have JVC bluetooth earphones. They are not wireless 2.4GHz radio.

Oh, that would be nice...

so TOWMN is back
my fault probably because i said their many names 3 times

Lol
TOWMN is usually ok. Except when they aren't
No no faults :p

"amends" on that site have come in...
all the so called issues are due to client services not understanding responsive web design

Does anyone who isn't a web designer?

good point

9:48 AM
I find it difficult to believe that this question hasn't been asked before: https://superuser.com/questions/1173257/when-moving-data-from-one-hard-drive-to-another-how-much-free-space-does-the-so
Can someone search if the question can be marked as duplicate? It's embarrassing.

@Burgi How about you give them a small presentation? - What is Responsive Design and why do we need it and show a few examples of 1/ how it works when done properly and 2/ What goes wrong when you don't use it

we tried that and the people now complaining are the ones who rudely kept working on their laptops during the presentation

@Burgi :/ Send them a copy of the presentation and tell them to pay attention next time :)
@user598527 Hmm. It will be just as embarrassing if it's marked as a duplicate :)

its a terrible question

10:16 AM
OK, more downvotes thanks to sharing on chat

10:33 AM
@user598527 if you edit your question to fit the quality guidelines i'm sure some of the downvotes would be retracted

10:56 AM
@user598527 its worth framing the question in terms of a real world problem

11:13 AM
You're free to do so, I'm not sure if I want to draw attention to it anymore

@user598527 It's your question, your responsibility, and your future possible question ban. Think about that for a moment ...

Its also unfair to the person who answered it

11:36 AM
I'm not asking for deletion obviously.
deleting is bad, I agree

@Bob huh only $30 extra for first, I'm tempted
@Boris_yo Bluetooth operates at 1/10th the power of WiFi and 1/100th of a mobile phone.
Oh yeah I forgot I ragequit this channel
I'm just here cos Bob.

THEN WB?
wow caps are awesome

@djsmiley2k CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL

12:45 PM
@noitsbecky That's 100 times safer than Wi-Fi! I was wearing tinfoil hat all this time and you dared to take it from me? Thanks!
.. Becky

@noitsbecky why did you ragequit?

I wonder if my printer got old... Bought it back in 2012.
There are slim white lines in a graphic.
Or just gaps where instead supposed to be ink.

@Boris_yo @noitsbecky may be wrong here. Bluetooth class 1 has a max permitted power of 100mW ... which is the same as the EU permitted max power for WiFi.

@Boris_yo is that hebrew?

@Burgi He does live in Israel so probably yes ...

12:59 PM
i never look at peoples profiles
:)

@Burgi Because of the suspension?

it was a bit harsh
also to ragequit properly you need people know you've ragequit

@Burgi It wasn't the first time the bot had been abused ... or the first suspension
Feb 13 at 20:35, by SevenSidedDie
@noitsbecky And on that note, considering the existing notes on your chat account, reconsider how you use chat or start expecting increasingly long suspensions.

1:19 PM
my 2nd point stands

hello I have a weird folder in one PC(not mine) in C:\Users\Add\Downloads\Video and folders are around 10GB what I found weird is it looks like it is windows 10 with extracted folders and folder names are 10, boot, efi, sources, support? and this PC has windows 10 original, what could have brought it here?

user error?
is the primary user a dev or "superuser"?
could they have been making win10 boot disks?

no they don't make boot disks. he is just a superuser not dev of any kind.

have you asked the user?

yeah! He says he doesn't know how these files came or why they are there
let me give insight of folders
woah! didn't expect this huge :P sorry

1:48 PM
hmmm?
i missed it

no here is it
there is even some strange en_windows_10_home_10547_x64_dvd.iso

disk images

is it safe to delete?

either your user is lying or someone else is using the machine to make boot disks
you've backed up the machine, right?

^ haha! user has probably not lying cause he gave me permission to delete whatever I feel not right..
And no my friend(user) doesn't keep backups

1:53 PM
proceed with caution then
have they been downloading torrents?

yes he downloads pirated games, movies etc etc
moved to recycle bin and I am still safe. Should I proceed to permanent delete?

i cannot say but if you feel that, in your judgement, it is safe to proceed without a backup...

2:14 PM
>_>
@DenisKa most people have no idea what's on their PC after a while

@Burgi some ass hat decided to ban me on my birthday with some made up excuse?

@noitsbecky now. Its not nice to call people asshats.

i didn't know it was your birthday, you hadn't mentioned it

And yeah, while we do handle things differently here sometimes - what he did seemed appropriate in that scenario.

happy belated birthday, i hope you had fun (up to a point)

2:28 PM
@DenisKa looks like he extracted the iso using 7z or something

China still relies on XP. Wow.

xp is vulnerable to buffer overflow not so much secure

lol
whut?
@AkshaySingh Citation needed

@JourneymanGeek I could not have said it better

2:43 PM
XP's not secure cause its no longer supported

ya may be that's the reason
is Windows 10 is secure ?

@AkshaySingh for a certain value of secure

@JourneymanGeek

No OS is completely secure

hm i agree with you

2:44 PM
But windows 10 is currently getting updated, and there's a good chance known threats will be patched expeditiously.

but what are the reasons that they make the OS so vulnerable

They don't.
OSes are written by people.
Very smart people. But OSes are also complicated
And so people make mistakes, often without knowing.

then external party software also make some vulnerability

ALL SOFTWARE IS <CENSORED>
ALL HARDWARE IS TERRIBLE

2:46 PM
;p
That's funnier, and less likely to get flagged.

How to start learn about these vulnerability ? @JourneymanGeek

Beats me.

for what?

I mean, its such a broad question
And possibly the wrong one.

So how hackers get so much knowledge ?

2:50 PM
By not asking questions in random chatrooms ;p
More seriously, there's script kiddies, and there's proper hacker types.
For the latter, you need real intellectual curiocity
Knowledge isn't served on a plate. You need to wrestle it to the ground and rip it out yourself.

ok then tell how to wrie bots
write*

lol
I'm not a programmer
as shocking as it seems.

Bob
@noitsbecky looks like you get a separate buffet and further reclining seats, that's all

3:18 PM
the OS becomes vulnerable when they want to make a system that interconnects everything to everything else , and does a lot of things. Like the bank is vulnerable , because it insists on being on the external web, not limited to its internal servers.
People want to remote and control a computer for good purposes, this same direct connections to the system can be utalised to . . . . control the comptuer for bad purposes.
They want to have software to run immediatly direct off the web, as oposed to 5 manual steps , to do the same thing, soooo software can run off your computer from the web, l
When the systems are full of layers of remote operations, and remote control and remote download and install, it makes it WAY easier for the users to do what they want to do. People are not going to give up the pure simplicity and ease of everything to be done for you. It is like having your windows open in your home, you want a nice fresh breeze from outside, and so you get everything else lurking outside that can come in.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek looks like Dell's version of the Stream :P ebay.com.au/itm/322221768364?_mwBanner=1&varId=511124872283

@Bob: totally is

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm halfway tempted

Once they can access the computer in any way, no software can be made like ever (almost) that would not be able to be attacked or controlled in some way. once everything can fly in through your window, then you have to secure everything inside your house, which would be near impossible, because the windows are all open and the door is unlocked.

Bob
also, you're not on steam anymore: not sure what you mean by Streisand here @JourneymanGeek (gitter?)

3:29 PM
Why the bank has a big vault they use for show & tell, but when the entire banking system is dependant on 50,000 exposed USB ports (at the bank itself) , that can be used to remove everything from the virtual vault. while sitting half way across the country :-)
I think chace bank (specific) is being hacked regular like, becuase thier "vault" is left open.

@Bob gitter

What extension do you use for Chrome for form recovery? Lazarus?
Do you know if there are better alternatives?

form recovery?

@Burgi Yes. Healthcare company logo.
@DavidPostill What's the max permitted Wi-Fi in EU? I don't live there.
@OliverSalzburg You mean Keepass syncs through Google Drive?
@OliverSalzburg Oh okay. I need data sync actually. Wondering what mobile password app can compare to LastPass. It's Android app with internal browser got really good. Not sure there are alternatives.

@Boris_yo Yeah. But it's in no way specific to KeePass. The database file just rests on that storage

3:35 PM
@Boris_yo i still am clueless as to what you are trying to do

On mobile I either transfer that one password using QR codes (through KeePass plugin) or I use an Android port of KeePass
I usually prefer the first, because it doesn't involve me having to type that nasty master password on my mobile
In this whole topic, you always have to put the security vs convenience aspect back into your mind and ask yourself if you're only kidding with yourself regarding your security. If you think it's a problem that all your passwords aren't easily available to you on any device at any time, you're doing security wrong

@Boris_yo 100mW as I said in the previous comment:

@Boris_yo @noitsbecky may be wrong here. Bluetooth class 1 has a max permitted power of 100mW ... which is the same as the EU permitted max power for WiFi.
"the same as..."

@DavidPostill ^^ I found you in the library of babel

4:52 PM
@allquixotic rotlfmao :)
How did you spot it amongst all that garbage?

@DavidPostill well, out of the 10^4377 possible 3200 character passages in the library, I just randomly happened upon that one

I wonder if there are any more mentions of me in hexagon

Quick! Everybody star the truth before he wakes up :)
There. It's pinned as well ;p

I wonder if you could DMCA the Library of Babel

@BenN @BenN @allquixotic Notice also "trolling" is not so far from his name ...

or if the Library of Babel could DMCA the copyists who steal from it

I like this:

@Burgi Flagged as it contains a rude word :)

The CSS of this room just got updated!

@Rahul2001 Really?

@DavidPostill Uhm, it suddenly appeared to have because the theme color in chrome on mobile changed but now it's gone back so I suspect chrome glitched
This is weird
Ah right, it got confused with the The Guardian page that I have open in the next tab.

@JourneymanGeek I agree! He even had a virtual machine folder of over 100GB space. When I opened it was clean OS and nothing inside.. and I asked him he said "i don't know".. hahah!

@Burgi Not trying to do. Trying to ask if that printing quality implies issue with printer.

7:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek if you think a 24 hour ban with no forewarning for saying "I love boobs" and "I love Burgi" you're just as mad as he was
@Bob And I get to stay separated from the muggles!
Anyway. I'm out.

Bleh. My old Nexus 7 can't play a 720p HD video stream without the CPU choking.
(trying to stream a previous CSI Dolphins basketball game from the OnDemand page—the video player is utterly unable to play it smoothly)
Clearly, this is asking too much of the poor old Tegra 3.

8:15 PM
@bwDraco CSI: Dolphins? Crime fighting dolphins?!!!
Was New York, Miami, Las Vegas not enough?

...I'm not going to embarrass myself by ruining another joke.

Awww, I walked away for a couple minutes, what happened?
But for reals, the stream could just be poor. I know OnDemand here is often terribly delivered.
Does 720p YouTube stutter as well?

In the browser, it does.
(don't have the app on this device)

9:11 PM
Trying another browser...
Maybe Firefox will work.

Some time ago I asked why my YouTube would show Singapore as the content region for me. Turns out, there's a content region selector at the bottom of the page. No idea why it was on SG

So, it seems the real reason is that the tablet is running out of RAM. facepalm

There's nothing wrong with encrypting the same data twice using different keys and algorithms, is there?

@Rahul2001 You just need to remember which order it was encrypted in, I suppose.

But is this more secure?

9:25 PM
10
A: can multiple encryption of data with multiple keys increase the security?

S.L. BarthYes, multiple layers of encryption using different algorithms and different keys make the encryption as hard as the hardest in the chain. IIRC this was adressed in Bruce Schneier's book Applied Cryptography (2nd edition). But the important part is to use different algorithms, or at least differe...

In my understanding, as long as the keys and IVs are independent, you're at least not making it worse

9:43 PM
This looks like an awesome way to cut your legs off:

9:53 PM
Not a fan of doing this because of NAND endurance constraints, but created a swapfile on the device's internal memory.
(obviously, it's rooted)
That seems to have solves the problem.
