12:05 AM
Onto another topic: I'm seeing a lot of recommendations against giving kids Werther's Original hard candies for Halloween; is it really that bad? I personally go through them dozens at a time the few times I have a bag of these candies to myself.

0_0
My granma used to love those things
totally could see how overprotective parents would see it as a choking risk

Jolly Ranchers are just as much a choking hazard yet are not at all uncommon in trick-or-treaters' bags.
I kinda remember seeing the occasional Werther's Original in my trick-or-treat bags over a decade ago but those are rare.
I don't like giving kids cheap chocolate.

I want to give them real treats. Given enough money, I would not hesitate to hand out Lindor truffles (the ghost and jack-o-lantern variety, e.g. lindtusa.com/shop/…).
Then again, will young kids even enjoy fine chocolate of this sort?
(My parents don't want me to give out expensive chocolate of this sort, saying it's a waste.)
If anything, I'd just drop a few Werther's Original hard candies into their baskets and bag.

Bob
Heh. Not such a big thing here.
Haven't had one in years. I'm not sure what I'd do if someone turned up this year.

12:19 AM
Spending what will likely be several hundred dollars on expensive premium chocolate doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but at the same time, I want kids to get the best treats out there.

Bob
Hundred? o.O

I hope I don't have to buy Lindor truffles by the case...

Bob
10 bucks buys you a decent sized box...

Well, not where I live, but some places have loads of kids.

Bob
I only see 0-1 every year.

12:23 AM
Is giving trick-or-treaters high-end chocolate worth it?
I personally hate M&Ms and other "cheap" chocolate, having grown up with Lindt and Godiva.
The vast majority of the chocolate we buy is Lindt, either Lindor truffles or Excellence bars.

@allquicatic Yeah, smart, attractive, well traveled and mature American lady. Don't see too many of them around here!
@allquicatic Yeah read that earlier today.
Like wtf. -_-

Bob
12:59 AM
@Dog And you plan to move to AU... don't expect lower prices :P
Though our GST is half your VAT, so there's that...

Dog
@Bob I don't. But I do expect higher wages :P

@Dog did she indicate her availability to you and vice versa?

Bob
1:33 AM
@Dog Best of luck with that. Actually, I have no idea how we compare with the UK.

1:43 AM
@bwDraco i would bet it isnt, but most of the things you mentioned are not used much around here, because. Some people will not let thier kids have AnyThing that can be unwrapped and re-wrapped. for the past 5 years i only give up stuff that it sealed wrapped.
for 2 reasons, 1 some parents and others (like candy checkers at the FD) will up and toss it, and #2 IF any shenanigans are going on via anybody else , everything i ever handed the lil' bastards has to be the sealed variety, so nobody even partly tries to say i had anything to do with it.
i mean depending on a kids memory for where they aquired something :-) would be an error. Did we get it from there , or there?

So, if I'm not comfortable removing the HSF from my laptop's CPU and GPU, should I just bring my laptop to a repair shop to get the thermal paste replaced?

@bwDraco ask boris he did it hisself. If you take it to a shop get an agreement that they will also fix anything else they dislodge in the process, if you discover yet another minor issue after they dismember it and reassemble it.

@bwDraco presumably yes

because of minor additional problems being added at tech shops , it was the main reason we quit taking stuff in, even very high end high ticket stuff.

erf
the user whose PC I am supposed to replace seems to be on MC

minimum was 2 trips , 1 to fix the first thing, and second to fix what they slopped together or didnt check. wheras an idiot (like me) doing it i was way slower and way more carefull with everything , given that i am not being paid $200 an hour :-)

2:30 AM
...ordered a tube of AS5, coming tomorrow with Amazon Prime.
There is no doubt the thermal paste has gone bad.
Thermal paste removed:

what about the pads? thermal crust is more like it

The paste had hardened and clearly needs to be replaced.
Not too sure about what to do with the pads (including the one that was torn from one of the memory chips)...

they either go back with the exact same position , or you use new ones with a new crush
meaning it is better to not remove or change what you do not replace with new.

I'll probably add a tiny bit of paste there and reinstall the heatsink.

2:47 AM
most people would say that the thermal goop was probably still working, as long as the device was not jostled about and the heatsinked moved. I tend to disagree , and most people re-doing it will gain at least a few Cs
meaning it doesnt look too bad, as in that would solve everything, but it should liven things up and have less throttle. do we get to see the fan dust?
why is it so clean inside, do you live in a plastic bubble :-)

Fan's mostly clear of dust.

and be sure to pre-lube or grind the as5 into the porus surfaces , like it shows at thier web site. before applying the thermal compound, you smear it around the heatsink , then remove most of it , before doing the application itself.
that serves 3 purposes, it grinds/waxes the surfaces with the metal dust in the compound, it gets oil/greace deep in the metal for that deep fat fryer contact, it adds a thin layer that will exist everywhere even if you miss on whatever squish application you use for the final.
and it can also keep oxides (coper oxide) from existing or forming

3:05 AM
Is there a way to use an old router to take wifi signal (broadcasted from another router) and split it down to its ethernet ports, so ethernet-only devices can use the internet connection?

Bob
@DemCodeLines Yes.

@Bob Without an ethernet cable connection for the second router?

Bob
@DemCodeLines Yes.

How so?

Bob
It's built into most firmware under the name "wireless bridge" or similar.
It's also in most third-party firmware (openwrt, dd-wrt, etc.)

3:14 AM
Is there any decent tutorial out there?
There are a bunch of ethernet-only appliances and no ethernet port anywhere close, so I have been trying to figure out how to make it all work.

3:34 AM
there are YousaTubes for doing such things youtube.com/watch?v=ByB8vVGBjh4 I donno myself.

3:55 AM
@DemCodeLines the hard part is finding a third party firmware for your router
and that should come with a tutorial

Bob
@Aibobot Lots of first-party firmware already have the option.
And have a built-in "tutorial" (read: wizard).
Of course, since we don't even know the router model, there's really not much point in going any further.

@Bob I suppose

Bob
@Aibobot I'm pretty sure my old old g-only router from pre-2006 had the option.

@bwDraco the intel 'standard' paste is kinda thick. You know its dead when it crumbles
@Bob I don't recall seeing it on my asus or dlink

Bob
@Aibobot I'm also reasonably sure my current Asus one has it. Can check when I get home.
In any case, we still don't know the model or even brand in question.
And that annoys me. Because I feel like a broken record having to ask for it every damn time.

4:12 AM
lol

Bob
@Aibobot Heck, apparently you can even set up the bridge with WDS, which apparently works with wired clients (?). Which is absolutely shit, and probably not supported anymore on new routers, but that's how it worked a decade ago.

eww
eww eww eww eww ewwwwwwwwwww

Bob
lol
Actually, I always thought WDS was only for use as a wireless repeater, but 2005 forum posts suggest wired clients work too.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I've lost that old router by now, so no testing there.
But I think a $20 TP-LINK does it too...

@Aibobot It's IC Diamond. The paste was completely dry.
I have a syringe of Arctic Silver 5 coming in tomorrow.

Bob
Ah, no, that uses WDS too :P
Ok, so wireless client is a bit rarer than I thought. Bleh.
@bwDraco No local stores?

Also, why do we have to make web applications that have to run on IE7, even though, when IE7 came out, it was common to just install desktop applications. So, why not install the desktop application that is required to use my service, like Firefox or Chrome?
No, it's a website, so it has to run in my browser!
RAGE!
Also, good morning

Bob
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? There was a Chinese Age of Mythology expansion? This year?!?!
@OliverSalzburg ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww IE7
...which we're still supporting

:D
It's always these people, who refuse to install a proper browser, but have Candy Crush linked on the desktop

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I have Candy Crush linked on my desktop start menu.
Never opened it, but it's there...
godammit Microsoft

And, no, it's not the Candy Crush that ships with Windows, because that doesn't allow them to share their highscore to Facebook as easily
So, for months, I've been fighting with Arcserve support over a warning in UDP, which still nobody can even tell me the meaning of. So they ran this "SQL script" last week (I think I shared). And now no backups are running at all anymore
And I didn't get any alerts, because, technically, it's not a failure state, as the jobs are "stuck". So they didn't really fail

Bob
@OliverSalzburg UDP?
@OliverSalzburg We don't need no timeouts where we're going! :P

quick question
I'm trying to install an odbc driver for visual foxpro
I've installed the following msi VFPOLEDBSetup

and after the install, when typing the odbcin the command line , I still do not have the odbc for visualfoxpro
as you can see

@AndyK cause I'm on a shitty work PC I do not trust

7:29 AM
and after clicking on Ajouter
I still have this

yeah, this is a question for the main site.
Visualfoxpro is... oldschool?

@Aibobot not sure if I'm playing some kind of turing's test game but visualfox pro is old school

Yes, its oldschool
and may not work with modern question

Can anyone recommend some solution to share a wired internet connection on a Windows PC with an Android phone? Yes, I know about WiFi
Can you USB tether the other way around?
I would prefer something where I don't have to set up another WiFi access point right now :P

9:05 AM
@OliverSalzburg I think the phone would need to support reverse tethering

@Aibobot I've never seen something like that mentioned in the settings on mine

I think my CM stuff fif it
did

so using the pc's network, on the phone?

Q: How to use PC's internet on Android phone through USB cable

clawsI'm using Android 4.4.2 (on Micromax Unite 2 - A106). I've a PC at home which has highspeed broadband internet connection. I don't have wireless router or access point. I just want to use PC's internet connection on my phone. I've tried multiple methods but none seems to work. Method 1: Using na...

9:09 AM
Or, well, I would also have another free port on our switch

that's possibly old version...
but should work or be close enough, depending on the exact version you have.

@djsmiley2k Sexy

good luck, i've never tried it!

that looks... burny?

9:13 AM
Is the torn piece of the thermal pad on one of the memory chips going to be an issue?

oh god heatpads, ick
i'd remove all that crap, and use proper paste tbh @bwDraco

@djsmiley2k That's due to odd reflection of the light from the camera's flash, as well as scraping during removal of dried and hardened thermal paste.

the problem being the distance, those pads look quite thick
being torn itself isn't an issue
i'd take the torn bit off, and stick it back onto the heat sink

It'll fit when the heatsink is attached.

yup, but you don't want it to overlap slightly

9:16 AM
I doubt it, the alignment of the heatsink is very precise.

@djsmiley2k pretty hard to replace pads with paste

As many as seven screws hold it down.
I can place a tiny dab of paste where the pad is torn to compensate...

yeah, espevcially big thick ones like that

@djsmiley2k Not working. I don't know why, but whenever I enable tethering, all Windows network related panels freeze until I disconnect the device. I have the same shit on my laptop. Then I switch cables and switch them back and sprinkle some magic dust on the PC and then it works

(and I suspect they have different roles. Anything with pads prolly dosen't get that hot)

9:17 AM
I don't have the paste yet. I'm expecting it sometime today.

But I'm out of magic dust right now. So shitty WiFi it is for now

@OliverSalzburg #:/

@Aibobot Memory's rated for 5 Gbps, not the crazy 7 Gbps that many cards use.

memory typically dosen't get as hot as a CPU or GPU

ive had cpus shipped with pads :/

9:20 AM
The GPU's been idling high and overheating even when it shouldn't. This is what normal temps were under full load:

oh god, that lady's voice is annoying

Now it just overheats even at less than full load, under similar ambient temperatures.
2 days ago, by bwDraco
...my laptop's GPU is idling at up to 60C, and this is in relatively low ambient temperatures.

When did they extend MAC addresses this way? O__o

Wanted to get a pro at first but decided to DIY this job after a brief glance at the service manual indicated that it's easier than I thought it would be.
It just involves removing a series of screws in a particular (and well-marked) order.

see you guys
thanks to Puppy Bot

9:32 AM
@OliverSalzburg assuming its a mac address based thing

btw, here is my question

Q: how to install a visualfox pro odbc on windows 7?

Andy KI'm currently on a windows 7 laptop, on which I want to install a visualfoxpro driver. On Microsoft's page, it says Visualfoxpro's ODBC driver has been discontinued. I've used instead Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro 9.0 SP2 but yet after the install, when I'm trying to add any drive...

Dog
@OliverSalzburg It's either going to be WiFi or Bluetooth
@OliverSalzburg They didn't. That's not a MAC address.
@Aibobot It isn't

@Dog its clearly not a mac address. For all we know tho, it might be one of the things they use to generate that

Dog
@OliverSalzburg Really shitty drivers
@Aibobot So could the alignment of the stars
Oh god australian girls in here talking about a "hot" 13 year old guy

A: Very long 'Unique ID' in Windows 2008 DHCP Server Leases - why? What is the device?

Dusan BajicSplit the string in pairs and convert hex to ascii, you will get cc3e.5f92.2bb3-Vlan-interface1, it is most probably one of your HP switches registering.

@DavidPostill well that was obivious! D:

@DavidPostill Yeah, had found that. Converting to ASCII didn't bring up anything useful
@Dog It's the Google USB driver, and it's a Google phone. But that's not supposed to be an argument against what you said ;D

9:55 AM
@OliverSalzburg Search for "long mac address in dhcp" there are a lot of other possibilities ...

@DavidPostill Yeah, too many! :D
I was surprised that this is even allowed

And hoooooome

@AndyK does the XP driver not work?

@Burgi it was the wrong odbc driver
I was using the 64 instead of the 32

ah

10:02 AM
such a pain ...

i hadn't refreshed the question
we had the same issue a few years ago when we migrated from 2003 terminal server to 2012

Lol. @AndyK seeeeee?

I write as I think :p
I seriously need to learn to do this :-)
I've been less stressed over mod stuff lately but I still need to not take things so seriously.
I know this is a weird time for me, but I didn't sleep well due to this whole laptop repair job that I'm afraid of messing up.
Clearly, the thermal paste needs to be replaced, but I'm worried I might have damaged the GPU while cleaning the old, dried-up paste.
I'm also concerned about the torn thermal pad.

hey @JourneymanGeek not sure what you mean

@AndyK as my robotic sock puppy said. Asking a question on the main site helped

12:28 PM
@OliverSalzburg I suspect it's more than that - I've had the same with a Samsung phone and a Nokia phone, I think it's a particular interface (Old NDIS?) in Windows that has issues with ... well it's job

fucking umbraco

I've had this discussion multiple times in here before, too
basically Windows is retarded and (yes, even out of the box) defaults to initializing USB RNDIS devices with a driver that's either using an extremely old version of NDIS, or is just plain buggy; but the driver that implements NDIS 6.x (I'm guessing 6.0 but might be 6.1), "USB RNDIS6", works better
it's 100% hardware-independent, too
make sure you're using rndismp6.sys and usb80236.sys under driver file details -- if you're using rndismpx.sys, that's the fucked version

Dog
@allquicatic Hah, nice one
@allquicatic Yeah couldn't remember the specifics, but that's what I was thinking of.
I never actually figured it out myself, just ended up giving up.

12:45 PM
@Dog a USB RNDIS device is my primary internet connection, so I couldn't exactly just give up
I had done repeated tests where it worked like a charm on Linux so I knew it was a software issue

@Dog Ah, interesting. Good to know it's not just my phone
@allquicatic Is that the new platform to post quality content now? :D

@OliverSalzburg I was just having the problem with XCOM2 and it was way more in my face than Network and Sharing Center freezing, so I looked around and figured out a solution
1
A: RNDIS Connection Lag On Windows, Not Linux

allquicaticI was experiencing an issue where a certain game (XCOM 2) would experience 3-5 seconds of freezing followed by about 0.5 seconds of running normally, repeatedly, in a loop, starting at the part where the main menu is doing 3d rendering of the opening scene. The intro videos render fine. Obviously...

there @OliverSalzburg better? :P

Checkmarking "Backup all sectors including free space" would defeat the purpose of backup?
Kind of contradicting...
Same would be for incremental backup?

@allquicatic Yeah, I would prefer the actual solution to be on Super User though ;)
Seems to work great btw

@OliverSalzburg uh... it is?
> In short, what you need to do is Update Driver on your Remote NDIS device, then manually pick a driver on your computer, then select the vendor as Microsoft and the driver as "USB RNDIS6".
that's literally the solution, just in short form
it's appalling that this obvious bug has persisted from W7 to W8 to W8.1 to W10 through several build iterations of W10

12:55 PM
9 paragraphs of answer and the actual solution is summarized to one sentence ;P
Connection sharing doesn't work this way still though :(

@OliverSalzburg ICS? works fine here

@Boris_yo sometimes you want free space images for file recovery

@JourneymanGeek But how is there a free space inside incremental and differential data?

there isn't. You're backing up all the things?
then diffing that
or something

@JourneymanGeek There's base backup and all consequent backups are differential backups.

1:06 PM
so base backup is bit for bit, then they store any differences from that?
or something

I know free space is only for backing up entire disk but how can be free space for differential and incremental backups. I mean it's just data.

what does help say?

It does not give explanation for my specific question...
I think it should be disabled for any other backup method than full backup.

@allquicatic I want to share my PC connection with the phone. Doesn't work for me

Bob
@allquicatic Mine Just Works (TM)...
granted, I had to install the modem's drivers
but it was on NDIS 6 last i checked
@allquicatic or it could be using none of those, and a Huawei/ZTE driver instead...

1:15 PM
Tired of Windows... Tired of Androids... Just want Mac and iPhone on steroids.

@Boris_yo So... PC and Android?

There should be no holy war between Windows and Mac lovers. Android and iPhone lovers. It's like clash of people that have different religions. In the end they are just different audiences.
@OliverSalzburg Just something that offers less headache and smooth experience.

@Boris_yo Just install Windows on a Mac
@Boris_yo That would be a TV

You can't do that...

@Boris_yo Its called a book
It never crashes, you can drop it, and you can beat someone with it

1:18 PM
@JourneymanGeek 50 years backward and everyone was reading books.

1:30 PM
@Bob then it wouldn't be an RNDIS device, probably, unless they just ship a custom .inf for cosmetic reasons to say "Huawei Remote NDIS Device" instead of the generic name
(or they ship a custom RNDIS driver specifically in an attempt to un-fuck the rndismpx.sys fuckage)
but there's really no point in shipping a custom RNDIS driver because it's simply a well-defined, serial protocol over the USB bus
no more than an HDD would come with a custom USB Mass Storage driver

@JourneymanGeek ^ Asus
> - Added bluetooth coexistence option in wireless--> professional.
Bluetooth audio transmission(A2DP) near router would interfere 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, enabling bluetooth coexistence can reduce the speed drop.
Known issue: Enabling this option would also reduce 2.4G maximum throughput a little, so the default value is disable.
