Q: GNU/R 'no audio drivers are available'

omicronnsError message as in title shows up in console when trying to execute play() function from audio package. I found plenty of references to this question, but link provided in the answer is dead. How to load a driver into R?

kos
@Seth Yeah that works in Zsh, but apparently not in Bash.

wat
you're right!
forgot my default shell was zsh -.-

6:08 PM
@ByteCommander nice! Any reason you didn't upvote the question?
voting is important people!

kos
@Seth Classic. :D
@terdon Yeah, but I don't understand why it shouldn't interpret it literally. It's also a built-in, shouldn't Bash now that the argument was enclosed in quotes (shouldn't -> rehetorical: does actually Bash just ignore that?)

@kos Quotes don't affect options. Try ls "-l".
A much better question is why in the world does echo "-n " work? That's -n with a space after it.
Ah! Because -n (with the space) is not a valid option, so it's ignored. Just like echo -J or whatever.

seriously though, printf is the right answer here IMO.

True.

kos
@terdon Ok that and some random strace tests enlightened me on why it wouldn't make sense the opposite. :D

6:23 PM
@Seth I didn't? Oh, you're right! Corrected that.
But other than that, I'm one of the most busy voters here on the site... So no need for the second comment, if that was directed at me only. ;-)

user136984
Well, was, not is...

Why are the network interfaces now called enp2s0 instead of eth0? o.O

@intex Woah! Be nice!

@ByteCommander not you only :)
just the people that don't vote. you know who you are ;)

user136984
6:33 PM
@intex: And now you are not following the Ubuntu code of conduct which does state to be nice... ;P

@ParanoidPanda and Humanity

user136984
@intex: Humanity?

user136984
Oh, you mean that they are not following the code of conduct?

user136984
:D

kos
@terdon Maybe I involuntarily started this. Hope @intex didn't mind what I told them yesterday, it was not meant to be offensive, my bad if that came across as such. Simply reading their usual messages and having been the second or third time he had pinged me asking whether I followed the Ubuntu Code of Conduct (and maybe other unrelated things, I can't remember) I felt like asking him if he ever posted something that made sense.

6:37 PM
Come on folks, bounty started askubuntu.com/q/700860/367165

kos
@intex It wasn't meant to be offensive at all though. Possibly I should have used different words, and if you got offended by that then I sincerely apologize. But really, sometimes I don't understand what you mean when you write certain messages, expecially when you write them to me.
@A.B. I'll have to rewrite my half-script before posting it, I'm not too happy with it.

@Terrance yes, apt-install vi

@A.B. o/
@A.B. Definitely vi =)

@Terrance =) \o hey my friend, all servers … =)

6:46 PM
@A.B. Getting there. But it is a never ending cycle. =)

starting a bounty is cruel :\

Q: Low quality edits are being robo-reviewed on Ask Ubuntu

halferI had an edit proposed on one of my questions, and since it did not offer much in the way of improvement, I rejected it. It encouraged me to explore the editor's edit history, where I found a mix of good and bad edits. Sadly a number of the edits that were either of debatable improvement or activ...

So on Saturday night, I was doing some web development and suddenly my audio stopped working, and my computer locked up. I couldn't get it to respond AT ALL. CTRL+ALT+F3 (or other function keys) did nothing. CTRL+ALT+DEL, nothing. I even tried the magic sysreq keystrokes...Nothing.
So I hit the reset button on the front of the computer...
It boots back up no problem, but then my audio in Ubuntu? Gone completely.
I checked if it got muted and the volume...Nope, not muted, volume is fine.

I tried another audio source (Spotify) and nope...Nothing.
So I checked to see if pulseaudio was running. Yep.
pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio -D
...nope, still no sound.

6:54 PM
@quake120 boot from a live CD or into another OS if you have one installed and make sure the audio works there.

pavucontrol ...checked mute there and also the output settings. All are fine. At this point I thought maybe my motherboard had a problem (seeing as it locked up before), so I switched to Windows and the audio worked fine. I booted back over to Linux and did sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio --purge
sudo apt-get remove alsa --purge
Reinstalled both

@quake120 Wait, I have no idea about the sound system of Ubuntu, but as it looks like you're going to dump a long story here into the chat, you should maybe better consider writing a question on the main site first where you can properly collect and format all the information.

Still no audio... So I started poking around with the audio menu on the ubuntu menu and there's another mixer...that is muted
Me: Fffuuuu.... How many audio mixers do you need, Ubuntu?!

Yeah, sounds like a good candidate for a question. Make sure to mention that you've checked and the audio works in a different OS.

That was the end of the story
It works fine now

6:56 PM
Ah, you just needed to vent? I know the feeling :)

It wasn't a question so much as it was a story about a frustrating 45 minutes troubleshooting Linux audio
I mean I tried alsamixer, pavucontrol, the mixer in the system tray area, and the audio settings control panel...ugh. It was some other one that must have gotten installed somehow. Really annoying.

And that's not Ubuntu's fault, really. Much as I enjoy bashing Ubuntu, this one comes from upstream. Audio in Linux is problematic. Or can be.
@quake120 Which one? Do you remember? Was it GUI or commandline? Are you using OSS, or ALSA as well as pulse?

@NathanOsman to answer your question, the backups are just not showing up.. via the web management page or when I SSH there is nothing in the directory (sorry I had to leave abruptly.)

kos
Lol. "The old switcheroo"

I agree...Audio in Linux needs some serious revamping. I was trying to get it to connect nicely to my 7.1 surround sound receiver via SPDIF and I could never get it to work just right.
@terdon It was GUI, and not related to ALSA or pulse because I had checked both of those and neither were muted, so it must have been OSS. I actually had another one called jack for awhile trying to do some kind of audio measurement, so that could be it, too

6:59 PM
Ah, yes. Jack could indeed have been it.

On a positive note, I upgraded my memory:
shaun@shaun-pc:~$ free -g
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 21 8 13
22GB of RAM :D
Now I can run Android Studio and an emulator without constantly having my machine freeze for minutes at a time and my system load numbers going into the 12's

What to do with this very unuseful StarOS answer?

A: UBUNTU 15.10 & UBUNTU 15.10 SERVER QUESTION

Star OSUbuntu Server is for servers, and is not recommended for normal use. It has a terminal interface, probably something noobs should not use. Ubuntu Desktop is for normal use, and noobs can use this like freedom.

well downvote for one.

@Seth And the corresponding question can be closed as dupe.

Q: Possible to update Ubuntu 32-bit to 64-bit?

RichCan I update Ubuntu 15.04x32 to 15.04x64 or must it be a new/clean 64 bit install ?

askubuntu.com/a/125895/367990 is very similar to askubuntu.com/a/31082/367990 - you think there should be done anything? They're over 3.5 years old though. @Seth

@ByteCommander yeah I removed that one. Looks like it was carried over in a merge.

Great, thanks.

user136984
@kos I just hear a very long high-pitch beep that doesn't go away until I kill the process... :D

kos
@ParanoidPanda Lol, sorry :D. It was a random guess.
@ParanoidPanda Apparenty mplayer can do that

7:17 PM
@A.B. Why did you delete your answer? askubuntu.com/a/701662/367990

@ByteCommander Undeleted, because RabbitVCS is in the Universe Repository =)
No need for getdeb

@daBoss I'm a bit busy ATM. Maybe ping me later today?

@A.B. Aha! Why then not editing instead?

@NathanOsman maybe...Just ping me and if I am around I iwll respond

@ByteCommander I was uncertain.

kos
7:20 PM
@ByteCommander To prevent downvotes until he has corrected it I guess. :D

@A.B. No votes left for the new version... :-/

@ByteCommander =)

Should this have been a comment instead of an answer or is it valid enough? askubuntu.com/a/701667/367990

@ByteCommander \me flagged as "No answer"

Hmm... I want some more good questions! Need 31 more points today until 200.

kos
7:28 PM
@ByteCommander I vote no.

If I wouldn't have spent that bounty, I already had reached 200 today.
@kos no to what?

kos
@ByteCommander To "is it valid enough?"

@ByteCommander Your limit today is 180
sorry, 180

Uhm... why?
I'd have thought that if I spend 50 points, I can earn 50 more points.

200 + 2 accepted answer = 230 - 50 for the bounty
=180

7:31 PM
How do you find out the limits?

@ByteCommander do you mean?

kos
@ByteCommander Actually you can profit from other 6 upvotes and from unlimited bounties / acceptances

@ByteCommander no, 180. See here:

Aww.... Then I'd need two more accepted answers. That will be hard!

@ByteCommander Now you have the 180 @A.B. was talking about ! :)

7:35 PM
Yep. 20 more needed :P

@ByteCommander what about three upvotes?

@Zacharee1 Well, if A.B. is right, I can't get any more rep from upvotes today. Only from bounties and accepted answers because of the 200 daily limit.

kos
@A.B. So bounties offered decrease the maximum you can earn?

oh

7:37 PM
@kos Yes :(
-_-

@cl-netbox But I would still 20 more points to count for the LEGENDARY badge, I think.

@ByteCommander What a bad idea ... :D Did you know that @A.B. was the first one who ever received this on AU ?

@A.B. I thought it was:

~~~~~lol~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

@ByteCommander No, if you have reached 200 it counts, also if you offer a bounty after that. But first you have to reach 200

7:39 PM
:D

@Terrance :D
Therefore. 1. Get 200, 2. After that, offer a bounty

@Terrance Great =)

@A.B. Strange, they let you cash bounties received over the threshold, why counting those offered?

lol @Terrance

@kos =)

@A.B. Will remember. :P

@ByteCommander trust me, I have watched this 150 days

kos
Meh. It's beyond me.

@kos btw, where is your script?
=)

kos
7:44 PM
@A.B. I'm not happy with it. I'll post it later or tomorrow, it changes the structure of /etc/apt/sources.list and I don't like that, because I'm not sure if software-properties-gtk then adds up its stuff and messes things.

@kos I think, the structure is like bananas
In German: Das ist Banane

kos
@A.B. The weird thing is that every time i delete /etc/apt/sources.list and re-create the list using software-properties-gtk the list is different (sometimes all components are condensed in a single line, sometimes they're spanned over two, etc)

@kos o_O funny

@Seth User askubuntu.com/users/403746/subhadip-roy recently proposed a great bunch of tag edits where most of them are not really useful (just adding e.g. 14.04 or 15.10 even on not version-specific issues). You want to have a look at him? (and maybe a word)

kos
@A.B. I think it tracks the latest modifications done using it and that this affects the new file. If I can't improve the script I have I think I'll look at the source code of software-properties-gtk and try to create a front-end for to it, maybe it's easier

7:56 PM
@sneetsher come in =)

@A.B. please :)

ok @Sneetsher come in please =) @cl-netbox

@A.B. nice :)

8:12 PM

What are those things called that you plug into power sockets and they give you internet?

Power Line Ethernet or something like that
I know what you are talking about, but I can't remember a brand name or anything

@ParanoidPanda PowerLine adapters.

user136984

@cl-netbox Guten Abend!

Do you use an encrypted profile?

@ParanoidPanda No...

user136984
So you don't have a login password? Or is that not what an encrypted profile is?

user136984
Sorry, just trying to track down a bug...

8:39 PM
@ParanoidPanda No, I don't have a password that I have to type in. I don't know and don't care: I use full HD encryption... >:-)

user136984
Ok :D

user136984
And you haven't noticed your profile picture resetting when you launch qTox?

Mmmh... no again...

user136984
Ok, I think it must just be a bug with encrypted profiles then...

user136984
@Rinzwind: How old were BABYMETAL when they released their first album by the way? :)

16?
2x16 and 1x17 me thinks

user136984
So they would be aged 18 and 19 now as that was in 2014?

user136984
@Rinzwind: Wait, there is mixed information, but wiki says that they would have been around 14 15 then...

user139252
I take it @Terrance does not like nano

8:52 PM
Can anybody spot any vulnerabilities in my usage of Shell-in-a-box on my game/chat site?

@A.B. - my observation was on this one that you forwarded, you didn't correct serer to server, but you still dumped the question on someone else. I didn't correct it either, but I didn't call in reinforcements to answer the question... I was just saying that if you felt like it deserved attention enough that you would specifically bother someone else with the question, that you
would fix the typo in the question title.
I suppose I have a complicated etiquette system. Anyway, no big deal.

A: How to interact with window behind gnome-terminal on shortcut key press?

Jacob VlijmNot literally what you asked for, but if you have a key combination that would automatically recognize both the gnome-terminal -window and the window directly below it, you could switch (toggle) between the two quickly without further effort. The setup does exactly that: If (and only if) either ...

user136984
@Terrance: Do you use Tox by the way? :)

@ParanoidPanda Good answer, but for that workflow, I would consider something more like i3wm. It's not window on window, but it's totally keyboard driven, and I think it would fit how you do things. I just added an extra monitor to do that...
upvoted the answer btw.

9:04 PM
@ParanoidPanda He's going to be happy to hear that! >:-)*

sup @Fabby

@hbdgaf Nothing much: still no signed contract, though another interview lined up...
And doing another product import: I'm actually getting paid to do data cleaning...
:-)

That's nice. I don't have to do the interview thing, they're promoting someone out of my way... I'm still looking for work with animals though. Even retail wasn't simple enough, but I don't need a whole lot. So... still simplifying my life.

And like: real money in my bank account and stuff, no cash-in-hand! :-)
@hbdgaf Please explain "promoting someone out of your way".
sideways promotion for that person?
you being promoted into their position, it being moved elsewhere?
Simple is good... ;-)

Q: Folder Permission on Storage Mounted by User

Count NonaI'm having trouble with an external hdd. Let us say there're two users; user, guest. Let the external storage be called hdde. User has automagically mounted hdde in Ubuntu (for some reason it's /media/user/hdde/ as the mount point) The permissions I assigned as root to /.../hdde: 7644 /media/use...

9:12 PM
I used to know a guy who had a very simple work-life, so he sought to complicate his love-life...
Now that he has a simple love-life, he's moving on in this world! :D

user136984
VTC this question as unclear.

@Fabby No. It's a person that has been company a while and wants to move up. Deserves it. So, promote him up. Bring me in as a temp, then promote me to his position in short order. Keeps people from saying favoritism and gets me in the door. The job keeps me away from people, and just puts a wall of freight in front of me. I'm good at a wall of freight ;)

@hbdgaf Freight or fright??? ;-) :D
(I misread the first "freight" :p)

freight - as in product that needs to be moved, but I suspect you were being facetious/sarcastic.
@ParanoidPanda I don't find that to be unclear. He's asking how to change his wireless regulatory domain.

@hbdgaf Actually for once, I just made a reading error, and thought you would like the laugh too! ;-)

9:16 PM
Hah, yeah. Although I am on anxiety meds now, so it wasn't as funny as it could be.

user136984
@hbdgaf: Does he say that?

Q: Are questions off-topic that are thought not to be but turn out to be?

Paranoid PandaI recently noticed this question Wierd youtube logo today, which clearly has nothing to do with Ubuntu, however if it had turned out to be a virus or something that was specific to Ubuntu or something like that, then it would have been on-topic, but now that we know that it definitely wasn't, do ...

@Terrance nice idea, you're toxing?

@ParanoidPanda It's what he meant. See if he doesn't like the edit.

@ParanoidPanda Sorry, I disagree: I just upvoted... Read here on what they're trying to accomplish
@hbdgaf :D :D :D :D

9:21 PM
@hbdgaf as I said. I have posted the links for Serg to train his package manager skills.

@A.B. I'm not continuing that conversation. I can't make it any clearer what I meant.

@hbdgaf nice. Next time say nothing. That's easier

That I won't do. I feel you were rude or irresponsible in the way you handled it. I'll call it out again if I see it again.

Do what you want @hbdgaf

@ParanoidPanda @A.B. Nope, not using Tox. I need to look into it though.

9:27 PM
@Terrance great :)

user136984
Oh dear, I found the answer almost immediately after I posted the question! :D

@ParanoidPanda I have a funny story involving an infosec professor, the nobody user, and the wall command... The punchline is "Who's logged in as nobody!!!!" in the middle of a preso. Fun times.

:D
My name is nobody...

I log in with schadenfreude@oubliette with a typo, so a dictionary won't find the login... but I digress.

@Fabby you? :D I thought, we are old farts :D

@kos wow great o_O askubuntu.com/a/701718/367165 I have no votes left for today :\

voted to resolve. it's at 2 now, so the system sees it as accepted answer.

kos
@A.B. No worries :)

@kos bookmarked :)

@kos +1 =)

kos
9:47 PM
@hbdgaf At 2 it gets out of the unanswered tab?

@kos I know that when we were doing site cleanup voted at 2 or more took it out of our "unanswered questions" statistic. So, vote to resolve. I don't know if it just ranks them all the way at the bottom of that tab or if they don't even show up any more. Now you know at least as much as I do.

@A.B. I'm one of the Ancient ones...
@A.B. I do!!! ;-) (upgoated) cc: @kos

kos
@hbdgaf Got it, thanks for the free knowledge. Maybe other stuff play a role, this question for example doesn't show up between unanswered anymore.
@Fabby @Terrance Thanks, I think +4 it's totally enough for that answer.

@kos I don't know why that one isn't there, but I would suspect it is because the question is protected.

A few of the deleted answers had upvotes. Negative score but at least 1 upvote cast. That probably is enough to make it count as answered.

10:01 PM
Might be. I looked at that, but none of them crossed 2, so I wasn't sure.

user136984
@Fabby: What is it with all the goats recently? Have I missed something? :D

You have missed the rain dance @ParanoidPanda :)

uh oh

@kos it shows up in unanswered to me.

10:15 PM
Actually, it's the very first post in the unanswered tab if you sort by votes.

yeah, questions -> unanswered uses different filtering.

kos
@Seth @terdon Ah yes. What's the difference between them is beyond me though.

@kos it looks like questions -> unanswered is sorting by "no answer".

Q: How do the various means of finding unanswered questions differ?

Christian RauThere are various ways to find unanswered questions on a site, but all those ways come to totally different results and I'd like to understand why this is. Note that I am very well aware that under some circumstances SE defines "unanswered" as having no upvoted or accepted answers. I'm not here t...

@Seth that was the point in question thanks

@kos @Seth ^^ It has to do with negatively scored posts, I think.

@ParanoidPanda And you allow imgur!? A site where anyone can upload anything?

how do i remove i386 architecture from dpkg ? :(

:25643598 I wish. No, that's PP and his "security concerns". :P

10:52 PM
@terdon: No, it's just that then I won't be able to see anything here if I block imgur too... :P

@terdon He's going to be a great security researcher: he just attracts malware
>:-)
I'm off to bed! Good night everyone!

@GeoMint dpkg --remove-architecture i386.

kos
Night @Fabby o/

@ParanoidPanda I know, it just seems silly to block so may innocuous sites and leave one that is actually inherently dangerous.

user136984
@terdon: Well, I could make it so that I can't see imgur images, however then how would I see anything on this site?

10:55 PM
@terdon i have to delete my vbox. "can not remove non-foreighn architecture" and sudo apt-get update not working :(

@ParanoidPanda No idea, you're the one who wants to block images. I just don't understand how, given your paranoia, you allow a site that lets anyone upload anything anonymously. If a dangerous image is to be found, that's where it'll be.

i hate skype and its i386 arch

@GeoMint No snapshots you can roll back to?
Hang on, that message would suggest you're actually running a 32 bit system. What does uname -a tell you?

@terdon nah... i didn't think i could make such a mistake :(

user136984
@terdon: Ok, well I disabled imgur... Now I can barely see anyone's profile picture... :P

10:56 PM
vivd

@GeoMint Well, if it thinks that i386 isn't a foreign architecture, that would suggest you made it.
I think anyway.

user136984
Except for a few which is strange...

@terdon typo... sorry

@ParanoidPanda Gravatars, probably. And I wasn't trying to get you to block that too. I was trying to point out that you're being paranoid.

@terdon sudo apt-get update is not working so i will do a clean install of 15.10 tomorrow
they can not even make a usefull app in microsoft :(
skype takes 200MB ram even in windows computers just excisting

10:59 PM
Yup. I remember when skype was excellent. Before it was bought by Microsoft. Light and a native Linux client and everything. Sigh.

user136984
@terdon: So you thought you'd increase my levels of paranoia? :P

@terdon BEFORE

user136984
@Fabby: Goodnight! :)

user136984
Anyway, goodnight guys! :)

@ParanoidPanda No, I was hoping you would realize that it's unhealthy, counter productive, basically wrong and ultimately pointless.

user136984
11:00 PM
Hope the beds don't bite!

@ParanoidPanda goodnight

user136984
Or I think it was something like that... :D

Might have been some bugs in there too :)

kos
Night @ParanoidPanda! Tomorrow you'll tell me exactly what happened for you to be demoted from "Toroidal" to a way more mild (paranoid) panda. :D

I wouldn't try beating your bed with a shoe until it's black and blue, for example.
@kos He decided to own his paranoia. Sadly, his paranoia also decided to own him.

kos
11:02 PM
Makes sense. :D

11:19 PM
ah man some steam machines were like $200 off and I missed it, all sold out
wow, the zotac ones are sold out too

wow

@Fabby Wait...I started it? o_O
I'm pretty sure that was a thing before I changed my avatar
Anyone here good with regex?
I need to figure out a way to check for markdown & swap it out for HTML

user139252
I cannot sudo su into nobody D=

wat

kos
@RPiAwesomeness What do you want to do exactly?

11:34 PM
@kos I need to find a way to take markdown (* WORDS * for italics, ** bold **, etc.) and convert them to their HTML counterparts

kos
How about this? manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man1/markdown.1.html, maybe it's more pratical than building your own engine.

But it has to be done in Javascript

kos
Looks like an extensive task, are you sure there are no APIs / frameworks in JS to do that already?

Probably are, I'm looking into that now
