3:00 AM
@Seth oh, carrier mobility is a key aspect of long term mobile policy here
@Zacharee1 go talk to bob on root access, he has a G2

@JourneymanGeek I also have a G2. Very different from the G4

Bob
I have a G4 :P
Never used a G2. Came from a Galaxy S4.
H815 EU and recently SEA have official bootloader unlocks.
Mine is TWN, no unlock yet but there is root on Lollipop
@JourneymanGeek no idea where you got G2 from o.O

3:18 AM
liking the G4 then @Bob?

My old lappie doesnt take GNOME even with 6 GB ram ._.
It's frustrating

Bob
@Seth yup. It's been smooth for me so far

@Bob That's nice!
@Serg your lappie knows better than you :P
@Bob I can't remember, but was the G4 one of the phones that can shoot in RAW?

Bob
Yep.

Nice!

3:24 AM
@Seth eh . . . . i guess my hardware is just a bit dated . . . .At least openbox works

openbox ftw \o/

Bob
IIRC some 20 MB + 10 MB JPEG. It eats thorough storage, so yay for SD support

@Bob It's worth it though.

1 hour ago, by Zacharee1
So what do you guys think about the LG G4?

3:38 AM
Also I mistyped G2, when I meant g4 ;p

@JourneymanGeek ah
I'm looking at the G4 because it seems like a viable replacement for the Note 4
Sprint wants us to send our phones in if we switch to their 50% off plan and Samsung has forced the Note 4 from production

Bob
@Zacharee1 Depends what you're looking for, I guess.
I'm happy with mine, but I've never used a Note 4 either.

Camera, speed, updates mainly

Bob
There's already lots of general reviews out there, but I'm happy to answer specific questions.

Fingerprint reader is nice, but not enough to go to the Note 5
How nice is the camera in actuality?

Bob
3:41 AM
@Zacharee1 Updates - pretty good. My phone shipped with the Stagefright fixes two months ago and got the second set of fixes just a few weeks after they came out.

Oh, that's good. Note 4 still hasn't fixed the second on VZW

Bob
Marshmallow is already out in some regions but I won't be upgrading until someone figures out root.

Kingroot?
But OK

Bob
@Zacharee1 Ah... I'm running the H815 TWN variant. If you're on VZW that could be different.
Carrier variants tend to have even more delays on top.

@Bob Sprint most likely soon
Sprint's been timely

Bob
3:43 AM
@Zacharee1 Sprint pre-Sept batch had a recall too, but new ones should be fine.

Hmm

Bob
@Zacharee1 SuperSU. It's possible to take an image of the system partition, load SuperSU onto it, and dd it back on.
But apparently Marshmallow root basically requires an unlocked bootloader, so... :\

Well, I don't have to have root right away, but if it can come within a few months, that'll be good for me

Bob
@Zacharee1 Speed - some people say the UI is a bit laggy. Personally, I haven't experienced any issues at all.

ok
Too much lag on N4

Bob
3:44 AM
Snapdragon 808 is a bit weaker than the competitors, but it's fine for my usage (mostly web. I don't do much phone gaming)

Neither do I, good

Bob
Coming from Samsung, I like the quick access toggles. Much prefer it over the way vanilla Android does it, though that might just be familiarity. The notification area is a bit annoying, though, because there isn't as much space there by default (but you can hide the brightness and volume sliders to get more)

OK
So far nothing gamebreaking

Bob
@Zacharee1 Camera... hm.
It's great in low light. Manual is brilliant there.

Oh, that's good

Bob
3:47 AM
I don't know how it compares to the Note 4, but it's far better than the S4 (S4 used contrast autofocus)
G4's laser autofocus is much faster, and seems more accurate. Note 4 apparently uses phase detection, which should be comparable.

The Note 4 has ƒ2.2, G4 has ƒ1.8, so I think it's better quality

Bob
The OIS is great for photography, but not that good for video if you move around.
If you stay still, it helps. If you move, it causes a bit of jerkiness.

Don't do video
So this is great so far :D

Bob
When it comes to daylight photography... hard to say if it's really better than, say, the S6.
Apparently HDR is a bit iffy.

No way am I getting the S6

Bob
3:48 AM
Manual mode (w/ manual focus) is good for macro shots though.

Don't really like HDR
Good

Bob
Some people have taken some beautiful macro shots with an extra lens from a Google Cardboard kit :P

Hmm, how about battery life (if you have more about the camera, please continue)?

@Zacharee1 o/

@Ravan \o

Bob
3:50 AM
@Zacharee1 Unfortunately, I haven't had many opportunities to really make use of the camera, and don't actually own another recent flagship to compare to.

That's fine

Bob
Tested it out a bit around the house when I got it.
A couple photos here and there.

The RAW format is a real incentive for me

Bob
@Zacharee1 Battery life - pretty good on standby. Not so good with the screen on.
I think I average around 4 hours SOT while web browsing, auto brightness.
Obviously lasts longer on minimum brightness.

hmm
Yeah

Bob
3:51 AM
Some people have managed to get 7 hours SOT somehow :S

That's a little discouraging

Bob
Others are down to 3 hours.

That's pretty low

Bob
I'm currently split at 50% screen / 50% app usage.

does it have a removable battery or support turbo charge? or even wireless charging?

Bob
3:53 AM
So if your browser is more lightweight I could see you getting 5-6 hours.
@Seth Removable, yes. Supports QC2.0. No wireless by default (without special back cover).

OK, that's not good

Bob
Standby time is good though.

The Bengals just went for it on 4th down and made it. :D They're behind. (I have nothing of value to contribute.)

Bob
Overnight it might drop by 2-3%.

Oh, wow

3:54 AM
@Bob well the first two are good enough. These days removable battery is a huge plus.

That's good
I'm not used to having the screen take up so much battery, thanks to OLED

Bob
@Seth Depends if you make use of it. I use a portable battery pack anyway.
@Zacharee1 IME with the S4, OLED actually takes up far more.
But that was a Snapdragon 600, and app battery usage was considerably lower.

So, a review site says 10 hours video

Bob
And apparently OLED has gotten better recently.

@Bob just being able to replace it when it starts to get bad is nice.

3:55 AM
@Bob around 3% at most

Bob
@Zacharee1 I wouldn't be surprised. See above re: apps (especially browser) taking 50%.

Although with 5.0.1, that's more like 20%
Hmm

Bob
@Zacharee1 I'm guessing brightness matters a lot there.
OLED was great at lowest brightness but power usage was crazy at high/highest.

Well, the good thing about OLED is black pixels have no power at all

@KGIII ooh, vs Cards eh? That will be some game.
I don't really like either team though.

Bob
3:57 AM
@Zacharee1 Oh, the biggest issue I've had so far, which might be a gamebreaker: charging while screen is on sucks
I swear they miscalibrated something

yeesh
Even with the fast charger?

Bob
Charge rates of 2A with screen off, 300mA with screen on.
My S4 did 2A screen off, 1200mA screen on.
Now, the screen itself doesn't use nearly that much, so I'm pretty sure it's some calibration issue and not actual power usage from having the screen on.

Hmm. Maybe those recalled phones were the ones with the problem :p

Bob
But no fixes yet and I'm not sure if a software fix is even possible.
@Zacharee1 Nah, that was a bootloop (or maybe screen failure) problem, apparently.

urgh, decisions

Bob
3:59 AM
Mine is a Sept one anyway. Should have been after the recall. And the recall was apparently Sprint-only for some reason.

weird

Bob
All said, I'm happy with the phone. Battery life could be better, and charging is a disappointment. But I'm otherwise happy.
Especially since it cost about half as much as an S6 :S

Yeah
Having SD card support and a removable battery are musts

Bob
I wonder if they fixed charging on the V10.
@Zacharee1 I like the sound of removable battery, despite rarely making use of it.
SD support is a must for me, though.
Some $30 for a 64 GB micro SD card. Easy to swap out, and triples the storage.

Yep
That's why I like it

4:03 AM
@Seth It's not a bad game at all. Looks like the Cards are going to win but I can't call it just yet.
The TV has too many channels and I've not figured out how to use the search feature. I do, on the other hand, know how to use Google. :D

haha, nice!

The home page has the current games and the next games, seems to be pretty up-to-date. ;-)

@Bob From what I'm seeing on forums, battery life is hit-and-miss. Some people use it normally and experience a drop to 82%. Others had to return it because it would drain 10% in less than an hour without much usage
@Bob it seems to be the Lollipop update: like with the Note 4 and S5, some people are fine and others die

I wanted to add something to my script on A.B.'s answer and I forgot what
aarg

stuped spem

4:10 AM
argv

@Serg did it happen to be about the Best Skin Gel for Wrinkles Today?

Bob
@Zacharee1 I wonder if they measured what was actually causing the usage.
I have some 10-20% taken by Onavo, which is ridiculous. On the verge of removing it now.

Nope, but there seem to be just as many horror stories as people saying their battery lasts amazingly
What's that?

Bob
@Zacharee1 Data usage monitor.
Was using it on the S4 without any issues.

huh

Bob
4:13 AM
@Zacharee1 Would depend on what apps they use and their usage patterns, I guess.
Oh, I'm not on LTE either. That would probably make it a bit worse.
And even something as simple as poor coverage could cause a fair bit of extra battery usage (phones in general).
So... really depends :\

@Zacharee1 I doubt A.B. needs it . . . but that would be a nice addition

Well, the good thing about Sprint is that I actually get coverage in the three locations I need it. VZW has coverage in one
@Serg ;P

How can I simulate window not responding ?

@Serg Actually crash the app? :p

Em . . . @Zacharee1 how . . .
I don't crash stuff on purpose . . . .usually

4:18 AM
'Snot a bad game.

@Serg Smash dat keyboard!
Seriously, though, hitting your hands down on the keyboard can freeze a lot

O_O I think that breaks keyboard, not the app itself

Just don't hit ALT+F4 or CTRL+Q
@Serg just press your palms down then
@Bob Lollipop is definitely the problem for the battery issues

@Zacharee1 didnt work

:p

Bob
4:21 AM
@Zacharee1 Odd.
Too bad I'm basically stuck here until someone figures out root for Marshmallow.

I guess the issues aren't exclusive to Samsung

Bob
Or LG allows unlocking on TWN.

You can unlock the H815's (or whatever) bootloader officially
Don't you have the EU variant?

Bob
@Zacharee1 Only H815 EU or (recently) SEA.
H815 TWN is still locked.

oh
Is root so valuable that you give up the Doze feature just for it?

Bob
4:25 AM
@Zacharee1 Yep.
Most of my usage is with screen on anyway.

ah, oh well

Bob
And I rely heavily on Titanium Backup.

Well, that could be a factor :p
It's a little weird that they don't have OLED though. The battery could be amazing if the G4 had it
Can we all have a round of applause for how bad that sentence syntax was?
uh oh
Spam wave incoming

Bob
@Zacharee1 I actually find LCD far more readable in direct sunlight.

@Bob Interesting. Is Samsung's high contrast mode exclusive maybe? (Not sarcastic, just bad structure)

Bob
4:32 AM
@Zacharee1 Well, I was comparing with the S4.
OLED probably got better in recent years.

possibly

@Seth You watching this?

4:45 AM
Heh. That was an excellent game, actually. :D

@KGIII no, have other things to do :/
wow, that ending though (just looked it up).

@Seth That sucks. :P I didn't so I enjoyed it for you. It was tied, AZ had 21 unanswered points, then CINN caught up, and then AZ won with a field goal instead of it going into OT.
I'd forgotten why I used to watch football once in a while. Then I watched a game on lark the other day and, well, now I watched a few more today. :/

1 hour later…
6:02 AM
OK, my brain is fried enough
I need to step out
One of those questions to which i cannot figure out a solution
wheres everybody ? theres spam wave

6:53 AM
Can we please close How do I change the desktop background from command line? as duplicate of How to change desktop background from command line in Unity? The first one gives a bit dated information, as mentioned in @oli's answer, so it may well be useful to redirect users to more updated info

GIMP turned 20 on the 21st of this month.

@Serg which dependency error?

@A.B. the unmet dependency . . . .In other words, how can i break my apt ?

7:08 AM
@Serg you want to break it?

@A.B. yes, for learning purpose . . . .I wanna learn solving that stuff

Might I suggest doing so in a VM @Serg?

It's a little bit hard. Remove the main repository from your sources.list and try to install a package with a dependency which is available in main @Serg

@KGIII Yeah, that's a consideration . . . Oh by the way, I've found a way to start X server only for virtualbox, so . . . .i think im going to try to run only in VM some time

That's a simple problem
Better are the i386 libraries
They need alleyways exact the same version as the 64-bit packages
As you can read in my latest answer
Also not bad, a problem during the start of a server in the installation process askubuntu.com/a/701124/367165
And therefore I think, this answer is bad askubuntu.com/a/701304/367165

7:16 AM
That should be fun @Serg. :D I am going to delve back into scripting. I used to know a fair bit of bash and Perl. I'm thinking about picking up Python. I'll probably buy a book at my next destination and have it shipped there.

@KGIII May I suggest learnpythonthehardway.org

We've been talking about going to Florida but stopping in DC. SWMBO is also talking about staying here until Friday now. That way she's able to spend Thanksgiving here with her family. I am so sick of Buffalo.

Because software and "sometimes" is simply stupid. All problems have a reason
2

You may, indeed, suggest such and it will be dutifully bookmarked, perused, and considered as a learning tool and I shall be grateful for the inclusion. :D Thanks.

I used his other web-book on C programming . . . though didn't complete it

7:18 AM
There is only True or False. I never heard of Perhaps.

Hmm... I'll buy a copy I suppose.

@Serg also not bad, install a server and check the pre-removal scripts. Delete or break something, which is needed in the pre-removal script.
@Serg or change the dependencies in a deb package, so it can be installed

@A.B. where those scripts would be located ?

/var/lib/dpkg/info

7:24 AM
Ugly Firefox icon appears in my Unity launcher. This happens few seconds after login. Anything I can do about it?

A problem in this scripts breaks the package system @Serg
@Serg found the folder.?

@A.B. yeah, i know this one, i use it frequently for the .list files

Ah . . . some of those scripts have update-alternatives command . . . .I see how it is

I'll probably order a half dozen of 'em. So far, I'm up to three.

7:30 AM
@Serg have fun askubuntu.com/…

(If anyone has feedback on these that'd be awesome!) :D

148 , nice . . . .@KGIII you might ask @ByteCommander and @NathanOsman for suggestions . Those guys know of python just a tiny bit more, so they can provide review on those materials

Alrighty. I'll make a list and try to remember to ask. I'll just make a "wish list" and store them in there.
The last two (and the one you recommended) look very nice.
I'm also pretty fond of Wiley and O'Reilly. I've had good luck with them both before.

OK, let me check my sanity . . . .It's 12:33 AM, I've a translation from chinese to english due at 6 AM . . . .it's not done yet . . . . Yep, just a typical day of my life
@KGIII since I've included the @ symbol, they've been pinged, so they'll see and give some suggestions

They tend to have good authors. I don't know of any of these authors but Lutz seems to have a good reputation and I think I might have read a book from him in the past??? I'm not certain though.
That'll be awesome. :D Hopefully... Are you familiar with any other sources? I should brush up on Perl too but I've scads of material for that at home.

7:36 AM
@Serg this one is also nice. Problem with architectures and packages askubuntu.com/a/700293/367165

I probably should brush up on C and C++ while I am at it.

@A.B. Ive read that one just now. So there were two nemo-datas from two different repos, right ? And one repo had higher priority than other
@KGIII I will be brushing up my C,too, since next semester I am taking interface techniques class ( all about microcontrollers )
and not only that

I think I'm going to order the Python Cookbook in eBook format and the Python Testing Cookbook.
Those I'll get in eBook format and I'll get a copy of the one you recommended. I'll start there. That leaves my space open for three more selections. I figure a half dozen should be a good start as I have none in my library at home.
Heh... The Python Cookbook is huge. It's nearing 800 pages. That should be fun. :D
Have you got Tox @Serg?

@KGIII qtox , yessir
IT's in my 15.10 vm
also, I don't know how to use SHIFT key correctly

Voila. that icon comes from ~/.thunderbird/yprpxtt3.default/extensions/.../chrome/skin/icons/linux/hicolor/2‌2x22/apps/firefox.png

7:42 AM
Well. . . the OP bailed on me. . . askubuntu.com/q/699915/295286 Should I still post the script ?

Of course @Serg. Did you catch the code for my Tox?

@KGIII hold on, i didn't . . .I will post mine in a minute

Alrighty.

balls . . .cannot start VM
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu 15.10.

The virtual machine 'Ubuntu 15.10' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

LOL
Well, lemme know when you can. I'm almost done doing what I'm doing. :D

7:47 AM
Qt WARNING: VirtualBox: cannot connect to X server :0
are you fsckin kidding me

@Serg priorities are fun, too.

No Tox (or qTox) for OS X? :/

The problem, apt-get can't automatic downgrade. With aptitude, that's not a problem

@KGIII Started VM with sudo startx virtualbox from tty1, that's probably why it breaks . . . now i have to use it through sudo startx again
So . . .once i connect from there, i'll let you know

LOL Alrighty. I'll be around for a while yet. I've got to be awake tomorrow in the mid-morning but that's it. I'm not in a huge rush. I've got a gift for ya.

7:59 AM
@KGIII a gift ? That's exciting. I'm in VM by teh way. Hella slow , but at least it works

Gift(s) perhaps. ;-)

@KGIII ready ?

Should be good to delete it. (Anyone else that witnessed mine can go ahead and add me, it's all good.)

Good morning/day/evening/night everybody :)

@Takkat hello there, how are you doing ?

8:07 AM
relative to being a Monday morning quite well.

hi o/
why ubuntu is not detecting windows 8 partition while update-grub?

My SSH issue turned out to be a rtl8821ae driver issue... why always that incompatible hardwares :"(
may be hibernated, fast-boot, encrypted?

no, I have disabled it
not encrypted

@KGIII sorry , my vm is glitching out . . . I'll have to come back to it next time

LOL It's all good. I suppose I could just set up a second room here but those should keep you busy for a while. Are you a comp-sci major?

8:16 AM
@KGIII minor
EET major

You'd probably really really like Foundations of Programming Languages by Kent Lee.

._. eh . . . .this was kind of a timely event that my laptop desided to break down . . . at least the black friday is around the corner

@edwardtorvalds is it a "dynamic" disk?

@KGIII never read that one . . .

Oh wow. Hmm... Lemme find a link.

8:20 AM
Hmmmm, seems interesting . . . It's C++,too . . .

I understand that it is now course material for a number of classes. It's a bit deeper than the description gives it credit for.

hg8
Good morning =)
monday morning

Lemme know when you've got your VM up and running again and I'll loan you a copy. Actually, I can delete my copy and you can have it. Err... I'm not sure that's exactly legal but I don't think anyone will complain?
G'morning @hg8.

@KGIII Not necessary, i can get my own with the subscription to the databases my university has
particularly . . . springer

Nice!

8:23 AM
Well, i really should go

We didn't have stuff like that when I was in school.
We didn't really have ebooks. :D

@HeatherBrown They're the spawn of the devil! Sorry, no clue what you're talking about)

We did have text manuals and we could go on the network and read/save text. :D
No ebooks though.
Hey @Fabby! Gimme a minute and I'll be right back. Need a drink.

ebooks can get to the level of absurd . . .a guy in my java class was reading his ebook on android . . . and it was fairly small screen too

Cool!

8:32 AM
@Fabby o/ =)
Morning @ByteCommander

LOL @Serg They are nice but they probably aren't the best thing for every situation. I like them in conjunction with a dead tree version.

> "Several months ago, after years of waiting and missed deadlines, I had finally managed to lay my hands on an Ubuntu-powered phone, a BQ Aquaris E4.5. I was so jubilant, and my expectations were so very high that when I finally got to test the device, the end result wasn't so spectacular. For near six months, the little phone was relegated to collecting dust." - Dedoimedo, Ubuntu Phone is getting better

@A.B. Hello! :-)

HA ! .Xauthority was chowned by root , I solved my virtualbox problem
Maybe i should ask a question and post an answer to it

@KGIII There's a ping from @Serg about Python in my notifications inbox - what's up?

8:37 AM
@ByteCommander - I am going to delve into scripting again and I'm going to learn Python, or at least try. For scripting languages, I'm familiar with Perl, PHP, and some JavaScript and bash. I'm horrifically out of practice with all of them and wanting to know if you have any book recommendations concerning Python learning resources?
Heh... I was already typing. :D

@Serg About .Xauthority? better not. It would be a duplicate.

You need English ones, I assume? There would be a good fat German one on my shelf, but I'm not sure if it has any translations...

I'm really needing English more than any other language. I do speak a little of a few languages but I'm really only fluent in English.

@A.B. no, .Xauthority was a solution. I ran virtualbox from tty1 with sudo startx virtualbox, that made .Xauthority to be chowned . . . i figured it out only 20 minutes after
nicotine break

8:39 AM
@KGIII This online Tutorial was my first start with Python. It#s available in German and English, and it's free!

Also, my friend who is into vaping, said some people start out with vapes that have 25 mg of nicotine . . . why ? Because in the US the cigarettes don't have nicotine and tar rating like they do in Russia or China

Thanks! I'll bookmark it and take a gander at it in detail later today or when I'm a wee less busy. @ByteCommander.

So those people don't know their rating when they start

That does look interesting. @ByteCommander I don't mind paying. I've picked out three books, so far, and I'll probably buy three more as I don't have any Python books at home. At least none that I know of.

8:45 AM
@A.B. You never heard of Heisenbugs? Sometimes you can even get "soft-bugs" (not sure about the term, I've heard it a while ago). Those are caused by e.g. quantum fluctuations or cosmic radiation that randomly flips a bit in memory or CPU cache...
@KGIII I borrow most programming books from the library currently.

@ByteCommander =)

But those are all German, so not very helpful for you...

No, probably not too helpful. If they've got translations than that might work.

Q: How to improve HDD clicking on ASUS X550Z?

R SMy HDD is new. HDD always issues clicking sound, even in idle. I tried sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda and sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda - did not help. This sound appears under Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu Mate 15.04, Xubuntu 14.04 and 15.04, but with KDE distros (Kubuntu 15.04, Fedora 23, openSUSE) it seems...

I linked to a few of them.

8:49 AM
WTF =) askubuntu.com/q/701368/367165 apps have dependencies?! WHY?! o_O
LOOOL

I bought the ebooks Python Cookbook and Python Testing Cookbook and now the Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner and Professional.

@A.B. everything these days have dependencies , even smarts
apt-cache depends smarts
Depends: brain

@ByteCommander your comment =) Yes, very strange =) LOL

OK, Away from chat, ping me if there's anything important

> but be in mind. Also this game have dependencies
There are some grammar mistakes in that...

8:56 AM
@ByteCommander I know, my grammar is a disaster
sudo apt-get install grammar

(e.g. what do you want to say by "but be in mind"?)

Denke daran
@Serg how can I install the grammar package in my brain?

away from chat, ping me if anything important comes up
@A.B. you need libgrammar-2015
optional dependencies are language-practice-2.5 , language-books-3.5, language-partners4.5
