:D . . . .
xieerqi:$ apt-cache search grammar | grep -c grammar

^ I actually just searched that

@ByteCommander you need aptitude search '~dtetris'
@Serg Indeed, 24 o_O

That's it ! I'm getting myself new laptop, working on my old lappie is pain in the lower part of the body

Now that's weird: I was setting up two identical boxes (Asrock BeeBox) with identical hardware. Installed 15.10 from same USB to both. The wireless (rtl8821ae) works fine on one box, but I can't get it to work on the other box.

@Takkat Sure it is not broken?

% aptitude search '~dgrammar' | grep -c 'grammar'
27

9:03 AM
It sees my WLAN, connects to it but fails to transmit data.
I read the realtek has issues with Linux 4.x

@A.B. Should I add sample run to that source enabling script ? I added the paste bin, but that is a draft run

@ByteCommander for me, assuming broken hardware usually is the last resort in debugging.. but I admit I already ordered an Intel replacement Wifi-card.

@Serg Yes, why not. Examples are always great to understand.
Bounty starts in eight hours =) askubuntu.com/q/700860/367165

Did anybody (probably only Germans) watch the @Rinzwind movie on TV last Saturday? ;-D

9:08 AM
You mean doctor who ? I'm apathetic to that, since i dont watch tv
is there any better translation service than google translate ?

I mean Terry Pratchett's "The Colour of Magic" - the movie about the first part of the discworld stories. The protagonist is the wizard Rincewind.

That's a pretty good movie. I like the book better but they did well with the movie.

Did not read the book, but played the first scene of the computer game!

They did an EXCELLENT job with Hogfather. It's absolutely fantastic.

I have this one from '96 laying around on some old backup: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld_%28video_game%29

9:13 AM
@ByteCommander great explanation:_ askubuntu.com/a/700354/367165

@A.B. Thanks. I felt the need to add the id command.

I've never played it @ByteCommander. I've read about it here and there. I was never a huge gamer to begin with but I liked the Fallout series, one and two until I played Fallout Tactics. I've not gamed since then. Tactics ruined the series for me.

:D And I even failed to leave the first scene of the Discworld game!
But to defend myself, I have to say that I was maybe 10 when I touched that game the last time... And it was in English.
I should probably try it again.

@ByteCommander OP's main problem was that they didn't know that root account in ubuntu is disabled by default but sudo is admin privillege . . .Good explanation, upgoated

Thanks!

9:23 AM
@ByteCommander are you going to post anything for A.B.'s sources question ?
I need competition

Dunno... Maybe later this afternoon. I did not really look at the question yet and research what to do.
But well, I can just check out your script and cheat a bit! ;-)
Anyway, if I write something, it's going to be Python.
afk for 0.5-1h...

@ByteCommander basically, if you look at the GUI, there's 4 sources security , updates, backports, and proposed. Enabling-disabling them in GUI makes the lines to be inserted/deleted form /etc/apt/sources.list A.B. wants that, but through command line
The GUI has python backends already, i can tell you that . . .Perhaps you will be petter at interpreting those scripts that me

9:45 AM
@Neil ok, the link is invalid, but its a good answer =) askubuntu.com/a/692901/367165
@Neil you should learn some awk-magic to remove the block with one command =) Ask @Serg =)
@Neil something like awk '/Package: python-leap-common/,/^$/' /var/lib/dpkg/status

xieerqi:$ grep 'psensor' /var/lib/dpkg/status
Package: psensor
Depends: psensor-common (= 0.8.0.3-1ubuntu3), gconf2 (>= 2.28.1-2), gconf-service, libappindicator3-1 (>= 0.2.92), libatasmart4 (>= 0.13), libc6 (>= 2.14), libcairo2 (>= 1.2.4), libcurl3-gnutls (>= 7.16.2), libgconf-2-4 (>= 2.31.1), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.31.8), libgtk-3-0 (>= 3.3.16), libgtop2-7 (>= 2.22.3), libjson-c2 (>= 0.10), libnotify4 (>= 0.7.0), libsensors4 (>= 1:3.0.0), libunity9 (>= 3.4.6), libx11-6 (>= 2:1.4.99.1), libxext6
 /etc/xdg/autostart/psensor.desktop 0b4bc9d27aeaddd3b47577e11777b668

@hg8 he, I can read you, you're online =)
@Serg awk-magic? =)

hg8
@A.B. Hello my friend :)

smoking break

@Neil @A.B. there you go, the command is awk '/^Package: python-leap-common/,/^$/ {$0=""}1' /var/lib/dpkg/status > /tmp/status It errases everything from line matching Package: python-leap-common to the first blank line. The 1 at the end is evaluated as true always, so it prints the output > redirects to /tmp/status file . . . .Finally mv /tmp/status /var/lib/dpkg/status to replace the original file.
And yes, it's AWK magic . . . software is magic

Q: What takes so long to respond?

BorWalOn other sites on Stack Exchange, I have received quick responses for most of my questions - by quick, I mean within a 24-hour period. I have asked three questions in Ask Ubuntu, and each one of them has lasted over a week without a single comment, much less an answer. Forgive me for sounding im...

Good morning / day / evening / night ... :)

@cl-netbox o/

@Serg Hello my friend ! :)

Hmm... I wonder what patter the first one matched to make it ring up as spam? It doesn't appear to be spam? I'm not sure who downvoted it.

kos
Morning @all!

10:07 AM
Ah - I see now, someone left a comment at the first one. There was a link in it. :D

kos
@A.B. Are you still putting a bounty on your question? :D

@KGIII yup, a link in a single letter

Jerks. :/

spammers stop at nothing to get traffic to their website, although . . . this is not a good method . . .it took me a minute to figure out where the link was

When I am Supreme Ruler of the Galaxy, I'm going to mandate that such people be publicly flogged.
I think it was gone by the time I opened it the first time.

FRENCH SPAM! :O

Oui!

We have a real spam wave today... :P

Yeah . . . spammers noticed earlier there was no one around apparently, cuz chat was empty

Sacre blue! Or whatever - I can't spell or speak French. I can kind of, sort of, speak Canadian French because I live on the border, pretty much, and I've learned to speak quite a bit of it but I surely can't spell any of it - except for 'Oui!' I only know that one because it's "OUI" like "Operating Under the Influence."

Oh, and "Merci!"
Boucoup maybe? Hmm... No, not a French speaker. :D

@kos Sure, in 6 hours =)

Ah and 'bier' 'cause I used to drink a lot of Canadian beer.

@hg8 @Serg Hello :)

@kos are you going to make me a competition ? :D

kos
@Serg Sure I will. :D

Yaaaay
My answer ain't gonna be the only lonely one there
@kos ping me once you post
I kind of think I've overdone my script :/ so much error checking . . .
Eh . . . .typical . . . .
But for a complete application , I guess that's just about right

10:33 AM
Hi!

@berserk o / hellow

\0 Hi Serg :)
I am just new to ubuntu :3

@berserk You are the most gory anime/manga I have watched/read!

:P I just wrote an answer but the post got first closed and then owner-deleted just half a minute before I was going to hit the "Post answer button"...

@berserk Welcome to Ubuntu.

10:38 AM
@berserk welcome to the Ubuntu family

@blade19899 haha, but it is awesome :D
Thanks @KGIII @Serg :)

Ask a similar question and answer it yourself @ByteCommander! Might as well keep the energy invested and not lose it.
@berserk Are you new to Linux or are you just new to Ubuntu?

@berserk I'm Serg, been using ubuntu for around two years . . .loving it ! Haven't gone back to my windows 7 in a while . . .

New to linux.

No, it was really rather off-topic or unclear... I just thought why closing it if it can be answered in a few paragraphs anyway.

10:40 AM
@Serg wow cool.. ubuntu is a lot faster than windows
And I guess it has a lot to learn for development and stuff.

The most important thing, that I can think of @berserk, is just to keep in mind that you decided to use Linux because you wanted something different - and it is different. It's a learning curve but worth it. It's a whole different mindset than what you're probably used to and you'll find the differences in time and, hopefully, appreciate the differences.

@Serg That sounds like if you would introduce yourself to a self-help group - the Anonymous Ubunteros! :D

@ByteCommander You literally made me spit from laughing just now

I know! :)

I think I first picked up Linux in the mid 1990s but didn't really stick with it. I've used it, off and on, since then. I bought a copy of RedHat (before it went all enterprise only) and then a copy of Slackware not long after. I'd generally kept it installed on a second drive or second partition but did not make use of it nearly enough.

10:42 AM
Ewww... The drops just appeared on my screen. :P ;)

@berserk ah, well, Ubuntu is probably the easiest to start with . . . Yes, it's a good platfom for coding and such . . .I'm personally planning to get myself Raspberry Pi and start some projects with there Ubuntu . . .

@KGIII yes, I am looking forward to learn a lot here. Also, I wanna learn the command line. kinda tired of GUIs :p
@blade19899 Gatts :3

I love command line, personally

@berserk To be honest, there's benefits to both. If you don't believe me, install Lynx and browse the web using nothing but Lynx for a week. :D

@Serg I just heard of ubuntu, fedora, red hat, and mint.

10:43 AM
When at work I have to use Win7 , I feel uneasy without a terminal window open . . .so I have cygwin on my usb stick

@berserk distrowatch.com for a whole bunch more.

@berserk fedora and red hat are cousins, just like ubuntu and mint, though ubuntu and mint are distant, and askubuntu doesn't support mint questions
Deepin has the GUI that i am in love with
so pretteh
Ubuntu is my favorite, since that's where i started/

@KGIII Is it a browser? Sorry for lack of my knowledge.

That question is really confusing to me - anyone understands what he wants in that example? askubuntu.com/q/701456/367990

Ubuntu is a fork of Debian. Well, I'm not sure how much code they still share. I imagine they're pretty disparate.

kos
10:45 AM
@Serg Sure. I'll review your script by then also

@berserk Yes, it's a browser that runs entirely in the terminal and is entirely text based.

@berserk Yes. A terminal browser.

@KGIII thanks, is that some tutorials?

@berserk No, a ranking/listing of a bunch of Linux flavors.

@Serg oh. My brother used red hat. He said it provides good tools for hacking or stuff. Many people asked me to use Mint.
wow a terminal browser?
I mean that will be hard to use.

10:47 AM
You can search, poke, prod, and test a bunch by going there and seeing what suits your needs best. For now? I highly recommend just sticking with Ubuntu or one of the official Ubuntu flavors. The ecosystem is huge, the community is huge, and it's a nice place to get started.

@ByteCommander i think OP wants to merge two files . . .
or process one file based on another

But I don't understand the system or algorithm he wants to apply...

ok, gonna ubuntu for now :D
I guess ubuntu is the most popular linux OS.

@berserk No, not really. Open the terminal with CTRL ALT T and then type sudo apt-get install lynx and it should install and then you can start it by typing lynx in the terminal.

@berserk It is, at least for home desktops.

10:48 AM
OK, i need a smoke and then i need to finish the damn translation
i am so stupid that i didnt start it earlier, now i am about to have a headache and it's almost 4 am

Let's just say that it's not really very feature rich. ;-) It is, however, a good demonstration of why the command line stands out in some areas where a GUI is a fine tool for other areas.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
lynx : Depends: lynx-cur (>= 2.8.8pre4-1)

@KGIII @berserk elinks browser for the win !

I miss some libs?

easier to use than lynx

10:49 AM
is it cmd line browser too?

@berserk what does apt-cache policy lynx tell you
yes, elinks is also cmd browser

Oli
links too

@berserk CLI, are awesome. Read: SS64 | Command line reference

I've not tried elinks. I'll have to poke at it and see, just to amuse myself. :D

Oli
w3m too

I guess it is missing.
@blade19899 Thanks, gonna check that.

Hmmm, interesting . . .both packages have same version , same as stated in the error

well, I have no clue tbh

@A.B. would know more about the package management . . .
@berserk well, try to install elinks

Oli
10:56 AM
@DevRobot Apologies for the pile on earlier. It wasn't clear what you were trying to do and in its current state I can only just about understand that you want to use something like subprocess, but not actually subprocess... I don't understand why though and I think that's going to be critical to know in order to be able to give you an answer you actually want (rather than people shouting open() at you).

sudo apt-get install elinks like that?

@berserk Try sudo apt-get install lynx-cur and give me the output

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

upwork : Depends: gksu but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libgtkglext1 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

@berserk apt-cache policy gksu libgtkglext1

I could get used to links and elinks. :D My terminal is an old greenscreen so it's not too hard to go back in time, mentally, and adjust. Thanks! It's like having an old BBS login but with a mouse!

A: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS screen freezing frequently

xiaodongjiePerhaps X server may choose incorrect driver for your computer. If the current version of Xorg that you use supports your computer, You need to try manually edit the X driver via a file, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/xorg.conf. @xiaodongjie perhaps you could add more sources, like links to other websites with similar issues

@A.B. could it be that he needs an ubuntu source enabled , the universe ?

11:07 AM
@xiaodongjie hmm - fiddling with xorg.conf can be a bit fraught - leaving you with black screens etc. So suggesting to adding and then subsequently making changes can be a bit difficult if the xorg.conf configuration is a black screen scenario. You'll need to advise that they need to understand what is a TTY = how to switch and be comfortable with using a text editor like nano.

@Serg It's enabled 500 archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty/universe amd64 Packages
in the apt-cache output

@A.B. if it wasn't enabled, what would be the output ?

@fossfreedom about tty switching?

@Serg (none)

let me add it.

11:08 AM
@Serg ` 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status`

This, is awesome:
> "The online activists are apparently more determined than ever to destroy Isis – and now, they may have just unleashed their most powerful weapon yet." - Anonymous are now ‘rickrolling’ Isis | Dazed

or nothing @Serg

@A.B. Only if it ever got downloaded and was present in the local deb cache.

@A.B. Executed. But it opened android studio.
Weird.

@ByteCommander yes

11:09 AM
(the one you empty with apt-get clean)

@berserk o_O

yeah no clue at all

@blade19899 lol , anonymous are the best

I closed it now, it is doing some more processing
I guess it is installed now.

smoke

11:10 AM
I am not sure how it opened android studio LOL

@berserk I don't understand, you run lynx and Android Studio is started? Very strange
command -v lynx

I have Android studio installed on ubuntu.
I haven't installed lynx yet.
sudo apt-get install gksu
I executed that command.
Lynx is installing now, I executed sudo apt-get install lynx! yay!
done!

=)

Thanks a lot! :)
lol I never used CLI browser

@fossfreedom I just added some words for tty switching.

11:13 AM
isExcited

@berserk You're welcome

@A.B. o/

hey @Ravan =)

@xiaodongjie yep - well done +1

thank you, @fossfreedom

11:16 AM
why Poltergeist is not available to download,

@Serg Whenever you or Fabby shout "smoke", I know you're going to the balcony. But I always instinctively try to remember whether I have left some food on the cooker... :D

I actually go outside. I dont have a balcony

@Serg as I still can't see you in tox, I sent you a mail - did you receive it ? :)

Yes

@hg8 Hello my friend ! :) how are exams ?
@Serg Thank you :)

@Serg i added some urls can help him to solve his issue.

@A.B. so what was the main issue in berserk's case

@hg8 this was today?

@xiaodongjie if you want to cover all bases you could mention (with big warning caveats) using newer drivers from the oibaf PPA ... and/or alternatively use newer kernel's as well. Obviously this is more serious a change - and if not done right can leave with you with a more unstable situation. not for newbies.

11:20 AM
@xiaodongjie good. U already have my upvote

@Ravan downloading movies violate copy rights

@Serg I know. thank you.

@Serg I do not know exactly. But solved with sudo dpkg -i --force-all … If you are sure that all dependencies are met, then you can do it that way.

@fossfreedom yes, So i wrote it as a last solution.

@Serg From the output, a dependency lock.

hg8
11:22 AM
@A.B. @cl-netbox Tuesday, Thursday & Friday ;)

@A.B. yeah, but which package ?

@Serg libgtkglext1 and upwork
sorry

I was installing upwork before.

upwork : Depends: libgtkglext1 but it is not going to be installed

was depackaging the .deb
No clue what magic you did :p
A lot to learn for me :D

11:28 AM
@hg8 again best luck for it ! ... keep my fingers crossed for you ! :)

@cl-netbox Thanks very much =)

@berserk Wait until you first compile something on your own or even use wget to grab a bunch of files over the network. Anyone have something simple for them to compile that they might have a use for? If you like seeing the terminal in action then you'll love compiling stuff.

@berserk lets learn together . . . some other day , i'd like to investigate this dependency error a bit further, but not right now - ive a translation pending

@KGIII ok KGII. I am so excited!
@Serg okay Serg :)

11:33 AM
Oh crap! Ha! It is going on morning there, isn't it? LOL You were saying you had to be up early and do some translating. LOL You never did go to sleep, did you @Serg?

@KGIII nope, i have a lady who asked me to translate a motor control manual . . . .well a page of it, and because i was taking too much time on other stuff, i messed up and now doing the translation
good thing is that i am enjoying it because it's related to electrical stuff

LOL Oops. You remind me, in some ways, of myself and just plain forgetting to sleep.

wow Lynx is cool
I never thought there will be something like CLI browser

@KGIII I don't forget to sleep, i forget to human . . .and i don't human well
3

lol

@berserk that's where it all started - in command line

@Serg That's okay - most humans kind of suck honestly. :D People suck! That's why I'm glad I'm not a people.

:D
I wanna be reincarnated as an owl
why ? no idea . . . Owls are wise

@Serg Sort of... There was a time when computers didn't even have screens. :D (Or keyboards.)
However, the first computer I used had a screen. It even had buttons, not really a keyboard like you're used to. Lemme see if I can find you a video. One sec.

@KGIII the old teletypes with actual teletype papers ? or back to the punch cards ? Hehe, well . . . I enjoy retro stuff, but my preference will stop at early unix terminals, VT200 or something . . .but nothing beyond that

11:39 AM
That was the first computer that I used in school. :/

daym

Oh it's awesome! Watch the video, it's a bit long but watch some of it and let it play in the background.
We had magnetic stripe cards, punch cards, plotters, and even had output to TV.
It was fully programmable.

The face at 1:16 is priceless

The most interesting thing I've read about was delay memory.

@ByteCommander you mean amnesia ?

11:43 AM
No, the very ancestor of RAM.

It was an awesome computer in its day @Serg. If you look at it and look at today, well, you can draw all sorts of conclusions. You can draw even more conclusions from the video. Much has changed and stayed the same.

@KGIII I need qt sdk?
qmake is not found.
btw, that escalated quickly:p

You should be able to either follow those directions or google for any particular words you might not understand. That's why I linked you. It'll give you somewhere to start and learn on your own. :D

lol ok :D

11:45 AM
@berserk that haven't even escalated . . . wait till you get into shell scripting . . . it's fun !

Highlight the words in question, right click, and search. You can feed a man to fish and he'll not be hungry for a day. You can teach a man to fish and he'll not be hungry for a lifetime.

You can do all sorts of things with scripts, from changing wallpaper through command line, to . . .well . . . alot of stuff

cool!
@KGIII okay, thanks :D

> You can feed a man to fish

LMAO xD

WUT? Needs to be a very big and hungry fish... xD

Wow... I no english good. :/

But if you teach fish to human, it will never be hungry

LOL And it's too late to edit it. :D
Here's a fun one: curl -s checkip.dyndns.org|sed -e 's/.*Current IP Address: //' -e 's/<.*$//' in the terminal will get you your public IP address.

@A.B. I almost have a script, but it has a caveat: if different components are spanned across multiple entries (e.g. there are two lines for wily-security, deb [...] wily-security main and deb [...] wily-security universe) it condenses them into a single line (i.e. deb [...] wily-security main universe). I suppose that's not a problem. Also if there are conflicting entries it doesn't do anything and just warns that there are conflicting entries (fixing that is risky)

@kos It's not a problem. =)
