12:10 AM
If anybody's interested in a game, I'll be available for a few hours starting in about 20 or 30 minutes.

12:51 AM
Just speak up in the next 40 minutes or so if you're interested. I'm thinking about something in FAE, probably; I've got a fantasy setting and a sci-fi setting with pre-mades or quick random generation potential.

@BESW I'm down for it

You do understand that my GMing style is going to be at odds with your usual playstyle?
I'm not saying, "No." I'm saying "understand going in that I'm going to be working on narrative logic and promoting emotional conflict, and by joining you're agreeing to try to buy into that paradigm."

@BESW it's worth trying, at the very least, to see if some of what the professionals are suggesting works :)

Fair enough.

@BESW interestingly enough, I've had more success with emotional-conflict-sensitive characters when they aren't an expectation of the game/universe

1:00 AM
...probably gonna go with the fantasy concept. Less temptation to argue physics than if the setting isn't superficially sciencey.

@BESW understood and mostly agreed :)

I was reticent to put myself down for FAE due to lack of experience and the increased need for pre-mades in a more complex game, but I could give it a shot.

...hm.
If we do FAE, it'll be Umdaar with randomly generated PCs.

@BESW alright. so, Umdaar 101?

But I'm considering Lady Blackbird as an alternative, partly because its mechanics might be interesting to bounce off Shalv.
@Pixie Got any opinions on that?
(My sci-fi premade is classic-era Doctor Who.)

1:07 AM
@BESW keep in mind I'm only very marginally familiar with the Whovian universe than Umdaar -- my SF exposure is primarily EVE (aka dark and gritty as all get out) with some SW&ST consumption of course
@BESW re: Lady Blackbird -- mechanics intro?

Hmm... the premade characters are one of the things that turned me off Lady Blackbird a bit. It's more difficult and less appealing to me to try to fill the boots of a preexisting character, especially on short notice. Random generation gets around that somehow, probably because it still feels like I get to put all the pieces together.

@Shalvenay Your LB PC has a handful of Traits, like Athletic, Goblin, or Imperial Noble. Each Trait has a number of tags; Goblin has Warp shape, Glide, Nightvision, Agile, Quick, Tumbler, and Teeth & Claws.
> When you try to overcome an obstacle, you roll dice. Start with one die. Add a die if you have a trait that can help you. If that trait has any tags that apply, add another die for each tag. Finally, add any number of dice from your personal pool of dice (your pool starts with 7 dice).
Roll all the dice you’ve gathered. Each die that shows 4 or higher is a hit. You need hits equal to the difficulty level (usually 3) to pass the obstacle.

this sounds good for an exploration-driven game

Advancement occurs via your character's "Keys," which are actions typical of your character: the Key of Banter, the Key of the Daredevil, the Key of the Guardian, etc.
Whenever you "hit a key" by doing something appropriate to your character, you get an XP point that you can spend to add something to your character sheet. You get more XP if hitting your key puts you in danger.

(the one-shot I ran in chat with Nyoze could work well with this, save for my trepidations with running it again)

1:13 AM
(And if your character defies his key, you can choose to remove it from the character sheet to add TWO new things.)
Umdaar, on the other hand, is pretty standard Fate Accelerated with its rules.

@BESW right re: Umdaar although it doesn't give me any clue what the setting itself is like

The setting, it goeth thusly: Thousands of years ago the planet of Umdaar was ruled by the Demiurge, who used artefacts of great power to manipulate the environment and guide evolution. Then they vanished, causing millennia of chaos. Umdaar is now populated by a ridiculous variety of humanoids, robots, cyborgs, and chimeras.

@BESW interesting. would be a good setting to toss my extraterrestrial into -- he'd fit right in ;)

Recently a group of cruel tyrants have recoverd Demiurge artefacts and used them to conquer part of the planet. They're opposed by a small alliance of free lands, and both groups send explorers--"archaeonauts"--into the chaotic wildernesses to search for more Demiurge artefacts.

@BESW did the Demiurge ever achieve any escape velocities?

1:19 AM
The PCs, obviously, are archaeonauts. In the right hands, Demiurge artefacts could cure the planet and bring peace and prosperity--or conquer it entirely, or destroy it utterly.
@Shalvenay We'd find that out through play.

@BESW alrighty then.

For a one-shot, we'd keep our goals manageably small.

@BESW wouldn't fit now, but I could see that working out at some point in the future with said extraterrestrial -- he gets drawn in to the mess by finding weird space junk

In my IRL campaign, Umdaar is the inside of a generation ship that Atlanteans built to colonise Mars, but it missed the target and has been drifting through space ever since.

@BESW oh gosh, that could be hilarious. cues docking computer failure

1:23 AM
@Althis [poke]
So, sounds like we're doing Umdaar.
You don't need the PDF as a player, but it's free here.

I suppose I can get along alright without it -- saying it's free here when you still have to go through the bloody shopping cart process defeats the point of sending a link sigh

I understand.
The Back Room is frozen, so shall we use the Fate room?

 Fate chat and game room

Good questions raised here should hit the main site too! Fudge...
You'll probably want to install the Fudge dice script, though eyeballing the d6s works too.
@Pixie Don't worry about lack of experience with FAE. That's not an issue.

@BESW Then I will attempt. :) Though... my computer has decided to kick up a fuss, so it may be a moment before I make it into the room.

I never knew this room even existed!! [stars]

I did not know either
d6
1d6

1:34 AM
This is not an RPG room.

ah
hmm
my script is not working for fudge dice,...

Did you turn it on?

I am not sure how to do that,.. I may have done it though
need to restart browser to check

The script link explains.

oh
it looks like it is working
I just checked in the wrong room XD
that was the whole issue XDXDXDXD

1:45 AM
Hey.
is it going right now?

Hey. We're doing chargen in the Fate room.

Who is with you?

Pixie and Shalv.

K.

@Althis Please keep side chatter here.
Clear the space for those playing.
The players are here as well, so you can ping them.
@Pixie is the fudge dice script working well for you?

1:57 AM
@doppelgreener Yes, I got it running. My browser is still a bit buggy in general, but I think I'm set.

2:25 AM
Ok.
My body is ready.
@BESW, can I please come out and play?

Alrighty.

2:38 AM
While Althis works on his character, I'll muse over this here: trying to phrase the drive to push forward regardless of who or what is in her way as an aspect. (I also feel like she needs an appropriately flashy and over the top surname or title, but that can come later.)

@Pixie, "I will not bow to adversity."

Never retreat, never surrender.

That is good too, but that kinda implies an enemy.
Adversity is more broad.

It sounds like she sees the entire world as an opponent.

If it's between herself and her goals. She'll stop when she's dead.

2:48 AM
There ya go. I'll stop when I'm dead.

Was just thinking that. Yep, that works! Thanks for the assistance, both of you.

3:05 AM
@Pixie that's an amazing phrase. I love it.

3:17 AM
@doppelgreener It is pretty fun. xD

4:09 AM
You know.
I kinda miss skills in FAE.

I'm okay without them, it's just that they give me a better idea of what is within bounds for my character to do.

Exactly.
But I understand this is waaaay quicker.

I look at approaches as TV logic: the Careful person can do ANY deep-thought thing, from chess to programming to crime scene analysis. The Forceful person is equally good at intimidating interrogation suspects and kicking down doors.

It is kinda loose in terms of character development though, isn't it?

Kinda? Approaches don't define talent, just... style.
The narrative permissions for what you can do are instead defined through aspects, stunts, and shared group understanding.

1 hour later…
5:32 AM
@Althis I enjoy the crunch of skills a lot, but for a one shot, approaches are everything I could ask for.

I also like using Approaches for certain settings/properties.
Doctor Who, for example, is just begging for approaches.

Fast to define, simple to use, all-encompassing so you're not incapable, and they help you characterise yourself quickly.

Hmm, I'm not sure the approaches really help me characterize much. They're too vague. They are relatively easy to use in play, though.

5:51 AM
Morning

@Pixie Sure, they won't get into your specifics. But, say, Samantha Carter's the Careful one, Daniel Jackson's the Clever one, Teal'c and Jack O'Neill are Flashy and Forceful. It gives your character a predominant Way They Do Things that is prevalent in TV logic.

looks like I missed a fun game, damn timezones and the requirement for sleep

If you want to read it, the logs are here:

 Fate chat and game room

Good questions raised here should hit the main site too! Fudge...

Game started here.
in Fate chat and game room, 4 hours ago, by BESW
Welcome to the first one-shot of Stack Exchange Plays RPGs. Today we'll be playing Masters of Umdaar with @Shalvenay and @Pixie, using randomly generated characters.
It's a little too long for me to make into a conversation quickly and easily.

Yea I'll read through the thread
@BESW Were you playing core or simplified to FAE?
Whoops

6:05 AM
For this session? Masters of Umdaar is a Fate Accelerated setting with some minor mechanical additions.

Should have put that here. Too many chat windows open

2 messages moved from Fate chat and game room
Easily done.

ah cool
Was just wondering because the DTR says for Fate Core
but yea I see in the description says for FAE

Oh, just in case anyone would find this useful for one of their games:
They're deliberately half filled in: enough is there to just start playing, and enough is blank for players to customise and make the characters their own as play progresses.
Simply fill in the blank stunts, aspects, and approach ranks as you need them during the session.

ah noticed that, have the FAE book open on other screen and was just on that section about approaches

6:16 AM
I put the Doctor Who stuff together myself, and I've used it twice.

oh nice

I recommend a similar "half completed" style for any pre-made Fate PCs.

Yea, I'm sure I've see that before from a previous time you shared it

You may have seen that very same document linked in an answer I wrote about premade Fate characters.

They're designed to be used by players only vaguely familiar with the franchise.

6:18 AM
It's cool that the system actually encourages half made chars when you start vs fully fleshed out

It pleases me, too.

Me too. It's very beneficial for gameplay.

For a similar treatment of full Fate Core PCs, look at Aeon Wave.
@doppelgreener Actually, this is a new version with one less aspect on each PC.

is the main RPG room the only one with the fudge roller script built in?

@BESW Oh neat!
@Tashio It's comes enabled by default in Fate Chat & Game Room, but in other RPG.SE rooms you can activate it & deactivate it as you choose.
but depending on what you mean by "built in" - it's not a part of Stack Exchange. The fudge dice script just piggybacks off the dice service all RPG.SE rooms enjoy.

6:28 AM
@doppelgreener Ah just wondering because pretty certain I've seen fudge dice without the script but is that because it pulls those images when someone with the script on runs it?

Morning all

Mornin

@Tashio The script can only possibly affect the very people who are running it on their own machines. It has no way of affecting other peoples' views. You might have seen screenshots here or there people using the script have posted.

I don't know the usual activity of the FAE Room, but wouldn't it make sense to have a dedicated room for a game? It seems it'd better be based on RPG.SE for the dice script, but regardless it keeps things cleaner...?

@bilbo_pingouin Fate Chat & Game Room is, as the name suggests, also our game room for playing Fate. :)
We have a conversation bookmark feature which can be used to isolate this game. On its own, the game's room might just get frozen.

6:32 AM
@doppelgreener Might have been.

@doppelgreener it gets frozen after 2 weeks of inactivity...
if nothing happened in that time, then is it worth keeping it up?
but, as I said, I don't know about the usual activity on that room... if it's mostly abandonned, then all the better :)

It gets a fair amount of use I think, but mostly by people who are already in this chat anyway

@bilbo_pingouin We do use it fairly actively, but we've run plenty of Fate games in there amid chat. I see what you're getting at, though it hasn't caused problems in the past.

@doppelgreener fair enough :)

7:26 AM
We have a Back Room chat for games
It's frozen.
If you want a dedicated game room, just get that unfrozen by a mod.

2 hours later…
9:00 AM
Well guess good thing there are a couple mods in here pretty often

3 hours later…
12:17 PM

The Back Room: Live Tabletop Games

A space for online tabletop gaming.

So is that supposed to be our In Character room or something?

it was unfrozen?

Yeah, I asked WaxEagle to unfreeze it.
And yes, if people want a dedicated room for gameplay, that's the best place for it.

wow that room has some cobwebs in it

It's been around for five years, and scheduling regular Stack games is--as we're noticing--not trivial.
So it just gets unfrozen whenever it's needed, and goes into cryo the rest of the time.

12:28 PM
I would be willing to run my module I am working on when I have it finished if anyone would be interested?

@Aaron you mean like now? Or at some other time (much later today, or in the next days)?

@Aaron What game and what time?

Not right now no. I am not even done making it yet.

@Aaron System?

I was just throwing it out there so everyone knew it was an option.
@Tashio Pathfinder

12:32 PM
I think generally people here are interested to play.. that was the point of this chat after all... :)

I'll admit PF is not my favorite

Blurp, no d20 System for me, thanks.

@BESW I am not familiar enough with any non d20 to run them. If you run a game or two in Fate or something I might try to migrate it to that and run it.

FAE seems pretty easy to pick up

If we ever have overlap. My availability will be limited and generally with minimal advance notice.
I ran a game today because a class I was supposed to teach got cancelled at the last minute.
@Tashio I've introduced a LOT of people to RPGs with quite a few systems, and FAE is probably tied for my favourite for the purpose, sharing top billing with Roll For Shoes.

12:46 PM
Yea, something i noticed at the last con I went to, the RPG tournament was dominated by FAE followed by a couple games of CoC and just 1 d&d 5th ed
why do people insist on putting the front and back page at the top of pdf files

1:08 PM
woot 2x fae books printed booklet mode center stapled

1 hour later…
2:25 PM
@BESW On defence and you tie you get to look at opponents actions to see what it is. What exactly does that mean? You get to see how he attacked you ie flashy flourish of his weapon?

6 hours later…
7:56 PM
as far as I can tell, pathfinder does not offer a PDF to download with the core rules, does it?

Don't think so
only the online SRD

SRD?
system rules description ?

@bilbo_pingouin they do - it costs $9.99 paizo.com/products/…

@eimyr I see...
@Tashio I know the site alright, but I don't know for what does the acronym SRD stand...

8:02 PM
@bilbo_pingouin System Reference Document

thanks :)

@Aaron pretty cool :)

8:18 PM
@bilbo_pingouin You just watch the imgur clip or you go to the actual video?

just the clip
ok, now I watched the whole thing
quite nice :)

8:53 PM
One thing I've noticed about FAE. Very few examples of some of the more complex things, so having access to core would help.

@Tashio I'm playing Core for about two months from scratch. God, I wish I've chosen FAE.

@Eimyr ah, example, when creating an aspect in the scene what do you roll against? A number the GM decides is appropriate for what you're trying to do?

Yes, or against active opposition if the target is an actor

or if you're taking consequences to soak up stress what is an example of a minor/moderate/severe consequence

I often ask my players "Dudes, how difficult is having this Grizzled Guard be Momentarily Distracted?"

8:58 PM
Yea
Rules are simple for a player but find for a GM there could be a bit more detailed information

Minor consequence is something that takes a couple days to wear off. I would say a Sprained Ankle or a Black eye.
Moderate consequence is something that requires some time to heal. Cuts, more dangerous bruises, Shot Through The Leg etc.

Yea, it's not to hard to figure out but a couple examples would be nice, but I guess they really wanted to keep the system simple and left all the extra fluff for core

I think it was a conscious decision.
Fate flavours are setting agnostic.

there's plenty of references to go read this section in core for examples as it is

a Severe Consequence is one thing if you're playing a neurotic magical teenager and something else if you're a superhero.

9:02 PM
Yea
Your cellphone is broken.

Your PLANET is broken.

Pretty much
also circumstances can change how severe the same thing is too

Precisely. If you're a warrior a Broken Arm is severe, but if you're a robot it's a mild nuisance that annoys you until you find a repair depot.

yea but even to the same person depending on the scene/scenario

I guess.

9:05 PM
City: Your cellphone breaks. Minor, Middle of nowhere in the jungle: your satelite phone breaks, moderate to severe depending on how much you rely on it

Do you have trouble with conceding? It took me some serious thinking to wrap my head around it.

Not overly, seems simple enough, it's basically I get to run away on my own terms instead of being stuck with a gun stuck to my head

yeah, bar the conflict's stake
Remember that bit about how each scene has a win/lose condition?

Probably helps in BESW's game last night he had the one wolf conceed and run away
So had a pretty cool example of it in action

mhm
The problem arises where the stake of the conflict is about the only thing the npcs care about

9:09 PM
That I still need to look at again, I've read the GM section but skimmed over it while a bit distracted need to read it properly again

e.g. I've had a problem where a bunch of ambushers conceded to my players in Core.
But for the groups savage barbarian the stake is - either party dies.
Because, you know, ambushers are scum and he won't suffer a dishonor of letting them go. For him, the fight was never about survival.

Yea can see the conflict there, they concede so it's on their terms but the barbarian is basically going to try slaughter them
I think then their conceding needs to be tuck tail and run away

That's not exactly that way. It's on winner's terms, but if you concede, you can select one non-stake fate that you can avoid.

non-stake fate?

So my solution (it was my first Fate sesh) was that they unfortunately didn't get a chance of conceding
I mean, if you are fighting, say, to save the MacGuffin from destruction, you can't concede and say "yea, so we lose, but the Mac Guffin is not destroyed"
that's like saying "we lose, but we win"
also, survival is implicit in Fate

9:13 PM
Yup

I'd play some custom setting roll for shoes any day now
I love that microsystem from the first sight, but I've never had a chance

yea was thinking of maybe doing a one shot RFS just not sure what setting

Oh I have so many ideas

cool

The players are Young Adult harem romance novel characters who desperately try to steer the plot away from shallow and pretentious teen pandering. The Big Bad is the main protagonist who wants to get re-published and get sequels by doing exactly that.
The players are the elves trapped in nazi Santa toy factory. It's 17th of December and they only have a week until Santa decimates the least productive workers.
The players are supreme beings who discover that their drunken shenanigans has been turned into an oppressive religion with large fundamentalist movements. They do a second coming some two thousand years later, while terribly hungover, to try to fix it before the Allgod discovers they messed up.

9:24 PM
lol

I can go on like that for a while
BTW, if anyone would like to play any of these, just drop me a line.

I roll for a girlfriend.

You now have girlfriend at +2. You also can't go out tonight.

lol
Okay bed time for me, catch you tomorrow, maybe some RFS then

I doubt it.
I won't have the time until next week

9:29 PM
ah okay

@Malandy Hi!
Joining the roleplay-ready bunch or just lurking?

10:13 PM
@eimyr Actually, you can also mitigate a stake.

how?

A Core example is, your enemy wants you dead: you concede, and narrate how he deals you a mortal wound and throws you into a river... and you also narrate how the wound actually missed your vital organs or is otherwise not actually lethal, and you wash up somewhere downriver in horrible pain and far from the action.
@Tashio Link to the rule you're looking at, please.

10:33 PM
Good night.
