7:14 PM
@Pixie @Tashio @Aaron @Slytherincess @ryan @MonicaCellio @bilbo_pingouin @James @MikeL. (I think that's all of you) - I said I'd pull a chatroom together for the RPG discussion, so here it is.

Hey

Afternoon, all.
Suggestions or thoughts you have about the project, game, etc welcome
Pathfinder has been suggested

Pretty flexible.

(It should be noted that I have precisely 0 experience with RPGs, I'm just trying to organise.)

I'll admit PF is not my favourite but depending on the game can work with it

7:19 PM
Hi. I haven't played for years, so any recent game, I'll need to get the rules. :)

@bilbo_pingouin You and me both.

My current experience lately has been with 5th ed

I'm easy on what game/system we're doing, since I don't know any of them

Art you planning on running the game?

Pathfinder is free and my preference.
If we play another game I would need to get the books from someone.

7:21 PM
is it fixed that we'd go for standard fantasy..?

Don't have to
Could do FATE and something else, or Shadowrun is my other game of choice but know it's not that popular

I would say the first thing to decide would be the genre...

@Tashio Probably not, given that I have no experience even playing, let along GMing. I'm very happy for someone experienced to take that.

no problem with shadowrun for me ;)

Afternoon everyone

7:22 PM
@bilbo_pingouin ah cool

so 1) genre, 2) DM/GM...
for me the rules is secondary

Aye

I love shadowrun's feel

and more important to the DM/GM

It seems logical that to define rules we need to know what we're playing, so...

7:23 PM
5th edition is good. The benefit of pathfinder is that all the source material is available for free digitally (there are some handy phone apps)

5th has a free basic version

I have the DM Guide, Monster Manual and Players handbook for 5e

Yea as well

What material we have between us would be useful if we could share it around - drop it on a cloud and share a link, or something.

@ArtOfCode True enough
How many have never played table-top before?

7:26 PM
raises hand

I have played and run games

@James I have limited experience with table-top but am very familiar with D&D 3.5 and up

maybe another question then... who would be up to run the game?

I would be ok with shadowrun I have a friend who could get me the books

I can run pathfinder...probably and I have run a campaign in 5e so I would be comfortable doing that.

7:32 PM
I've played and run games
lately mostly on forums as play by post

@Tashio That will be handy experience while we sort this out.

pbp is nice for people who don't share timezones

What type of game do we want? Genre, balance of story vs battle tactics, overall feel, that sort of thing.
My experience is with FRPs -- AD&D, D&D 3.0 & 3.5, RuneQuest!, stuff like that.
Oh, we should think about whether people with different amounts of time can participate, and how much is synchronous vs async (because timezones). I don't have a lot of time but if there were something I could have a lesser or occasional role in, that'd be cool.

I generally prefer fantasy, if I were going to vote I would say 5e makes the most sense for this effort...we have people with experience and the books, and the system is fairly simple when compared to say pathfinder

7:35 PM
@MonicaCellio If we could do that, that'd be perfect for me as well. I don't have masses of time to play with.

Also, online is different -- should think about how that works. That probably drives toward higher-level stuff -- story, strategy, arc -- versus "and in round 14 I swing at the bugbear and...".

I created a google doc for notes and such. Feel free to add genres and vote ect.

Yea online/forums tend to generate more detail descriptions and rp and less focus on combat because combat is slower

Can someone star the link so it is on the right and easily accessible?

I'd vote Fantasy for genre

7:36 PM
I'm happy with Fantasy if that's what most people want

I consider system to be secondary to the stuff I said about genre/style/approach. AFAIK, anything free and not massively complex should work well for a variety of backgrounds.

Aye, I'd go with that

well 5th has the free version, and enough of us have the books to fill in the fluff

you have a link to that @Tashio?

Yea just a sec

7:39 PM
Im somewhat limited in what I can search for from work...

@ryan @Tashio Are you in the google doc? If not I will add your votes to the genre section

@Aaron can you put me down for fantasy and 5e please

@James Gotcha

thanks

7:42 PM
Anyone have a preference of Shadowrun?
Right now our systems are Pathfinder, Shadowrun, FATE, and 5e

I'm happy with 5th or sr

I'd prefer 5e or Pathfinder

@ryan I added your votes

I'd happily go with Pathfinder

I also think we should go for something that takes time into consideration
I have a 3 week old... my schedule is not my own :P

7:44 PM
:)

Sounds good.

lol yeah I have two of my own, 5 and 1...I feel your pain.

Nope, that just means you're available 24/7

@Tashio braindead...but available

We're not all in the same timezone either, so we can't expect to be online at the same time every <regular period>

7:44 PM
I don't know if any of the systems are better and being dropped and picked up. I think that would be up to the DM.

@James That just means he gets beat a lot
Hi there @BESW

@BESW Ah the master of chat games

Mid combat would be easy to drop and pick up. Mid RP would be a bit more dicey as you would lose the feel of the RP

It's been my experience that lightweight systems like Fate Accelerated and Roll For Shoes are better suited for play in this sort of chat.

Yeah the DM is going to have to be a proverbial wizard...

7:46 PM
There speaketh the voice of experience...

Yea, there is also the option of a forum/rpol game otherwise

Hmm. FAE, RFS, Lady Blackbird, Great Ork Gods, Lasers & Feelings...

Lasers and Feelings is an amazing title...

Are there two Aarons here or did I put my name twice under Feel

(Everything I'm listing is free and very lightweight.)

7:48 PM
@Aaron Just you from what I see.

@Aaron Think you're on twice

@BESW We are using a google doc for notes and such it is on the star bar

@BESW Probably a better place to start.

FAE is pay as much as you like right?

@Tashio Down to 0, yes, and there's also an SRD.

7:50 PM
Speaking of not my own schedule, I have to go for lunch and spell my wife so she can eat something. I'll be back in a whileish.

@ryan you already spelled wife... :)

@BESW, may I be so bold as to ask you to add a link to those systems...?

@BESW am I messing you up when I accept your changes? They should be automatic but it keeps asking me to accept them.

AAAARGH blluuuuuuueeeee

lol

7:58 PM
And branded with Warner Bros logo!
Am I in hell?

@Aaron It shifts my insertion point sometimes, yes. I'm not sure why I'm not in Editing mode, it says I should be.
[refreshes page]

alright alright alright, how does one use that document?

@bilbo_pingouin It'd be great if someone were to use the RPG.SE tag wikis to find those links to add while I'm typing. Otherwise I'll add them when I'm done.

@everyone I added a new section. Time, how do we want sessions to go? One off sessions, long term campain, or short stories of a few sessions long

@eimyr One goes and makes one's edits to it, and one waits for the mighty Owner to accept those changes.

8:00 PM
@BESW Is there a version of Dresden files based on fae or just the fate version?

The FAE version of Dresden Files is still going through closed beta testing.

@BESW Yea I am not sure why either. I specifically set it so anyone with link would have edit mode available.

ah right
okay grabbed FAE

@BESW @eimyr Watching my approve edit bar going up and down when you type together is rather amusing. :)

I think we should not add more systems, unless it is really different... otherwise we'll have more systems than users
hard to get a vote

8:08 PM
I vote for Heroes Unlimited 2e :D

So far Pathfinder, Shadowrun, and 5e all have two votes

Well if we can have multiple votes my second would be Pathfinder

@eimyr We have a Genre section already

This is different

Ah slightly different nevermind

8:11 PM
give me 3 minutes

Should we each have lets say three votes?

I see no reason to limit votes.

Agreed.
Just because I want to play this OR that does not give me desire less power.

What do you mean by "Lines & Veil"?

Aye, agreed on that one

8:14 PM
....I feel like downvoting anything proprietary.

we should vote for what we don't want to have?

@bilbo_pingouin My link to the RPG.SE explanation of the concept just got approved.
Lines are "events/themes I don't want the game to go anywhere near" and veils are "I'm okay with the game having this stuff, but only in an offscreen way."

We're voting to determine what RPG we wanna play yeah? I just got in a little while ago

can we have an anti-veil?

@BESW What do you mean?

8:16 PM
sort of a darker and edgier stuff that we would enjoy having?

We can have a theme request section, I suppose.

L&V is something I think we'd need to properly discuss through chat, make sure we're all on the same page.
Speaking of which, does anyone have a link to the Same Page Tool?

@aaron As in, lets say sexual content, in game or off screen or not at all

well, that's themes
but saying I'd enjoy a Politics and Investigation story is different to saying I don't care about the themes but I'd like to touch upon subjects of racial discrimination

@Aaron Free systems are far preferable.
I mean, it's not like we're lacking in them.

8:19 PM
@BESW Ah.
I think most of the systems except shadowrun are free or at least have a free version

So many edits to approve

@ArtOfCode You'll be happy to know I'm done. Heading off to work.

Heh. Enjoy :)

yea 10:20pm here probably drifting off to bed soonish myself

Classic Marvel forever!

8:21 PM
Only 21:21 here

same here

3:22 here

its only 1521 here but I have marathon chauffeur duties this afternoon...

Pathfinder and 5e have 3 votes each. Shadowrun has 2 still

@ArtOfCode anywhere close to Midlands?

8:22 PM
@eimyr Nope. London.

Cheers.

[pops back in] At the end of the day, the system we use is selected from those the GM's most comfortable with.

same TZ as @Tashio for me.

My three votes are for Pathfinder, Classic Marvel forever, and Heroes Unlimited 2e

@BESW yes, this is what I tried to convey long before... but it got drown :D

8:24 PM
I thought we don't limit ourselves

So perhaps that's the question to settle: who's GM?
@Tashio and @eimyr are nominated

Can someone please fill in Kobolds are my baby?
I know nothing, but I'd like to play it
@BESW maybe?
self-nominated, but I'd rather play
I don't know majority of settings named

I guess depends on the final setting chosen

yes, that's why the questions other than the system are more important

So: what do we need to settle first?

8:27 PM
I guess for most of us, learning a new set of rules to play isn't problematic... but for the DM/GM it can be a pain

I can DM pathfinder (Which seems to have the most votes right now)
Nope I was wrong PF is tied with 5e still.

@bilbo_pingouin man, do I run the game for you! rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/64147/…

I would suggest: 1. Genre, 2. Duration, 3. Theme, 4. Themes, 5 DM Style, 6. DM
4
and the systems sort of come out of it

I agree the system votes are not as important as the other questions but it is nice to be able to see them
@bilbo_pingouin I agree with this importance list

I think the general consensus is to Fantasy

8:31 PM
I think structure is going to betray us

@Tashio Most voted Anything. I voted Scifi/Fantasy mix and James voted just Fantasy

So Fantasy. Duration?

Can we please make a game list on the bottom or something, so that we can vote on a specific combo?
start with one off and see if people want to come back
It doesn't get simpler than that.

@eimyr I'd love to play that game :D

@bilbo_pingouin not from UK, are you?

8:34 PM
I must go
I will be back later

@aaron Cya

bye Aaron
@eimyr no, unfortunately...

Something to also consider is how many players we're going to end up with

Splitting might be reasonable
but i think TIME is the most important factor of all
which day? when?
for me, that's the most probable deal-breaker

Yea, if we're going to run it on chat we need to select a day/time

8:37 PM
I'd like to be able to do it so that we can each play when we're available, but I guess that might be quite hard.

well then you're looking more towards a forum based game maybe with patches done in chat

@ArtOfCode I did that a while ago. Using a forum, but that was basically three concurrent one-on-one games run in paralell.
when would you like to play?
I could potentially do Mon, Tue, Thu, 20-24 UTC

shrug
If we're in chat, I could do Mon-Weds, Fri-Sun 19-22 UTC

Another option is to have a forum game running, and do smaller 1 shot fillers as part of the main storyline based on whoever is around at a time

@Tashio That could be a pretty good solution

8:43 PM
I'm available 15-22 most days.

I think that if we want to do some serious stuff, a forum/post-based solution is probably preferable

RPOL has some nice game forum setups
You can have multiple threads for a game

because on chat, it's going to be a pain to accommodate the different time-zones on a regular base

Yup

OR we could just have "hey dudes, let;s play X for the next 3 hours on chat" drives

8:46 PM
We could
The main problem with that is having char sheets prepped

probably on thursday I'll log in and say "who wants to play a Roll For Shoes Superhero story" or something similar

there are two possibilities

not if it's a microgame with little character prep
or a completely free roleplay

the GM can prepare the characters, like in a convention, and offer them to the players
or we could make it in a forgotten-realms like world, where herores/mercenaries are qcommon
common
we all hang around in a large city and could join on any adventure

that same char would only work for one system
e.g. I can't play my 5e sorcerer in pathfinder today and shadfowrun tomorrow

8:49 PM
that's true... but we discussed already choosing some system

right

I'm just saying that's a possiblity

I'm unlikely to get into something regular, I'd rather have System of The Week

that way we indeed choose some system
each build some character for it

to try new things basically

8:50 PM
and whoever feels like it calls for a small quest

Sounds good to me

could also be done... like the "challenges" we have on Worldbuilding, one could think of saying this fortnight is DnD 5, here are the rules... and people may come up with ideas, and everyone is responsible to build a level N character on his own

The more structure you give this, the more likely it is to fail.

well we're also not limited to playing 1 game either

well this is why my vote (if it were to come down to it) would be the RPG-con-like thing that the DM comes up with a story and some pre-built characters
no need to agree on anything before hand
the DM is free to impose the system
but it would be preferable to choose that system between a given list
not to come up with a weird mechanism

8:55 PM
I like that idea. Other votes for that idea?

As a rule of thumb, and based on what I'm getting to be the general ethos of this group, that seems like it has good potential for success.

Yup
Think that will work best, we can always start side game for something more long term in a specific game if there is interest
I've got a couple ideas for it but will take a bit of prep work

we come back to the point that something longer will probably require another support than the chat

Yea

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a chat game in desire of long-form goals must be in want of a Google Document.
2

9:00 PM
Sounds good to me.

I may be interested in running a game sometimes, but it will be on short notice and only a one-shot.

@BESW FAE I assume?

Dunno yet.
See what mood takes me.

we seem to have reached an agreement... do we hope the others will read it up, or should be summarise it on google doc thing?

Probably best to throw a summary up on the doc
I'll probably do a RFS at some point and maybe some D&D 5th ed on a simplified level
Mini quests with a couple fights and some RP should be simple enough to run in chat
I'd like to see something more long term but that's probably going to be needed to be taken offsite

9:06 PM
should we agree that the list of system provided in the google doc is good enough as a basis of system "expected to be known"?
yes, I'd love a long-term campaign, but I am not sure I'd be available, and by chat only it isn't going to work

That's a big list to know
I know RFS 5th ed and shadowrun
others can be picked up pretty easily, some of those are pretty complex systems

@BESW I seem to favour your humorous freeform oneshot preference

so I gave it a shot to summarize... you guys can correct it up :)

@BESW could I please also ask you to add KObolds Ate My Baby to the roster?

Free and simply rule set?
okay off to bed catch you all tomorrow

9:25 PM
just a stupid question... how's the dice rolling made in such cases?
GM do 'em all?

Can roll on chat

Or random number generator posting to chat. I've got a bot that would do that for us.

if I can remember the command for it

ok, that's pretty cool :D

there is a fudge dice script we can load as well for fate
I think I'm missing something in the structure shows the loading but does not return anything
@BESW knows the command for it though
anyway now I'm really off

9:29 PM
'night

I'm pretty sure it works for RPG.SE rooms.
yeah, in RPG.se you just write 3d6 and it rolls
3d6
not here whough

probably an add-on

9:45 PM
1d

dd
dbz
dod
Nope.
Doesn't seem to work.

I think what's been proposed could work well. Pre-builts are not normally my thing, so I might sit out, but it's a good idea. I'm just popping on briefly at work, so I'll look over things more later.

Dice are only available in rpg.SE rooms. The fudge script just changes d6s to dFs, it doesn't add dice functionality on its own.
Also you have to activate it per room.
And I'm not adding a game that so flagrantly defies multiple lines and veils.

Thank you for your knowledge, @BESW. Honestly, you are the glue that holds us together.

Flattery will get you... Surprisingly far, actually.

10:02 PM
Here is a doodle to help us schedule stuff. It should automatically correct the times to your proper time zone based on your IP address and it should facilitate the formation of groups with their respective GMs.
Hey @BESW, shouldn't I still be able to delete my comments even after they've gone cold?

Nope, only mods and room owners.

10:19 PM
Aw...
It is irking me...
A lot...

@Althis alright, added myself on there
(although I'd really like to join you at some point for DW, it'll probably depend on the setting you're running in)

10:35 PM
I am usually pretty setting agnostic.
I usually just quiz the players about ideas they might like for fantasy settings and make something up.
But we can play in an established setting if you want.
As long as it is not Warhammer, I am fine.

yeah -- I'd be interested to see what'd happen if I pushed DW to its limits (it sounds like it could run the "elf in a railyard" oneshot that I ran with Nyoze in chat, but that's a very unusual scenario, and not something I'd be totally comfortable running for a group)
but that comes later
I think I could lend the 5e campaign world I'm working on to such an effort, although I'd need to get a bunch of stuff typed up as it's all handwritten scribbles atm

1 hour later…
11:55 PM
@BESW Correction: only mods. ROs can't delete.
@Althis I assume that's the one you wanted deleted.
