1:30 AM
Welcome to the first one-shot of Stack Exchange Plays RPGs. Today we'll be playing Masters of Umdaar with @Shalvenay and @Pixie, using randomly generated characters.

oh
nice
I will go there

It'll probably be pretty short, just a scene or two to get our feet wet. Don't try to rush things.

One browser restart dance later, I arrive.

Hooray!
I've explained the basic concept of the setting, and you're both passingly familiar with Fate, so lets' dive into character generation and we'll answer any questions as we go.
To keep the dice from getting confusing, we'll do this one at a time. @Shalvenay, would you like to start while Pixie works with her browser?
Masters of Umdaar has a semi-random generation process that we'll be using to speed things up.

sure

1:37 AM
Alright! Umdaar chargen starts by asking you to roll 4d6 (dF, really) to find your "bioform" (in D&D, that'd be your race).

4d6

That result is "Humanoid." You're effectively a human, but maybe with some added bits for flair. If you find this boring, roll twice more and we'll pick the one you like best.
> Humanoids are often Clever, which makes them good Mages and Bounty Hunters. They use weapons like Minor Artifacts, Wands, and Living Weapons.

we could roll this stuff in the Genesis room too, but it isn't like it is inappropriate here

Let's keep it all together.

1:40 AM
@BESW humanoid is fine

mk

Lets randomly generate your stunts next, and then we'll pick approaches and define aspects in response to what that tells us about your character.
Roll 4d6, twice.
(Umdaar suggests that, especially with newer Fate players, we only start with two stunts each.)

4d6

this isn't working very well :P
4d6

1:42 AM

> Rifle or Pistol (Careful): You have a deadly ranged weapon—like a sonic blunderbuss, a laser cannon, or a uranium six-shooter—that can blanket an area with deadly shots. Once per scene, you can gain +2 when attempting to Carefully create an advantage to pin down an enemy, firing warning shots or laying down suppressive fire.

@BESW heheh.

I'm going to use your second roll on the Powers table instead of the Weapons table, for variety.

alrighty then

(And because it happens to match really well!)
> Metal Skin (Careful): You can rapidly cover your skin with thick metal or bone armor. If you spend an exchange doing nothing but defending yourself, you gain +2 whenever you Carefully defend yourself against physical attacks until the end of the scene.

1:45 AM
nice

Hi, am I late?

not really
starting their character creation

So, with two Careful stunts, it'd make sense for you to choose to be a Runekeeper or a Paladin. These classes are just flavour describing your chosen approaches:
Runekeeper: +3 Careful; +2 Flashy, Clever; +1 Sneaky, Forceful; +0 Quick.
Paladin: +3 Careful; +2 Flashy, Forceful; +1 Clever, Quick; +0 Sneaky.

Do I need anything?
Aksim weren't guys from the other stacks be joining us?

@Althis Are you intending to participate or observe? Right now, the players are just Pixie and Shalvenay. If you want to observe you need a pair of eyes and may want the Masters of Umdaar rulebook (or you can just read along here, BESW will be quoting stuff), if you want to play that's another matter.

1:48 AM
@BESW I'll go Paladin

@Althis this is a different game

@Althis See the script link in the room description? It'd be helpful if you installed that. You can download the PDF of the setting [here](www.drivethrurpg.com/product/155458/Masters-of-Umdaar--A-World-of-Adventur‌e-for-Fate-Core), but it's not necessary. And if you want to refer to Fate Accelerated rules, they're here.
@Althis We're everybody who's available at this time.
@Shalvenay Excellent.
I'm putting PCs together on this Drive sheet.
Now, all that's left is to fill in your aspects.
Your concept is pretty easy: take "Careful Humanoid Paladin" and shake it up a bit to customise your character.

I am working right now. Doing a few things in photoshop.
I will probably not have time to really play...

Your motivation, which is best phrased as "I must...", tells us why your character has chosen such a high-risk lifestyle as delving into the Wild Lands to find ancient Demiurge artefacts.

Let me see how quick I can finish this.

1:54 AM
And your shared aspect, we'll leave for later: it's going to describe your character's relationship to another PC.
Examples of Motivations: I Must Crack the Riddle of the Runes; I Must Make the Masters Suffer; I Must Have All of the Shinies; I Must Become the Most Beloved Archaeonaut Ever

@BESW motivation complete, but it may be too big for a one-shot char :P

Hmm. I like it, but we can pare it down and keep some of it implied.
@Shalvenay How about I must learn the fate of the Demiurge?
Excellent. Thanks, @doppelgreener.

looks good

Now, while @Shalvenay names his character and sees if he wants to customise the concept aspect, we can start your PC, @Pixie!

Alrighty.

1:59 AM
Being by rolling 4d to find your bioform.

4d

...oh, wait. I skipped one bit. This'll be fast, I'm sorry.
@Shalvenay I've added comments explaining each aspect, and there's one more for you to fill in.
So, @Pixie, you also rolled Humanoid. If you find that boring, roll twice more and we'll pick the most fun.

man
2 humanoid

I'm going to roll twice more because "that's boring" was my first thought. >w>
4d 4d

2:02 AM

[squint] That's two more Humanoid.

......
one more?

[pokes dice roller]

Let's try again.

4d

2:03 AM

Mutant. That'll do.

Mutant! That's... basically, think X-Men.
Now we'll roll for stunts.
8d, please.

8d

Your first stunt is Brain Twister!
> Brain Twister (Clever): Using psychic energy, you can Cleverly attack an opponent’s mind—provided they have a mind to attack! If you succeed with style on this attack, you can discover an aspect of the target with one free invoke instead of taking the boost. In addition, you can never become Unarmed.
Would you like your second stunt to be another power, or a weapon?

2:06 AM
I think I'll go with another power.

Excellent choice.
> Super Strong (Forceful): Once per scene, when you attempt to Forcefully overcome a physical obstacle in your path by trying to breaking it, you can outcome surge the result. Whenever you use this stunt, place a Debris situation aspect on the scene with no free invoke.
"Outcome surge" means that you increase the level of success by one: from failure to tie, from tie to success, from success to success with style.

Ahh.

(This is an Umdaar-specific mechanic.)
Looking at your stunts, it seems like your PC would probably have Clever as her highest approach.
That sets her up as a mage or a bounty hunter:
Mage: +3 Clever;+2 Careful, Sneaky;+1 Flashy, Quick; +0 Forceful.
Bounty Hunter: +3 Clever; +2 Forceful, Quick; +1 Careful, Sneaky; +0 Flashy.
However, if you'd rather be Forceful +3 with Clever at +2, Battlemage is pretty cool.
Battlemage: +3 Forceful; +2 Clever, Flashy; +1 Sneaky, Quick; +0 Careful.

Hmm. I'm between mage and battlemage. [flips coin]
Battlemage.

Sweet.
Now, aspects.
I've put comments on each aspect slot in the sheet, explaining them.
You can customise your concept from its base mechanical description.
Your motivation, phrased as "I must...", is the reason you have this dangerous lifestyle exploring the Wild Lands for artefacts.
Your personal aspect is something about your personality, identity, signature item, or the like.
And your shared aspect describes your relationship with Shalv's character.
@Shalvenay Any thoughts on your personal aspect?

2:17 AM
@BESW still trying to figure it out -- this character is reminding me strongly of an existing char of mine, but I'm not sure if a systems aspect is acceptable in this game

Describe your concept.
@Pixie You okay?

well, the char this is reminding me of is my Khanid cyberknight-bowling-ball from EVE

@BESW Yes, thanks. I'm glancing over the section on motivations right now.

Okay!

alright, have an aspect

2:25 AM
Maybe "I must find an artifact worthy of my power."

@Shalvenay Hmm. How about Steelsplitter is a real knife?
@Pixie Nice and egotistical.

there we go

@BESW Exactly. xD

lol

While @Pixie is mulling over personal aspect and name, we'll start @Althis on a PC.
Do you have the fudge dice script, @Althis?

2:28 AM
Nope.
Where can I download it?

I was considering overlaying an existing character onto this, but I couldn't imagine her without wings, so I'm going in a different direction. That direction is apparently "full of herself." :P

Link's in the room description, upper right corner of the page.

Ok.
Now, to test it.
d6

How familiar are you with Fate? I can't recall.

2:31 AM
I've played and GMed it multiple times.
Is there a special Umdaar sheet?
Or are we just using a doc?

Nah, it's just Fate Accelerated. I'm using this doc.
Your stats are at the bottom.
We'll start by having you roll 4d6 to find your bioform (in D&D that'd be "race").

Ok.
I've never player FAE.
I hope it is not too different.

Biggest difference is in skills vs approaches, and we'll deal with that.
So, roll 4d6.

4d6

2:38 AM
That has you as a mutant: mostly a normal humanoid except you've got a couple weird powers. Kinda like the X-men.
If you find that boring, roll twice more and we'll pick the most fun of the three.

Mutants?
...
4d6

Robot!

and.
4d6

2:39 AM
That must be good.

Oh man. Cytyr.
> Cytyr: Waist-up Humanoid Cyborg; two legs of an animal from the Animal Kingdom Chart.

...
They just made that up.
But it is AWESOME!

Roll 5d6 to find out what your bottom half is.

Damn...
I knew it was too good to be true.
I am gonna end up as a dolphin or something...
5d6

2:44 AM
> Raptor: Deinonychus, Velociraptor, Oviraptor
Would you like to be a half-raptor cyborg?

What is even an Deinonychus?
Oh.
That.
Can I have feathers?

Sure!

And be bigger than a chicken.
Then I am in.

Oh, yeah. You're humanish sized.
Excellent! Lets roll some stunts for ya. 8d6, please.

8d6

2:48 AM

I think I actually have a reference somewhere here for how I want this guy to look.

> Frill or Mane (Flashy): You possess a frill, mane of hair, or markings that make you terrifying to behold. +2 when Flashily creating advantages to instill fear.
> Bite (Forceful): +2 when Forcefully attacking someone who’s bound or restricted, represented by an aspect like Wrestled to the Ground.
That's very appropriate!

Indeed.
So.

Would you rather focus on being Flashy, or Forceful?

I am not sure how those work.
Those are the approaches you mentioned, right?

2:50 AM
Approaches replace skills in FAE. Instead of describing what you're good at doing, as skills do, approaches describe how you're good at doing things.
Do you more often solve problems by drawing attention to yourself with style and panache, or by meeting things head-on with determination and force?

I will go with force.
But the mane is just too good.
I assume they are not mutually exclusive, right?

No, no. You'll have both.
But which approach you prefer influences the next step.

Then I will say I am forceful.

Umdaar packages approach rankings under the flavour of classes, and it looks like your raptorborgman wants to be a fighter.
Fighter: +3 Forceful; +2 Quick, Flashy; +1 Careful, Sneaky; +0 Clever.

What page can I find the others?

2:55 AM
13.
And you can always just assign approaches manually.
+3, +2, +2, +1, +1, +0.

I prefer Hunter.

Alrighty.
Then all that's left are aspects!
I've put comments on the sheet describing each aspect in broad terms.

Ok.
If you could go back to @Pixie for a moment.
I would like to finish reading the primer on umdaar first.

I'm done except for shared aspects, which we'll figure out together, I assume.

Okay, @Pixie and @Shalvenay. Shared aspects!
How do your characters relate to each other?
Umdaar suggests these kinds of interactions: sibling-like, parent/child-like, love/love triangle, and rivals.
The last time I ran Umdaar, we had a princess and her royal advisor.

3:01 AM
and a robot bounty hunter who was looking for them but fell in with them because thier interests aligned with his

Hey.

hrm...shared aspects.

As I envision her currently, Mara is confident to a fault, a generally upbeat person, and in pursuit of glory. I don't get the sense that she's truly anyone important, though. No royalty here.

Ok.
I think I've got the hang of this character.

@BESW that's a huge problem -- because I tend to loosely couple to teams IRL and with my characters ICly

3:06 AM
Basically, Edward was a tribesman until very recently the Masters attacked and enslaved his people, leaving him the only escapee.

If nothing's coming on shared aspects, we can leave them to discover through play.

Now he must find a way to overthrow the masters that rule their people and free them once again, through any means necessary.

Mara's not motivated to save the world, but she's likely enough to take to someone simply by being sufficiently impressed. "I like the cut of your jib!" etc. Being rather driven herself, she finds that level of dedication admirable.

My personal aspect is "My father's bow" because it reminds me of my purpose, as well as the teachings of my father on how to survive in this harsh world.

@Althis I like it.
@Pixie So, she probably admires Edward's determination?

3:10 AM
@BESW That's what I was thinking.

also, I will only be on for ~50 more minutes

Yeah, this is taking a bit long but that's what comes of not using actual pre-mades.

Seems like I would admire her power.

So a matter of mutual respect.

And Sirac might respect Edward's mission, seeing it as a miniature version of his own.

3:11 AM
Maybe she would be able to guide me to where I need to be to save my tribe.
I foresee some great clashes between Sirac and Edward.
Where one seeks the greater good, while Edward cannot look past the local issues.
Saving his people to name one.

Maybe Sirac is Teaching Edward to see the bigger picture.
Whether Edward wants to or not.

yeah

@BESW, should we make the Master that took my tribe?
Also, should we have more than one Shared Aspect?

@Althis Queen of the Dinosauroids, Master Appa-tax.
I think one each is okay.

@BESW Is that a thing in the book?
Or did you just make it up?

3:15 AM
@Althis Yup. Page 33, Appa-tax is the boss of the pre-made session's villain.

How convenient.

Alright, so we've got a general idea for our shared aspects even if we don't have them written down exactly yet.
That should be enough to start. We'll just do a quick scene.

Set the mood Master @BESW.

Take a moment to get settled and we'll start in a few minutes. I gotta grab a drink.
Are we ready? Sound off.

Ready.

3:24 AM
This unlikely group of archeonauts banded together to search for the Starblades of Su'ul, a set of five swords forged from the pieces of a legendary weapon called the Firerain Wheel. Master Appa-tax, Queen of the Dinosauroids, also seeks these blades. Her trusted general Kaji-Sa has already found one of the Starblades and is on the trail of another, deep in the untamed Wild Lands. Luckily, you managed to coerce information from one of her mercenaries about where she's heading: the Psycho-Jungle.
You're taking a shortcut through the Psycho-Jungle, hoping to head off Kaji-Sa and get to the Starblade before she does; her soldiers are going to be following the winding trail, while your small party can cut straight through the dense, dangerous jungle.
As you can see on the tracking sheet, the Psycho-Jungle is filled with Hallucinogenic Fog, and it has Vines and Vegetation Everywhere. Is there another aspect we think the jungle should have?

Hm...
What about some psychos?

Nothing coming to mind immediately.

I mean, it is in the name.
It might have been inhabited once.
And then something terrible happened, covering the whole land with fog.
Meanwhile, those who lived there remain.
Twisted, warped beyond life.
And absolutely mad.

Perhaps it's still got Dangerous old traps left by its previous inhabitants, hidden by the fog.

That sounds good.

3:30 AM
So, you're picking your way through the lethal, trackless jungle. What are each of you doing to help the group move as fast as possible without succumbing to the jungle's dangers?

I am using my experience as a journeyman hunter under my father.
(Using My Father's Bow.)

Are you making sure you're going in the right direction, or keeping an eye open for dangerous animals, or hiding the group's tracks, or...?
I'm pushing for something we can make an aspect about, is what's going on here.

Of course, the Steelsplitter cuts through mere vegetation rather quickly

I am keeping an eye out for traps.
Cause God knows there be "Dangerous old traps" in here!

Could Mara use her magic to blow the fog out of their vicinity?

3:35 AM
@Shalvenay Roll 4d6 and add Sirac's Quick modifier; you're creating an advantage to place a free invoke on your personal aspect. Difficulty is +0.

4d6+1
4d6

hrm. that's a +1 net?

@Althis Roll 4d6 and add Edward's Careful modifier; you're creating an advantage to place a free invoke on Dangerous old traps. Difficulty is +2.

4d6

3:37 AM

That is a very round 0.

@Pixie Hmm. That sounds reasonable. Is this a powerful wind, or a subtle breeze, or...?

Can I use my aspect for a reroll?

@BESW Probably occasional powerful bursts to clear the air.

@Althis Yes, you can spend a Fate point to invoke your father's bow for a re-roll. But I'd suggest instead using it for a +2.

3:38 AM
Oh yeah, the difficulty is already +2.
I do that instead.
Otherwise, we would surely fall to @BESW machinations.
I mean, the Jungle's machinations.

@Pixie Then roll 4d6 and add Mara's Forceful modifier to modify the situation aspect Hallucinogenic fog to say Thin hallucinogenic mist instead, and get a free invoke on it.

4d6

@Shalvenay You have a free invoke on your knife! That's good for a +2 on any roll where the knife is useful in this scene.

alrighty

3:41 AM
@Althis You tie. I'll give you the free invoke at the minor cost of foreshadowing: focused as he is on the inanimate threats of the jungle, Edward discounts the pair of glowing yellow eyes peering at him from a nearby thicket.

Probably just fireflies.

@Althis Yes, obviously.
The noise of the party's speedy movement through the jungle, and the periodic blasts of wind scaring birds up into the air, inevitably attract attention.
A sudden blast of blue lazer-fire lights up the shady clearing.

I immediately jump up a tree.

Mara, as the least obviously armed of the party, I'm going to be targeting you with this attack.

Do I need a test or do I succeed in not being seen?

3:47 AM
Two lazer-wolves burst out of the jungle on either side of the party. They'll get a single free attack (on Mara), and then Edward gets to go as he's got the highest Quick rating.

Alrighty. By the way, did I successfully modify the fog to mist and get the free invoke with the +2 above?

lol
more of these guys

@Pixie Oh, oops, I forgot to set a DC in the chat.
Yes, you did.
Mechanically, I'm treating this as a conflict with the wolves getting the first round due to surprise.
4d6

The lazer-wolves get a +2 on their attack against Mara. How does Mara defend against their tail-lazers, @Pixie?

3:50 AM
Mara, please remember to equip me with a tail laser as soon as possible.

@BESW Could I use my Brain Twister stunt to attack the wolves' minds, trying to make them miss?

Hmm. This is a defensive action, so you won't get the "discover an aspect" bonus (that's only when you're trying to inflict stress, which is an attack action)--but narratively, the stunt does give you permission to defend that way, so yeah. Roll a Clever defence to mess with the wolf's mind.

4d6

So a total of +2 there.

3:53 AM
That's a tie! The wolves are going to invoke their high concept as Laser-Gun-Wielding Wolf Robeasts to bring it up to +4 (that's one of my 3 Fate points for this scene).
@Pixie Would you like to use any of your Fate points to increase your roll?

"You puppies think you have a chance against me?" Going to invoke "I'll stop when I'm dead" to bring Mara's roll to a +4.

Nice.
I'm content to leave it at a tie; are you?

I am.

The lazer-wolves criss-cross the jungle with bright blue lines of light, but it's erratic and confused and they don't hit anything. However, trying to confuse two cyborg animals at once, on such short notice, gives Mara a Dull brain pain (boost, belonging to the GM).
@Althis! It's Edward's turn. I believe he's scrambling for a tree?

Indeed I am.
Trying to create an advantage.
Do I roll sneaky?

3:59 AM
I'll let you move one zone for free, treating the treetops as a zone above the jungle floor. If anyone was trying to stop you, I'd ask for a roll.
Instead, tell me what Edward does from up in the trees.
