@hbdgaf that sounds like you are the "key" person, that nothing moves without you around D:. I hate being one of those, since when things go wrong when I'm not there, guess who has to fix it?
or worse, figure out how other fixed it...

@Braiam It's one of those, you show up after 12 hours off and the first phrase out of your mouth is "REALLY?!?!?!"

Just discovered my account after about three or so years.

Q: Recover directory structure + files

Josh LevinsonBackground: I had a dual boot of Windows + Linux Mint. Mint didn't feel right to me, so I decided to install Ubuntu to replace Mint. I booted from a Ubuntu Live USB and started the installer. The installer asked me if I wanted to replace Linux Mint. I did, so I chose that option (big mistake). I...

@Seth Regarding this review: askubuntu.com/review/low-quality-posts/193607 he really did add winusb to ppa, so the answer should remain open because it is a good answer to the question.

@karel I would flag it to make it a comment of Mitch answer... wait, I did that d:

Hey all, quick question about stack exchange. I have a gsm modem and when I try to send a text message from it to my own number, It gives me CMS ERROR 21 "short message transfer rejected". I checked the pin, csq, cpms, and everything is fine. Should I ask this question on stackoverflow or serverfault?

@JohnMerlino where are you sending the message?

I am sending the message remotely using minicom on ubuntu server.

@Mateo I love recursion...

1:56 AM
the modem itself is a cinterion gsm modem
I ran this command:
AT+CGREG?
+CGREG: 0,0
Doesn't that mean its not registered?

@JohnMerlino no idea

2:16 AM
@Braiam any idea which stack site I should inquire about this?
Obviously not askubuntu. But I am wondering if stackoverflow or serverfault

@JohnMerlino has something remotely to do with source code or programing

8:03 AM
Are there any mods can help me here ?

8:21 AM
yes

8:49 AM

@Utkarsh can we move the discussion here?

yes
but my PC is having kernel panic, freezing
what abt that
why did this happen?'
should i reinstall ubuntu?

What did you do since you've last installed?
or did you have problem from the get go?

I did a lot of experiments
like playing with swap, softwares etc.

oh, lol

8:53 AM
but i am afraid that i will miss my debian

than yeah, re-installing should be ok, but if you did swap experiments you may have to re-partition as well, not sure what you did so...
if you install ubuntu on it's own partition nothing should happen to your debian installation

but i saw kernel panic on both ubuntu and debian
also, deiban also freezes

the Grand unified Bootloader should be able to identify both

what?
can you tell me that how could i mix a 30gb partition and 10gb partition?
@ReutSharabani ?

you have two partitions and you want one partition?

8:56 AM
yea

or you have like 6 partitions and you want to merge two of them?

yes its true i have 4 partitoins and want to merge any two
so that i have only 2 partiton
@ReutSharabani ?
?

can you can you run
df -h
and sudo fdisk -l

wait

(that's lowercase L)

8:59 AM
sorry
but i am not on that PC

well, I can outline what you need to do, but I urge you to backup all your data first
if you generally wanna work with partitions the easy way you can use "gparted" which should be available on your ubuntu

i cant do the commands as my system having kernel panic

you can't boot into debian \ ubuntu?

no
?
oh no

this can have multiple sources, ranging from hardware problems to unstable kernels or even bad configurations

9:03 AM
i am just 13 thats why i cant understand this please tell in simple words

your hardware (disks, even cooling system) may be broken
your partitions may also be set incorrectly
you can try and boot from a "live disk" (I doubt you have USB support on an old system
)
this is how you do it:

tell,

@Utkarsh: I thought you fixed it yesterday

@Utkarsh, please try and boot from a live disk. once you do that, you can inspect your system more throughly and less painfully

9:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek no, this is happening again

from the information you gave me? Reinstalling would be a very good idea at this point

@JourneymanGeek really? but i will miss my debian

@Utkarsh: get a camera, take a photo of the error message, and update the question

@JourneymanGeek, he can first make a backup of his files using a live disk, so I'm always for it

@Utkarsh: you can just reinstall ubuntu without touching debian very carefully

9:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek but how?

@ReutSharabani: heh, he's been having this issue a while
@Utkarsh very carefully

I'm pretty sure ubuntu actually lays out partition information on the installation process so this shouldn't be a problem

(use manual partition selection)

@JourneymanGeek i have ubuntu on sda5 deibna on sda1
sorry its debian

@Utkarsh: I just told you what to do ;p

9:07 AM
you can't boot into any of them, right?

yes
@ReutSharabani okay so i will reinstall

I'd put my money on hardware failure if this is an ongoing issue, but re-install and hope for the best
2

@JourneymanGeek :D I remember
@ReutSharabani okay

and as I've suggested, try the live disk, I use it often when fixing other PCs to backup all information first

@ReutSharabani: He dosen't seem to have any really bad smart errors...
waaaaaait

9:09 AM
@ReutSharabani yes you are right

@Utkarsh: did I tell you to run a smart test?

@JourneymanGeek yes, i did it yesterday
@JourneymanGeek forgot?

and it passed?
yeah

yes

sorry, I have exams ;p

9:09 AM
no problem

how did you do it?
you said you can't boot into any OS

I'm currently deleting my system analysis storage for Stratergic management storage

@ReutSharabani actually it was booting yesterday
@JourneymanGeek confusing

@ReutSharabani: @Utkarsh isn't very good at describing his issues ;p

@JourneymanGeek i am 13

9:10 AM
ok, I have to go now, but Google is your friend in these cases. you are not the only one with kernel panics :P

@ReutSharabani you are right! but why fear when journeyman is here?

Age dosen't matter

lol

9:11 AM
cause I could ignore you!

?

Please google "Ubuntu live cd"
use it

@ReutSharabani i know how to make it
@ReutSharabani but the problem is that i will miss debian

boot from a live cd to narrow down options

and what if i do something worng?

9:12 AM
use it only to fix your system
it's only to boot your system, it doesn't change anything

no it cant be fixed
i did a lot fo experiments

well, if you're set on re-install than just do it :)
i'm going now, good luck

okay i am also starting my work
bye

basically, you need to use the xp cd to get in and repair the boot - unless he wiped it (xp files on usb? something wrong there), so yeah.... although some have the opposite opinion that because we helped get ubuntu on we need to help them get windows back and fix it

@Mateo He's trying to boot the XP installer from USB
that's what he's trying to do.
he SHOULD be burning the XP ISO to a CD/DVD so it works right though

@ThomasW. which shouldn't work

@Mateo (read my last message before you @ highlighted my response)

Josev KingI know nothing at all about Linux, and I desperately need to get my laptop back up and running again with Windows, how do I remove Ubuntu?

as a dupe of this:

6:45 PM
how's the one that lives at Netherlands? @rizwind?

hello all...

hello

just curious if it would be worth discussing what would go better on help.ubuntu.com/community vs AskUbuntu - we are getting a flurry of activity from wiki folks that want to clean it up and looking for guidance / input so we can ensure the two resources work well together

Yep.
Are we talking about moving some of the wiki articles to Ask Ubuntu or the kind?

hiya @cprofitt
bleh i can't type to save my life today

6:51 PM
hey @ThomasW.

@cprofitt I think we have to tread carefully here with wording if we move things around between AU and the Wiki... if we have something moved to Ask Ubuntu that doesn't fit within the Q/A style that's a problem
because while Ask ubuntu has wiki-like qualities, it's not as editable as the wiki
evidenced by the permissions system

@jokerdino I am not sure that this point... we need to review them. I think we need to get a clear guideline for what belongs in both places

@cprofitt there's another aspect to take into consideration. editing permissions
not sure who has edit permissions everywhere

@ThomasW. I agree... not sure we move anything... but going forward as part of our guide we might want to suggest that some things are more AskUbuntu friendly vs Community Help

but if some things from help.u.c/community move to Ask Ubuntu the doc teams will need 2k+ rep on the site to edit the stuff
agreed.

6:53 PM
Are we talking about converting some of the top canonical q's to community docs?

I am on both teams... I have 2k+

@ThomasW. Or we can make it community wiki and bring it down to 100 rep

@jokerdino still need people to bother getting onto AU and getting rep
which would be the prereq to anything

ofcourse

again at this time it is more about having the Wiki team know what is a good fit for AskUbuntu then moving any content
we are looking at updating the guide pages and I think adding some information on that page that helps community members choose the appropriate place for their contribution would be good.

6:56 PM
@Mateo probably about help.ubuntu.com/community

I think specific problem/solution things work good here, where it would be too specific for the other

@Mateoyes, it is about help.ubuntu.com/community

I agree with @Mateo, cprofitt. Problem/Solution bugs, and general questions about things that can be answered precisely are going to work here...

some pointers that should be kept:

1. It has to be phrased in the form of a jeopardy. It should be a real question/answer.
2. It should be maintained and not obsoleted over time.

^ that
@jokerdino with the exception of the two bug doc questions i wrote/answered here. Those may be a little old, but I even put "Refer to this link for the latest data, as this answer may not be most up to date"
speaking of which i need to see where Alberto went with the bug docs...
brb

6:58 PM
@jokerdino yeah... one of the wiki issues is maintaining over time... too many items are left unmaintained

@karel Hmm. I'm not sure that exactly classifies as an answer, but I've removed my comment for now. It does make the question unreproducable (if that's a word)

@cprofitt Lets take this as a 100% given for any medium used, though.
@cprofitt @JorgeCastro even mentioned on IRC on a question here that had an answer that didn't work, and it was a pretty-heavily-traveled question.
it was out of date AND incomplete

but if we track which of the pages are being maintained by wiki team, we could have a general idea which ones are not maintained. Relatively easy to clean up the cruft in AskUbuntu.

@ThomasW. - I have a good idea what fits, but I was hoping to involve the more active AskUbuntu folks in the discussion with the wiki admins

we're going to see that on both sides.

7:00 PM
We should probably have a canonical question for those types of issues.

@ThomasW. yep -- no matter what medium things will get out of date.

@cprofitt that works.

indeed.
@cprofitt ah okay, well, we need to define "active users" then
and get us all into the same location

but only if both the sides are open minded and dont have a decision made yet

in particular adding a section to the WikiGuide linked earlier that tells people about AskUbuntu as another resource
this was mostly to make you guys aware of the conversation

7:01 PM
Although I think it is more important to have wiki stuff updated

@Mateo I agree... and happy we are getting some activity of people eager to assist with that

@cprofitt is there a ML discussion anywhere on this?
purely curious

there are a great many pages that are out of date (going back to Dapper)
@ThomasW. on the doc team mailing list

wow, some that old huh

@cprofitt publicly-archived ML or no?

7:03 PM
@ThomasW. there should be an archive... let me go get a link

@cprofitt thanks.

a great deal of activity over things the last seven days or so

indeed...

7:05 PM
is it the "A Though on Redundancy of Community Wiki and Other Forms of Support" thread?

that is one of the threads
that is the main one most likely
there were some people even questioning the redundancy of help.ubuntu.com/comunity given askubuntu.com existing

@cprofitt I think we need to define "redundancy" though.

I think redundancy is ok, as long as there is a purpose in mind, there is a different goal in the community wiki right?

in what sense are we seeing redundancy?

7:07 PM
And in what sense are you considering the two to be redundant? I see the community docs, personally, as "outdated" and "hard to search"

they are seeing redundancy... I think we are past that though

Some of the top questions/subjects, will be repeated many times over, but the display and format of the information targets different users

@AvinashRaj not if it has an upvoted/accepted answer

@ThomasW. I do not consider them redundant.. but some others did in one of the threads. I think we are beyond that now.

@Braiam see the @Seth's comment.

7:11 PM
@AvinashRaj I still don't see a reason why remove it...

No, you shouldn't remove it, just close it.
You should only remove bad or really stupid things, which this is neither.

@Seth ok

@cprofitt I really consider that sometimes users are being push to interactive support instead of a documentation, and that is what makes everybody efforts going thin...

It was a good question for a time, but it serves no purpose now since the problem has been fixed on the dev end

@Braiam I agree that seems to be the case some times

7:13 PM
@AvinashRaj btw, you know you can vote to close/reopen your own questions now?

@Seth i throw a close vote on it.

Okay :)

@cprofitt having glanced through the thread, I am not sure how Ask Ubuntu fits in. You know, this platform is not meant as a replacement for Wiki. It incorporates certain features but not really a good replacement.

@Seth did i loose any reputations?

@AvinashRaj No, you would only lose reputation if you delete it (which you can't do anyway, since it has a good answer)
@jokerdino Could you close and merge this? askubuntu.com/questions/204428/…
It has some good answers the master is lacking.

7:18 PM
user image
2
^^ That's what we are

Actually, wait a minute.

@jokerdino I agree. I think the concern, from some, was that some wiki articles in the past were more questions than documentation. I think the hope is to ensure we make the difference clear to contributors. I know some wiki articles are about how to deal with issues with wireless cards... and those types of issues may be better on AskUbuntu since there are so many variations
general help might work on the wiki, but adding content for multiple wireless cards likely not.

@cprofitt hm yeah. Those kinds are potentially more suitable for Ask Ubuntu.

Nvm on the merge. All the important points are there already.

@Seth yay
I'll get some sleep. Cya

7:21 PM
unless a major manufacture has a certain problem that everyone runs into...

@jokerdino Cya!

that should likely include some information on askubuntu on that page.

@Mateo bugs are no good for AU format ;), if some kind of fix should come from the upstream AU will close it, but applying the fix is another issue

@Seth Hey Seth have you found a way to get dodge windows for 13.10?

@Andrew I'm not sure, since I don't use it ;P
Got two answers though:
1
A: How do I configure the launcher to "dodge windows"?

TrailRider13.10 This is possible 13.10, at least it tested well in my VM. The older scripts do not work as you(Seth) have discovered. However the newer scripts that worked for 12.10 and 13.04 work for 13.10. The site webupd8.org has the instructions. As is stated, the instructions are for 12.10 and 13....

Both seem to cover the same thing

@Seth since you ask it on my question

7:25 PM
So.. It would appear it sorta works, but it is buggy.

@Seth dah, That why I don't use it

Yeah. I bountied it because we were getting duplicate questions wanting answers for 13.10.
Oh heya @jrg

@Seth dodge-maximized-window works perfect in ubuntu 13.10.i tried it.

jrg
@Mateo I would say that right now, it hasn't been updated in forever, so no.

@Seth I miss it, I don't understand their choice of removing it!

jrg
7:27 PM
I really should spend this month working on it to make it awesome.

@AvinashRaj No if you go to another workspace the launcher will be autohide but no window is maximized.

@jrg cool, didn't want to promote more till you were ready

So.. someone want to explain what exactly dodge windows is? I still don't entirely understand what it does.. Haven't really cared, but since I bountied the question I suppose I should know :P

jrg
@Seth yo!

@jokerdino yep

7:29 PM
@Seth Dodge windows means if a window goes over the launcher it hides

@Seth they removed the code instead of just put a switch deactivating it, which was retarded...

jrg
Hiya @cprofitt..

you move the window towards the launcher and it runs away

Agreed

@Andrew agreed?

7:29 PM
hello @jrg

@Braiam Yep

Ah. Seems like a pretty useful feature.

@jokerdino take a looks at the following list -- help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWireless

I think there were some difficult "problems" with it, compiz - configuration settings, all the small things

@Seth That is why I started using ubuntu over Windows. I like the full screen experince and able to see the system tray at the time, I miss it!

7:32 PM
@Andrew so you want it to be visible with a window in full screen?

@Mateo no, the entire reason was because it "confused new users" (aka UX)

@Mateo I want my app to be full screen and I want to also see the system tray, that was quient to unity but they remove it!

@Andrew what do you mean by "system tray"

@Mateo On the unity desktop it is on the top panel on the right side with the me menu and the time, the ....
@Mateo Do you understand now?

are we still talking about dodge windows?

7:36 PM
yep
@Braiam Nonsence Don't have it as deflat than!
We need to petition Canonical_Ltd to get it back

could you hook the the hide mode toggling to when you maximize a app? askubuntu.com/questions/41241/…

@Mateo but it is buggy
@Mateo Don't worry about it, I have look though every options!
Is any one on?

@Andrew Please don't ask to ask; if you simply ask your actual question, we will help you if we know the answer or can help you find it. This is much faster and simpler than asking if it's OK to ask. As a rule, it is always OK to ask in this channel. Please go ahead.

@Andrew we never left...

Good should we Petition Canonical Ltd. To try to get dodge windows back? I want a simple Yes or No Because I am wrighting one up on change.org

7:49 PM
I don't think there is any reason, it is buggy because there are too many things involved with detecting windows, I could see use for "hide launcher when maximized" but bringing back the dodge windows as it was is a dead end

But how was it buggy?
I have use it for over 2 years and only once or 2x it didn't move

@Andrew talking about the new...
10 mins ago, by Andrew
@Mateo but it is buggy

in 11.04-12.04
@Mateo No the scripes file that chances the lancher to "never" to "auto-hiide"

8:10 PM
just too many variables and window types for it to be maintained by canonical, if someone hacks it back that is fine but it has moved beyond the point of them putting it back like it was

@Braiam are you active in #ubuntu on irc too? ("Don't ask to ask" sounds familiar :-))

@guntbert nah, I was, but I found a hassle fire up the irc client login freenode, and ask the bot for the factoid, so... I just copied allquixotic chatbot johncavil message, since he copied it from #ubuntu channel

where are my fonts stored on my hdd?
I need the ttf files...

8:53 PM
@Alvar locate ttf FTW!

@Braiam too slow already found it, nautilus ftw.

all that work to document his video, and I think you just need to hit F1 to start the camera (mine looks the same till you hit F1 then it starts camera) askubuntu.com/questions/385602/camdesk-doesnt-work

@Mateo that's a freaking bug!
stupid bug, but still a bug...
> TabError: inconsistent use of tabs and spaces in indentation
@Seth fix it! ^
