12:00 AM
@hbdgaf Yeah, I know :)
We probably wont' know for a while..

@Seth want to start a campain to remove the darn ?

I'm sure you won't like my lack of patriotism.. but I'm done dealing with tags that moderators should [get] remove[d].
It's too frustrating D:

Does balefire exist on SE?

balefire?

Robert Jordan reference. Completely destroying something's existence throughout its entire history, so the people that touched it over time are somewhat damaged by the removal since something that never existed is eating at their perception of the universe.

12:06 AM
SE does have it, but only CMs and devs can actually do it.
and they only accept requests from moderators for the most part.
(tbh I'm a little burned trying to deal with these tags, so for now, I'm just done)

I wasn't suggesting it. I meant it as more of a joke. In the Robert Jordan universe for Wheel of Time, it was like - oh no, don't do that it, forbidden. So the hero and villain must both do it, obviously.

oh ok. lol to the second part.

@Oli @jokerdino @fossfreedom @jrg @bruno @rolandixor can we get this 3 tags burminated? the community will spend too much time going through all the questions that have it just to remove it meta.askubuntu.com/questions/7465/…

is there a captcha i'm unaware of?

I couldn't help but comment this:

Q: Installation problem Ubuntu 13.10

user2376848When I do I remove the drive C but does not allow one to remove the driver C. While the drive can choose to delete it but it does not indicate the drive configuration to remove the problem. Where is it? See the photo below.

@JourneymanGeek it has no hat. i'm disappointed.

@hbdgaf: yeah, I'll fix t hat later.

@karel good catch, but still, I don't see how is Ubuntu fault :(

@Braiam Maybe not, but someone could tell him that it would be easier to install Ubuntu if he started from scratch in a new virtual machine, so I voted to leave the question open anyway.

2:15 AM
@Braiam The question has been put on hold as unclear. I want to answer it with my "new VM in VBox" answer, so I nominated to reopen it.

2:26 AM
@ThomasW. Hi

... I'm regretting a statement i made before...
yesterday, by Thomas W.
@jokerdino but i am by nature an evil bloodsucking vindictive person who rains down evil upon bad people...
@karel Hello.

LoT you're not bloodsucking or vindictive.

@hbdgaf you haven't seen me as a chat moderator on IRC
has a reputation for being evil there

IRC is slowly dying.
At least, I'd like to think it is.

@NathanOsman 'cept it isn't
:P

2:40 AM
I use it less.

I can't tell you how many OSS projects have a "problem? irc channel blah blah on freenode" or their own server or something else

@karel well, that is for voters to decide ;)

Don't we have elections coming up soon here on AU?

if you want you can add a comment for the voters about how is OP problem solved

jrg
Potentially.

2:41 AM
@jrg Potentially?

jrg
They don't tell us about them
they just happen

I thought last time we came to the conclusion they were annual?
I think we had this discussion before.

@NathanOsman we are the 3rd site with most questions/day, I'm not surprised we get SO get 15mods, math and AU 12 mods
and 3rd in visits too :(

jrg
i think they might be annual at this point.
but i dunno

Anyway, I'm looking forward to asking those awkward open-ended questions that make the candidates pause for a few moments trying to come up with some elaborate speech that passively covers the "idea" behind the question.

jrg
2:45 AM
i don't have it circled on my calendar.
yet.

...you know - the kind interviewers love to ask to make potential job candidates sweat :P

if the interviewer makes you sweat, you either weren't the right candidate or you're interviewing for the wrong company.

jrg
it was interesting
I've only interviewed for a job twice.
the job i have right now was more of they came to me because of work i was doing elsewhere
and said "Yo. Notbad.jpg. Wanna job?"
3

i've been told i interview well. i've only ever made it to the table once and failed to take the job.

jrg
so i didn't so much have an interview as I had a out-of-the-blue offer. But, I wish they had bothered with the formality, i feel odd that I'm the only person on the team that wasn't original, that wasn't interviewed.
(everyone after me has been interviewed)

2:52 AM
at least you know they like you...

jrg
@hbdgaf see, that is one of the best/worst "problems" to have...?

@jrg all the pressure?

i wouldn't complain about being a favorite. it makes you some enemies, but would you have wanted them as friends anyway?

jrg
it's actually kind of interesting
i have been given the projects that we all voted on as "most likely to fail", because they like me.
so far i've pulled them all off except one.
and i still have a chance at that. :P
so it sounds like I have a lot of goodwill capital to burn...

you should have a winning charlie sheen poster somewhere

jrg
2:55 AM
@hbdgaf that's my xmas gift to my side of the office.

srsly?

jrg
Yup. I will put that up.

I've found that bosses tend to like me because I can deliver on a deadline, but that it burns me out delivering on increasing deadlines...because I haven't failed yet. So, I wind up leaving.

sometimes one have to say "no" ;)

jrg
I tend to be very straightforward.
I take my internal estimate, multiple by 2-3, and then I say "This is when it will be ready".
They want it sooner? I trim things until it'll fit.
Means I surprise everyone.

2:59 AM
Fair enough to both. I don't say no though. It's one of those, if you're a push me until I break companies, I don't need to be working here.

jrg
Yes.
I always am pessimistic about the amount of time I will spend on something.
unless it's release day
at which point I try to be as accurate as I can

I always say "This is soonest. These are the features I want to put in. These are the features I must have. This is probable. This is latest."
It's usually a push to production at soonest though.
:(

well, cya guys, Morpheus awaits...

at least somebody's knocking. just follow the white rabbit and see how it turns out

My estimates seem to be consistently out by a factor of 2.5x.
Of course, you know the rule:
> "Projects always take twice as long as you think - even if you take this rule into account."

I have a page that doesn't look right in IE using a hodge-podge of CSS hacks.
Lo and behold - it passes the W3C validator.
This means one of two things:
- IE isn't following the standard
- I'm doing something that results in undefined behavior
You'd think vertically centering a stupid <div> on the page would be easy.

It isn't.

Q: grub-probe error while installing to ZFS root with separate boot

sumit guptaI tried to set up Arch Linux on a ZFS root following the wiki guide. Except, to avoid some partitioning, I outsourced boot to an ext4-formatted USB stick. Maybe this change has implications I am not aware of? Pool creation and pacstrap install worked fine, then I changed root into the destination...

What makes this even weirder is that my copy of IE 11 renders it correctly. But nobody else's does.
Goes to the corner and cries softly...
I have IE 10 on another machine here... time for a test.

@Braiam if the bootloader can mount a filesystem on a file on NTFS.. but why the hassle?
Its basically what Wubi does with the known limitations.

i can't able to catch your point

@AvinashRaj personally dont like adding those xkcd "comics" to answers. Dont really improve the answer in anyway.

@fossfreedom not in my answer i want that comic in that question only.

equally applies - doesnt improve the question either.

Q: Is it bad practice to use your real name online?

blade19899On some accounts I use my real name on-line(G+/fb/wiki/Personal blog), others(Q&A/Gaming) I use an alias. My question is: Security and privacy wise, what can people do with my real name? What are the harm, and dangers of using your real name on-line.

I told my boss what my account was on askubuntu, so, for half of the week i couldn't go to askubuntu, cause he makes good use of my 'activity' tab. So, i went to security.se. Not bad for a first Q there!

He's probably still there.
but the question i have is why do you care if he sees your activity on Ask Ubuntu?

@ThomasW. cause then he could monitor me. How much time i' m on askubuntu. You know instead of working!

and he can track how long you're on how?
I'm on 24/7, if only to deal with my SE inbox
i don't actually do anything though
'cept the occasional chatmoderation because 10k+ SE chat rep
me, i procrastinated when there was no work.
when there was work i multitasked
evidenced by me still meeting the deadlines for things :P
'course, the state government is a little bit more relaxed that way, so long as you get your work done all's good :P

ahah. Yeah. but, you can still see how much revisions you make, commets you left, reviews, posts accepts
sooo, he might not like that my 0 A.D. Q/A has 30+ revisions
instead of 30 revisions of my assignments.

(1) revisions - rare, and usually minor grammar changes
(2) comments - rare, and usually pro-forma that go with a close vote
(3) reviews - only sorta visibleish to some extent
(4) post accepts - um, what? Where are "post accepts" shown? Edit accepts fall under "review" and AFAIK there's no moderation queues.

6:31 PM
already got a slight comments for him
my bad typo: posts, accepts*

heh
most of what i do nowadays here is maintenance
or flagging

@ThomasW. @blade19899 i had 20 gb unallocated space on the extended partition. How do i move that space out of the extended partition

and flagging is usually accompanied by a downvote on the thing, and that takes all of 5 seconds :P
@AvinashRaj ask a question on Ask Ubuntu rather than highlighting two random users who might not be able to help?
@blade19899 i actually use my ask ubuntu activity in helping others as evidence of my ability to do helpdesk
i actually reference it on my resume

@AvinashRaj, use gparted. At the top of my head

@blade19899 they still have to resize the extended partition and in doing so any logical partitions inside the extended partition could get corrupted

6:33 PM
thats something i did on a IT job website

how do i do it with gparted

then they have to move the partitions around in order to get the space where they want it on the disk (if they want to expand / to use it)
@AvinashRaj there's a thousand questions and answers on how to work with partitions and gparted

@AvinashRaj Best to search this on askubuntu

k thanx

or ask your own question and get it marked as a dupe
(which i said first, ask your question on AskUbuntu rather than just ask in the chat)
@blade19899 Ask Ubuntu is one of the primary contributions i did for my Ubuntu Member status
and on my resume i even have my Ubuntu Member status listed
now my primary work is bugs and bugs triage, and some package maintenance (minor)
but meh
still shows i'm actively involved in the IT community
(also helps my linux skillset too :P)

6:37 PM
@ThomasW., thanks for the leason on how askubuntu can benefit me.

but that's for me, my work is helpdesk right now (sysadmin maybe if I get my certs)
yawn
now, facebook, on the other hand...
that's a different story

facebook. you know what, you helped me out a bit, so, am not even gonna comment on that :P

where did you learn math?

@Braiam ex 6?

you don't know that "ex" makes the 6 "extremally" greater than 7 ¬_¬

a little bit "extra" on 6 is a bit less extra than 7?
