Q: Is it bad practice to use your real name online?

blade19899On some accounts I use my real name on-line(G+/fb/wiki/Personal blog), others(Q&A/Gaming) I use an alias. My question is: Security and privacy wise, what can people do with my real name? What are the harm, and dangers of using your real name on-line.

Boom 37+ upvotes
awh yeah

If people are so dim that they need to use an internet reputation metric that involves social media...I don't really want to work there anyway.

Too tired to fully grasp the concept of your comment. But, i just got bored at work, so, decided to ask something.

It wasn't directed at you, it was directed at the nature of the question. If an employer thinks my personal beliefs have anything to do with how I do my job, they already think so little of me and my ability to separate life and work that I don't really want to work for them
@blade19899 ^^ clarification for the tired.

Thanks! And thats what i think also!
If i doe a great job, and am a Cosplayer(am not) outside of the office. Should that really matter to my boss. As long as i do my job the best i can, then it shouldn't matter

Is that a monochrome icon I see? Another design decision I like and have said everything should be from the gate. FG-Color, BG-Color, possibly accent color...or gradient. Simple is beautiful.

@ReutSharabani, find a job you love and you never work a day on your life.
- confusious

If you're built such that your job wears on you or the job applies more pressure than you're prepared to enjoy you lose both though.
^^ happened to me. It's why I work at WalMart in NC instead of an un-named company in Chicago.

I work at McDonald's as a side job :\

I wasn't arguing, just presenting the counterpoint.

I know, but, tired.

Q: Bad edit made to my question about dmraid

djeikybThis is the question in question. Dima edited my question which prompted a reopen. Then dima answered the new version of the question. Problem is, Dima's edit is wildly different from the question I asked. Dima basically says "duh, add the uuid of the device to your fstab". This is a fantastic ...

@djeikyb - check my comment. see i it helps
WOOT! chili for the next 2 weeks is made. meal preparation done in the most efficient fashion possible.

@hbdgaf thanks for the suggestion. in my case, boot wasn't being held up, it was just that the devices didn't show up

@djeikyb you maybe want to rollback your question, no?

i rolled back the edit and answered it
is it not showing up for you?

Oh, well then something bailed. If everything were designed perfectly, a bail would have returned false... and the wrapper would have seen that. And the nowait option would then have tried to mount it again. Until pure awesome followed. Then, it's hard to expect anything to be designed perfectly.

(i did the answer first then the rollback, but it was within thirty seconds of each other)

1:14 AM
maybe I just updated the answer, now I see the revisions and it's there
@djeikyb just removing the tag ;) I don't think is relevant

@hbdgaf i'm shocked that i didn't think back then to just add an upstart job thing to automate the dmraid command
@Braiam cool deal, yeah, the tag isn't that useful, especially since my method of solution is so generic

interpret context. back then upstart was a little alien for everyone if it was that long ago

mm... mutter is being wishiwashi...

i don't know anyone irl that isn't wishywashy
other than myself of course.

i do hope @Dima posts a question/answer. it really does seem useful info to have here in general
@hbdgaf well, whatever init script was around at the time to hack on

1:22 AM
upstart was around some time ago, and people didn't feel as right with it... so they didn't write scripts that otherwise would have been written b/c change is painful and they knew init scripts would eventually be deprecated. so instead of writing deprecated awesome, they elected not to write at all

haha, unfortunately, just two months before that question i recommended using upstart to enable wake-on-lan every boot: askubuntu.com/a/47923/8515

KERNEL PANIC
!!!!!!!!!!!!

48 mins ago, by fossfreedom
Utkarsh - when you are back - please edit your question with a good photo of the kernel panic. It should give a clue of what is going on.

add that to your question

@Utkarsh - your picture is low res - but I think it says you've got ATA issues - that looks like a failing hard-disk.

YES BUT WHAT TO DO? IT HAPPEND RAPIDLY WHILE I RUN FSCK COMMAND

12:07 PM
a failing hard-disk is just that - it is about to die

@Utkarsh: boot into a livedisk, install gsmartcontrol and see what it has to say.
If any tab is red, chances are you need a new hard disk
and... that picture is hard to read please help people help you.

and this goes beyond being a help vampire, this is actively wasting people's time

@JourneymanGeek I didn't make it up. That's exactly what he said last time.

@JourneymanGeek Banworthy?

I'm not a mod ;p
He did earn an ignore from me though

12:48 PM
@BRA @AMI @JOKE @JOUR actually, i wasnt able to take the screenshot of that kernel panic but this image matches with the real problem that occurs on my PC. No Problem if you ignore me! god is listening everything
@JourneymanGeek i cant understand, if i need a new HDD. Can you please tell me whether I REALLY need it
?
@JourneymanGeek no i m not wasting your time

ahh, you did something someone asked you to
bad news is? yeah
Do you still have the system running? Can you look at attributes and tell me if there's any in pink?
@Utkarsh: see above

yea system is running but still this is happening often
and no nothing is pink

there's got to be something in pink
you are having errors in data
at the very least you have bad clusters

?
i am just 13

...
your age matters not.
Only the willingness to learn

12:59 PM
okay
but

old master once say, you can put more water into an empty pot. But if it has a hole, all that water is wasted.

.

uncorrectable error in data means there's got to be smart errors
go look again
Do not tell me there are none. There are.

so you mean that i have to change my HDD?

Yes you do.

1:01 PM
but i can't as i am poor
can't i repair this one?

You can run linux off a thumb drive
maybe

will it?

but you can't trust it.

wouldnt it be slow?

better than not working at all.
Here's the thing. life means compromises.
I'm trying to see how best we can minimise the pain
and to do that, I need to know exactly how bad your HDD is

1:02 PM
okay thanks
wait
can you take my system on remote?

I don't want to

then how would i tell you the condition of my HDD

I want to teach you to fish. Not hand you a fish

okay
please tell me how to?
how could i tell you the condition of my HDD? are there any tools?
@JourneymanGeek

I just told you what tool and where to look

1:05 PM
but i cant see anything pink

hm
wait
did you run gsmartcontrol with sudo?

no, i just went to dash and typed "gsmart..."

protip
almost all diagnostic tools need root access
do it again as sudo

okay

this is an example of a drive with bad sectors
(Yeah, I am still running it, though not as a boot drive)

1:07 PM
but why are you putting your data on risk?

good news? You probably do not need a new HDD
Bad news?
I have no idea what's wrong

hmmmm....

that dosen't explain the errors in the error log tho

and one thing more,

as for the data?

1:09 PM
this happened since i started to shut down my pc from mains without shutting down properly

Its all backed up or transient
hm
and your system fscked no?

i ran this command but still

i also dual boot
?

you need to adjust it a bit (sudo su, not su -) but that will force your drive to check
if that dosen't work? back up and reformat
I'm out of ideas at this point

1:11 PM
okay dear
i will try this all
if still, i will reformat
thanks again
and one thing more, you are just AWESOME!!! I thought that you are a MEAN-type-human but you are really helpful! and sorry if i talked to you badly or rudely as i am not from US and know less english thats why some people feel that i am rude.
bye

@Utkarsh he's not human... he's a dog...

@Braiam i had a doubt. My usb drive has two partitions dev/sdb1/ and sdb2 ,if we run sudo grub-install /dev/sdb ,where was the grub installed.Whether in sdb1 or sdb2.

neither
its installed before either of them

@AvinashRaj I have no freaking idea what you are talking about, and even if I had I probably wouldn't know the answer either

@AvinashRaj: more specifically its stored in the boot sector
so, its in neither
A master boot record (MBR) is a special type of boot sector at the very beginning of partitioned computer mass storage devices like fixed disks or removable drives intended for use with IBM PC-compatible systems and beyond. The concept of MBRs was publicly introduced in 1983 with PC DOS 2.0. The MBR holds the information on how the logical partitions, containing file systems, are organized on that medium. Besides that, the MBR also contains executable code to function as a loader for the installed operating system — usually by passing control over to the loader's second stage, or i...
^^^^ read it and be enlightened.

@JourneymanGeek did we can able to see that?i think no.

er...
I think the sentance structure was a little off there
@AvinashRaj: You generally can't access that, but dd can copy the mbr into an image
then, I donno, you can peek at it with a hex editor or something
(but don't. Its a path that leads to madness. The next thing you know, you will be disassembling software and writing no-op sleds)

1:43 PM
@JourneymanGeek is that possible to make multiboot linux usb in manual way

@JourneymanGeek hey! you repaired my PC! now its working perfectly
but i do improper shutdown. would anyhting happen to my PC? i mean software issues or hardware issues?

2:01 PM
@Utkarsh: oh, just data loss
unless there's a power spike
@AvinashRaj: I've never tried

@JourneymanGeek does the internal hard-disk be seperated as dev/sda and sdb?

>_>
I do not understand

dupe to mergelist master or close at OT? askubuntu.com/questions/387458/…

I asked an op,he says i had 500 gb internal hard-disk.But gparted shows 250 gb as /dev/sda and 250gb as /dev/sdb.Is that happens?

thats... not right

@Utkarsh: could you update that question? I'll post an answer

@AvinashRaj wat? the only way i could see that happening is if it were some kind of external raid device that is enumerating wrong.

@hbdgaf In this askubuntu.com/questions/387369/windows-8-ubuntu-in-grub creating menuentry for windows in grub will work or not

@AvinashRaj it doesn't matter how many MBRs you install grub on. that's not the problem. even with no MBR magic updategrub should find windows...i've never EVER had windows on an MBR to get it booting.

@AvinashRaj: there's two disks.

2:23 PM
maybe he needs to unmount the windows disk before running update-grub && grub-install?

blkid might be useful here as would lshw

@Wilf that comment was just random, you posted a link about antivirus for linux when I was talking about viruses on windows can't harm a Linux platform. Why did you even write that comment? It wasn't constructive in any way! it was just a statement that there is antivirus for Linux. But you didn't explain why you need it...

@hbdgaf ot, we need to set the example ;)

@Braiam after i saw 3 as OT i jumped on board. i did add a link to the master question as a comment though

@hbdgaf is that possible to make multiboot linux usb in manual way

2:39 PM
It's always possible, but it doesn't fix whatever the problem is.
Watch it turn out to be a UEFI windows install and the grub detection scripts were smart enough not to list it instead of listing it and dropping them at a black screen.

so flag it...
reboot made it work means he did the .bashrc fix or the .profile fix and just had to log out and log back in to get it applied to his XSession probably.

@Alvar The OP was asking if they could get this Smart security thing for Linux - apparently the might be able to...

@AvinashRaj: also, I'd note that people can actually read the main site. If I know an answer to something, I would answer ;p

@JourneymanGeek if he posted "i rebooted my pc then it works" as answer. It was considered as an answer.

2:51 PM
@AvinashRaj: its kind of a boring answer

Yes. This is true. I'm not sure where it falls. That's why we have mods. To determine if deletion on request is because of feeling dumb and not rebooting after modifying environment variables or if the answer was already floating around the site and a second question really wasn't necessary.

yup
but commenting for mod attention is less effective than flagging

i had already flagged it ;)
so some friends are interested in rtl-sdr. i'm debating on trying to implement a police scanner. seems like an open source $30 police scanner beats the pants off of a $300 blinkenbox walkie talkie looking thing.
the problem there is testing... it's hard to test radio something that doesn't have constant chatter.

@hbdgaf i created two fat32 partitions in my usb drive and follow this askubuntu.com/questions/372607/… to make bootable usb, if i followed the same on the another fat32 partition it works or not.How do i install grub2 on usb-drive to make the both to boot.Is that possible?plz give me any suggestions.

i don't follow what you're trying to accomplish. i'm not writing a manual adding entry to grub tutorial. if you want to add custom grub menu entries, there's already a wiki entry or ten for that.

3:59 PM
@Braiam I didn't answer that question beacuse I didn't understand the question fully, like what is the OP actually asking for?
And if that is what he's asking for then it's a dupe..

@Alvar he's asking it he can install his windows antivirus in linux, if ubuntu allows it. I'm just answering that you shouldn't install a windows antivirus but a linux antivirus ;)
... that if he's paranoid enough

@Braiam if he's paranoid enough eh shouldn't use internet.... viruses aren't as scary as hackers! ;)

A recommendation of other products might be nice. Say someone who has a linux client? I mean clam is the free solution, but as much as I think AV is retarded... Bitdefender and F-Secure(that licenses their engine and writes their own definitions) both have linux clients if memory serves(on both points).

I used avast last time, it work pretty well. but If I remember correctly it's gone now. That was searching for Windows viruses though..

@Mateo Dunno, but maybe you could fix this? meta.askubuntu.com/questions/7773/community-promotion-ads-2014/…

5:37 PM
I have a question: if I have dual boot: Ubuntu 13.10 (65GB harddrive) and other Ubuntu version (435 GB harddrive), is true that because the hard drive is smaller Ubuntu 13.10 runs faster than the other one?
I had Ubuntu 13.10 as single os on my machine, and it was slower.
Now it is a lot faster!
Why?

12
A: Does storage capacity affect hard drive performance?

Oskar DuvebornA generalisation isn't useful, but mostly when talking similar models/same series I'd say the larger drive would be faster due to higher data density in some way (be it more platters and heads, or just denser platters). The bigger model would likely be newer as well and could benefit from firmwa...

@Braiam Exactly my situation. But I didn't understand the answer. Is it yes or no?

@Seth yeah, probably, I think it was a scaling problem - I'll redo it on the mac

partition size doesn't directly affect performance. fragmentation could, as could being at the end of the long list of present files...although not as largely as you are indicating. it's more likely gui responsiveness streamlining. just saying.
i think they're putting a lot of effort in to making unity less slow. i haven't noticed much performance difference across xubuntu installs for the last 3 releases except for breaking the audio applet on x64

6:04 PM
@イオニカビザウ basically, the bigger the disk the faster, the nearest to the start of the disk the faster too
@hbdgaf yeah, they are trying to make that unity doesn't require opengl anymore... gnome3 doesn't require HWA, so mmv

6:23 PM
@Seth done, made it better overall :)

big data question:
What do you call it when a distributed database uses two copies of the same data on different nodes to be more robust?
sorry wrong chatroom

@Utkarsh I have a dieing hard-drive on my Ubuntu laptop, I don't do anything important on it and Ubuntu doesn't move things randomly into black-holes like windows does, so I'll let it die a natural death. So If anything is important on there then yes - get it off fast and buy a new one.

well that was kind of anti-climactic. at least it works for you though

I couldn't even get sideloading to work on Windows.
I had to boot up Ubuntu and use the copy of ADB I had installed there.
Windows can't find a driver for the Nexus 5 when booted in recovery mode.

that's odd...or not. i always just used adb/linux/ssh to push images. no sideloading for me. does multirom support the nexus5?
