I thank you.

excoriate rips the skin off, so that's not quite right.

Yeow.
I like exceed. Walter, pay the man.

evulse is to pluck or pull out, tear away.

I wonder why.
etymonline doesn't know.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Do you have Google fiber? I heard KC has it.
@crl Nice.

3:12 AM
@Rob How many feet do you have?

4:04 AM
@tchrist Around 2.5. It's hip-deep in most places.

4:29 AM
Around two and a half is so much more manageably human than 762.
It was 75 here today.
Makes me feel like gardening or something seasonally stupid.
This never happens in Wisconsin.
Two years ago I got 7 feet between March 1st and May 1st. Spring is our snowiest season. Now is usually a dry spell.
I have decided that astronomical seasons are bullshit and that we should go back to the old way. The solstice and equinoxes mark the midpoint of the season not the start point.

I can't remember when you even started.

I switched from Moq to Mokk. Spelled it Finnish style to indicate that I meant business.

with a knife and a bottle of vodka

Prettty much. I used reflection.

Overwriting readonly fields and all kind of ugly.

yes. that is a terrible thing to do. why are you doing that?

9:00 AM
To avoid writing 100+ interfaces and huge Moq-mocks
It is only to be used in tests so the problem is not as huge as the ugly.

ah. fair enough

Could probably have designed this better but can't think of how at the moment.

story of my life :D

Matt the mean mod.
Name of your bio?

You can I don't pronounce much :)

@MattЭллен Hello Matt. My mum is working till late again today, sigh.

gots to pay dem bills
there is a coffee stack exchange now

Do you have something to say to me that will encourage me? I just thought I would ask you to say something special.

What do you need encouragement to do?
I will see if I can think of something

Hmm, I need (1) to make sense of the past (2) to be strong in the present (3) to get well and live my dreams in the future.

you hear that @aediaλ? Coffee

11:11 AM
Every year I don't get well yet, I feel even more upset, because (1) becomes harder and (3) becomes harder.
That is why I have been thinking and thinking and thinking of what I have to do now.
I try to talk to myself and explain things to myself, and that helps keep me calm.

What if the past doesn't make sense? Could you see a way to accepting that it happened anyway?

I think the part of the past that doesn't make sense the most is that part I ask why I am taking such a long time, and you have provided some answers, but I think sometimes I am looking for better answers.
Do you have some part of the past you cannot understand as well?

it is difficult to move forwards if you are always looking back.
@ABeautifulMind not exactly, but I accept that the sense of them is not going to be clear

@MattЭллен OK. But I think sometimes we have to look back to move forwards.
There was no writing exercise in the writers room yesterday.

@ABeautifulMind yes. I think there is a difference between understanding the past and making it make sense. I can't ever know someone's motivation for how they behaved, and I will remember how I behaved with a positive bias, so full understanding is not possible.

Jez
11:26 AM
@MattЭллен coffee, lol

@Jez yes. exactly.

Hot dogs
need a Q&A site on hot dogs

I'd be more interested in that :D

We already have Cerb no?

Jez
he's not hot

11:28 AM
ok

He lives in Hades, so he's at least warm!

We could vote about it.

> The house of Hades is a labyrinth of dark, cold, and joyless halls, surrounded by locked gates and guarded by the hellhound Cerberus.
I guess it's not hot in Hades

And if he was so hot he would heat the place.

@JohanLarsson I think maybe you look like Mr Shiny. Both of you have the same hairstyle. =)

11:32 AM
@JohanLarsson true

@ABeautifulMind :)

@MattЭллен Do you have a recent pic of yourself? I am wondering what you look now...

not easily accessible
I look pretty much the same, though. my beard's a bit longer

What does 'Solution wide inspections' = off for a project mean? (R# thing)

12:05 PM
solution wide inspections would be inspections done across the whole solution
so if you turn it off for a project then you exclude that project from solution wide inspection
so I guess it would grey out the "inspect" menu option, etc., for things in that project

12:33 PM
This transcript is good. It helps me make sense of the past in some ways, when I see what I said years ago.
@MattЭллен Will you be working as a programmer for the rest of your life?

12:48 PM
@ABeautifulMind I don't know. certainly for the foreseeable future

And how is your snow?
@tchrist Why did you add the elliptical uses of shall? The question is about should only.
Then you'd have to add the entire article shall.

4:02 PM
I had free beancurd for dinner again @matt.

jolly good

Another 6" and I'd have to learn to hibernate.

this is what minecraft is for: teaching you how to survive a snow deluge

I've been surviving with Far Cry 4.

4:34 PM
I've been surviving without any games.

user116848
Me too.

user116848
@KitFox Hey :-)

@KitFox Hi! Good to see you, you are my angel.

Let's not overstate things.

OK.
Matt just left this chat, I guess to go home.
It's 1 am here, I will go to bed at 2 am.

I have been really sick, and I'm trying to ease back into work, but work is not cooperating.

4:58 PM
What are you sick with?

I had bronchitis and then developed some kind of secondary infection.

Might be related to the snow.

Well, it's germs.

But cold weather plays a part?

@ABeautifulMind It usually does not.

5:00 PM
I don't usually fall physically sick these days.

Maybe. I think it could be related to exposure to woodsmoke, which is something I don't relish.

mmm woodsmoke. One of my favourite smells

I switched between asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia in my childhood. I usually had one of the three.

I have been using Ubuntu MATE 14.04 ever since it came out in Nov.
It came out after Ubuntu MATE 14.10.
I will read Socrates as So Crates and Democrates as Demo Crates.
What will people say about that?

5:07 PM
@ABeautifulMind Probably nothing, since they can't hear you.

OK. I once took a philosophy class where we read some Socrates stuff.
@KitFox You should try to get an MC and rest at home for a few days.

@ABeautifulMind Master of Ceremonies?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Here it commonly means Medical Certificate.

I've already done that.

MC King means someone who often takes MC to skip work.

5:15 PM
@Cerb I added the elliptics whose citations used should.

Someone emailed me two days ago saying 'If you have time, I need help'. That was the last I heard of him.
He did not say what help he needed.

Hard times in Nigeria these days.

He is American, not Nigerian, lol.

Q: Which comes first? Grammar or language?

user1589188I always have the impression grammar is just a tool to help studying and learning a language, i.e. it is a scientific tool invented for a language after the language has existed. But to think of it how most of the constructions of sentences fit the grammar rules, I am also inclined to think a la...

Why isn't this migrated yet?

Because the plane is not ready.
Maybe we can take the ship instead.
@Robusto By the way, you only need 3k more to reach 100k, so I believe it will happen this year.
@Robusto Now it's closed as too broad?

5:33 PM
I think it should have been closed as OT (which I voted). It's not that broad: which came first, a or b? is pretty straightforward and the accepted answer gives a good overview. But it's not about English so it doesn't belong here.

Not about English? Hmm...
I had this idea of having just one SE site for all topics. Then people can use filters or tags to see what questions they want.
That's much better than having questions on a particular topic able to be asked on multiple sites.
Good night. I will see some of you in my dreams.

Mods are slacking

5:59 PM
@Robusto what haven't the community closed it yet?

@MattЭллен It should be migrated, not closed. It's a good question, just not an ELU question.

@Robusto if it's off topic, it should be closed and flagged for migration
if it's on topic, it should stay :D

It's on-topic at Linguistics.SE.

oh, I see it's closed
it asks about English specifically. I could remove that part, but then the OP wouldn't find out what they want to know

I could ask a question about physics that involves English only . . .
@MattЭллен None of the answers address English specifically, btw. You just don't want to put in the work to migrate the question. Admit it.

Trying to write this in a rush It’s likely I’ll come up with mush But what’s important Is don’t say I can’t Because all my dreams you will crush

that's not the same.
"does physics work differently in English" would be closer
but I'm merely passing the time, because I'm not going to deal with it tomorrow. I'm about to go out
so mabye another mod will migrate
has it been flagged?

Why did you even want this job?

to delete other people's comments

I see.
Well, it's flagged now.

cool. I'm sure one of the more diligent mods will look after it

6:09 PM
I don't think those exist.
"Diligent" and "mod" is a pairing that belongs on Skeptics.SE or one of the others.

:-o I think Andrew would disagree. anyway, toodle pip

@MattЭллен So where is Andrew then?

6:30 PM
@MattЭллен Yoichi Oishi surely would.

Hello everyone
Is it correct Fetch GitHub orgnizations members in a fancy way?
(or should it be organization members?)

I'm not sure what you're trying to say there.
What's the whole sentence?
@IonicăBizău Are you meaning organizations that are part of GitHub?

8:01 PM
@KitFox There are organization accounts on GitHub. They have members.
Is it correct organizations members or organization members?

So GitHub's organizations' members?

I would rephrase it as members of GitHub organizations to make it easier to follow.
Otherwise, probably GitHub organizations' members.

Yes, it's much better. Thanks!

no problem

8:04 PM
+30 from me :p

Oh thanks. There's no need to, though.
You can find the duplicate on EL&U and upvote that.

That's how I say thanks to someone who helps me on the chat. :-)

Hi
I'm wondering if someone instantly falls in love (e.g. Romeo), what does that show about his character?

He's young and full of hormones.

I don't think haste because he's not hurrying in this context

8:09 PM
Or really shallow.

@KitFox Interesting interpretation
@KitFox What do you suggest by 'shallow'?
"not exhibiting, requiring, or capable of serious thought"?

How so? If you fall in love instantly, then the only thing you have had a chance to experience is the other person's outward appearance. That's a terrifically shallow thing to be in love with.
Not only that, but it is their appearance at one particular time in one particular place.
In short, you have no ability to know that person, and are in reality stroking your own vanity.
Or in the case of being young, you are really horny and making the classic mistake of confusing sexual urges with "love".

@KitFox Let me ask you... "What is love?"
;)

@KitFox Ok, I'll be a little more specific: "What gives rise to love between partners?"
Isn't it simply admiration?
btw that's a nice beat :D

8:17 PM
@TimTimmy No.

Why would you want to marry someone then?
-> key decisive action-taking

I am married already.

sorry, just a mis-wording shall I say
-> (possibly) appearance

I got married because I wanted to share a life with someone, raise a family with someone, &c.
It would be really stupid to make that kind of decision based on a person's physical appearance one night of their life.
Don't you agree.

Of course, (I'm not Romeo, am I?)

8:20 PM
I don't know.

I don't think that I'm a figurative character set in a love tragedy
I'll be dead in a day or so...

You asked about that kind of character and I gave you my opinion.

@KitFox The features of love I presented to you were idealised, teenage notions of love and you gave more humane features

Yes.

Wow, thanks Kitfox you just helped me to understand Romeo's character even better!

8:23 PM
I think we do children a disservice by teaching them that an erection is a good basis for a lasting relationship.
No wonder young people get so confused.
But that's not really what Romeo and Juliet is about anyway.

Your features were originally at the back of my mind, it's just that teenagers rarely realise that and only remember it only till later life
So Romeo fails to see the humane features of love, such as company and help.

Well, in the case of Shakespeare, you can be assured that it was merely a plot device to push forward the allegory.

@KitFox It was nice talking with you, thanks a lot for your time and effort!

Sure thing.

Cheerio

9:08 PM
What's the opposite of "at least"? "fishes of at worse 15cm" sounds with a negative connotation
found "at most" and "at best" as good candidates

You mean fish that shouldn't be longer than 15cm?

@crl At most.

Fish no longer than 15 cm. "Fishes" if you are talking about different species of fish.

@crl "At best" would make a value judgment about the fish.

@KitFox yes
