Measuring coffee is hard.

Actually, measuring coffee is easy. But coffee manufacturers treat customers like idiots and turn the measurement into a mystery.

Especially when you use beans.

If you measure by weight, it's really easy even from beans.

Oh. I don't find it easy, but I haven't tried it by weight.

Bodum has a simple recipe: 1 part beans to 20 parts water, by weight. There are other recipes out there, ranging from 1:30 (Folgers) to as high as 1:10.

But these simple recipes get turned into volume measurements and special scoops because Americans are assumed to be handicapped. We can't measure by weight, and we can't do math, etc.

Isn't Folgers primarily Cafe robusta? Ick.

Whereas in a metric system, with a scale, it's really easy. Got a 1000 mL press? Weigh out 50 grams of coffee, grind and brew it.

I should just put the scale next to the coffee maker.

But for the benefit of Americans, Bodum says it's an "eight cup" press meaning eight European 1/8 liter cups, gives you a chart of how many rounded tablespoons to add per "cup", and throws in a special "Bodum scoop" which is a rounded tablespoon that they hope when full contains about 6.25 grams of coarse ground coffee, and they don't tell you any of their numbers. It's like we're babies.

Just scoop, trust us.
