12:04 AM
Good evening @matt.

hi!
I'm off to bed now :D

user174558
Good night.

12:17 AM
@Jasper What? I just made that up. Are you some sort of time-thinker?
@MattE.Эллен that is a poor excuse

user174558
@Mitch It's mentioned in a youtube video.

Oh
maybe it's me then

user174558
Edwin Ashworth likes to downvote my answers commenting that I am answering questions too trivial for the site.

user174558
I can understand his actions, but I love to provide answers to trivial questions.

user174558
People are free to downvote or delete my posts as well.

12:20 AM
@Jasper when i first showed up at ELU it would bother me when people answered obviously closable questions. BUt if it's a good answer then so what.

user174558
@Mitch The trivial questions are sometimes not so trivial, and the nontrivial questions are sometimes not so nontrivial, to the point where I think ELL and ELU should be one and not two.

yeah, I know what you mean.
it seems sorta silly to have both

user174558
How many users of ELU are linguists, etymologists and serious enthusiasts? Almost none.

user174558
It's time to have a reality check.

12:43 AM
there were some at the beginning
what's an etymologist? That's not a thing.
maybe a lexicographer.
but undeniable that people are enthusiasts.

2 hours later…
2:22 AM
@Jasper Hi! I am an enthusiast, though I might possibly err on the side of purism. It doesn't seem that there are many purists on EL&U.
Then again, I haven't contributed very much too EL&U.

2:45 AM
@tchrist Your profile seems to indicate that you are the "Owner of these rooms: EL&U chat room... " What does that mean?

@KaiMaxfield Nothing much, actually. I mean, I have owner privileges for ELU chat, but because I'm also a moderator, I automatically get that. I stick around here a lot, which is why I was made a room owner long before I became a moderator.

Oh cool!

3:02 AM
As per site etiquette, can I seek opinions about my recently posted answers? Of course I think that my answers are OK, but I'd like some critiquing from colleagues to make sure my head is really screwed on straight.

2 hours later…
4:55 AM
@RegDwigнt I was still in my bed could be part of the reason. :-)

7:33 AM
@KaiMaxfield Yes, just use common sense, don't try too hard to follow rules. Rules are made by fallible men and change over time. You won't be arrested for breaking them!

user174558
7:52 AM
@DamkerngT. Thai horror movies are the scariest.

9:26 AM
@Mitch tnx buddy

1 hour later…
10:28 AM
@RegDwigнt OMG I noticed that too and was just as appalled.
Childish would be a euphemism!
It's a different culture fo shoa.
@RegDwigнt In that case, you probably mean "fuck you, ELL".
@RegDwigнt I suppose they really don't want any accidents inside the building.
@RegDwigнt Hey, they have an emergency ladder, they should stop whining.
@RegDwigнt This tells me enough about Russian culture.
@RegDwigнt Umm Fleisch macht Fleisch, and then the cat bites off your penis?

@Jasper Do you especially like any of them?
BTW, ghosts in movies are sort of like superheroes, don't you think? They can "blink" to anywhere instantly, they can walk through wall, they can move objects without touching them, and so on.
Hi, @Cerberus!

Q: The correct usage of commas when writing about your locaation

user1864592This: I live in London, England but we can work blah blah blah or this: I live in London, England, but we can work blah blah blah

user174558
3 silly comments here but no answer provided to a perfectly good question.

user174558
I no longer like the tone of this site.

user174558
I dislike non-experts parading as experts.

@Jasper Hi, Jasper. Why do you think the comments are silly?
How many questions do you think have been asked about placing a comma after a location or before a conjunction.
What makes you think the question is a perfectly good question? Just because you think so?

1:05 PM
@DamkerngT. but their primary superpower is the ability to scare you. That's all. They can hardly do anything else.
@Jasper totally agreed, but to be devils advocate, open/crowd sourcing is intended to break the obscurantist guild by allowing much lower barriers to entry.
I am extremely annoyed by wiktionary (annoyances with Wikipedia are well covered)

user174558
I never use Wiktionary, but I do read Wikipedia often, to get a first look at a subject.

People who don't have any depth of knowledge or understanding are producing content
Like the cultural revolution, making farmers into surgeons

@Mitch Not always true. Wikipedia and Wiktionary are getting better. Some entries on Wiktionary are even better than Oxford or Merriam-Webster.

@Jasper Wikipedia is ok as a first glance
@Rathony I'm making a generalization. Actually I'm having a hard time thinking of examples of yours though

You can look up a few words in both Oxford and Wiktionary at the same time and compare them.

1:13 PM
I can give MW the benefit of the doubt, because I imagine they simplify definitions for web presentation. Wiktionary is coming from the other direction, trying to augment, starting from the most parsimonious personal experience

@Jasper I don't think you are familiar with the rules and guidelines of this community, but your answer to the question is not enough. The OP might be asking if a comma is needed before "but".
@Jasper And don't forget we have English Language Learners Stack Exchange where those OPs belong.
@Mitch I can't tell which is better definitely, but I feel Wiktionary is getting better.

@Rathony sure the progress in wiktionary is much more transparent (anyone can do it themselves easily). But that's not a comparison of actual quality. I am just complaining personally that when I am referred to wiktionary, the definition is usually deficient (missing nuances, missing alternate definitions, outright misleading defs)
Transparent means I could imagine and check progress but that's it. Not that quality is in fact improving

@Mitch I sometimes feel that, too. But there are some definitions that Oxford or MW don't have as they are not updated that often.

For a dictionary, the process using non experts to create expert rules is not scalable

I believe there's got to be editors for Wiktionary, but I don't think they have the same expertise.

1:26 PM
@Rathony because of web technology, I'm not so sure that online versions of dictionaries are not updated continuously
@Rathony the Wikipedia model suggests that but no guarantee that they are as involved as even the stackexchange moderators. And that comparison makes me feel that wiktionary can't be as good as SE and we both understand the state of quality here (many individual examples of greatness but on the whole...not exactly grammar girl or William Safire even)

@Mitch Some ELU answers are as imperfect as Wiktionary or Wikipedia articles.
ELU has become a homework site, too.
Where can I place a comma? Is the comma necessary?
How can I thank someone for having me?

Some -> Many ->? most?
become? The level of outright HW hasn't changed. (Noticeable but small)

1:47 PM
Morning.
Y'all need to be more aggressive in closing questions that show no research and have no content other than "title says it all" kind of stuff.

user174558
Morning @kit. It's Fries Day.

Hullo, pal.

2:03 PM
Hullo @Pal

user174558
Hallo is German and Hola is Spanish, interesting.

Outeresting
Where is "hullo" from?

user174558
Hullo is from Fox.

Lies!
I am the hulloer.

user174558
2:09 PM
Today, I answered 3 closed questions, LOL.

\o

@KitZ.Fox Hello KitZFox. Did you see this question? Same question asked before by the same OP. english.stackexchange.com/questions/313026/…
@KitZ.Fox Closing those questions is one thing and allowing an answer to them is another.
@KitZ.Fox Dupe we missed 4 months ago. english.stackexchange.com/questions/280868/…

user174558
There is no need to repeatedly ping a mod unless it is extremely urgent.

@Jasper What's the matter with you?

He's helping to explain how to not poke the fox.

user174558
2:19 PM
Let me explain why I said the 3 comments were silly. It is not true that you put a comma whenever you pause and don't when you don't pause. Although there is a lot of information online on commas, most of them are confusing and incomplete. Finally, some comments add no content to the site but make fun of the asker.

What comment made fun of the OP?
Are you referring to my comment?
What makes you think your answer is the correct one in terms of placing a comma?

user174558
Sorry, I do not wish to converse with you anymore.

Good. Don't call someone's comment which was intended to make the question better asked silly. I would not do that in a non-private chat room.
And don't answer a closable question.

user174558
Some people think a question should be closed, while others do not. That is why there are votes.

user174558
If everyone thought the same way, there is no need for votes.

2:24 PM
The question was closed by two votes. That means the question is worthless.

user174558
Now why did I choose to provide an answer to that comma question? Because the 3 comments did nothing to help the asker. Some were even wrong.

We are not even sure what the OP is asking.

user174558
Some people are not sure what the question is asking, while others are sure.

Don't feed the bear. That's our policy.

user174558
That is not a bear. That is a human being.

2:25 PM
Don't feed a lazy human being, then. That's a metaphor.

Build a man a fire, he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire, he's warm for the rest of his life.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's the most inspirational thing on SE I see which is nothing more than a sentence.
No one's complying to it.

@Jasper It was a good answer.

user174558
Maybe SE should have the same design for all the sites, and let the users choose from a number of themes when they log in, like gmail.

2:49 PM
@Jasper Eww
You've got a point though.
I think they didn't do that because the main audience of the main site -- programmers -- just write up a style sheet for that.
SE sites aren't private thingies though.
It's like saying FB should have a customized layout.
So I'm saying I don't disagree with the idea of providing more transparency but I also don't like the idea of a million appeals to meta. — MετάEd 22 hours ago
Not really @MετάEd; people are usually too scared to flood meta with their posts.
Or too apathetic.

Mostly apathetic or clueless. I don't think scared factors in.

hi @KitZ.Fox :D

@KitZ.Fox Then we'll factor it in. (/¯◡ ‿ ◡)/¯ ~ ┻━┻

@MattE.Эллен Hi.

@Jasper Sure, but there's a difference between answering everything you find and checking first whether it's closable or not.
Random comic time BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ

3:22 PM
@KitZ.Fox I will gladly close crap questions... but won't that be viewed as unwelcoming to newcomers? Just looking for authoritative corroboration.
@Jasper Is that why we all love Friday?
@Rathony haha. technically they're kinda the same thing here.
@KitZ.Fox Or the bear. Did you see Revenant? Don't even look at the bear.

@Mitch I don't care.
@Mitch I haven't seen it.

@Rathony Don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs.
Unless of course she asks.
That would just be polite then
even if she's doing it deliberately to see how well you can teach.
Egg sucking is a lost art.
@KitZ.Fox Nice! goes to close crap questions
@KitZ.Fox Me neither. But all the advertisements show Leonardo looking at a bear, then being mauled.
As most all of what I know about people and bears is from movies, what I learn from that is 'Don't mess with the bear'

Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.
And sometimes it is Mother Russia.
I feel like the bear got me today.

But my inner 13 year old really wants to visit a bear that is behind a very strong iron bar fence so that I can poke him just a little with a stick, just to see what would happen.
@KitZ.Fox bears gotta eat too

@IͶΔ Is the peer review process already broken? Because what the question proposes is to break it.

3:37 PM
I think a statement that indicates how the question gets reopened is a good idea. "After you have edited your question, it will automatically enter a queue to be reviewed for re-opening." Or something.
In my opinion, that is sufficient. If the question doesn't get re-opened and the OP cares, they will naturally post on Meta. The OP knows that in order for it to be considered for re-opening, it needs to be edited first.
That's really all that needs conveying.

I think wikipedia will slowly ossify to a point of official encyclopedia only because it's the only one people use and because there will slowly be only a bunch of old editors with no new ones, that is, it is only a cultural artifact that people use at one small stretch of time. Like MySpace.

I forgot all about MySpace.

I thought Facebook was going to slowly disappear because teenagers started to not use it because their parents kept trying to 'friend' them and that was so embarrassing.
@KitZ.Fox I never knew it the first time.
But now I've realized that FaceBook is set to become the 'operating system' that everyone uses (news, tweets, email, web pages, etc)

@Mitch Wikipedia is now a search engine

4:03 PM
It slices! It dices! It even makes Bill Gates cry!

@DeltaEscher ?? Now?

@Mitch An official chrome search engine

Again, whatever it is you're calling 'search engine', is this a new thing?

Yes. It is the successor to the steam locomotive.

Is it better than monorail?

4:15 PM
flips through diagrams
it's bettern a poke in the eye with a sharp stick

so's a poke in the eye with a blunt stick

it says so right here points at figure
@MattE.Эллен that's not as bad as with a sharp stick, but point taken.
in the eye

@DeltaEscher The standard Chrome search engines are Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, AOL, and DuckDuckGo.

@DeltaEscher You're making the IS-A/HAS-A mistake
In knowledge representation, object-oriented programming and design (see object oriented program architecture), is-a (is_a or is a) is a subsumption relationship between abstractions (e.g. types, classes), where one class A is a subclass of another class B (and so B is a superclass of A). In other words, type A is a subtype of type B when A’s specification implies B’s specification. That is, any object (or class) that satisfies A’s specification also satisfies B’s specification, because B’s specification is weaker. The is-a relationship is to be contrasted with the has-a (has_a or has a) relationship...
In database design, object-oriented programming and design (see object oriented program architecture), has-a (has_a or has a) is a composition relationship where one object (often called the constituted object, or part/constituent/member object) "belongs to" (is part or member of) another object (called the composite type), and behaves according to the rules of ownership. In simple words, has-a relationship in an object is called a member field of an object. Multiple has-a relationships will combine to form a possessive hierarchy. This is to be contrasted with an is-a (is_a or is a) relationship...

is-a has-a shoulda

4:19 PM
@MετάEd Now Wikipedia is also an omnibox search engine
Could-A Should-A Would-A

So I'm going to a Girls Night Out for work. I have no idea how I am expected to behave.
I hate this kind of thing.
I'm not sure why I agreed to go.

Pikachu, bottom left, leading a squadron of X-wings on an attack on the Death Star's weak spot.
Also, Vader's TIE being destroyed.

4:35 PM
Nice. My boys would dig that.
Pika!

So pokemon. I've always pronounced it "po kay mon". But my son, and so many others, pronounce it "pokey mon"

@KitZ.Fox "it'll be fun!"
@KitZ.Fox be yourself. But not too much. Hmm... Maybe you should consider being someone else.
Pikachu
Everyone likes Pikachu
Not very articulate though

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Pokey!

Communicates through a single word, and electric shocks.

@Mitch All the Poké only say their names.

4:42 PM
Wha? Sounds like 'to mock a mockingbird'
Smullyan

So I just watched a video that talks about the pronunciation. I guess the issue is this: the official pronunciation is like "pokaymon". But English makes it hard to prounce the "ay" vowel in an unstressed position, so people mishear it as "ee" or mis-say it as "uh".
So which is less wrong? the ee sound of "key", or the ustressed schwa that English demands?

I say pokuhmon

@KitZ.Fox Drinks with people from work tends to descend into shop talk, mostly complaining about the higher ups. At least that what happened with me.

We tend to drop the 'mon' and just shout "POKEE!"

@MattE.Эллен or gossip about clients or other cow-orkers
@KitZ.Fox it should then at least be POKAY like café

4:47 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 true. complain that sales people always oversell

@DeltaEscher Web sites can register themselves to Chrome as custom search engines. That may be what you are seeing.

@MattE.Эллен They should just call them oversales

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh. I think of it as a tonal notation, not an accent.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 "why did you promise them this?"

@KitZ.Fox Good chance you are expected to behave like yourself.

4:48 PM
@MετάEd Why would they want that?

@KitZ.Fox Same reason that the rest of us do. We like you.

I don't like me today.
But thank you.

@KitZ.Fox We're our own worst critics.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Sold for... 14 million dollars!

pocket monsters!

4:55 PM
And there's us. Analog monsters.

mind = blown

@KitZ.Fox b/c?

pokemon ~ pocket monsters. never thought of that before.

Ah. Digimon = digital monsters.

@MattE.Эллен "It should be trivial to implement!"

4:57 PM
Philemon = intellectual monsters.

Monday — monster day

Cinnamon = cookie monsters.
Cacodemon = chocolate monsters.
Persimmon = Iranian monsters.

Monty Hall - word to your mother.

And here I was thinking that mon ~ man.

Montreal = Monster shade of blue
@KitZ.Fox aye mon

4:59 PM
@KitZ.Fox Well, yes. Ask Dr Jekyll.

Pokemon = Thorny Monsters

@KitZ.Fox Or Frankenstein's monster.

Montessori = Italian time stretching monsters.

Mon Ami = Monster Friend

Monotheism = monster gods

5:03 PM
tch I keep getting this YouTube ad -- "I struggle with bipolar depression...and it's hard." Something about that statement makes me angry.

@KitZ.Fox It isn't hard living with it
It's hard to struggle with it

@KitZ.Fox what do you think it is?

It feels like it's diminishing the illness or something. Assuming that most people think that bipolar depression is something that's easy to handle.
I can't put my finger on it.
But also like Delta said. Struggles are hard by definition. It sounds dumb to put those sentences together like that.

yeah, quite the tautology

5:20 PM
@MετάEd How so? I just read it as writing more pages of FAQ that users won't read.

I read the FAQ

Yeah that's what they all say.

No really.
Which FAQ? The chat one?
I've read that time and time again because I suck at using the link format

it's hard enough already without that.

I love vexillology

I love it too, but you should maximize the damage.
What's good in mass-pinging if I dismiss them anyway?

I have to ping you once in every room you're in

Not effective enough.

I'm just not evil enough

Strategies, STRATEGIES

5:33 PM
I do it as a joke
Not as a horrible thing

@IͶΔ It proposes going around it instead of through it. Going to meta (or to chat) instead of letting the review process work.

@MετάEd O_O
Lemme reread that thing

@Mitch Not trying hard enough is a very common judgment that people make when they haven't personally had to struggle with the same thing, or something similar.

@MετάEd They should lie on their sickbed harder
PUT MORE EFFORT INTO BEING DEBILITATED

@IͶΔ I am reacting not just to the initial question but also to people's suggestions in comments and so on.

5:36 PM
@Lawrence I agree with Rathony. If there's going to be a change to the notice simply let the user know the question will be reopened if a post-edit peer review leads to enough reopen votes. — MετάEd yesterday
Aha

@DeltaEscher Yeah, there is some good satire floating around, showing how ridiculous people sound if their advice to depressed people were applied to people with a broken leg.

> a single meta 'question' with each appeal taking the form of an 'answer'.
nonononononononononononono. NO! NO! NO! NONONONOOOOOOOO!
I never pay enough attention. :/

@IͶΔ Appeals are for when the process isn't working.

@DeltaEscher You can just keep re-editing a ping message. Over and over and over again and again. It's less spammy for the chat room. But it pings each time.

Heh, if they posted on meta.SE the question would've stood on -15 now.
At least.

5:38 PM
It is true that posting to meta is an appropriate appeal. But we don't want the initial explanation on a closed post to suggest the OP go straight to appeal. We want them to understand the reopen process, and only appeal when it doesn't work.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 +1

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 You mean like this?

Well I only read the part before what I quoted.
Nice incentives, wrong conclusion.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Lifehack!

@MετάEd I have pings turned off, but yes.

5:39 PM
Indeed, no one would hang on meta anymore.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Damn you, pingsturnedoff!

I have pings turned on because I rarely even get pinged
Though I have a feeling @IͶΔ will be out for revenge

I had a coworker working here next to me and it was a bit embarrassing how many pings I was getting.

I have speakers turned off. IN YOUR FACE

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Headphones

5:40 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Especially considering the chat ping sound, haha.
There was a script on StackApps that changed the ping sound.

@DeltaEscher Headphones aren't comfortable to wear just for chat pings

Is it still there?
I want that

@DeltaEscher Yeah I think. Lemme find it.

How does it work?
Is it a download, or what?

5:42 PM
Ugh
I hate losing rep when people have their accounts deleted
...How do I use it?

what browser do you use?

chrome

Do you have Tampermonkey?

Install it then

5:44 PM
I'm scared this is super complicated

@DeltaEscher Trust me, if I pulled it out, you can pull it out too.

Cool, awesome
Now how do I use it?

i.e. everyone can. O_O
Installed it?

Click this.
And install.

5:46 PM

@MετάEd Putrescat = may he rot.
@MετάEd !!

@MετάEd literally!
Oh. that's probably what he meant.

6:53 PM
Alright @IͶΔ
I installed the thing
Now how to I customize the sound?
nvm there it is
Is there an easy way to upload a sound to use for it?
