6:00 PM
In the first six months

They have the ability to hold their breath under water.

Yes
Interesting

Only fish etc can breath under water.

yes

@terdon Snowy.

6:08 PM
Is this expression correct? " Babies will be smothered under water?

Well, drowned is more accurate.
Or will drown.

ahuh
how can we use the verb smother?

You get "smothered" by a pillow.

Smothering is similar.
I mean, technically drowning is a kind of smothering.

I want to say: he lost breath

6:11 PM
It means to deprive of oxygen, which is what happens when you drown.

Yes

You would also smother a fire, for instance, to put it out.

Define: smother

A criminal smothered an old man

Right.

6:12 PM
is it correct?

Smothering implies a conscious agent, I think.

I don't think so.

Which is why it doesn't feel quite right to say that water would smother a baby.
There's something that's not quite right about it.
Intent, maybe. I'm not sure.
Anyway, for water, use drown.

ok

I would say it is because, when you're being smothered, something is covering your mouth/nose, but it normally wouldn't be inside your lungs.

6:14 PM
How about who lost breath bcz of smoke?

Or perhaps it could be, but not typically so.
I would say smoke can be smothering...
But it's hard to distinguish between typical use and (weak) metaphor.

Suffocate because of lack of oxegen due to the smoke.

And what of things that don't have mouth or noses, like fires?

A metaphor.
But even fire cannot be smothered with water.

smother = suffocate

6:19 PM
A man cannot be smothered by vacuum, I would say, because vacuum doesn't cover his nose/mouth. Maybe metaphorically he can be.
@infinitesimal Only in some uses.

suffocate = kill by stoping the breathing.

ok
A criminal suffocated a man

Fires need to breath air

Gotta go bye
Thank u all

Bye
Thanks for asking great questions.

6:23 PM
wlcm

@terdon Well, I tried to learn from a swimming teacher once, but somehow I don't think my strokes are correct, which is why I move very slowly through the water.

You could take up swimming as a form of exercise @ABeautifulMind

@infinitesimal Why the name change?

Boredom

@infinitesimal wait...you're somebody we know? I didn't recognize you.

6:29 PM
I did.

@Mitch Skull Patrol.

nice.
'infinitesimal' is a good handle.
is 'handle' what kidses call it these days?

I prefer "name".
Or "nickname".

username

I think that is redundant.

6:30 PM
Yep, truckers use "handle" too @Mitch

Name, nickname and username mean different things.
The best word choice is username, QED.
I am going to try to change drastically the way I think to make progress.

But would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?

I usually think in way X. But sometimes, I somehow enter another state of mind, and I begin to think in way Y. Maybe I should try to think in way Y instead from now, as much as possible,
Maybe if I think in way Y as much as possible from now, I will finally be well.

Why not try Z?

6:36 PM
Sorry, I cannot elaborate what X and Y are, because I am not even sure what they are. But I can feel it.
Because Z does not exist, LOL.

Better still go back to a, b, and c.

I am now targeting the end of 2016 for complete recovery.

I always liked those letters because I could get my hands on them.

@infinitesimal i think here though 'username' sounds the best (in current usage)
again, what's with the stealing my ideas from the future!

6:42 PM
@infinitesimal Yes, actually. If you name it right, people are predisposed to think certain things of it. If you call this wonderful cup of coffee 'tea' and then you drink it... yechhh.
@infinitesimal ha ha...no 'A Beautiful' stole my idea by saying it temporally before me.

@ABeautifulMind don't ever let anybody tell you what exists or does not exist when it comes to your own way of thinking

I wonder what schizophrenia is like.
I am not sure if I would be more or less affected by it compared to what I have.

crl
me too you know

I think one cannot compare and say one mental illness is worse than another. It all depends on many factors.

crl
it's described as "hearing voices" but I don't except my voice

6:50 PM
Ultimately, the DSM might be bullshit, LOL.

Really, psychiatric diagnosis and treatment is all very ambiguous.
One man in a video said "No tests? No cures? Total fraud!"

They have too many unknowns.

There are no biological tests to diagnose a condition.

Hi everyone

6:52 PM
Also, depending on what you define, there can be no cures.
That's why it's a total fraud, LOL.

Hi again.

crl
the cure comes from yourself I believe

I believe so in my case at least.

Just believe in yourself

What is the topic@infinitesimal?

6:53 PM
@Hanaa Mental illness.

Faith in yourself is the first and most important step.

@infinitesimal I hope that when I get well, I still have a chance to do what I want to do. I hope that the doors will just keep opening then.

If they are not you will use the same determination that made you get well to open those doors. @ABeautifulMind

crl
@ABeautifulMind you could give homework help, or even become Math teacher no?

@crl You mean right now? No, I don't think I should do work now.

6:58 PM
Drag yourself up. One step at a time @ABeautifulMind

crl
being with others can help a lot, except if you're autistic too

Mental illness is a difficult thing

@Hanaa Do you have any personal experience with it?

In my family, an old woman lost her mrmory

I will go to bed in 1 hour.

crl
7:01 PM
I believe everyone is more or less mentally ill, it' a continuous function, not a binary function (mentally ill or not)

Memory

@crl I think so too.
@crl Same as sexual orientation.

crl
yep, even if I'm asexual at the moment :))

@Hanaa You can edit messages within X minutes instead of type a new line.

Where X=2

7:02 PM
Ah, I was not sure.

I'm using the mobile @ABeautifulMind

@Hanaa OK. Kids these days. =)

Kids these days?

It is just an old saying.
Kids these days don't remember the good old days.
=)

Why is it said to me? :D

7:06 PM
Because I am an old man.

A joke?

Because kids these days use the mobile a lot?
Because I am an old man who doesn't use mobile internet?

I describe old men as the autumn that is calm and wise

Mentally ill men are certainly not calm LOL.

Oh do u mean angry men?

7:08 PM
;-)

But I try to keep calm.

Do. u have a mental illness@ABeautifulMind?

@Hanaa How many years have you learned English?

Be calm, be cool.

@Hanaa Yes, in fact I have a few of them.

7:10 PM
4 years and i am in the 5 th

@Hanaa By the way, have you watched the movie A Beautiful Mind?

No i haven't

Too many bad words. Remember

Ooooooh

I don't know what kind of movies they allow in the Muslim world...

7:11 PM
Thank u for reminding mr @infinitesimal

@ABeautifulMind maybe other movies

I don't think I want to live in that part of the world, it's scary, too many things I can't do.

@ABeautifulMind scary? Why so ?

@Hanaa Because you can't even say bad words?

I’m feeling more tired than ever It really was not too clever To wake up at two A dumb thing to do I think I might sleep now forever

U r free @ABeautifulMind

Are you @ABeautifulMind going to try to improve your swimming for exercise?

@Hanaa My country has a lot of absurd laws as well. It's also pretty restrictive.
@infinitesimal I will just do walking and running, no swimming.

But it is really a beautiful religion full of peace and mercy
The secret country u mean @ABeautifulMind

@Hanaa Yes.

7:19 PM
I liked the video of those babies in water

I don't like to look at cute babies.
There is a reason.

Lo!
A secret reason

If we focus too much on the cuteness of babies or young children, we forget that they are human beings with their own emotions, not just something cute for us to enjoy.

You r right 100%

Looking at a cute child and feeling joy is not love. Caring about the child as a separate individual from you is love. QED.
This is a concept very hard for some people to understand. There is a difference between cathexis and love. Cathexis not to be confused with catharsis.

7:23 PM
This is the wisedom of old men that we need

I love my children.

@hanaa What subject do you study in university? I studied math.

It's hard for me to understand why my mother couldn't love me the way I love them.

I study English @ABeautifulMind

@KitFox Do you think she is a psychopath? Sometimes I think my father is.

7:25 PM
What is psychopath ?

@ABeautifulMind I don't think so. I think she is not capable of love and doesn't understand that she is missing something from herself and so she will never feel the need to change that.

@Hanaa I use it in the psychological sense, not the everyday sense. It is known as antisocial personality disorder, roughly speaking. You can check Wikipedia.

She doesn't think of herself as a bad parent. She is incapable of recognizing herself because she can't see anything but herself. She is her own entire universe.

Sorry to know that @KitFox

You should feel sorry for me instead @Hanaa.

7:27 PM
Eh. It's been years and lots of therapy, and I am much better now than I ever was.

My mother is so kind and her heart is full of love and sacrifice toward us

I think it made me a better person and a better parent in the long run, because now I look at these things critically instead of just existing, like I think most people do.
@Hanaa My mother-in-law is like that. She's been a wonderful healing influence and role model in my life. I can't say enough good things about her.

@ABeautifulMind u look natural to me

@Hanaa Is it because of the blue colour?

Hhh

7:30 PM
@hanaa Nobody I know uses hhh, what does it mean?

It means i laugh

Ha ha ha
Or

In math hhhh=ha ha ha

In math?

He he he
With an equals sign.

7:32 PM
@KitFox There is nobody I admire as a role model.

@infinitesimal

@Hanaa

How about ur mother?

@infinitesimal seems to get along well with ladies from Muslim countries, LOL.

7:34 PM
@Hanaa I have a good mother.
@KitFox Are you leaving the office soon? How is the bronchitis?

@ABeautifulMind I have that problem too. Lots of people talk about role models, but I've never really felt that way towards anybody. Famous or someone I know personally.

@ABeautifulMind The drugs are helping me breathe better, but I am very tired.
I will leave in a few hours, probably.

@ABeautifulMind But ugly babies are OK to look at?

@Mitch Much safer.

I like being able to look babies in the eye. They're the ones looking straight into your eyes, but it's not creepy.It's hard with adults.

7:39 PM
When will Reg have kids, lol.

So your mother is goog @ABeautifulMind

@Hanaa Yes.

Nice!

What is 'goog'?

Is she still alive?

7:40 PM
Yes.

How old is she?
Or a secret?

Ah, she is in her 60s. I am in my 30s. Anyone past 30 is old.

looooooo!

I told you I am an old man.

I thought u r 80

7:42 PM
I never lie, you just need to interpret what I say correctly.

@Hanaa Sometimes he feels that way.

Which way@KitFox?

@Hanaa That I am 80?

ahuh why?

@hanaa Will you become an English teacher or professor?

7:44 PM
Yes soon
By the will of ALLAH

I believe in the Buddha, but not much.

U r from Asia i guess

He's from Antarctica

@Hanaa Yes.

ahuh
Nice!

7:46 PM
No, Asia is not nice, LOL.

I like the idea of Antarctica. The only reason governments care about it is for research, there's no military purpose to it. So they just split it up like a pie. Like in a cake cutting algorithm.

It iiiiiis

Asia is a big place. many different worlds there. It's like saying 'all people from Earth are the same'. Once you get there, people are totally different.
Take Siberia. Most people would say it is not nice.

I have ranked the continents in terms of quality of life.

But if you like snow and sleigh riding, it's great.
@ABeautifulMind I ranked the planets for quality of life. Earth is up near the top.

7:49 PM
Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, Asia, Africa, roughly speaking.

I've never understood how 'Oceania' is a continent. It doesn't seem very contiguous.
Which is what I think a continent should be

@Mitch In Buddhist cosmology there are six main realms of existence. Gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, hell beings.

The continent is properly called Australia.

hungry ghosts? well at least they aren't the bottom rung.

There are different definitions of continent as well.

7:50 PM
@ABeautifulMind I am at the top of the list, yay!
Hell beings rock, I always knew it.

@Cerberus Then call it that instead of something that sounds like 'everything else, like random islands in all the oceans of the world'

Where is Antarctica sistuated?

@Hanaa It's one of the seven continents, near the South pole.

@Mitch I agree.

It is very cold

7:52 PM
@Cerberus Then we should change things.
Viva la Revolucion!!
Pow! Pow!
(that was me shooting guns into the air)

Well, the continent is already Australia.

Oh.
puts away guns

So a 360-degree revolution?

ha ha. Yes!

Such a fuss.

7:53 PM
Go for a 720. Just once is kinda lame. kinda n00b.

That would be revolutions.
The dual of 360 is 720.

I am going to bed. I hope I get a revelation in my dreams.

Too bad Germanic has lost its dual.
Sleep well.

Good night

@Cerberus Live dual, laud evil

8:03 PM
@Mitch what r u talking about?

@Mitch You, you...palindromist!
But it's not a bad palindrome at all.

It's a palindrome, the same letters forward and backwards. Also, the words say what they mean, live the opposite way of what you are (or hope you are) and praise bad things. It's supposed to be funny.
@Cerberus It's not mine. But you can give me all praise, just because.

gives praise

Giving praise to what? what is dual living? and lauding evil?
@Mitch could u answer?

@Cerberus blushes ... but accepts praise and runs away to turn it in for cash

8:09 PM
Good.

@Hanaa Please stop using "u" and "r" for "you" and "are". This isn't SMS.

lo!

4 mins ago, by Mitch
It's a palindrome, the same letters forward and backwards. Also, the words say what they mean, live the opposite way of what you are (or hope you are) and praise bad things. It's supposed to be funny.

ok @KitFox

kthx

8:10 PM
What's SMS?

@Hanaa using SMS speak makes things sound way too informal here, like ... um...

I didn't use um Mr @KitFox

ha ha! I'm still um'ing... um...

srsly. you're making me crazy eights.

srsly=?

8:13 PM
seriously.

ok
Wlcm @IceGirl

I'm poking fun at myself, since I use some txtspk, although it's really lolcat. It's the 'r' and 'u' variants that are irritating.

@Hanaa Thanks

txtpk and lolcat?@KitFox

Hi @IceGirl

8:15 PM
@infinitesimal Hi

@Hanaa Text speak, the language people use for texting.
Lolcat is an Internet dialect.

r u srs? @KitFox :D

@infinitesimal Who are you?

r u srs @KitFox? :D

There's not really any use for txtspk anymore, except to show off that you're an illiterate teenager, which is probably why it irks me.
totes

8:19 PM
Ice Boy @IceGirl

@infinitesimal ooooooh. what is your user id? I mean the number

@KitFox sorry if my u and r made u angry
I didn't know they are informal*

@Hanaa No, not angry.

Funny picture@crl

crl
8:28 PM
there is an infinite number of them imgur.com/r/cats

yes

crl
sorry imgur.com/search?q=cats is better

I never like it when people say an "infinite number"

Why?

crl
there's an ∞ of atoms
my avatar is too close from KitFox's, I'll investigate for a new one

8:42 PM
There is no infinity of atoms. Sooner or later you come to the very last atom. And then it's over.

crl
are they really countable?

Yes given enough time.

crl
but the universe is in expansion, so while you're counting, there may be new atoms

New information

8:54 PM
@crl Just start counting and we'll worry about the new ones when you finish the first pile.

crl
hmm the atoms in the air keep moving, it's hard to count them, I'll make an estimation rather

user116848
Nice discussions going on today!

crl
lol

@crl Don't forget to tag the ones you've already counted!

@Farooq you are not participating

8:58 PM
Pro tip: move tagged atoms to your left and count new ones to your right.

user116848
@Hanaa Yes I participate here sometimes. It is fun to talk here with folks.

crl
@Robusto If I tag them, I'll stick new atoms to them

Can't be helped.
Anyway, don't tag them with atoms, use electrons instead.

crl
ah good idea
