OK, you asked for it.

oh!
that took me until just now to put together

This is the downside of remembering every song I've ever heard.
OK, from the formatting alone, see if you can tell who composed the above answer.

@tchrist Hard to say for sure. Given the reaction of the interim CIO, they were likely blindsided, which means it was not an ultimatum "resign or we'll fire you" thing.
At least not a planned one.
I think morale will increase significantly with him gone.
It would have been better for morale for him to have been summarily discharged, but this is a good enough approximation, at least if they can also dump the bogus NPS thing.

Neil Diamond sucks @Robusto

This is the downside of remembering every song I've ever heard.
You don't have to tell me about it.
I'm the one who has to hear that song at every frickin' Red Sox game.

11:11 PM
@KitFox tries to remember which NPS this is

how can both of you say such things

Don't tell me you're a Neil Diamond fan.

I'm definitely not
but I'm not a lot of people fans, and I still respect the impact they made with their one or two big hits
I mean c'mon, that song sounds great.

Neil Diamond had more than one or two big hits.
I respect that lots of people like him. But I don't listen to artists just because other people like them.

oh, then we're on the same page.

11:14 PM
@tchrist Oh. He nailed 30% of our performance review on raising the Net Promoter Score over 4. He sent the survey to somewhere between 50 and 150 managers in the lab every month, asking them on a scale of 1 to 10 how likely were they to recommend IT to their colleagues. If they didn't respond, it counted as a 0.

that's all I meant to say, that you should respect him.

The NPS was at 0.2 last I knew.

@GeorgePompidou I mean, he's not like The Monkees or something.

who's that?
and it's spelled Monkeys

@GeorgePompidou No it ain't either.

11:16 PM
that's the year in which my mom was born.

They were a TV band from the '60s who didn't play their instruments and sucked for other reasons as well\. But they were more popular than The Beatles for a time.

hmm…
they look pretty gay.

@GeorgePompidou Shut your mouth.

@GeorgePompidou It was the time of the year and the time of the day.

@KitFox My. God.

11:18 PM
also, TV band was a thing?
@KitFox yessum shuts mouth

@Robusto I’m afraid that the Occupy Movement to your lawn has come.

We've lost 20% of our department in the last 8 months.

@GeorgePompidou How redundant a thing to say!

I've never seen morale this low anywhere and I've worked some crap jobs.

@KitFox Flippin’ loon!

11:19 PM
@tchrist Oi!

It is the word *pejorative* that hurts.
My old boat goes round on a crutch
And doesn't get under way.
It's the time of the year
And the time of the day.
@tchrist They can't stop me. They can only hope to contain me.

@tchrist how?

@tchrist: I'm kind of surprised you're not a Wallace Stevens fan.

I liked Mikey. I don't think anyone else ever did. Poor Mikey.

Neil Diamond doesn't earn any respect from The Raider Nation he's just a chump wanna be.

11:23 PM
Noted.

@GeorgePompidou You said pretty gay. I don’t know much, but one thing I do know is that pretty and witty and gay tend to hang out with each other a whole lot.
@Robusto He is going to be so freaked if he ever looks at the period shots of Shaun & David Cassidy.

Wallace Stevens?

is there anything stylistically/actually wrong with using #!sudo python to run all my python scripts as root?

@Robusto No, noisebox.

without having to type those words
every time

11:26 PM
@GeorgePompidou Please stop ingesting acid.

everyone's scripts don't have shebang lines and they write in their readmes to do sudo python script.py or whatever
that's so painfully difficult to me
why would you subject yourself to that

Just don't do it

Python doesn’t have a taint model. Are you trying to die?

Python is a dangerous snake.

So am I.

11:27 PM
Friends don't let friends run sudo scripts.

I still haven't received any coherent reasoning as to why I shouldn't do that

If you expect to run a script under differential privileges, you are insane to use anything that doesn’t have dataflow tracing built right into the language.

oh no, I have to with raspberry pi's piglow
it doesn't work if you don't run it as root

@skullpatrol I thought you are a banana.

That too.

11:28 PM
I'm saying between running every script with sudo python script.py and making it executable and adding that shebang line, is there a difference?
it's not that serious, it's just a raspberry pi

You don’t want advice.

not particularly, I want to know if there's a reason I shouldn't do that.
if you want to give advice though, I welcome it since you're an experienced programmer and I'm not.
but I'd like it to be intelligible
at my high level of idiocy
I'm also not using python by choice. it's just what it says in the piglow instructions ^.^
I suppose I could use other stuff.

I’m used to running a multiuser operating system, and used to thinking that way.

me too. but this is raspbian.

Sounds like Rob’s lesbian mockingbird.

11:33 PM
I wrote a soothing binary clock script for my piglow. ^.^
much better than the existing one.

The mockingbird is silent tonight. Doesn't like the torrential rain, apparently.

I hate binary clocks.

and a facebook notifier, though since I don't have facebook I had to hijack my girlfriend's

Everything is either tick or tock.

now whenever someone pokes her my piglow oozes colors
and I'm working on a english se chat script for it in javascript
but all of these things have to be sudoed
I'm not sure why… since I don't understand anything beyond the language-specific library for it
like how it actually interacts with the hardware.

11:37 PM

piglow is more confusing.
doesn't have any numbers and the LEDs are in a spiral.

Wtf

@GeorgePompidou You have a porcine limbo dancer?

no no. piglow. say it with me.
pi… glow.

Don't be condescending now.

11:41 PM
@GeorgePompidou Pig low, suey cherriot.

@tchrist good. we're making progress for sure.
oh look! someone made perl scripts for it

@tchrist do you actually wear that "watch"?

that's your cup of tea
or rather big jug of tea, 5th edition

@skullpatrol I wear no watch, nor wish one.

I wear a watch but it has no quotes.

it's a real, physical, non-ironic watch.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 hahahaha.

@reg got the suit! And a planet, on discount

you're Canadian.

You gotta problem with that?

@GeorgePompidou what's that got to do with it?

11:45 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 nothing. you are in our hat.
I went to a nice sandwich shop in Canada a few weeks ago and plan on going again in a few weeks.

since I think Toronto is the nearest decent city to this shithole in which I currently live.
and there are no sandwiches around here.
just mcdonaldses

You live in a shithole?
That explains a lot.

Please find the dupe:

what are you on about

Q: Why don't we use an apostrophe to denote ownership on 'it'?

dwjohnstonWe use apostrophes to denote ownership: I wrapped the cat's claws so he wouldn't scratch me while I handled him. However, we don't use an apostrophe when 'it' is the owner. The cat licked its claws. This seems inconsistant - the claws belong to it, it being the cat. Is there some f...

Like this its'

wow, these go far back

Thanks.

11:51 PM
We use an apostrophe when we should use a peristrophe.

I think we should use a periscope.

Closer my heart to thee.

this way we could see things above the surface of the water easier.

Peristrophe is a genus of between 15–40 species of flowering plants in the family Acanthaceae, native to warm temperate to tropical regions of Africa and Asia. The species are shrubs or herbaceous plants, with two-lipped flowers. == Selected species == == References... ==

that's what I said, periscope.

11:52 PM
We have apogee and perigee; why not apostrophe and peristrophe?

but you and wikipedia spelled it wrong, and wikipedia doesn't know what it is.

Hush, dear, grownups are talking.

>.>
<.<
you're just one grown up.
talking about periscopes.

I would accept the use of its'

@JohnLawler You write "if I werent in the habit. . . ." :) — Michael Owen Sartin 38 secs ago

sound the genius alert please.
blah, not getting into it.
