yummm

anybody there? I have a question.

hi!

@meer2kat Hi! Could you clarify a doubt that I have in my mind regarding prepositions?

@SandeepDhamija possibly?

@Robusto You mean 'she'. She has a really great strip mall.

12:14 PM
@meer2kat I'm wondering why there is a preposition in sentence- "The hills here are covered with wildflowers IN early spring." Isn't "early spring" an adverbial phrase? As in "I'll go there NEXT WEEK"

"I'll go there next spring" is correct.
"The hills are covered in spring" is correct.
(using or not using respectively in those is wrong)

@meer2kat Have you listened to the song?

@SandeepDhamija In this sentence, "in" is used sort of as a replacement for "during". I'll go there next spring works, but this sentence requires "in" to specify when the hills are covered. The hills here are covered with wildflowers DURING early spring. These two sentences can be used interchangeably. It's a sort of timekeeper, if you will. Does that make sense?

@JasperLoy There's a song "Possibly"?

@meer2kat Hehe, I knew it! LOL!

please answer 'possibly'

@Mitch No.

Dang.

12:20 PM
Oh, 2 of my answers got migrated to ELL, so I joined ELL as well.

Might as well.

Possibly as well

@SandeepDhamija Early spring is a time that is very different from "next week". I hope this helps!

@meer2kat but "I'll go there early spring" won't work. Why is that?

You'd have to ask the bot

Let us not abuse the bot.

poor bot. always beeng mistreated.

@SandeepDhamija I've heard people say that before, actually. I'm not sure if it's officially correct in the grammar books but I can fully understand the meaning. It's really that particular sentence that needs "in". I believe a more correct version of your second version will be "I'll go there early in spring," or "I'll go there in early spring". "Next" is asking in which spring you will go.

@MattЭллен I heard that.

that really does look like a bunch of gibberish right? it's not just my screen

@meer2kat Yeah, I think it is supposed to look like gibberish

prepositions are idosyncratic. there aren't really rules for them.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal, in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite. Alu...

The kinkajou (Potos flavus) is a rainforest mammal of the family Procyonidae related to olingos, coatis, raccoons, and the ringtail and cacomistle. It is the only member of the genus Potos and is also known as the "honey bear" (a name that it shares with the sun bear). Kinkajous may be mistaken for ferrets or monkeys, but are not closely related to either. Native to Central America and South America, this mostly frugivorous, arboreal mammal is not an endangered species, though it is seldom seen by people because of its strict nocturnal habits. However, they are hunted for the pet trade, fo...

Etymology: a. Fr. quincajou (Denis 1672), from N. American Indian: cf. Algonquin Kwingwaage, Otchipwe gwingwaage, the wolverine. The same word orig. as carcajou, which is still applied to the wolverine; but erroneously transferred by Buffon to the quadruped indicated below. (J. Platt, in N. & Q. 9th s. VII. 386, 18 May 1901.)

A carnivorous quadruped (Cercoleptes caudivolvulus) of Central and South America, allied to the racoon; it is about the size of the common cat, has a prehensile tail, and is nocturnal in its habits. Also called potto or honey-b

Ladyfingers are light and sweet sponge cakes roughly shaped like a large finger. They are a principal ingredient in many dessert recipes, such as trifles, charlottes, and tiramisu. They are typically soaked in a sugar syrup or liqueur, such as coffee for the tiramisu dessert. They are also commonly given to infants, being soft enough for teething mouths but easy to grasp and firm enough not to fall apart. @meer2kat [cult](http://cult.urbanup.com/453357) a religious group which promotes worship of a human leader and devotion of one's life to a specific purpose.
Some have members practice certain rituals or follow a set of principle rules. The group usually believes its way is the only correct way to live life, and all non-members are doomed to some horrible fate if they cannot be persuaded to join.

Cult movie does not mean a bad movie, in-fact the opposite.

cult /kʌlt/, sb.

Etymology: ad. L. cultus worship (f. colĕre to attend to, cultivate, respect, etc.), and its Fr. adaptation culte (1611 Cotgr.). Used in 17th c. (? from Latin), and then rarely till the middle of the 19th, when often spelt culte as in French.

1 Worship; reverential homage rendered to a divine being or beings. Obs. (exc. as in sense (def#2)).
2a A particular form or system of religious worship; esp. in reference to its external rites and ceremonies.
2b Now freq. used attrib. by writers on cultic ritual and the archæology of primitive cults.
