Noun: merit (plural merits)
  1. Something deserving positive recognition.
  2. Something worthy of a high rating.
  3. Alexander Pope
  4. Reward deserved; any mark or token of excellence or approbation.
  5. (obsolete) The quality or state of deserving either good or bad; desert.
  6. merit m (plural meric)
Verb: merit (third-person singular simple present merits, present participle meriting, simple past and past participle merited)
  1. (transitive) To earn or to deserve.
  2. (intransitive) To be worthy or deserving.
verb definition 2, "(intransitive) To be worthy or deserving."
could anyone give an example sentence with "merit" being used in this way? it seems at best archaic to me

12:47 AM
Your question merits at least one example sentence.

Jez
that's not the same though, you're using merit transitively there

Hmmm... Your question merits?
That doesn't sound like anything

Jez
i know
yet it's in the dictionaries
I reckon it's the sense that Shakespeare is using here:
> The insolence of office and the spurns
> That patient merit of the unworthy takes

OED would have an example if it had a verb intransitive entry
Oh... Shakespeare? What does he know? Sentences barely hold together.

Jez
yeah

@Robusto It is not an open-world RPG at all, that is true. A completely different genre. Have you ever played King of Dragon Pass? It is almost its own genre, and both it and the Banner Saga are critically acclaimed.
Steam always has equal dollar and euro prices, it seems.

The negative reviews call it Oregon Trail.

Ah, that game. I have never played it, but wasn't it good in its time?
By the way, are Steam prices excluding taxes for you?
If your taxes are 0% on Steam and mine 21%, the net price will be almost the same for us.
At current exchange rates.
Of course Steam has always had parity, even when the dollar was still much cheaper.

Huh, these screenshots are of Antara, except the first one: gog.com/game/betrayal_at_krondor

3:47 AM
@Cerberus I don't actually know, because I don't keep track of that kind of thing.

Yello!

Jez
9:56 AM
@Robusto that old DOS game that was the crappiest thing Sierra ever made?

This is as good as I can do for you.
Is this the same as "this is as much as I can for you?"
This is all I can do._

Boo!

Boo!

@Farooq Is that your actual name?

user116848
Yes

user116848
I used it when I started chatting here.

user116848
Then I changed it to Arrowfar :-)

Maria just said one word to me, lol. She says about one word to me every few weeks, namely, hi, lol.

7:30 PM
@user4215 I would read it that way, yes.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So do you agree or disagree about these Lollipop annoyances? pcworld.com/article/2849815/…

8:07 PM
None of those seem like deal breakers.

Jez
fuck, they removed the notification ticker??
that sucks.
how am i meant to quickly see that i have a txt or calendar item waiting now?

8:33 PM
@Robusto Perhaps not. On the other hand, why install Lollipop if you don't have to?
@Jez You will still see the icon. And you will get a pop-up (which blocks the upper quarter or so of your screen) for many applications.

@Cerberus Of all of those only the lock screen really bugs me. The power menu is a bit strange but I never used it anyway and I have an app that gives me a quick reboot button. And I like the ability to silence alarms. I use alarms for a variety of purposes and none of them coincide with the full do-not-disturb mode.
When I'm sleeping I put the phone to priority mode (it does it automatically). Alarms work in that mode, as do calls, but no other notifications.

Jez
I want a lockscreen that's just a lockscreen damnit
"quick access to the phone and camera", ffs
unlock, press on camera icon
why do you need quicker access than that? on the other hand, accidental unlocking is a PITA

When I'm in a theater watching a movie I don't want an alarm to go off. I have an alarm that goes off each day at 9pm to remind me of something. I don't need that reminder in the middle of the movie.

Jez
make the lockscreen ONLY unlock, and make it hard to do accidentally

@Jez Because you can activate the camera even if the phone is pin-locked. It's much faster than "turn on phone, enter pin, some app loads, press home, find the camera icon, launch camera". Just "swipe to camera"
Same with the dialer. Assuming you use your phone for calls, you might want easy access to that, esp in an emergency.

Jez
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. the lockscreen should at least be configurable to remove that functionality
and another thing, what happens when you get an incoming call? one this that really irritates me is when they just say "oh, we're overriding the lockscreen to show you this incoming call." no, damnit. i accidentally swipe the thing as I'm getting it out of my pocket
i want my workflow to be this: $ANYTHING_WHATSOEVER -> swipe to unlock -> deal with thing
i dont care whether it's camera, incoming call, outgoing call

10:15 PM
@Jez Well, in the past at least, it was configurable. I don't know if it still is. I LIKE that functionality so I didn't look into it.
@Jez I would hate it if I had to unlock my phone to answer it.
The gesture is the same anyway, a single swipe.
I have never once accidentally answered a call or accidentally unlocked it.

Jez
I know that htc's default firmware screwed it up even more. they made the swipe "up" to answer, "down" to reject or something.... making it even more likely i would accidentally perform one of said actions when getting the phone out of my pocket. like, half the time.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 i would not.
accidental swiping is far more of a problem than a quick unlock

@Jez Since Android 4.0 at least, all android phones have had multiple actions possible.

Jez
multiple actions?

@Jez yeah, answer call, decline call, decline with SMS

Jez
yeah
but all of them are annoyingly easy to do accidentally
assuming no unlock is first required

10:18 PM
Prior to 4.0 the default was swipe from the left edge to the right to answer, and from the right edge to the left to decline

Jez
"yeah, who is tha... oh fuck, my finger pressed on decline with SMS and moved a bit"

@Jez Seriously I would return any phone that made me enter my pin before answering a call.
@Jez I have never once done that.
Oh, sorry
one time

Jez
a) it could be configurable

but the phone was already unlocked
I was playing a game

Jez
b) for answering a call it could just be an unlock without PIN

10:19 PM
a call came in and the UI changed as I was in mid swipe

Jez
well, i have.
getting it out of my pocket involves placing my fingers on the screen and pulling
hard enough to move them along the screen
it's unbeliavably easy to accidentally swipe

Well, you could always look into some customizations you could install to change the behaviour. I have never seen a phone of any flavour that required unlock to annswer.
anyway, gotta run.
cya

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Why don't you use a reminder for that 9PM thing, rather than an alarm?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Huh, you swipe to answer? I wish my phone did that: I have press to answer.
Or do I?
Hmm.
I am certain have press to decline, which sucks.
