@Cerberus I never said you were crazy. I only said that every place is perceived as aggressive for one reason or another by one person or another. I also said that being perceived as aggressive is not bad per se. I also said something about Newton's third law.
Wevs. If I had to put just one thing straight, and this goes out to @terdon as well, it would be this:
We are not "hostile towards newcomers who are learning the language". Heck, we have created a whole spin-off site just for them. We never said, "fuck off", we always said, "here's your new cozy home".
And just for the record: Cerberus is a newcomer learning the language, too. So am I. Yet we are both on here after all these years. And the same standards apply to us as to anyone else. If I had to compose a question these days, I myself would have to be careful in wording it. And that's a good thing.
So again, there will always be people saying that Stack Overflow, or Programmers, or Ask Different, or Arqade, or Cooking, or ELU, is a giant pile of shit. And there'll be no way convincing them otherwise. Whoop dee doo.
We can't please everyone. We are not in the business of pleasing everyone.

Some of them might be right.
You cannot just have over a million websites that cover the same stuff.
If you really want to split things down, you can come up with a separate website for every single tag.

That is another aspect of it. There are any number of sites already where you can just throw your spaghetti at the wall. (And get a crappy answer in return, or no answer at all.)

But that's not what we do, I hope not for now.
I don't know why Quora is getting bigger than us.
I think one of the reasons has to do with the way they are holding the website together.

If I want to ask a question that does not contain a single question, and fails to so much as spell "English" correctly — well, there are any number of sites that will gladly accept it. Nobody forces me to post it on ELU if I can't be bothered to put the same amount of effort into my question I'd expect people to put into their answers.
@Noah Quora is getting bigger than us precisely because everybody can just dump their worst shit there.
They are in the business of pleasing everyone.

9:33 AM
But that's where the issue of quality arises. You tell people to be loose and careless. You don't actually help them improve their posting habits. As a result, they go to that less professional website and come up with any kind of shitty content they want.

The very definition of a win-win.

Maybe so. But the end result is more mess on the Internet.

Crap site gets more crap, crap-free site stay crap-free.
@Noah well, I don't know if you got the memo, but: there can't be more mess on the Internet. Impossible. The battle has long been lost.
The Internet is all about a giant mess. It should really be called the Intermess.

In music, an intermezzo (, plural: intermezzi), in the most general sense, is a composition which fits between other musical or dramatic entities, such as acts of a play or movements of a larger musical work. In music history, the term has had several different usages, which fit into two general categories: the opera intermezzo and the instrumental intermezzo. Renaissance intermezzo The Renaissance intermezzo (plural: intermezzi) was also called the intermedio. It was a masque-like dramatic piece with music, which was performed between the acts of a play at Italian court festivities on ...

But we should stop turning it into a supergiant mess.

9:37 AM
There are thousands of search engines alone. And someone, somewhere, actually uses them. They all have users.
@Noah Yahoo tried to bring order into the mess. Look at them now, they are a bad copy of CNN.

Who remembers when people manually categorised webpages on Yahoo?

I do.
I had to submit pages back in the day.

is there a chatroom for our sister Website ELL?

The Internet is the ultimate democracy. Without a five-percent threshold. You don't like all the other parties, you create your own. You don't know all the other parties, you create your own.

 English Language Learners

A room to talk about English, linguistics, or anything you wan...

9:41 AM
And the only true one. Except for its encrypted Websites.

Yeah. I don't quote XKCD often, but when I do, it's the comic about standards.
Oh frigg. It inlines automatically. Frigg frigg frigg. Fixing...
Much better now.

Why is that? I liked the previous one, the inlined one.

So yeah. s/standards/websites/.
@Noah because this:

even the time cube has a website

Apr 22 '11 at 21:53, by RegDwight
You post another XKCD, I'll kick you again.
And I really don't want to be kicking myself.

9:44 AM
I think you already did. At least once.

@MattЭллен more to the point, all the people who do not agree with the time cube have websites, too.

So do the people who do not agree with the people who do not agree with the time cube.
@Noah yeah, but not inlined.
Sep 19 '12 at 12:24, by ЯegDwight
Okay, this XKCD is a huge time sink, I'll give him that.
Or you mean, I already kicked myself once?
Could be. I'm omnipotent, after all.

How do you repost a post from a user again?

I will now use my omnipotence to force myself to have delicious lunch.

9:46 AM
enjoy!

@Noah you need the URL of that post, and you need to post it on its own line with nothing else.
Your post has the URL "http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/11312124#11312124"
Copy and paste that one.

damnit. I can't quote myself before I say anything

Here's a simple way of doing it. Hover over the post, and click on the little drop down arrow, select the link(permlink) and drag it into the text box.

@Noah there's an even easier way!

@MattЭллен And that is?

Q: Use of the prepositions (on/off)

user52472Is it correct to say 'on it' or 'off it' where 'it' may refer to something like a light switch?

what to do with this?
it doesn't seem quite good enough for ELL

10:22 AM
I guess the answer is "answer it"

1 hour later…
11:43 AM
Guys, what is the technical term of grammar used in the following sentence?
"Tickets to the party cost $24 each and are inclusive of dinner and drinks."

Sorry?
Hmm, I don't get it.

the things in the sentence are technically words
do you want to know parts of speech or something like that?
are is a copula

My question is why can't we put "inclusion" in place of "inclusive". I sometimes forget things that I knew before.

I see
"The tickets are inclusive of X" -> "The tickes include X"
you can't put including in there as that would imply that the process of inclusion hasn't finished

11:52 AM
Oh
I get it now

inclusion is a single word but inclusive is an adjective so you cannot place inclusion in that place.

yes, inclusion is a noun, so it won't fit where inclusive of does
inclusive of is a single unit there

what should be the answer?
I think it's a word that has to do with "ball"
but I can't think of it

I have no idea

12:11 PM
Good morning.

hello

@EnglishMaster blank

oh dang it
YOU ARE RIGHT
I am enlightened.

Hello
and good bye!

later

12:19 PM
@MattЭллен Noooo! Where are you going!? I JUST GOT HERE!

I only just showed up too.
Hey, what's up with all the flags lately (past few days)?
Are people getting tetchy?

What flags? I haven't been here.

Well, I leave my chat on and I have a flag...um...flag on, but already taken care of. (UI glitch?)
and I've noticed that happening lately.

Oh, yeah. It does that.

I feel like I'm at a school yard and kids start yelling 'fight! fight! fight!'
And of course I think that is terribly immature and all (you know because it's uncool because it is so middle school). But I still want to listen in.

12:29 PM
The math room is like the UFC of the internet :D

Also, what's really offensive? Bad words? big deal. This ain't your aunt's house. Politic or religious opinion? It's your opinion. You yelled at me? calling in the parents is uncool. So what's left?
@cyberskull Yeah, those math people. What do they talk about? Conspiracy theories?

yup, amongst other theories...
...its a very theoretical environment where egos get in the way.

Egos? No way.

why not?

I was joking.

12:40 PM
sorry...that was a good example of not being able to take a joke :-)
being toooo literal
taking things too literally is a common source of conflict in there
but that is the nature of the subject

12:56 PM
I don't have an ego.

1:19 PM
@Cerberus Nortonn's original banning came from some fairly bad behaviour right off the bat. It's not like we didn't give him a chance to learn the ropes. He was a troll from the very start.

People can sometimes change.

Too bad they don't.

@cyberskull If he wants to demonstrate that he's changed, he should accept the fact that he's been banned for violating the rules of the community. The initial rule violations were pretty egregious. Like editing porn into posts.
Copyright violations.
etc.
We gave him chance after chance to just back off for a short time, but he kept making new sockpuppet accounts to keep up his trolling behaviour.

Don't you have any hope for him/humanity?

At one point a bunch of high-rep users had a huge conversation with him in the comment thread of one of his questions. He was rude and frankly a little insane. I honestly think he has mental problems. But that's not the point. The point is that we have rules and he never once followed them.
@cyberskull him, no. Humanity, depends on the time of day.

1:28 PM
You haven't seen the confidential exchanges with him.

Has he been to this chat?

I think so.
Back when he was Nortonn.

How did he interact?

in Discussion, Jul 21 '12 at 5:56, by Nortonn S
hello ha!
Read it for yourself.

he was rude and paranoid. He accused us all of violating his first amendment rights and being government stooges.

1:30 PM
Oh, you can't, can you?
Sorry.

let me take a look

He also explained that the symbols were to fool the duplicate detector.

That conversation was after the long comment thread on a now-deleted question.
Found the comment thread. It's deleted though so you need over 9000 reps to read it. english.stackexchange.com/questions/75347/job-opening-positions

@KitFox To a better place

who was user19161?

1:38 PM
Jasper?

could be

yeah it was Jasper
you can see some of the replies do @JasperLoy to those messages

yep

@Matt You should get this Lego kit:

lol yes!

1:41 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yep, he sounds like a tough cookie indeed.
I also see this is a separate "Discussion" room frozen 400 days ago...

@cyberskull That chat room was created specifically to continue the conversation from the question thread I posted above

icic
so he came in expecting conflict
or even looking for it

Not exactly. He came in doing things wrong. We tried to get him to fix things and he went psycho.
We banned him and he went psychoer.
s/banned/suspended/

has he ever been in here?

we tried to reason with him and he was unreasonable.
in THIS room? I don't know.

1:50 PM
man is reasoning animal, not a reasonable one :-)

He's viewed it, but not chatted in it.

how do you know that^

You can see his chat history, but also I remember seeing his avatar in this room before, even though he's never spoken here. He might have been banned at the time.

hmm...
my advice would be to just "ignore" him and let him know that you are doing so
we all have that option

but he keeps violating the rule of "if you're banned, you're not allowed to create sockpuppets to keep doing what got you banned, or even to keep doing anything"
We have to enforce the rules or else they are meaningless.

1:57 PM
You are such a Republican sometimes.
;-)

let's face the fact that he wants attention...
...take that away and he will leave.

Well, we don't have a hellban option.
