@WMD I have always thought of it the latter way...

WMD
@WillHunting Which renders the word "straight" essentially meaningless.

@WMD More like copyright lawyers all over the world, and in America in particular—because this TPP they are trying to force down your throats is all an American mercantilist initiative.
They wrote it.

@Mahnax, Why will it be closed?

WMD
I don't think something like that would come to Uganda.

@prime It will be closed because reference requests are off-topic.

11:01 PM
Even though those ridiculous clauses are unlawful in America itself.
They're trying to circumvent Congress.

And off-topic questions get closed as off-topic.

@Mahnax, What do you mean by reference request?

user19161
Well, this world has too many ridiculous laws, like sentencing gays to death.

As in Uganda, yes.

WMD
@prime I am trying to help you define the question better. Currently, I think it would be closed as either "not a real question" or "not constructive". But if you can clarify - like, are you looking for a simple algorithm for determining which parts of a word are affxies, or whatever - then it might stay open.

11:02 PM
And those gay killers are sponsored by American evangelist organisations.
This is not a joke.

user19161
@Cerberus Sponsored?

They paid for the anti-gay campaigns in Uganda.

@prime You want a website that will show you a word's root words. Asking about it on EL&U is a request for a reference.

@WillHunting They paid some politicians.

Q: Rectangle intersection algorithm

Anshul gargHi I tried a question to check whether two rectangles intersect or not I have written code if rectangles are parallel to x-axis struct point { int x; int y; }; struct rect { struct point left; struct point right; }; //1 - intersection // 0- no intersection int rectintersectioncheck(struct...

11:03 PM
@Mahnax, i can get the root from etymology, right?

Hoot!

The comments on this one are a train wreck.

You are as bad as I am.

user19161
@Cerberus OMG. Is there justice in this world? There is law but there is no justice.

@prime Yes, probably.

11:03 PM
There is some justice.

@Mahnax, but my question is to know how does that meaning of that word come?

That Ed Heal guy is so wrong. No idea what he's been smoking.

WMD
@prime Not necessarily.

But not everywhere, not all the time.

user19161
@Cerberus Like I said, this world will be full of shit until I take over.

11:04 PM
Good luck.

@prime …what?

user19161
@Cerberus But I don't intend to. I just want to live my own life quietly.

user19161
But sometimes, while I try to live my own life, others impose on me with their stupid rules.

@Mahnax, if i break that word to root , still i can't get the meaning of that word from that smaller parts of that word

WMD
@ЯegDwight The answers are as much a mess as the comments.

11:05 PM
The etymological fallacy is a genetic fallacy that holds, erroneously, that the present-day meaning of a word or phrase should necessarily be similar to its historical meaning. This is a linguistic misconception. An argument constitutes an etymological fallacy if it makes a claim about the present meaning of a word based exclusively on its etymology. A variant of the etymological fallacy involves looking for the "true" meaning of words by delving into their etymologies, or claiming that a word should be used in a particular way because it has a particular etymology. A similar concept is...

@Cerberus I actually reread the assignment sheet and he promotes the usage of allusions.
("direct or implied")

@Nile See?

@Cerberus Haha yeah - thanks.

But you should not just ape the other writer only in slightly different words: you should change it a bit in such a way that you add something extra, some slightly new aspect to it.
Or use it in a new situation.

@Mahnax I'm not sure who is actually going to take the plunge, but I plan to go through the motions, just to get an idea of what's really involved.

11:08 PM
Can anyone please give me a synonym of the word 'terryfying' , that synonym will start with f

Frightening.

Frightening
jinx

Hahah!

except frightening, freezing

@prime It's terrifying, by the way, and you can use a thesaurus for this.

user19161
11:09 PM
@prime Is this a crossword puzzle?

@prime Fearsome?

Is there any log maintained for this room?

@Nile I have this on my shelf. I couldn't get past the first couple of pages.
Maybe I should try again.

user19161
@prime None, because terryfying is not a word.

@prime Yes.

11:10 PM
@KitFox Oh, definitely. Please try again.

@Cerberus, where is the log?

Scroll to the top of this page.

The first part (the book is divided into parts, then parts are divided into chapters) is a little weird to get used to.

There you see "full transcript".
Here's an on-line thesaurus.

@Nile I think it is an advance copy. Maybe I should check it out the library instead.

11:12 PM
@KitFox "advance copy"?

user19161
@prime You have no account and you can chat here?

@Nile The copies that are given out to beta readers in advance of publication.
As a marketing tool, publishers provide free copies of new titles to booksellers, journalists and even celebrities. Such a book is variously referred to as a reader's edition, an advance copy, an advance reading copy, ARC or ARE. It's the book privately released by its publisher before the book is printed for mass distribution. Readers' editions generally lack the final dust jacket, formatting or binding of the finished product; the text of an advance edition may also differ slightly from the market book, after comments are received from the reading group, or late errors are found in the...

@KitFox Oh okay, I see. I do suggest getting a newer version then :p But still, definitely read it. Life changing. It was also referenced in Modern Family as exactly that
(->life changing)

Is it good to use paper to learn new words or a text file? Which can be better?

coughs I was published just today on this website: A Prayer of Gramma Dee.
^ points discreetly

user19161
11:16 PM
@prime What do you mean?

writing on paper or writing in a textfile.txt ?

user19161
@prime I don't understand the question at all.

I like writing, so I would learn new words better by handwriting them.

writing new word meaning on a paper-pencil
or typing in a text file of computer

But it can be easier to remember printed words if you record them in your memory in "matching text" i.e., by using a text file.
It depends on the person.

user19161
11:19 PM
@prime Depends. Use whatever you like.

user19161
This is a question on psychology, not English.

WMD
which may nonetheless be asked here, so long as it is done income-prehensilely.

Size:	2 GB
  Type:	DDR2 FB-DIMM
  Speed:	800 MHz
  Status:	OK
  Manufacturer:	0x0000
  Part Number:	0x000000463732353642363145363830304600
  Serial Number:	0x00000000
That's one DIMM, @WMD.

Oh, you said Celsius. I wasn't paying attention. That's way too hot.

@Robusto, how is these information of ram pertinent here?

WMD
11:28 PM
OK, but it seems that 70 degrees may be right on the edge of normal operating range for many DIMMs. You can get extended temperature ones that go to 85 degrees. I can't tell whether the part number that you've quoted is one such.
This may well be the cause of your problems.

@prime I wasn't talking to you.
@WMD Yeah. I've rigged it to alert me if it hits 70°C.

WMD
Sorry, Kit, I think in Celsius.

Actually I mean 75°C.

@Robusto, Is this ram info answer of WMD's any question? or did anyone tell you to post this information?

The two pairs in the top module are at 72° and 73° right now.

11:31 PM
Stupid imgur won't upload my image. Have to misuse chat.
There.
Kthxsorries lol

WMD
@prime This conversation predates your entry into this room.

@Dwig, how can i type your name?
The reverse R

WMD
@Robusto Probably not a good thing if you want your computer to keep operating nicely.

I think I'll pull the boards and see if they're full of dust. Sigh.
Thanks.
BBL.

@ЯegDwight, i made it, i typed your name.

11:36 PM

How many english words do you know ? Is there any way to know it?

What do you think of Mitchell's opinion on Downton Abbey?
I find him a tiny bit annoying this time.
I like his every other video.
Not this one.
I do agree that there were some stupid plot lines in the second season.
Read the instructions carefully.
And answer truthfully.

user19161
@prime Did you intend for that to be rude? I don't know so I am asking.

@WillHunting, @Will, what did you say to me that can be rude?

user19161
@prime I was referring to your remark to Robusto. You can use the right arrow to reply and the left arrow to link backwards.

11:41 PM
Ed, you keep repeating "rotate the rectangle". But you can't rotate the rectangle because there is no such thing as the rectangle. You have an infinite amount of rectangles. Each of them at a different rotation angle. Each of them of a different size. You don't know which one is yours. Here is a quick sketch. One diagonal is simply not enough to define a rectangle — for the exact same reason that the hypotenuse is not enough to define a right triangle. @Shane is right. Goblin is right. ElKamina is right. You are wrong. Sorry. — RegDwight 30 secs ago
Really, what's wrong with me? I've spent the last 20 minutes on this shit. Why? People are wrong on the Internet all the time. I'm stupid.

WMD
Wow! You tell him, Reg.
The question is ambiguous too - see a recent comment on it.

@WMD tell me about it. Had to fire up GIMP on this piece of windows.
@WMD I voted down and voted to close. That's how my odyssey started.
And now I'm out. No, really.

user19161
@ЯegDwight No more coming back!

WMD
But it's a reasonable question, to which nobody has posted a correct and complete answer yet.
I am tempted to do so, but I can't be bothered. I am too sick of spending time on people's questions, and getting no appreciation for doing so.

11:45 PM
@Will, @WillHunting, Which remark to Robusto ?

Dusted them off and now we're back in the ballpark.

WMD
Oh, that's good.

user19161
@prime Have you used the arrows I talked about. Hover over the message and you will see.

Also swapped the boards.

@Will, what arrow?

user19161
11:46 PM
@prime Well, never mind. :-)

Left/Right arrow from keyboard doesn't do anything here
@Will, which arrow are you talking about?

user19161
@prime Use the mouse!!!

@Will, did you want to know about ram from robusto?

user19161
@prime No, it was about something we said long ago. I guess you did not intend to be rude then.

WMD
That's hardly the point, @prime!
This is a "chat room", not an "only talk about what prime wants to talk about room".

11:49 PM
@Will, what did you say long ago?

user19161
@prime That is not the point.

@Will, what are you talking about?
@Will, something = ?

user19161
@prime I am saying that your words might have come across as rude when you asked if anyone asked him about RAM, though that may not be your intention. That is all. End of story. Let's drop this.

@WillHunting, no, i was not rude

user19161
@prime OK, note that I did not say you are.

11:52 PM
@WillHunting, i was curious to know wether if someone told him to paste that info
Or was that ram info somehow pertinent to someone's question/discussion/conversation

user19161
@prime Exactly, I understood that to be a possibility. Nonetheless, your word choice was not ideal. This could be due to your command of the language.

@WillHunting, that's fine, thank you.

WMD
wether ... ram ... :-)

ops
whether
Can anyone tell me how many words do you know? Can you tell this exactly, counting the number?

user19161
@prime I only know 18,000 words.

11:55 PM
@WillHunting, that's many words
How did you count it?

Define "know". Recognize? Use well?

user19161
@prime No, that is very few. testyourvocab.com

I know 2.6x10E23 words.

WMD
That's ten times more than you think it is.

user19161
@Robusto That looks familiar...

user19161
11:56 PM
Is that some constant?

Most of them are nonsense, but still — that's a lotta words.

user19161
Yeah, like ah, aah, aaah...

Don't count those words like cat,dog etc..

WMD
pulls hair out

11:57 PM
Only web mention of that number exactly.

WMD
So, Will, make sure that from your count of 18000, you subtract all words that are like "cat".

user19161
@WMD Geezis, then I am left with only 180 words.

What a catastrophe.
So dogmatic.

Felicitations, canines!
