@simchona- posted the same question

user19161
Let's just talk in that room shall we?

okay

user19161
Instead of using two rooms.

@noah besides the one currently at -2?

@simchona Nah.

7:03 AM
@jasper I'll stay here. He annoys me and I won't deal with him directly.

Well, that's done then.
I suppose it just turned into the comments again.

Well done @waiwai933.
Let's stop answering his comments

I decided a few minutes ago that once Waiwai got rid of the room I would not speak directly to Nortonn again, actually.

Teh more we pay attention, the more he's gona think he is important

He's suspended again.
For a year.

7:11 AM
@simchona- send him to Fox River...
:)

user19161
Anyway that room has been frozen.

I can still see him in this room

@noah Anyone can read. He cant write.

Well, good night, folks.

user19161
@Mahnax Good night!

7:22 AM
@Mitch An interesting point, and one I had to consider carefully. Basically a usage like this is wrong if I say it. It's wrong if Matt Ellen says it, or Barrie England. It's probably wrong if KitFox says it. It's correct for a tiny percentage of Americans, including my friend John. So, if one is a foreigner learning English, one WILL SOUND UNEDUCATED if one says it. Of course, that's one's prerogative; but probably not a prerogative that the person who asked the question wishes to
exercise.

user19161
@DavidWallace Well, in language, right and wrong are not well-defined. Something is considered right if enough people use it for a period of time long enough.

user19161
But what is right today could be wrong some years ago. Language is evolving. The only thing we can say is whether this is standard today or not according to real corpus data.

But if I'm a non-native-speaker trying to learn English, then I probably want to emulate native speakers, rather than trying to invent my own rules.

user19161
So when we answer questions here we try to answer with standard rules, knowing that our perception of what is standard or not is an imperfect one, as with all things in life.

user19161
@DavidWallace Right, I was just adding to the discussion and not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone. If I were to learn a language I would not try to emulate specific native speakers. I would get a formal book and read it from front to end first before doing that.

user19161
7:27 AM
Who can tell if this or that particular native speaker uses the standard form of that language in that particular instance?

@JasperLoy Why?

user19161
@DavidWallace Because a formal book is more likely to use standard rules based on many people's patterns, not the idiosyncrasies of a few individuals.

@JasperLoy Why?

user19161
@DavidWallace Well, I think that is self-explanatory!

@JasperLoy Why?

user19161
7:32 AM
@DavidWallace Books are written by people who have a deeper knowledge of the language based on their study. The information they have obtained are from more authoritative sources, sources that use real corpus data. Not just some specific people like I said.

So you're saying that the scholarliness of certain authors makes their idiosyncrasies less idiosyncratic than those of non-authors?

user19161
@DavidWallace No, I am saying that when people write books, they use sources of information that are more reliable and encompassing. For example, if I were to write a dictionary or a grammar book, I would need to use corpus data or consult other books that do so.

user19161
I would not write a book after talking to one or two native speakers.

I wish all authors were so conscientious!
Somebody got 65 rep for repeating what other people had already said!

user19161
@DavidWallace Well, JL decided to comment and not answer. If it is an answer, it is only right that Daniel posts it as an answer and acknowledges JL if he so wishes.

user19161
7:40 AM
The site should not be left with comments that are answers while the question remains tecnhnically unanswered.

Sure, but could he have made it community wiki?
It seems dishonest somehow.

user19161
It's not dishonest. He could very well know the stuff himself and wanted to write that, but JL for some weird reason did not. So he took the effort to post it properly as an answer, so he deserved the rep. QED/

user19161
BTW I answer you quickly here because I thought about this issue over 9000 years ago.

Yeah, I'm going to reserve my right to disagree with you for now.

user19161
Sure, it's OK to disagree. That's what makes the world colourful.

user19161
7:44 AM
The problem with the world is that many people are only aware of their perspectives and not others, and think that other perspectives are necessarily wrong.

user19161
I am quite sick and tired of lots of stupid rules in this world...

Umm, OK.
I'm going to disappear for a while. CU L8R.

@DavidWallace: Its a pretty accepted thing on SE. OTOH, its considered good form (but not essential) to warn the commenter, and give him time to do it, and at least consider deleting the answer should the original source comment.

Q: Negative Numbers - What are they?

MLFIt seems a significant point was missed in the example of moving from one place to the next, then negating that move. Once I move, the move is done. I really can't negate it, can I? In other words, my 1st move was to somewhere, my 2nd move was back to where I began. I can't make any negative quat...

8:55 AM
@Anuj - C is more like 40 years old!

1 hour later…
10:11 AM
i am here now @JasperLoy

2 hours later…
12:35 PM
Well. I missed some drama, eh?

Absolutely.

So I'm part of some communist regime now?
first I'm a little oligarch, now I'm a communist
how times change

hands @MattЭллен a little red book, some ammo, and sends him up against the fascists for the glory of the motherland.

By letting this troll get attention, we are doing no one a favour.

indeed
@JourneymanGeek ok, but there's no guarantee I won't just sell the book and ammo for food...

12:41 PM
ALL WE NEED IS LOVE FOR THE MOTHERLAND

Da da duh da da daaaa

hm, I am apparently channeling the mad russian pilot character i've never actually used in an RPG ;p

congrats
I thought is was some über-patriotic Lennon

lol
Last time i did that, two people nearly died laughing ;p

least said, soonest mended

12:48 PM
Morning, campers.

Good day.

user19161
1:48 PM
@jokerdino Nothing now. Anyway I don't think he is a troll. He is either a psychopath, a schizophrenic or someone very disturbed otherwise. I think we should just ignore him from now. He should seek help for his disturbances.

user19161
2:41 PM
Anyway, for some laughter now see this video. youtube.com/watch?v=JMJXvsCLu6s

2:54 PM
@JasperLoy Great. Whoever he is, he shouldn't get the attention he is seeking.

user19161
@jokerdino I would not call him an attention seeker. I think he is just disturbed and deserves our sympathy.

3:27 PM
@Cerberus I quite like it. It made me chuckle.

@DavidWallace Actually i meant the product on which i am working.. Updated the description.. thanks :)

@MattЭллен Patriot.

user19161
Boo!

user19161
Wow, the question I answered yesterday has been top on the charts the whole day.

user19161
I have gotten over 9000 rep from it alone!

3:45 PM
@Cerberus Furrerrner

user19161
@matt How was your Fri night?

OK. How was yours?

user19161
Same. Except that it was filled with reps.

@MattЭллен hands on hips

user19161
@Cerberus imagines you with hands on hips

3:48 PM
@JasperLoy Have you walked around the Bay South Garden? I've just seen a picture, it looks amazing.

@JasperLoy You will soon outrank me!
I thought you were going to stop at 10k...then it was at 20k...

@Cerberus They're not Great British hips, though ;)

user19161
@MattЭллен There are so many gardens planned in that area I am confused which is which. But yes, I often walk in that area and it is good. I am not sure of their exact name though.

@MattЭллен No, slender continental ones, all right?

user19161
@MattЭллен Dutch hips are better than British hips!

3:50 PM
@Cerberus they'll do.

Wow.
Very futuristic and Asian.

user19161
@Cerberus Asian? I am wondering how it is Asian.

Those curves?
And the exotic trees?

@JasperLoy No way! British hips give you something to hold on to. I bet Cerb's hands just slipped right off his slender hips

user19161
@Cerberus Oh, this is not where I walk though, but somewhere nearby. Like I said, I am quite confused now. That place is like a maze.

3:52 PM
I don't know. It sure don't look European to me.
I wish each culture cherished its architectural heritage and didn't mass-convert to international modernism or classicism.

Then Britain would be all steam punk! that would be amazing

Some modernism and some classicism is nice, but not everything.
@MattЭллен What does steam-punk architecture look like?

user19161
@Cerberus I just wish people will make whatever they really like and not try to "preserve some culture".

@Cerberus uh... I don't know. Victorian, if there is such a thing

@JasperLoy So we all become identical drones?

user19161
3:54 PM
@Cerberus I actually prefer edges to curves.

@MattЭллен Sure, Victorian is nice.

user19161
@Cerberus No, so we all do what we really like, whatever that is.

@JasperLoy Then you shall have edges.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Why are you accusing them of violet imaginations? Violet imaginations beget unicorns!

@JasperLoy The problem is that "we" don't get to build anything: it is certain very small circles of architects, and civil servants, who have more important things to consider than taste or beauty—namely their ant-like view of their own significance.
Is there an better adjective for "ant-like"?

user19161
3:57 PM
@Cerberus Well said.

Formical?

what are you trying to convey?

user19161
@Cerberus Frog in the well.

@Cerberus If you're a drone, does it really matter if you're identical or not?

If you're dead, does it matter if you're dead or not?
@MattЭллен Insignificance.

user19161
3:57 PM
@Cerberus I needed to reread that sentence.

@Cerberus What's wrong with ant-like? It says all that needs to be said, without obfuscation or circumlocution.

@Cerberus ant-like because they feel like an ant in proportion to how they see their significance?

user19161
@Robusto Why two difficult words in one sentence?

Okay, so apparently formic exists.
I should have used that, but I wasn't sure.

it's a typeof acid

3:58 PM
@JasperLoy Because I thought people here could handle it. YMMV.

@JasperLoy Arg, stupid typo.

I hate stupid tyops.

@Robusto There's nothing wrong with it as long as you don't think you're a mini-queen.

@Cerberus If I ever aspire to be a queen, it will be a maxi-queen, not a mini-queen.

@MattЭллен They are ants and they behave like ants, so their ambitions are those of ants, but they don't know it.

user19161
4:00 PM
@Cerberus Oh I thought you meant the plural of doe, hehe.

@Robusto I know. But then you're not a civil servant deciding on the design of the new town hall.

@Cerberus I see.

user19161
@Robusto For me it will be Queen Latifah!

@MattЭллен Meanwhile, I am on Jelly Bean!

user19161
@Cerberus I kept thinking JB stood for the Bieber boy.

4:02 PM
Haha, no.
Not everyone thinks of Beaver boy day and night.

@Cerberus Pismic.
And yes, I'm making shit up.

(I actually find him quite nice.)
@MetaEd Indeed you are!
That doesn't like like anything?
What is ant in Greek anyway?

user19161
@Cerberus Of course. Why do you think I am in love with him?!

But I would not change ant-like, which conjures up a real image, for any other word.

Because your "word" sounded Greek.

4:04 PM
@Cerberus Remember the Myrmidon? Didn't that mean "ant-men"?

@JasperLoy I find him nice like a nephew.

No hyphen though. "Antlike".

user19161
@MetaEd Really? It has become so common that the hyphen has disappeared?

@Robusto Uhh no idea? And which Myrmidon do you mean? I believe there are several, none of them well known...

@Cerberus OMG! and your phone hasn't become unusable?

4:08 PM
@Robusto That actually means ant's nest, so you're right, myrmex = ant. I knew that.

I don't think this question is constructive

Q: Words used in England during 1912

Just GeoffI am looking for some words that would have been in common use in England just prior to WW1. regional variations are welcome. a) the word commonly used for the cinema. Cinema was in full development by this time. b) a word meaning very happy - pleased with the outcome, such as chuffed. I hav...

@MattЭллен Nope, but some applications don't work, and it took me a lot of time to fix two essential ones. But thank God I succeeded.

user19161
I am surprised the breast question today got so little attention.

@Cerberus which are the essential ones?

SuperSU is pretty essential.

4:10 PM
what would have happened if you didn't succeed?

You need it to get rooted applications to work properly.

user19161
@Cerberus It's weird that you always use the phrase when you are an atheist.

And I need PGM2, which lets me turn on the screen by swiping across it when it's off. You need SuperSU to work properly for that to work.
@JasperLoy Is it?
Everything we say is riddled with metaphors and idioms.
Quite a minefield for you.
@MattЭллен Is your phone rooted?

user19161
@MattЭллен What made you look it up? Are you planning on visiting soon?

user19161
@MattЭллен Words in common use? That's pretty vague, so voted as NR.

4:18 PM

@JasperLoy no, it's in an article in New Scientist. I read about it this morning :)
@Cerberus No, as I've said before ;)
@JasperLoy Although, it seems to only want 2 words, but they are unrelated. I'm still not sure how constructive asking for a word for cinema as used in 1912 is

@MattЭллен Sorry, I forgot. Would you ever like to?

@Cerberus I'll probably root my current phone after I upgrade. There's nothing I want to do to my current phone that requires root

user19161
I quite enjoying casting delete votes immediately after a question is closed.

user19161
In many cases, this also helps the OP to gain back some rep.

4:31 PM
@MattЭллен Not even swipe to turn on screen?

@Cerberus I have a button for that
quite ergonomically placed
I prefer less swiping to more

@MattЭллен Really?
But swiping is great.
You need only one finger, instead of an entire hand to stabilize the phone, when it's lying on a table.

Ha! That's not what would happen at all. I would swipe it off the table and onto the floor. I am clumsier than a drunk t-rex. Holding it firm is safer all round :D

In addition, power buttons wear, and when they break...

well, it's been more than 2 years

4:38 PM
@MattЭллен I don't believe it!

@Cerberus honestly, things just go everywhere

Can't you be gentle?
You need only the gentlest swipe to unlock it.

yes, I'm not strong. I'm inaccurate

The idea is that you need no accuracy at all!
Just swipe at the screen lazily in a movement that somewhat resembled a horizontal movement.

finger height, brush strength. plus I can turn my screen on with one hand anyway

4:40 PM
But not as quickly.
Oh, well.

right! way more quickly

Nah-uh!
Do you use Swype?

maybe you press buttons really slowly, not me :Þ
@Cerberus no. I've seen it though. it looks neat

The thing is that you need to grab the phone with your whole hand to press the power button. And you need to press at exactly the right spot.

but the button is in exactly the right spot

4:42 PM
@MattЭллен It is great. I didn't expect it to be good.

for a right hander, anyway

Good day, folks.

Even so.
You need to grab your phone correctly.
Evening.

@Cerberus thumb on the left, 3 fingers on the right, my index is automatically on the power button. there is no room for error. it's Matt proof
@Mahnax hiya :)

And how is everyone today?

4:44 PM
pretty good, thanks. How are you?

@MattЭллен I don't believe it until I see it!
Note that this guy is doing it very slowly.
You can do it extremely fast and it works.

@MattЭллен I'm not too bad, thanks.

And you can swipe anywhere on the screen to activate, not just at the bottom.
@Mahnax Good, good. Anything new happen?

@Cerberus Well, our regular duties around the house are being changed, after years of being the same.

Any ridiculous demands from clients at work?
@Mahnax "Are being changed"...that sounds funny.

4:47 PM
@Cerberus Huh, maybe it does.

You have no say in it? The roster is delivered from above?
Or is your mother Empress of the House?

@Cerberus one moment ... uploading ...

Oh!
Haha.

@Cerberus Yeah, that's the one.
Now that the two youngest are getting older, they can do the twins' jobs.
One of the twins will be doing mine, and I have no idea what I will be doing.

4:50 PM
@MattЭллен Impressive. But I bet someone like you could do it significantly faster with swipe.
@Mahnax Nothing?
I didn't know you had that many siblings.

@Cerberus I bet a) not and b) significantly more floor time for my phone

@Cerberus That would be great!
@Cerberus Four.

@MattЭллен I dare you to try it sometime.

@Cerberus would I have to root my phone?

@Mahnax That's lots.
@MattЭллен Yes.

4:53 PM
@Cerberus Three too many.

@Cerberus then it'll wait :)

@Mahnax You're mild today.
Only three.

@Cerberus Well, being alone in the house might get boring sometimes.

@MattЭллен OK, because you will be addicted after a day, I guarantee.

Also, I don't want to be one of those spoiled single children who gets anything they want.
Not that my parents would do that, but still.

4:54 PM
@MattЭллен Without rooting, you can have your phone turn on and off by hovering your hand over it for a very short (configurable min/max) time.
@Mahnax As you get older, the disadvantages of siblings melt away, and they become nice additions.

@Cerberus interesting

Or waving over the sensor a number of times at a frequency you set.

@Cerberus If you say so. I'm just thinking that it'll turn into some loud, awful family get-togethers.

@Cerberus by phone do you mean screen? Only if the phone is off then it can't detect anyting

I find hover to lock and swipe to unlock the most efficient methods, after some testing.

4:56 PM
But if I'm in another country…

@MattЭллен If it is powered off, then of course it can't see anything. But when it is in deep sleep with the screen off, it can, and that uses hardly any battery.

@Mahnax They will become less loud, and you will find them more enjoyable.
You know, even after a week the swiping is still actually fun.

@Cerberus OK.

@Mahnax you say that now, but you could have a pony!

4:58 PM
@MattЭллен Rats!

I do it automatically to turn on the screen when I need to all day long, and I also do it sometimes just for fun.

yes and rats too!

@MattЭллен Uhhh room for a pony.
(Which is the most brilliant line ever written for TV comedy btw.)
So deliciously vacuous.
In more than one way.
Now I'm going to watch Hyacinth on YT.

I'm trying to figure out Edmonton's bussing system.

5:03 PM
It sucks.
That I found out.
You need taxis to get anywhere off the main routes.

I can't figure this out at all.
I just need to take a bus from West Edmonton Mall to the U of A. How hard could that be?!

@Mahnax Use Google Maps.

I used that.

5:04 PM
@Cerberus For bussing?

Me too

For Edmonton.

Huh.

Yes.

Oh, well I use it for Oxford, but same diff

5:05 PM
It doesn't work everywhere in my country, only in a few cities (though it works with all trains).
It is of course possible that it doesn't know a certain line, I couldn't check that.

Hm, it's not very helpful because I need to know the schedule for a few nights from now, not this morning.
Oh, wait.
sees obvious form
Ooh, this route has the LRT.

Last Rites Treatment?! oh dear

Light Rail Transit.

Oh, uh, right, I knew that. ahem

Heh.
Oh, I guess West Ed -> U of A -> here isn't going to work.

5:14 PM
no, it's going to here
unless here is work
somedays...

Oh, yay! This route will do.

Now, be sure not to wonder off the path. you know what happened to Red Riding Hood.

I'll remember that. There will be six people with me, BTW.

Doesn't she look smart.
What a graceful outfit.

lol
> I've known him throb away quietly even in repose!

5:31 PM
Is that a quotation from Hyacinth?

yeah :D

She is magnificent.

They turned Romney into a meme.
It's kind of funny sometimes.
"Relatable Romney," they call it.
I'm off to have lunch, bye!

5:47 PM
Cya!

user19161
@Mahnax Have a good lunch!

user19161
@MattЭллен He looks very nice in that pose.

6:07 PM
How to do a wraparound?

@DavidWallace Yes, that's sort of what I was trying to say, but I don't know if 'uneducated' is the right word. Using slang or non-standard items (by a native speaker (L1)) is usually in the informal uneducated direction, but is accepted by the informal community. But if a NNS (L2) with a foreign accent tries it, it just sounds wrong/ungrammatical...
, just not informal or formal or uneducated, just plain wrong (maybe uneducated in the sense of lacking enough fluency/experience/higher education in the foreign language English)

6:39 PM
@DavidWallace: I just heard a news story in which Auckland, NZ had to replace dozens of pole-mounted "No Parking" signs because they had been ruined by prostitutes doing pole dances. Does that sound right? And wouldn't a pole-dancing prostitute discourage parking anyway?

Q: Could Count People Here

7:12 PM
@simchona I conclude now after several sessions of attempted diagnosis that he is a psychopath. QED.

@jasper the comments on his latest sock show he wants "justice" but fails to read email until you point out that he was suspended

user19161
@simchona Just ignore him, and be careful of such people. You don't know what they will do next.

I have a question.
Hullo.
I've heard "I am no expert", so is it correct to say "I am yes expert"?

user19161
@Gigili I am no expert is correct. I am yes expert is wrong.

Why?
What about "I am not sure expert"?

user19161
7:24 PM
@Gigili Also wrong.

user19161
@Gigili Just because.

That's no reason.

user19161
@Gigili Most things in this world are beyond reason.

Pliz helpi mio outio.
@JasperLoy That doesn't make sense.

Jun 7 at 11:44, by Gigili
It's like asking why apple is red.

user19161
7:27 PM
@Vitaly Haha, I was about to say that!

"I'm no X" isn't using "no" like a typical affirmative

@Vitaly she nodded wisely
Do you really think I am asking that question?

user19161
@Gigili Why are you referring to yourself in the third person now?

It's like "I'm quite an X"

user19161
@Gigili Just in case. But someone like John Lawler might be able to give you some complicated reason beyond us.

7:32 PM
Next you'll be telling me I'm NS.

user19161
@Gigili We need to rid NS with Norton antiviruS.

Do what you need, seriously.

cpx
According to the answer sheet for an exercise, in following sentence "Wild animals can be dangerous." The word 'wild' is an adjective but dangerous is not.
But I think it is. so, the answer given is wrong, right?

user19161
@cpx I think both are adjectives there, clearly.

cpx
It's rare for me to see a mistake in that answer sheet, I just wanted to make very sure.

user19161
7:46 PM
@cpx But note I am not an English expert, I am just offering my humble opinion.

cpx
@JasperLoy Yes, I think the same.

@cpx Dangerous is an adjective, surely, but not necessarily an adjective modifying animals. What are the full directions / question / prompt for the exercise?

user19161
@MetaEd I am curious why you said that. If it does not refer to animals what can it refer to?

cpx
@MetaEd "Underline the adjectives in each of the sentences below. Some of the nouns will be modified by more than one adjective."

@cpx I would surely underline dangerous, given that question.
@JasperLoy Some people might parse that sentence with an implicit noun at the end. While arguably that noun would also be animals, it would not be the same animals.
