5:02 PM
Hi!
I have a nice MC question for y'all.
Acquit means: 1. carry, 2. unearth, 3. value, 4. corner.

Uhh I didn't know it meant any of those.
It's like clear, release. Like in court. That's the only sense I am really familiar with, I guess. Hmm.

@aediaλ Thanks!
It is an awful question.

Does it mean one of those things? If I had to guess I would say 1.

They were thinking of acquit oneself as discharge one's duties.

I have some feeling that somebody can acquit themselves in a way, like behave or act, and that's kind of like carry

5:16 PM
Yes.

Ah.

Acquit also means to perform in a manner that is or is not up to someone else's expectations, or to relate the story of such performance.

So do you think it is a good question?
@Robusto But you need oneself.

What does MC stand for?

No, I think it's a confusing and bad question. It should be scolded.

5:17 PM
Multiple-Choice.

@Cerberus — Yes, it is reflexive.

Multiple choice?
Haha.

@aediaλ Thanks! I have done so.

Oh. Well, It's a poor question.

OK, then we are agreed.
Vitaly seemed to find it acceptable.
Then again, it didn't help that I got it wrong and he right.

5:18 PM
The closest thing to a legitimate answer would be 1.
But that is also the reflexive version.
He carried himself well => He acquitted himself well.
But it's a bit of a stretch.

The thing is, because I couldn't match it up with any of the answers correctly, I thought perhaps it meant something I had never heard of at all, so I clicked at random.
@Robusto Yeah I agree.
But Vit says they can only use single words in answers.
So that might explain it.

What test is this?

Oh, FFS.
That is not a true measure of vocabulary.

What?
@Robusto Oh, but did anybody say so?

5:21 PM
I was thinking of that online vocab twitch game Vit was cheating at earlier.

Oh?
What is that?
Remit:
I am not terribly happy with this either.

range 1. Suspect 2. Struggle. 3. Afford 4. Roll.

Oh for goodness' sake.
I just got that yeah.

The definition is dumbed down to something that doesn't mean exactly what it should.

They give Roll as the answer, but that is only true in a very tangential sense.

5:24 PM
@Robusto Haha, wow. No freaking clue.

I couldn't get it; I clicked "word in the wild" to get examples in context and I STILL didn't understand how on earth they were making the connection.

It is like a cryptogram.
@aediaλ Thank you! Then I'm not crazy for not getting some of those questions.

The examples in context were not even using it as a verb.

Haha.

It was like "Perry blah blah blah at the shooting range" and I was like lolwut?

5:26 PM
At the shooting afford, yes, makes perfect sense.

No no no, the shooting roll!
Attila the Bun!

I'm on a shooting roll?
@aediaλ Haha, what?

They also define frustrate as treat cruelly ... who writes this shit anyway?

@Robusto Yeah that is awful. I couldn't bring myself to click on that.

5:29 PM
treat cruelly is a by-product of frustrate, not a concise example or synonym.

@aediaλ Haha wtf.

You can treat someone cruelly by frustrating them, but there are countless other ways to do that as well.

@Robusto Yes, it is just wrong.
Exactly.

Also, you can frustrate someone without treating them cruelly.
What a load of crap.

Indeed, especially if you are a lifeless object.

5:31 PM
You can frustrate your 4-year-old's ambition to eat all the ice cream in the freezer, but that can't be construed as cruelty.

How very parenty of you. Of course that is cruel.

5:42 PM
@Cerberus — Well, then he can sue me.

sues

user19161
How come MC is not listed as an abbreviation for medical certificate in my dictionary?

Panic!

user19161
It only says so for master of ceremonies.

user19161
@Cerberus Is it common to use MC for medical certificate there?

5:47 PM
Not really: I don't even know what it entails.

It can also refer to myocardial.

user19161
Or Member of Congress.

user19161
But here it definitely means medical certificate first and foremost.

user19161
@Cerberus What program is that?

user19161
@Cerberus I thought it was one of your browser addons.

Not necessary.
Of course I use a script and keyworded bookmark to quickly search for it.

6:02 PM
One day, Cerb's computer will break and we'll find out he actually only knows a dialect of English that has become mutually incomprehensible with ours. "qqy qqu qqno qqhier?" he will type plaintively, I imagine, but we will be at a loss without the computer intermediary to translate for us.
2

Haha, yes, could be any day now.

`Actually what will come out will be "woof woof grrr woof" or barks to that effect.

Though the correct morphological aspect of my dialect would have qq at the end of words.

So all your words are reduced to tears in the end?

Yes, but it will be your tears.

6:08 PM
Only if you bite me.

bites

Ya missed me. Try again.
My firewall is effective at blocking dog bites.

bites in three dimensions

Nope. Didn't get through. Are you sure you're trying hard enough?

tries hard

6:09 PM
hides behind rainbow

sucks in rainbow

You can't devour the whole rainbow! It doesn't have an end.

Warms marshmellows.

@aediaλ eats pot of gold too
and delicious, juicy gnomes
muses Somehow small mammals are the juiciest.

Gnomes?

6:15 PM
@kiamlaluno You need some remedial spalling.

@Cerberus I think you mean leprechauns.

@Robusto Why?

Look up marshmallow.

@aediaλ Oh, yes, those guys.

@Cerberus It does turn out, though, that the best gnome book evah was Dutch to begin with.
They do look juicy.

6:20 PM
Gnomegusta.

@Robusto groans

@aediaλ — What is Spanish for thwack?

Oh God, not David de Kabouter.
I didn't know he was Dutch.

@Robusto No sé. I can't think of anything with quite the same feel... to dar una golpe is to throw a punch or slap. But I'm sure there is a more colloquial alternative.

@Cerberus Did you think he was Chinese? :-)

6:29 PM
@MattЭллен I wouldn't take you seriously anyway. Although we could get in a slappy fight for fun, if you want.

@kiamlaluno Ehh not specifically! But he could have come from anywhere.

OMG, the gnome book!

@Kitḫ Hi!

@Cerberus Ohai!

Funnily enough, a gnoom is an ugly creature in Dutch, more like Gollum.
And a kabouter is, well, exactly this.
BRB groceries.

6:31 PM
@Kitḫ excellent! Handbags at dawn it is then ;)

Most oddly, I had a Czernobog "gnome" doll when I was a girl that looked remarkably like those.

Hi!

Hi!

I never had a gnome doll, but I had the book practically memorized and used to imagine they were real.

@Cerberus So, is he a generic Chinese?

6:33 PM
I also was mad when the tv show happened because of all kinds of little ways it was different from the book.

I think the oddest bit is that I had a doll of a god of death and destruction, but way to miss the point everyone.
:P

I didn't know!

Funny though, innit?

Chernobog is a Slavic deity, about whom much has been speculated but little can be said definitively. The name may also be given as Crnobog, Czernobóg, Černobog, Црнобог, Zernebog and Чернобог, meaning black god. The only historical sources, which are Christian ones, interpret him as a dark, accursed god, but it is questionable how important (or evil) he was really considered to be by ancient Slavs. The name is attested only among West Slavic tribes of the 12th century, hence it is speculated that he was not a very important or very old deity. Sources One historic source on Slavic myth...

I apparently should have gotten the reference, because Wiki sez Czernobog shows up in Fantasia in Night on Bald Mountain as well as in American Gods, but I guess I have a terrible memory.

6:36 PM
Yeah, they were a pair, Czernobog and Bielobog.
Nah, no one ever knows them.
Well, actually, you ought to have known from reading American Gods.
He was a fairly major player in that book.

is it good? have I asked you that before?

I liked it.
A lot.
But I am a big, big fan of Neil Gaiman.
It's one of his better works.

Keeps warming marshmellows.

Huh? Marsh mellows?
Althaea is a genus of 6-12 species of perennial herbs native to Europe and western Asia. It includes Althaea officinalis, also known as the marshmallow plant, whence the fluffy confection got its name. They are found on the banks of rivers and in salt marshes, preferring moist, sandy soils. The stems grow to 1–2 m tall, and flower in mid summer. The leaves are palmately lobed with 3-7 lobes. Althaea species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Bucculatrix quadrigemina. Species The genus formerly included a number of additional species now trea...

I loved American Gods

6:41 PM
Good Omens is still my favorite.

Loved that one too.

better than Neverwhere? I love that one, but I've only read that and Good Omens

Did you see Neverwhere the show?
It's worth it.

On par with Neverwhere. More expansive, less personal journey.

a long time ago, but yes

6:43 PM
I don't remember which I read before I knew who Neil gaiman was

You never read The Sandman series?

not so far!

Whoa, just finished American Gods last night, I sign on, and there's Chernobog staring me in the face.

Heh heh.

It's like fate.

6:44 PM
So you know why it's weird that I had a Czernobog doll when I was a girl.

We're drawn to ELU in mysterious ways...

You had a doll?

Yup. Looked like one of those gnomes.

I need to reread the book to picture him as a gnome.

Was it an action figure that came with a hammer in a briefcase?

6:46 PM
LOL. No.
Just a stuffy.

@Kitḫ I prefer them to marshmallows.

He was my favorite for about a year until I got Salami Doggy.
Which I believe was a dachshund that my grammy crocheted.

That was a fun read, I was drawn in via Pratchett...read Good Omens, which they coauthored.

Yup.
6 mins ago, by Kitḫ
Good Omens is still my favorite.
The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
Also my favorite review ever: "The Apocalypse has never been funnier."

the good thing about that one is that it really is a blend of styles..more whimsical than Gaiman, darker than Pratchett, w/o looking like two people did it.

6:50 PM
I agree. Quite impressive.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to keep it in my collection.
I've thrice bought it, and thrice it has gone unreturned.

If this gets through, we're going to have a million GR questions:
0
Q: Where do I ask about adding a tag?

Wolfpack'08I thought it would be nice to have the transformation tag added and possibly linked to word-choice because sometimes I know a word and want to get it into another form.... I don't know the word in the other form. I think that's commonly known as transforming a word.

@kit luckily, it's in trade paperback

Hey, American Gods and Neverwhere, two of my favourite books!

Then I encourage you to read JSB's novella.

I got American Gods on my Kindle from the library, first time I did that...good price, that.

7:00 PM
@Kitḫ Yeah I'm waiting for the paperback

I really like JSB's writing style, and call me crazy, but I think it is not unlike Neil Gaiman.

@Kitḫ I don't think that's a crazy comparison, based on what I've read

Did you read The Judge's Right Hand?

I did! I did!

@Kitḫ with those things that were like angels? yeah

7:07 PM
Well, it inspired me to start writing again.
So if I ever finish any of my books, I'll have JSB to thank for it.

@Kitḫ cool! If you ever finish one of your books, I might be forced to finish mine! and then I'd have JSB once-removed to thank for it too!

Hahaha!
Now I feel the pressure...

start with a second blog post!

I have a second one started. It's a writing exercise.
I haven't finished it yet though, on account of the insomnia.
Also, a couple of toys to play with: We were talking about sonnets the other day in Linguistics, so I thought I might write a couple.

@Kitḫ you can't sleep, so you stay up late NOT writing? :)

7:12 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Sad but true.
I spend my time in chat instead.
Lame, I know.

@Kitḫ nah, it's ok, I'm not judging. I'm certainly not a prolific blog poster myself.
I was on a roll, once, but it was unsustainable.

I have never liked the idea of blogging. I hate the word "blog" and I hate that they are used as 'legitimate' news sources.

hey, @Kit, you might find this funny: on Sunday my daughter and my son (who's not allowed to watch TV because he's too young) were playing in the TV room. Daughter: "Daddy, can I watch TV?" Me: "No, your brother is too young." Daughter: (to brother): "Daddy's calling you!"

"Sum1 on teh interwebs sed that Obama iz stoopid, so it must b troo."

@MrShinyandNew安宇 How subtle!

7:15 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Ha ha ha. See? Tactical thinking. She's definitely ahead in her cognitive development.

@Kitḫ ah, come on. In the old days it was exactly the same with paper. Rogue printing shops would distribute leaflets through the streets.

Now you people are forcing me to write a book as well!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Smaller dispersal, higher rate of resource investment.
These days, pretty much anyone can do it.

@Kitḫ Too bad her brother didn't understand her and/or didn't fall for it, eh?
@Kitḫ my blog has a much smaller dispersal than those old libels

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Maybe he's sharper than she gives him credit for. Maybe he's the next Machiavelli.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 True, true, but it also costs you a lot less.
If you wanted to boost your investment, you could have as good a circulation, I bet.

7:17 PM
@Kitḫ He might be, once he learns to talk. She's not very subtle, usually, I'm sure if he wants the upper hand he's going to have to outsmart her, because she'll steamroll him otherwise.

Hmm. I bet she's shrewd enough to change her tactics when they stop working.
Maybe not yet though.

Well, she'll change tactics but what I mean is that he'll manipulate her or negotiate with her or something.
Hard to say, he's only barely talking yet. :p

Speaking of changing tactics, I'd like to take a moment to give Shanahan a nod for cracking down on head hits in the NHL.
Also, to be blatantly stereotypical as to assume that a Canadian would be interested in hockey news...

Hey, how common is the word pasquinade?

@Kitḫ yeah, actually, I know little about hockey, don't watch it, and don't follow hockey news. :)

7:22 PM
@Cerberus I haven't heard it before, except maybe from you.

@Cerberus never heard it, can you use it in a descriptive sentence?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 gasp I'm pretty sure you have to turn in your passport now.

@Kitḫ Oh! Did I use it?

@Kitḫ I didn't even watch the olympic gold medal match

@MrShinyandNew安宇 The play wasn't very good for a pasquinade.
I wasn't even sure whether I had ever seen it, and I had no idea what it meant.

7:24 PM
@Cerberus I guess not. I thought maybe in the other room, but I don't see it anywhere.

OK.

I'd have guessed it might be related to a masquerade or an esplanade, but not gatorade.

Well, the -ade part.

yeah so I still didn't understand it and, having looked up the meaning, am pretty sure that nobody uses it.

I certainly wouldn't have figured out that it was a satire.

7:26 PM
OK then it's rare.

I don't think a play could be a pasquinade though.

so the COCA has TWO hits for it.

It says written here.
So probably not very likely.

> brief and generally anonymous satirical comment in prose or verse that ridicules a contemporary leader or national event.

Hmm your definition is very specific.

7:28 PM
Now that I have read it enough, I feel like I might have heard it before.

OED: A lampoon affixed to some public place; a ‘squib’, libel, lampoon, or piece of satire generally.

Squib. I love that word.

It comes from a silly statue.

Yeah I saw that.

Ugh I quit.
That vocabulary game is terrible.
Arch = mischievous?
I mean, I can see what they mean, but it's just wrong as a definition.

7:33 PM
how can it mean mischievous?

Well, an arch remark can be a bit mischievous.
I don't like it one bit.

looks at @Cerb archly
And what vocabulary game?

Vocabulary.com, it's Vit's game.

@Cerberus I see. I don't think I've heard that before

@MattЭллен Yeah it sucks.

7:37 PM
@Cerberus He wrote it?

@Kitḫ No, no!
He plays it.
He is apparently in the daily top ten.

"an arch remark" is not that uncommon.

That's why I made it up as an example.
It was not what they had.

@aedia: Google translate gives aporrear for thwack.

So the real question is how to waste my time for the next hour or so?

7:40 PM
juggling?

Nap? Skyrim? Stupid computer stuff? Knitting?
@MattЭллен Hmm. Tea it is.

daydreaming about fornication?
621 games of freecell?

Doorbell, bye!

cya @Cerberus

@Kitḫ — I vote Skyrim.

7:42 PM
@Kitḫ good choice

@MattЭллен Hmm. That's not a bad idea. Researching "increase female libido"...

I've finished the mage quest line and am almost done with the thieves (about to kill Mercer Frey). And I'm at the point where I have to ride the dragon in the warrior quest line.

Weird flag just now.

the exploding head?

Yeah.

7:44 PM
made me laugh, so I said "maybe"

I felt it was a bit gory for a room that tends to have many minors.

ah. I didn't go deeper than looking at it

I really should have left it to others, though.
It's not any of my business what goes on there.

Q: There is no rule for pronunciation of English words, does it?

JatSingI know that there is at least one language we can pronounce based on the word's form, that's Vietnamese, means that once you know how to write it, you will also know how to pronounce it. But in English, are English words like Chinese words, means that we can not pronounce the word based on it's ...

I still have that boob pic from the Serverfault chat room.

7:46 PM
Huh?

You cut me deep just then, @Matt.

sorry! It's wasn't meant to be harsh

Oh! Wait! I was just teasing a little.

7:48 PM
hehehe, I remember that

Oh crud. I missed the edit window. I was going to tack on the time.
shrugs
Yay! Tea! Anyone else up for a cuppa?

mmm, yes please!

@simchona The first flag I ever saw was a boob pic posted in the Server Fault chat room. Or maybe the Unix chat.
@MattЭллен serves tea

thanks!
blows on tea

> The evening will include time together to enjoy each others company, enjoy good food and wine, thoroughly relax, and learn something new!

7:53 PM
Wonders if he is the same JSBangs.

Agh. I love my friend, but this evening sounds like torture to me.

@kiamlaluno you are two separate people

@MattЭллен Moi?

@kiamlaluno Vous et JSBangs
@Kitḫ maybe they will take you shooting?

@MattЭллен Oh! I meant if our JSBangs is the writer.

7:56 PM
@MattЭллен Maybe they will get naked and oiled.
And wrestle.

@MattЭллен For a second, I thought somebody else peeked at my accounts on Drupal.org.

@kiamlaluno you have two?!
@Kitḫ you can only hope :D
I was gonna suggest they might turn out to be swingers

@Kitḫ That sounds like a nightmare.

Actually, only a couple of them are my type.

Would you like to swing on a star…

7:58 PM
It's women-only. A birthday party. Probably quiche and chardonnay.

depends on the star

Learning how to knit and getting chair massages.
Except I know how to knit.

What about knicks-knacks?

@Kitḫ maybe it will be rock climbing and laser tag?

(or knick-knacks?)

7:59 PM
@MattЭллен No, it is actually a knitting circle and chair massages.

does that even exist anymore?

I think it is "lazer" tag.

@Kitḫ oh. While parachuting?

And I don't know.

@Kitḫ apparently not in England
