Hey @IsmaelMiguel - thanks for joining in here (cc @Lyle'sMug )

Welcome to the 2nd Monitor!

@rolfl It's the least I could do

°/ @IsmaelMiguel

@DJanssens ?

I just wanted to make sure you understood that, when you have a 'code block' in Stack Exchange... the markdown has 4-spaces at the line start
But, the 'Body' column does not store the markdown, it stores the generated HTML

2:02 PM
what pieces?

@IsmaelMiguel it's a waving hand. Just wanted to say hello ;)

@DJanssens it doesn't look like a waving hand.....

pieces?
@IsmaelMiguel - people talk/chat in here quite fast. Most of the chat is crap, so you can ignore it ;-)
4

I'm used to this chat
I've used it before

OK, so, when you use the normal way to create markdown content in a StackExchange post, you indent the code with 4 spaces, right?
I know there are other ways, but the "normal" way is 4 spaces)

2:07 PM
Yes, the normal way

When stack exchange gets markdown like that, it converts the markdown to HTML, and then saves that HTML in the Body column on the Posts table.

I was just showing that not always people will use the 'normal way'
But the alternative is still perfectly valid to every single standard

the way it encodes that block, it always generates a <pre ... ><code> .... </code></pre> structure
So, we agree that the query will identify every "normal" code blocks as being OK, and it will identify some edge case problem codes as being OK as well.... (some false negatives).
(false negatives like people having the </code></pre> in their text somewhere that's not part of a code block)
Then, the query will identify real positives, like where there really is no code....
that's what we are looking for, the real issues.... but....

@Lyle'sMug It was a play on words on yours and Mat's username.

the query will identify false positives too, which is what you've pointed out, @IsmaelMiguel - those times when people do in fact have code, but it is formatted using not-normal code blocks

2:12 PM
@Lyle'sMug going to post "You've been mugged!" on awesome answers you guys post.
4

@DJanssens @rubberduck203 I follow some interesting people. Most of what I share is software related. (but the vba stuff might bore you to tears)

In the case of those false positives, the thing is, that editing the actual question to use the normal system solves both the false-positive, and it improves the site as a whole.

Thanks @RubberDuck :)

In a sense, there's a choice to be made when there's no "normal" code in the question - edit the question to make not-normal code normal, or close the question as off-topic.
2
either option is useful

Close, imo.

2:16 PM
@Legato I like that! lol would be better if you commented on posts where @Mat'sMug or I have stolen a checkmark or have answered after someone else and have accumulated more upvotes...lol

Hahaha
Will do.

@rolfl You forgot Groovy ;)

This looks like code review and SO is not for code review, if you are looking for code review, then code review is the place for reviewing code — musefan 44 secs ago

Sorry the delay, I have a ton of work now
But, the 'normal' code will generate low-quality code.

Hmmm... are you saying that the way that stack exchange converts code in questions in to HTML is low quality... actually, I am not sure I follow at all.
I need to get to a meeting too
BBIAB

2:31 PM
What I meant is that <pre><code> is low-quality HTML, since it has no identation what-so-ever.

it isn't low quality HTML it has low readability, but we aren't trying to read or write the HTML code. the markup does all the writing for us.

Q: Can this simple percentage calculator be further optimized?

delitapublic double getValueWithPercentage(double number, double percentage) { return number + ((percentage / 100.0) * number); } Are there any tricks to optimize this simple code?

@IsmaelMiguel staaahp... that's markdown standard...

That question has the following markdown:
    public double getValueWithPercentage(double number, double percentage)
    {
        return number + ((percentage / 100.0) * number);
    }

Are there any tricks to optimize this simple code?

2:37 PM
and the indentation is exactly what you need to do in the codeblock anyways

In the database, the Body column looks like:
<pre><code>public double getValueWithPercentage(double number, double percentage)
{
    return number + ((percentage / 100.0) * number);
}
</code></pre>

<p>Are there any tricks to optimize this simple code?</p>

<pre><code> is missing the identation.
That is what I meant by 'low-quality code'.

Why does it need it?

@IsmaelMiguel machine generated HTML doesn't have to look nice as source-code

2:41 PM
when we see people trying to write the HTML themselves, we remove it and add markup, because otherwise there could be unintended results because of all the wonderful things that stack exchange uses to create the network of sites.

it should look nice as rendered

My internet is lagging bad

'Your' internet?

yeah, maybe I should go and shake the box a little bit.

@Vogel612 True, but still. You know what I meant.

2:43 PM
@IsmaelMiguel no I don't..

me neither.... I think that's the problem

I don't understand why you consider machine generated HTML markup to require indentation...

Well, I have 2 questions:
1- Is it on topic to ask reviews on Tex?

@Lyle'sMug I watched season 2 episode 5 of IT Crowd today.

@IsmaelMiguel there is an entire stack site for Tex, so there wouldn't really be a purpose to post it here

also that ^^^

the last sentence of the answer to the Meta question you posted

Well, I guess that Tex reviews are off-topic everywhere?

most of the questions you would most likely have about Tex would probably be on-topic there.

Well, I would just include a class to spit some Tex.
I've written a function to make an hexdump.
But I've decided to rewrite it
The idea was to make a class to output only text-based tables
Other for HTML
And another for Tex, using tabular

Btw, remember that meta post to make a code review 'banner'?

@Mat'sMug To me, it looks like a unicorn barfed a piece of heaven in form of code.

Analogies FTW:
While you are correct that speed may not be the problem, the truth is that the algorithm you chose affects more than just the speed, but the code size, the confusions, and other improvements..... what you are saying is: I have driven this race course with my eyes open, so now I want to drive it with my eyes closed.... what can I do to improve my driving style (but don't tell me to open my eyes because I have done that before!)rolfl ♦ 59 secs ago

    boolean[] treaded = new boolean[size];
    // treaded or not?
    Arrays.fill(treaded, false);// not travelled anywhere, this could be avoided since default values and all that, but for clearance I wrote it
    int max = 1;// maximum is greater than 1
    int depth = 0;// depth to which we have reached
I just did in:
    int[] previous = new int[triangle.length + 1];

The difference is that most languages should try to hurt neither (but often fail at one or both), while Brainfuck was designed explicitly to hurt both.

@IsmaelMiguel I think he's gone, Brainfuck took him away from us

@skiwi I like brainfuck, I like code-golfing and I like to write high-quality code.
I think there's nothing wrong with that.

5:50 PM
I hope you're not doing them at the same time

@Mat'sMug Lol, I didn't realize there was a spam discussion going on. Talk about timing

@skiwi I like brainfuck, I like code-golfing and I like to write high-quality code.
One day I will see a situation where all three are juxtaposed.
3

@skiwi I actually am!

@rolfl Appareantly that day is today

@rolfl Define "juxtaposed"
@skiwi For over 3 years

5:52 PM
all three together at the same time.

@IsmaelMiguel So... I'm not the only one who had to google that

@rolfl Well, I'm being brainf***ed all the time. Then I golf a bit in PHP while, at the same time, I write my own real projects.
@skiwi Can't know everything
@rolfl But yes, I like brainfuck

The concept of brainfuck is good - a turing-complete system that teaches a tape-progression process... it's good for the human mind to think in different ways.
the purpose of it is not great though... to create obuscated code.

@rolfl JavaScript thought that was a good idea, too

there should be a better way to have the benefits, without the drawbacks.
(and no, the better way is not Javascript).

5:55 PM
@rolfl The beneficts is to use fortran
*best

maybe ;-) ^^^
just don't say lisp .....

As far as I know, fortran was tape-based

(or COBOL)

I'm not a huge fan of lisp
And I don't like cobol
Specially PortuGOL
(COBOL in Portuguese)

Hmmm... learn something... never knew that existed.

5:56 PM
Sadly, it does...
You will need google translator on that

points for the almost-homonym with Portugal, though

@rolfl Here's an example for you:

inicio
    caracter sexo
    escrever "Qual o seu sexo :"
    ler sexo
    escrever "Olá "
    escolhe sexo
        caso "m" :
            escrever "Homem"
        caso "f" :
            escrever "Mulher"
        defeito :
            escrever "Sexo indefinido"
    fimescolhe
    escrever ", bemvindo ao portugol"
fim
Crap
@DanLyons The what?

PortuGOL sounds like Portugal :P

That's the idea!

Or Portuguy?

6:00 PM
And it's awful

instead of gal?

Well.... That's stretching a lot
brb
(30 minutes)

the awful was implied by the COBOL
3

DISPLAY "COBOL can be fun" UPON SYSOUT

COBOL programmers don't write code. The comments are compiled and executed.

6:03 PM
IDENTIFICATION DIVISION: hmmm.... no thanks.

@FreeMan So COBOL is actually a language from the future?
3

@skiwi something's not right with that statement

Monkernoon

@rolfl I'm not sure the purpose of BF is to create obfuscated code.

depends on context - maybe SkyNet sent COBOL back from the future to weaken developers, making them incapable of reprogramming the T-800s and change the outcome of the war

6:09 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Maybe it is just one of the reasons... sure.
It is a novel approach, and it is compact.... but not compact enough to be golfing code.

@SimonAndréForsberg BF has a purpose?
3

@rolfl To actually accomplish anything reasonably useful in BF, it doesn't get compact at all

I need to write a BF interpreter in LOLCODE.

-1

even if the output is Swift?
aw, was done before
HAI
BTW This is a BrainFuck interpreter written in LOLCode
BTW It accepts as input a BF program, followed by a "!", followed by any input to the BF program.
BTW Since BrainFuck is turing-complete, this proves that LOLCode is too

I HAS A INSTRUCTIONS BTW Array for BF instructions
I HAS A IPTR BTW Pointer to first empty element in INSTRUCTIONS
IPTR R 0
I HAS A LOOPZ BTW Array of loop start/end addresses
I HAS A LOOPSTACKZ BTW Loop stack for building the above two
^ downvote this
ironically I got a late +5 on that fizzbuzz post today

6:28 PM
@skiwi I hope not!

Thanks santas.

@Mat'sMug Downvoting on chat... Well played

You can't downvote in the chat

no shit
;-)

I've investigated and indeed it is not shit.

Confucius say: constipation not real.... people just full of shit.

...And now we talk about shit...

6:49 PM
Yeah, probably not appropriate... we could talk about...... ?

Stop being vulgar - it isn't becoming.

@Hosch250 I'm a monkey.

But I program in php...

Still isn't becoming.

Fine, crap, you're right.
I should just dump that stuff

6:50 PM
json.dumps(dinner)

Yeah, dump it please

@CaptainObvious now's the time to dump your stuff

@RubberDuck How do you want me to send the VB code?

@IsmaelMiguel put it up on CR!

@Mat'sMug You'll kill me!

6:57 PM
lol
it'll be !

It's below pooh quality
Trust me, it is horribly horrible

pretend Winnie wrote it don't. has to be your code
post a selfie along with it then

Nope, that would destroy the servers
