Q: scala validation macro

user833970I would like a review of a Scala validation library I am writing. For now we can focus on the regular expression component. The usage is described in RegexExample.scala There is an outline of the interface in RegexRuntime.scala But the macro and most of the craziness lives in RegexValidator.sc...

@Hosch250 did you fix your searchBox issue? I got busy

@200_success Closed is good.
It is ypothetical code, despite his assertion otherwise.
It is also not a request for a code review, but a discussion of a specific programming problem.
That question would be a decent question on SO
There's no surprise that "this question is similar to that" points to a similar SO question
If anything should be changed, it should just be migrated.
and that's night time for me.

@drent, glad this helped. There's a few other things about this code that could be improved, once you have it working you might want to make a post on codereview.stackexchange.com if you are looking for more opportunities to improve it. — shuttle87 30 secs ago

@200_success any idea how to translate "repository" in French? (as in "GitHub repository")

"Dépôt" seems to be the preferred term.

I feared it would be the case

"Feared"?

"dépôt" sounds like some kind of tartar that accumulates in your code if you don't brush it every day
the black stuff that falls to the bottom overnight

4:02 AM
Do you ever deposit money in your bank account?

there's that

@Mehrad Yes.

"stargazers" -> "astronomes" ...not sure about that one

@Mat'sMug Lol.
Don't you have a similar figure of speech?
Don't translate it literally...

@Hosch250 you know, there's a reason I left the About window unlocalized ;)

4:06 AM
Good thing I did it then.

"stargazers, likers & followers" > "supporters, supporters et supporters"
...or partisans actually

@Mat'sMug Is there not a "depositoire" (sorry missing accents, English kb) word?

not that I know of

> astronomes, likers & adeptes

although it does sound more accurate
lol astronomes

I don't know what to make of that one.

"Etoiles, fans et partisans"

But we are the stars.

(not literal translation, but "stargazers" makes no sense in French context

Lol.

Is there a French.SE?

@Mat'sMug LMAO

Why don't you ask if there is an idiom (?) that means the same thing as "Stargazers"

They'll say it's "astronome" and probably LMGTFY
@Mat'sMug +1 for that one

I've seen requests for translating proverbs on the English sites.

4:14 AM
"warm fuzzies" is problematic

Cool. Translating is harder than one would think. But I think "stargazers" is too CR-specific to be even remotely relevant to French RD fans

Q: Is there an English equivalent to this Japanese proverb?

RachelmortMy boss asked me if his translation of a Japanese proverb was accurate the other day. Unfortunately, I don't have the Japanese written down with me, but I can describe it. @Phrancis Nope. never heard of it. Must be really bad

Stake 'N Shake. nom
Okay food. Awful customer service.

@Mehrad I don't recommend it to my friends. They have OK rep, AFAIK, but I've never had a meal there I would classify as enjoyable

@Phrancis You know how clean I eat and all but honestly I don't hate maccers really. It was occasions such as when I was moving the house and nothing to cook with and nowhere open and I grabbed some maccers. Not saying it was good but I won't say it was bad either. At least it's clean

Is "maccers" code for McDonald's food?
(sorry, not familiar with that lingo :)

That's what we call it here :D

4:53 AM
Gotcha

I mean I am comparing with a deep fried sausage sitting under the heat lamp from a servo

McD is not too bad, not too good either. It fills the stomach though, and yes, very very clean

@Phrancis Yes, unhealthy, high calorie and preservatives and some unknown substitutes for beef but at least you don't get food poisoned :D

But yeah, that burger from the other place... it had literally nothing besides bread, beef, cheese and bacon

@Phrancis Free pass to a heart surgery :D

@Phrancis Oh... you're a smoker! Bad ass :D
I don't think anybody affords to smoke in here

I'm from Canada, it's like that there too

yup. $50+ for a 50g pouch of tobacco

Here in the USA it's not so bad, but still kinda expensive bad habit
@mjolka WUT...

@mjolka premium pack $12 for 25 cigarettes

$4 and change for regular pack of cigarettes here (20 units)...
$6 if you want fancy Marlboros

@Phrancis :O

I am not a smoker so my numbers might be wrong but apparently a moderate smoking in here can cost you around 50-70 dollars a week
at least from what I've been told

@Phrancis $10.50 for my Peter Jacksons

5:02 AM
Damn

(25)

spot-on -- smoking rollies costs about $60/week

@Mat'sMug It was high last time I went, about 4 years ago, but don't think that high

I guess killing yourself slowly is cheaper in USA.

drop bears are fast and free

lol

uh, what are those?

lol

-.-
deeply confused

5:05 AM
looks like a koala

Right. Do they just... drop from trees?

A dropbear or drop bear is a fictitious Australian marsupial. Drop bears are commonly said to be unusually large, vicious, carnivorous marsupials related to koalas (although the koala is not a bear) that inhabit treetops and attack their prey by dropping onto their heads from above. They are an example of local lore intended to frighten and confuse outsiders and amuse locals, similar to the jackalope, hoop snake, wild haggis or snipe. Stories of attacks by the fictional animal are commonly told to scare tourists. Various methods suggested to deter drop bear attacks include placing forks in the...

Oh, it's like a jackalope!
The jackalope is a mythical animal of North American folklore (a so-called fearsome critter) described as a jackrabbit with antelope horns. The word "jackalope" is a portmanteau of "jackrabbit" and "antelope", although the jackrabbit is not a rabbit, and the American antelope is not an antelope. Also, many jackalope taxidermy mounts, including the original, are actually made with deer antlers. In the 1930s, Douglas Herrick and his brother, hunters with taxidermy skills, popularized the American jackalope by grafting deer antlers onto a jackrabbit carcass and selling the combination to a local hotel...

@Phrancis if "pull" is "tirer", then "fetch" would be ...?

There is lots of controversy around it. Some say they are fiction but some would say they have seen one but before they died.
@Phrancis hahah... seems stories are different around the world but people are the same :D

Hi @blackbee

are scala noob questions ask-able here ?
@Phrancis morning :P

@blackbee I don't think we have any Scala experts around right now, you're welcome to ask but might be a while before you get a response

I don't think there's any scalartist around at this time

I dun't mind waiting :)

5:12 AM
If you have a technical problem, probably better on Stack Overflow, but general questions sure

ow, SO doesn't have a scala room
ideone.com/kdhRR1 I am not able to get the syntax correct, I was reading the book Functional Programming in Scala. I am not being able to call the binarySerach method correctly.

monking @all

monking!
note to self: when it's monking in Australia, that should be your cue to go to bed...

@blackbee I don't know Scala, but that naked mid looks weird to me, generally
if(!gt(d, key) && !get(key, d)) mid

^^ suspicious to my non-functional eyes too.
...
that doesn't read as I intended it to

5:17 AM
lol
@blackbee I think you should improve your naming of variables a bit, gt is not a very good name

@Phrancis I think gt might be the language operator for "greater than"

ok, gt is greater than

might be

like in html > < :P

> spoj: The program compiled successfully, but Main.class was not found.
Class Main should contain method: def main(args: Array[String]).
@blackbee Does it work in your Scala IDE, but not on Ideone?

5:22 AM
I generally use eclpise , the one which comes with the scala sdk.. so until I find a way to write that binarySearch(arr, 1, ((x, y) => x < y)) line correctly it won't compile

@blackbee in if(!gt(d, key) && !get(key, d)) mid, get should be gt
seems you need to declare the return type of go: def go(low: Int, mid: Int, high: Int): Int

yeah, thats a typo, sorry

and declare the types when you call binarySearch: binarySearch(arr, 1, ((x:Int, y:Int) => x < y))

ok I am checking

5:42 AM
ok, I have got the correct code, now I will try figuring out how to pass a function that takes a function.. if I can't I will be back
