yep, what's with it?

it's not a trivial problem

It is with my solution combined with David Conrad's comment

your solution is provably incorrect
Apache's solution is provably correct
OP is of course free to choose whatever he wants
I'm just stating what I'd choose
don't mind me that much :)
I'm paranoid and whenever I see code I usually start trying to find out how it could break

12:17 AM
why does code on SO look so terrible? the styling on CR is much nicer

(I also don't like hacks like that)
(I've got a team near me that's still taking a different road whenever they do something about <important thing>, because of a hack like that, performed 3 years ago)
it propagated a bit too far and it would mean changing too much to get rid of it
and yeah, at the root, it was about hardcoding a string that was sure to not be needed anywhere or entered by anyone, ever :P

12:34 AM
@AlexM. dare i ask what string they chose?

can't remember the exact details, so it was probably not a very interesting string

:(

heard about it from the new guy who joined my team

i vaguely remember my old boss used U+1F4A9 as a "won't ever occur" character. can't remember if it made it into production

can't even remember why he brought it up, but it was essentially along the lines of "we didn't have time to finish this so we just hardcoded this value (string) for all <things> and assumed that no one would ever need it"
whoa, firefox displays colored piles of poop
2
chrome didn't do that

hey guys
is there an specific name for listviews in the UI which they don't follow the traditional row column with headers and instead each line has it's own details?

@Mehrad in WPF that's still a ListView ;)
or could be a TreeView

a listview with two columns, one for the elements, one for the details, with the column titles hidden

No I mean I wanna design UI similar to this

1:30 AM
@mjolka because when you post your code on SO, you want it to "just work". When you post your code on CR, you want to to be great code, i.e. you care enough about what your code looks like, to go beyond "it works".

and I know I need to use ListView...

@Mehrad that's a listview

@Mehrad looks like a ListView to me

Yeah, that's a ListView with a custom style template

but definitaly not simillar to what I did so far with titles and binding straight to a list of items. Just need a starting point

1:31 AM
@Mehrad UITableView in iOS...

it's a listview with an adapter that uses a horizontal linear layout with two sublayouts
or at least one sublayout
I guess the time on the right can stand on its own

I just had in mind to kinda design a seperate view for a single member and then bind to a list of those views

Yeah, that's about it. You design how one element should look and pass that information along to your ListView which has a collection of the viewmodels

Found a half compelete example of similar to what I had in mind and it was using `ListCollectionView( of a field which was an obsv.coll. of single item's views) ... so I thought maybe there is a layout way to this this kind of UI
I just want to know if I am on the right track... or maybe an example to look at
@JeroenVannevel, so would you suggest to use style templates or design an element in a totally separate view like you mentioned at the end?
or a combination

Honestly I don't even know what language you're using, nor do I have much experience with UI design
I'm just pulling from the very limited stuff I saw in class

1:41 AM
it's C# ... still good ideas though. thanks anyways

C# with what?
windows forms?
WPF? GTK?
(assuming some form of .NET here)

yep wpf it is
@AlexM. .Net 4.5

doesn't WPF use the XML-like format for its UI?
is there no way to nest controls in the XML?
never used it :(

it's XAML I suppose
all good
I just want my listview to carry some good information in a preferably not traditional one liner way
except didn't know what to search to attract examples and tutorials of such sort and thought it might have a specific name or a nickname :D
like BAM list view... or NON traditional list view... :) I'll figure it out...

Google wpf listview custom itemtemplate

1:49 AM
@JeroenVannevel good suggestion. thanks :D

It's really annoying that the Spanish male "un" is pronounced the same as the French female "une"
Constantly throwing me off

It's tricky like that. Not a big fan of Spanish myself...

Meh, I can dig the language so far
Only level 4 on DuoLingo though
But I can totally tell you the boys drink milk

Maybe it's just the fact it only has 5 consonants, and relies on accentuation... like ... papá == dad... but papa == potato...

Must suck to be a family of potatoes then

I bet Spanish conversations heard by non-native speakers are confusing as fudge...

I keep imagining there are accents everywhere on the spanish words
but in reality there are much less than I seem to think

Arguably, there are probably more accents in French; however, accents in French affect the pronunciation much more drastically than in Spanish
There is such a thing as a default accent in Spanish, where if no accent is present, then the accent is placed on the second-to-last syllable
Hence the papá != papa example
One might expect pápa instead of just papa, for accentuation
(arguably, it would be easier if that were the case)

2:12 AM
isn't the last a pronounced more profoundly in the case of dad?

Other way around

it's not like French then?

Dad == PApa | Potato == paPA

gotcha
Yes, then it should definitely be the other way around

Confusing as fudge, admittedly.
Imagine teaching a toddler this pronunciation stuff. Ugh.

10:28 AM
Now I do some of my own java stuff.
Figuring out if a scanned image is an empty page.

@Heslacher If text detected == none
Depends though if you want to use an OCR as well

That exactly is the problem. The customer of our customer pays fach page which is transmitted to the archive. So I need to evaluate without OCR if the page is empty. If it is empty, just skip it.

What is the problem of using an OCR?

One possibility is to check if size is in a specific range.

You could calculate the number of strongly-connected non-white components on the image

Hey @Mat'sMug !

Hi!

Hi
@Mat's ... how do you want the output of a multi-declaration to be returned?
Const foo = 123, bar = 456
What would you want 'out' of that?

a Match object containing all captures?
You're not using the wrong hammer for the nail..... you don't have a nail, you have a screw ;-) — rolfl 2 mins ago

2:35 PM
I got the vodka..... you got the OJ?
2

lol
2

@rolfl I've got OJ.

Ar eyou just looking for the variable names? or the values too?

I'm correctly matching Dim foo As Integer, bar As Long
the problem is because of the = 123 part, more specifically when it's a String
ideally I'd pick up everything

picking up everything sounds more suited to heavy machinery than regexes

2:37 PM
Well, I don't understand your problem then.... you have everything already.

It's just regexes.

@rolfl yes, but the idea is to capture the "identifier" within the "identifier" capture group, and the "value" within the "value" capture group.
with Const foo = 123, bar = 456 I get "foo` as the "identifier", and "123, bar = 456" as the "value"...

Hmmm...... Unclear what you're asking?? =;)-

That's what I asked earlier ... ;-) But, if there's multiple capture groups, you have a problem.

:p
^((Private|Public|Global)\s)?Const\s(?<identifier>[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9_]*)(?<spec‌ifier>[%&@!#$])?(?<as>\sAs\s(?<reference>(((?<library>[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9_]*))\.)?‌(?<identifier>[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9_]*)))?\s\=\s(?<value>.*)$
^^ got a named capture group for every "part"
oh wait, Java doesn't support named capture groups?

2:40 PM
@Mat'sMug I haven't even finished a cup of coffee yet!

It supports numbered capture groups, but the numbers refer to the group in the pattern, not the output.
In order to use them, you have to have a loop somewhere, and I just don't understand how you get a 'list' like structure out of the result.
C# magic?

sort of
Match has a Groups collection, and each group has a Captures collection
so I can iterate captures in the "value" group to get the values for each match
i.e. in Const foo = 123, bar = 456 I can get 123 from Match.Groups["value"].Captures[0] and 456 from Match.Groups["value"].Captures[1]

I think you should be using String.Split and collections inside of collections.
or end the statements on ; and ,

Split was about what I was going to suggest, but the comments make it hard.
(and quotes).

^^ that

2:46 PM
oh gosh you are parser VB code.

irony:
2
A: Regex to capture VBA comments

retailcoderThe pattern in @Jeff Wurz's comment (^\'[^\r\n]+$|''[^\r\n]+$) doesn't even match any of your test samples, and the linked question is useless, the regex in there will only match that specific comment in the OP's question, not "the VBA comment syntax". The regex you have come up with works even ...

single quotes are almost never used in VBA for anything other than comments, right?

and in string literals.. which are legal Const values :(

Except for things inside of .... ^^^^

and yes, all this trouble for the < 1% of cases

2:48 PM
those are the cases that cause the big issues though

@Malachi Getting Chrome is normally the first thing I do when I reformat. But here at work it's not an option, it's IE or nothing. But IE 10 will be much better than 8 lol.

@Mat's, if you do a three-stager: 1. cut off the comments, 2. pull the declaration off the front (Public Const ), then you are left with a repeating pattern that's matchable.
Essentially, a comma-separated set with possible quoted commas.

^^ smart

@Phrancis agreed, I know you can't get Chrome, think you have mentioned it before I was just messing with you and begging for stars

lol

2:50 PM
^^ begging for stars

(gotta work)
bbl
@Malachi yup. so far I have only implemented the declarations syntax though, and Const is a problem for some edge cases.. although the declaration-followed-by-comment case isn't too uncommon.

@Mat'sMug I was thinking that you could grab everything between commas and semi-colons. then I remembered that you were parsing VBA not C#

@Phrancis You know you can get bootstrap from a CDN (you don't need it in your repo)

What's a CDN lol

@Malachi I still need to solve the line continuation problem - right now my code parses an "instruction", the calling code will need to un-linecontinuate the multiline instructions before they can be parsed.

@Phrancis I could sure help you! Not a CSS pro at all ! But there is some basic I can help with for sure !

@Malachi I want to implement an "extract method" refactoring (and other fun stuff) - to do that I need to know what identifiers are being referenced in the selected code. "rename" refactoring will be possible, too.
@rolfl so... I'm screwed then? — retailcoder 1 min ago

^^ couldn't resist

@Mat'sMug umm... so you want to parse up to the comment, right??
then your capturing group shouldn't be .*
but something like [^']* ...

It is not a good day when you end up on the 7th page of google results and have not found a solution......

@Vogel612 I know, that's part of the problem. But then wouldn't [^'] fail to match Const foo As String = "good ol' VBA"

I know @ducky! REBOOT IT...... sure..... that'll work @ducky.....

eurk...

yeah, sorry :)

3:33 PM
yes it definitely would...
but that would be a special case for strings only...
arghhh you can't change the expression for As String declarations when types are optional..
darn VBA..

what I have now works for 99% of Const declarations :)
how does VBA even compile, dammit!

couldn't you parse the value for a comment before "returning" it??

all options are open

@Mat'sMug - in visual-studio.... how do I see the output of Console.WriteLine ... ?

you... run the console app?

3:35 PM
@rolfl usually... you don't...
if there's no console app there's no console and you > /dev/null/ in a sense..
that said, brb installing win 8.1 over my current 8.0. T.T
damn MS wouldn't stop bugging the hell outta me..

That's because 8.0 sucks hard and 8.1 is decent, according to public opinion
so updating you as quickly as possible to prevent you from thinking MS is bad is good for their public opinion
oooor at least that's my idea behind it?

I have no clue...
but personally I think everyone that doesn't like 8.0 because ... is a whiner
34%...

@Vogel612 isn't it... colorful :)

3:50 PM
@Vogel612 Do you mean 34% doesn't like it or is it the percentage of your work you can do using 8.0 ?

no it's the current status of the installation after restart..
currently I am on my laptop...
which is nicely positioned on the right side of my table....
in the center there's the larger screen as well as keyboard and mouse and on the left hand side there's a smaller screen.. The screens are connected to my tower...

@Vogel612 I read this as "MS wouldn't stop debugging the hell outta me.."

@Malachi wouldn't that be nice?? then I probably had a few different bugs now...
I am disappointed they didn't fix my slow mornings though...

@Mat'sMug how do you compile a language without Semi-Colons? is it even possible?
I bet they have to convert it to something like C++ to get it to compile...

@Malachi you pretend end-of-line is a semi-colon and walk away happy ;)

3:58 PM
@Mat'sMug well given there's no & _ that is..

and that there's only 1 instruction on that line
2
Const foo As String = "123": Dim bar As String = "456"

@Mat'sMug and that's where the exceptions start rolling in...

well you just need to tokenize properly...
