first get the modifiers strings and identifiers in order and then check whether there's a colon...

or just switch to C#

for now I'm writing code to parse instructions - I'll deal with "code lines" later

you know I am just Trolling you silly VB programmers right?

I want to see the accountant writing C#....

@Malachi it is C#

4:00 PM
who's a silly vb programmer??

@Mat'sMug lol

either you are a hellishly good vb programmer (like mat, ducky and the elite) or you aren't a programmer at all (like the accountant in our company that made the time-tracking excelsheet)

@Mat'sMug you better be careful before Microsoft sees you implementing things they like, they might try to recruit you

Wouldn't that be a win??

and bring back VB before it completely dies

4:05 PM

@Mat'sMug beware I am following you

you have been starred

yay!

I'm hungry but I have to sit here for two more hours
dang

poor you..

4:13 PM
I'm torturing myself with pics of soup
I'll go get some ramen once I finish work

hmmmm ramen...
wow that's the second restart it does now...
shame on that installation...

we all have out niches don't we. hopefully I can get rid of that designation though....
hey SE runs on the ASP.NET framework, does anyone know if chat is opensource somewhere?

@Malachi sounds like a question for Meta SE

I think I'll write some public static string GetTrailingComment(this string codeLine) extension method to address a part of my problem.

Q: Access to Chat Code?

JustinOk, I'm not saying... "Let me have you chat code." I'm asking if its an open source project. I love the design of chat and well the entire interface in general. I'd love to incorporate a like client into my own project, but I'd have to do some adapt work and add some features that this site reall...

Then the trailing comment can be easily extracted before the regex does its magic

@Malachi It would be nice to have a proper chat API though...
hacking around playing user is honestly a total PITA..

4:42 PM
@Vogel612 I need to find a tutorial for creating a chat room in ASP.NET using the Membership provider that I created already
or something

well I can tell you that much... They are using something rest-like here..

looking at the URL's I'd say SE is ASP.NET MVC

@Mat'sMug newest version AFAIK
@Mat'sMug @Malachi this blog post by a dev suggests they are using asp.net mvc 4.1

they are ordering a C# book for me and an MVC book for me as well here at work.

Q: PDO incrementing values with prepared statements

speedyI'm trying to increment duplicate values from csv while inserting in database. The problem is that the incrementation stops at 1 and all duplicated values are like: val, val_1, val_1, val_1. 5:05 PM
I have used that extensively, and it is sooo intuitive to just call server methods by name from JS and JS methods, by name from server code. Couple it with an MVVM framework like KnockoutJS that automatically binds to the DOM and reads the JSON built by SignalR, and you will feel like you have been injected with awesome.

Star-Happy Fridays wow!

@xDaevax whole lot of acronyms that I need to learn more about...lol

MVVM ~> Model-View-ViewModel
DOM ~> Document Object Model (right?)
JS ~> JavaScript
JSON ~> no idea, but think of it as a serialization format - like XML but less of a PITA to parse.

5:22 PM
JSON == JavaScript Object Notation

ah, thanks!

The Ten Days' Campaign (Dutch: Tiendaagse Veldtocht, French: Campagne des Dix-Jours) was a failed attempt to suppress the Belgian revolution by the Dutch king William I between 2 and 12 August 1831. The Dutch army invaded Belgium on 2 August, and over the course of the next few days defeated Belgian forces several times in battle and advanced deep into Belgian territory. However, on 8 August, the Belgian government appealed to France for support. Faced with an advancing French army, under Étienne Gérard, the Dutch withdrew. == Background == When the Belgian Revolution began in August 1830, the...

I'm hesitating to post real code, since it's proprietary code that belongs to one of my clients. I could put some make-up on my code snippet, but it wouldn't be my real code...
I was thinking that someone might have a solution to the more general problem of naming factories without needing real code. I trimmed most of the code out in order to bring sample code to its most general form.
Also, I'm curious on why my question gets rejected when a question with Vegetables is accepted: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/8467/…. We can all agree that this is probably not real code either...

Even with make-up, I fear that you can't realy change it. Otherwise you would be asking another question.

So what would you do if you were him?

@Simon-Pierre if it's proprietary code, couldn't you get one of your colleagues or a senior developer to do a code review?

I will finally be getting IE 10! :D
@Phrancis Ummm..... congrats?
Or are condolences more appropriate?

8:23 PM

The fine distinction is that the Vegetables tries to solve a problem (there is a design pattern question), whereas WithLongName is just asking for opinions about naming.

@Phrancis My team has no answer to my particular question, unfortunately :( And it's not the first team some members of my team encounter this naming problem. That's why I thought this might have been a general naming problem that could have been illustrated by a simple, fictive example.

@200

@skiwi Our best shooter!

8:26 PM
You could ask again with realistic details, but fictitious names, like how news reporters sometimes make up names but keep the details of the story intact.

@200_success So you're saying that my naming problem is not a real problem? I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I'm just trying to grasp what a real problem is, as seen by the Code Review community. I'm certainly not the first dev in my close circle who has come across this problem, so I thought that my problem might have been valid.

I'm saying that we have difficulty advising you when you withhold information about what you are trying to achieve.

@Morwenn ouch

@200_success The goal of using factories was to enforce SRP and facilitate unit testing

you know what happens when a prick hits a wall?

lol ^
3

@200_success Indeed we introduced collaborators for testings. Because in the real use case the factory does a little more than that (It actually sorts the widgets in the required order); it would just make it easier to mock things out.

int* findLargest(int *a, int *b, int *c)
{
	int val = std::max(*a, std::max(*b, *c));
	return &val;
}

int main()
{
	int a = 5;
	int b = 7;
	int c = 91;
	int *largest = findLargest(&a, &b, &c);

	std::cout << *largest << std::endl;
}
This should result in undefined behavior, correct?

@syb0rg findlargest() { return yourMom;) --> Ahaha mom joke I'm really tired!
4

Since we return the address of the local variable val which is destroyed when we exit the functions?

@Pacane That kind of information would be useful to include in the code. We are, after all, here to review code.

Sure, I'll add it in the post.

9:11 PM
@syb0rg Yes, it should.

Because it has returned 91 for me every time, which I didn't completely expect to happen

@Marc-Andre Joke's on you. Your code won't compile without a semicolon.
8

Hello @nhgrif

@200_success My mom was hiding it :P

@syb0rg You function may have been inlined, in which case var would be on the stack and you still got its adddress.

9:14 PM
Hmmm, that makes sense
This is the safer way to do it then?
int* findLargest(int *a, int *b, int *c)
{
	int *val = new int(std::max(*a, std::max(*b, *c)));
	return val;
}

int main()
{
	int a = 5;
	int b = 7;
	int c = 91;
	int *largest = findLargest(&a, &b, &c);

	std::cout << *largest << std::endl;
}

The safer way is to take values by reference and return a reference.

@syb0rg Just a question though, why do you use pointers here?

@Pacane Required for my class

ok

Useless in practice, I know
@Morwenn Hrmph

9:19 PM
std::max returns a reference, so return &(std::max(*a, std::max(*b, *c))); should be fine.

Ohhh
But then I have to make the stuffs constant
But that's cool
Should have been to start out with

TTQW ! Have a nice week end @all!

Also: return std::max({a, b, c}, [](int* x, int* y) { return *x < *y ? x : y; });
Taking advantage of std::initializer_list and function objects.

Whoa, way over my head now haha
@Marc-Andre You too!

Q: Could I make my personal minecraft android app code more efficient?

andyADDThis wont be released publicly, but that doesn't mean I want to have bad coding habits. I am not too far into this before realizing I could make it better.. One of my main concerns is finding alternative to the if statement halfway down. The toast message is temporary I was having trouble with so...

9:23 PM
std::max can take a list of values: std::max({1, 5, 8, 7, 9, 2}) == 9
But it also has an optional parameter: a comparison function object.
Basically, you tell to std::max "you compare two values this way, now give me the greater value of this list taking into account the comparison function I gave you".
It's very scalable.

Ohhhhh
It doesn't compile for some reason :(
int main()
{
	std::cout << std::max({1, 3, 79}, [](int* x, int* y) { return *x < *y ? x : y; }) << std::endl;
}
No matching function for call to object of type 'lambda'
And I'm too clueless to debug it... haha

You give it integers and try to compare pointers :p

Logical
:P

@Simon-Pierre @Pacane I'm still not entirely happy with the question, but I do appreciate your effort to try to make it good, and it does look a bit better than before. I've decided to reopen it anyway — we'll see what code reviewers have to say.

@200_success what makes you sceptical about it?

A lack of concrete detail.

@syb0rg Ok, I don't understand the error either. Thought I was right though :/
No actually, I just wrote exactly what I told you was wrong xD
But if your teachers know as much of C++ as mine did, they simply won't understand will call it a "hacky" solution while I would say it is an "elegant solution" :/
As elegant a solution can be to solve a problem with dumb restrictions.

@200_success about the actual view code? (or displaying presenter mechanism I should say?)

9:45 PM
Sure. Revealing it is unlikely to be a source of competitive advantage to any other company. (But only you can decide whether posting it is advisable under your company's policies.) I'm suggesting that it would make a better question if you included it, since factory-for-a-factory seems like a code smell.

Ok
Well it's not really related to the problem, and we're using GWTP and it's open source
I just thought including these details would add noise to the actual question

If we didn't like looking at code, we wouldn't be on Code Review.
Anyway, now that an answer has been posted, please don't change this question.

I'm only here for the graduation T-shirt.

Q: Function to extract bytes as a decimal

EdeniaYou give this function a pointer and how many bytes you want to extract as a decimal and it returns it. long long byte_extract (void * source, size_t bytes) { long long num = 0, m = 1; size_t i; for(i = 0; i != bytes; i++) { num += (((unsigned char*)source)[i]*m); m

what is size_t ?

Sometimes unsigned long.
using size_t = decltype(sizefo(int));

why is it called that way?

10:21 PM
It is the type used to store the result of sizeof.
But it's implementation-defined. It is also used to represent the size of many things in the C++ standard.

doesn't seem a natural choice for "number of bytes to extract"

At least you know that you have to pass an unsigned integer.
Well yeah, it's implementation-defined, but it is required to be a typedef for a built-in unsigned integer type.

so hey, where did you read about the first-two-pages for t-shirt policy?

It's what happened for The Workplace if I recall correctly.

You have any idea how many compiler errors that would produce? lol

@Morwenn Clicking the links/videos you post here is what it must be like getting Bertie Bott's

@rolfl Actually, I shared the description because I couldn't even picture what it meant.

wait, is cr graduating or sth?

But you're kind of right: I do listen to pretty different things from time to time.

@janos I wasn't able to complete it, but that would've taken more time anyway. A majority of the class was having trouble with this one (it's individual work). I think I still got most of it done, and it does compile.

@AlexM. We hav e been told that yes, we're graduating, but we have to wait in line for a few things to get organized.

10:59 PM
thanks @Morwenn for the grammar fixes :)

@Morwenn My wife says it's more than a little irritating

@janos No problem :)

@Jamal so, do you like Java yet?

@rolfl What is irritating? Listening to genres you're not used to?

what genre would this be?

11:01 PM
@janos It's okay, but kinda annoying at times. I've never had to deal with different ends (front and back) and having them interact. That's the biggest part I haven't finished, though.

@rolfl cool

@Morwenn Well, no, the sound of this particular 'piece' is just drony.

I wonder how the site's design will look

@janos Ambient.

workplace.se had a graduation that I've seen live
the new design kicks ass

11:02 PM
Well, it could also be "drone", that's right.

nhgrifIn playing around with this, I noticed three things I didn't particularly like: This picture represents the first problem. Setting the background color fills in the entire rectangle, but should probably only fill in the circle. We can fix this as such: Add a private variable to hold the v...

@rolfl Keep in mind that there are still pieces that I feel too strange :)

Note that code Review is about 10th in line, and they graduate about 1 site every 2 months at the moment
There are some assurances that they will increase that rate

Q: Struggling to create an instance (view) given its dependency (view model)

devuxerBasically, I have a set of views and view models in my project. There is a one-to-one mapping of views and view models, so each view requires a particular view model. I'd like to instantiate a series of views given a collection of view models. Here's what I've come up with: public class Overlay...

^ That one is instrumental, calm, kind of sad but somewhat uplifting.
I like to close my eyes and simply listen to it, not trying to think to anything else.

it's indeed quite pleasant
I like mostly the beginning, with just the guitar
