Q: Using the builder pattern to build mock objects and nested builders

Craig BrettNo, this question has no roosting construction workers. I'm not sure if what I'm doing is a good use of the builder pattern or whether its a bastardization of what its intended purpose was. I'm trying to set up mocks in my tests and find myself repeating myself often to set up the mocks, so I've...

what I was about to say

@Malachi I -1'd because OP's classes represent records in a database indeed - and those are represented in code with POCO's, which are best defined as classes. Defining them as structs would hinder future upgrading to EF. And it's almost an exact duplicate of another question OP asked the same day, only with a different type - the issues are the same, the solutions are the same.

@Mat'sMug so if I took out the Struct part it would be a good answer?
consider it Stricken from the record

unfortunately the system won't consider it stricken until you actually edit your post - my vote is locked until then ;)

I thought they were only going to use that logo while it was in private beta, but now that Puzzling is in Public beta I start to wonder
@Mat'sMug lol, thanks Santa.
@Mat'sMug In my new Cardgame code, once again it's possible to play a card from the opponent's hand, and even from your opponent's deck... (yes, it's not the first time I forget about this)

Probably I should give more explanation, but does anyone see how this can be simplified?
static <T extends Enum<T> & IntValuedEnum<T>> T getEnumValueFromPointer(final Pointer<IntValuedEnum<T>> pointer, Class<T> enumClass) {
    IntValuedEnum<T> pointerValue = pointer.get();
    T[] enumConstants = enumClass.getEnumConstants();
    return enumConstants[(int)pointerValue.value()];
}

@SimonAndréForsberg Would you get upset if I said it was puzzling? :-)

For people interested, it is using classes from the BridJ library
I'd want to get rid of the enumClass, but not sure if that's possible

@JerryCoffin Why would I get upset because you're trying to be funny?

@SimonAndréForsberg well that's flexible!

3:52 PM
@Mat'sMug Not the kind of flexibility I was looking for though...

@SimonAndréForsberg Some people dislike that sort of humor (or lack of it).

From this last post:
*"It seems to work at least, although I cannot see the file"*
Contradictory much?
Though I don't know much about Java perhaps I'm just confused lol.

4:22 PM
@Phrancis I'm also a bit confused by that, although I suppose he means that he cannot see the file on his device as there's no in-built way to access the file system. He needs an app for that, such as Total Commander for Android

That would make sense in that context

Or perhaps the file is stored in the internal storage and not the external, in which case he needs to root-break the device in order to access that directory.

@Malachi answer posted. now I'm hungry.

int ៛៛៛ = ៛*௹+៛៛/௹௹;

Having fun, are you @skiwi?

@SimonAndréForsberg That's just wacky. And Scala certainly doesn't help in that regard.

@SimonAndréForsberg Yeah... Gonna use only this kinds of variables from now on!

@Donald.McLean Perhaps Scala makes things even more wackier?
@skiwi Expect to hear some comments on that when you ask a CR question with such variable names ;)
2

4:46 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Yes it does because method names can contain operator characters (or be nothing but operator characters).

@Mat'sMug I added to my answer and deleted that comment

@Donald.McLean So all operator characters are also "connecting characters" in Scala? That expands the wackiness a bit, yes.

@SimonAndréForsberg No. I'm pretty sure that it only applies to method names.

Can you only overload existing operators in C++, or also define your own?

4:49 PM
I believe you can define your own.
But I should not be trusted as I'm not good in C++...

There's actually a reason behind it. And API designers are encouraged to define alternate methods that have regular names, in case someone wants to use the library from java.
@skiwi A Google search found a page implying that you can create user defined operators BUT they are just syntactic sugar for function calls.

@Donald.McLean As long as it allows to introduce funny characters, it seems legit!

Quick question: If I were to get a SQL related cert you think I'd be better off starting with MS Transact-SQL or MySQL? I know MySQL is more accessible for me (I'm on a Mac) but in my type of industry (Finance/Insurance/etc.) I'm not sure which is most common.

@Phrancis I think I would recommend MS Transact-SQL. I think that is considered more "professional".
99% of MySQL users are PHP programmers who don't know what they're doing.

Here we use SQL Server almost exclusively.

4:58 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I'd heard that of a few other programmers say that too

Btw, is SQL Server and MS Transact-SQL the same thing?

Yeah
As far as I know anyways.

MySQL's optimizer blows
postgre ftw :)

@SimonAndréForsberg SQL Server is the DBMS, and Transact-SQL is the dialect of SQL that SQL Server uses.
To the best of my knowledge.

Makes sense, @Donald.McLean.

5:00 PM
@Donald.McLean T-SQL is used on other DBMS's as well, but that is correct

@dagg PostgreSQL I find syntax to be weird, plus don't know any place that uses it

Transact-SQL (T-SQL) is Microsoft's and Sybase's proprietary extension to SQL. SQL, the acronym for Structured Query Language, is a standardized computer language that was originally developed by IBM for querying, altering and defining relational databases, using declarative statements. T-SQL expands on the SQL standard to include procedural programming, local variables, various support functions for string processing, date processing, mathematics, etc. and changes to the DELETE and UPDATE statements. These additional features make Transact-SQL Turing complete. Transact-SQL is central t...
used on Sybase as well, what ever that is
TFL

@Malachi Sybase used to be a big DBMS company, but they have suffered major losses over the years.
Bought by SAP.

@Phrancis why is it weird? postgre is fairly standards conformant. idk why people don't use it, it runs circles around mysql

We were using Oracle and switched to SQL Server about 4 years ago. No idea why.

5:04 PM
I have some experience with PostgreSQL and it's not that bad actually. I wouldn't mind using it again.

@DaggNabbit Perhaps that's the case, I use MySQL for learning because it's easily accessible on Mac (unlike SQL Server) and free.

PostgreSQL is also free AFAIK

I might just have to install SQL Server Express on my wife's Windows machine
@SimonAndréForsberg What is AFAIK???

as far as I know, AFAIK

@Phrancis AFAIK it means "As Far As I Know".

5:07 PM
@Phrancis Serious question?

@rolfl I guess?

In finance/insurance industry you will find almost no MySQL.

There is some SQLServer.
But, the bulk of data in finance will be on a larger platform that can be clustered and has good RAS features.

I think at work where I work they're using MariaDB even over MySQL

5:09 PM
Oracle, DB2, Sybase.

RAS?

Reliability, Availablilty, Servicability

mysql's optimizer is really bad

Gotcha

Perhaps I should finally finish playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution while I still have the time...

5:10 PM
@Jamal You are not alone!

you have to write things in ways you wouldn't normally write them to get them to run at a reasonable speed

@Jamal No, you should learn Java!

I think I bought it at last year's Steam Summersale...

I'll give you 5 up-votes if you write JAVA in your first CR question about Java!
3

@SimonAndréForsberg I may start that in July. Keep it more fresh in my mind before classes start.

5:12 PM
July!? It's a long time before July!

@Phrancis In my experience, and I have worked for many, many years in finance.... the bulk of the data will be stored on either mainframe (DB2), or Unix (DB2/Oracle).
Finance folk do not trust MSoft for their OS.

My nephew, 14 years old, asked me if recently if I could help him learn Java. I'm a proud uncle.

@SimonAndréForsberg Scala. All the advantages of Java and fewer of the disadvantages.

And, you said... ?

@rolfl Gladly!

5:13 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I'll think about it. :-) At least it'll give someone a chance to edit something.

@Donald.McLean And four times the learning curve. (And I know @Jamal will have to learn Java sooner or later anyway...)

"Imagine a bunch of rocks sitting around on a flat desert playa. The sunlight striking them provides enough power to move them around. But it doesn't happen. Despite how cool it would be if rocks ran around on their own, all that energy would rather just goof off. That's the second law in a nutshell. It's why most of the universe is boring."

@SimonAndréForsberg Only if you're going to use the entire language, which almost nobody does.

@Phrancis - you should be aware that both Oracle and DB2 offer express versions of their databases that work on either Linux or Windows, and hvae the bulk of the features enabled
No cost

@Donald.McLean I found it very hard learning Scala the first hours I tried, but I really should give it another chance. Do you know of any good Scala tutorials?

5:15 PM
I like embedded Derby.

And, the disabled features are the sorts of things that that SQLSever/Mysql does not have anyway

@skiwi What are you reading?

But, remember, that any DB system you use, is all about attention-to-detail more than sexy.

@SimonAndréForsberg If you already know Java then you might like Scala For The Impatient.

@SimonAndréForsberg My advice for Java programmers who want to learn Scala is to just start writing Java-like code in Scala. Over time, you'll pick up bits and pieces of understanding and your code will evolve into better and better code.

@rolfl I have not heard much about DB2, I've heard Oracle tossed around here and there. DB2 best bet you think?

@DaggNabbit You can use the Data Explorer for that. But the most used tags are already displayed on the home page.

SEDE is made for this

@Donald.McLean I guess the first step for me would be to make sure that I can use it in Android and/or GWT, because if I can't then I'm more or less screwed.
