I so don't like Spring
Stuff is connected through annotations but it's so hard to tell what ones are what

@Corbin Almost every time I try to program in weakly typed languages, I end up crashing and burning.

@Donald.McLean I need the structure and discipline to avoid the surprises later.
I hate having to think-like-the-interpreter in order to simply read the code.

12:44 AM
@Donald.McLean really? I've never had problems with it, it just feels dirty. I suppose I do find myself having to refactor weakly typed languages far more often though :/

And assembly, which I am completely hopeless in.

Speaking of typing... I was thinking about developing a library of Objective-C collection objects that allow you to specify what type of object you're putting in it and prevent you from putting other kinds of objects in the collection.

It's even better when it's enforced at compile time. :-)

@nhgrif generics?

Hmm?

12:54 AM
@nhgrif Does Objective-C not have generics?

I'm not really familiar with generics. I know it's a term from C++ and Java, but I'm not sure what it'd be in ObjC.
Objective-C has NSArray which holds pointers to objects.

@nhgrif It's exactly as you describe; Dictionary<string, int> can only have string keys and integer values

Which means it holds a pointer to any type of object... which means you can make no guarantee about what kind of object is in the array.

Oh, it's a dynamic language apparently
Is there a reason why you would do <script src="${jquery_url}" type="text/javascript"><jsp:text/></script> instead of <script src="${jquery_url}" type="text/javascript"></script>?
(aka: omitting <jsp:text/>)

dynamic binding, not dynamically typed though

Q: Get distinct combinations of numbers

SEDThe below code returns all distinct combinations based on the logic that 1,2,3 = 3,2,1 = 2,3,1, so it only returns 1 instance of that set of numbers. public void GetPowersets() { List<int> ints = new List<int>() { 1,2,2,3,3 }; var results = GetPowerSet(ints); List<...

if I read this right, the quoted block is the desired output. OP's code doesn't produce that.

@Mat'sMug we chatted about that earlier today and kind of had the same impression... Seems like this should be on SO not CR...

yeah... I think I originally misread the post, it's not very obvious what's being asked for here

Hi, just checking in, code is right, and it should not produce the same results as the quoted-block
Let me rephrase that...
The code shoud not return the same content as the quoted block.
The quoted block is unique combinations.
He wants to change it so that the unique no longer applies.

code returns 15 values (lists of values actually) whether the input is new[] {1,2,3} or new[]{1,2,2,3,3} - so that's correct?

no....

Someone needs to point out that counting in binary and and combinations, are best friends

I'm hitting a wall with this code, I've never written something like this (permutations), my head is about to explode... I think recursion is the correct way to do this, but I just can't seem to get it. Trying to implement it with yield return.... not working :(

No... you're doing it wrong, but I am no good with C#
There's a trick.
It's the fastest way to do it, and it will work with yield nicely
Let me explain .... you listeneing?
@Mat'sMug ... ?

sorry.. yeah
(wife just arrived)

Combinations:
- you have a set of numbers.
put them in an array

4:15 AM
new[]{1,2,3}
gotcha

each number is either in the combination, or it is not.
Each number has a 'state', on, or off.
Now, that reminf you of something?

hmm allright

Yes, bits.
Consider your numbers {1,2,3}.
Now consider binary counting with 3 bits:
000
001
010
011
100
...
To get combinations, you create an integer that logically has as many bis as data memebers....
int limit = 1 << size

so... this isn't about recursion at all?

for (int i = 0; i < limit; i++) {
    for (int bit = 0; bit < size; bit++) {
        if (i & (1 << bit) = 1) {
            .... then array[bit] is in the combination

4:18 AM
right
and if it is in the combination, you yield return it

Not quite.
You need to do that inside the i loop, not inside the bit loop.
So, before the bit loop you create a list to store your combination.
then add the data to the list inside the bit loop.

right, because you're yielding an IEnumerable<int> to return an IEnumerable<IEnumerable<int>>

then yield the list outside the bit loop
Now, the i loop does not need to be a loop, it can be an int that you use to yield the combination, then you increment it for the next()
in other words, your only state you need is the current i, and the limit.

aren't you assuming the values are contiguous here?

I'm going to say my mind is blown and leave it at that.

4:21 AM
Array indexes are always contiguous.

duh

The only time you run in to problems is when you have more members in the set than you have bits in your integer.

that seems much, much, much more simpler than OP's O(n^n) solution (making this up, ...but there's definitely an exponential in the complexity there)

But, you can safely use a signed 64bit long, and the user will never know even if they have more than 64 set memebers
Because, the yield process is not instantaneous, and, they will have to do it .... oh, about 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 times.
and, they will probably die before that matters.

I'm so bookmarking this conversation and eventually implementing it.
bit-shifting stuff always gets me nervous

Combinations are a real problem.... consider a set with just one member.... 'X' how many combinations?
_
X
Now, add another member... Y how many combinations?
_ _
_ X
Y _
Y X

but... you don't want to return a "combination" where all "bits" are off, do you?
you should have X, Y, XY and YX... no? (and _ and _ _)
...and _ X and ..yeah that

Combinations are different to permutations.

4:31 AM
but OP is ignoring the _'s

Combinations can contain the empty result
No, he's not.

so the 1 output is actually 1, _, _?

The quoted block contains just 1, and just 2, and just 3
It is common to not include the empty set result.... but, then you just start your int counter at 1 ... ;-)

hold on here..

Yhanks, I would like to say I am brilliant, but, no, I have just been around the block ... ;-)
almost 20 years at this now.
and, I 'grew up' at a time where you had to conserve each cycle
@Mat'sMug - for the record, the complexities for the algorithm I have shown you is size-complexity O(1), and time complexity O(n2^n)
where n is the number of members in the set
That ime-complexity can be rephrased as O( 2^(n+1) )
which is huge, but is still as good as it gets.

5:13 AM

Everything is slower on SO

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. query seems hopeless on SO

Yeah, the query plan would be a challenge. Using the database for analytics like this is.... well, heavy
An analytics database would normally be structured to support the queries that are run, there would be no way to do that for this.
(this being let anyone write their own queries)

Yeah... even though
Wouldn't it be possible?
To let users create their own database (using data from the existing one), that gets updated weekly at the same time the main SEDE database gets updated

Close voters: Out of Heap Space is an indication of a memory leak, something that's usually on-topic on Code Review. — Simon André Forsberg 4 mins ago
IMO that question is not off-topic just because it's asking about Out of Heap Space.
@JeroenVannevel Although summer is better, I like Spring.

Hmmm .... really? Still thinking about it.
You had to ask a question to get clarification that was exactly like an SO request for more information

Do you think it is possible to have some sort of automated test case generation?
Take this condition as an example:
if (handCardIndex >= hand.getCapacity()) {
    return false;
}
If such a tool could look through the sourcecode, then it could construct a Player with a Hand in which that conditions does not hold
The idea would be that an user can click on the if-statement in an IDE and have an option to generate a test case for it using the above scheme
Any thoughts on that? Worthy an idea?
It's the opposite of TDD though

@rolfl Where did that number come from?
@rolfl That doesn't make the original question off-topic though
@skiwi Then you would have to test the code that produced the test cases...

10:57 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg Ofcourse. Such projects need quite extensive testing

@skiwi Such an idea could possibly generate code to increase the code coverage, but can it produce actual assertions? I doubt that.

Well, suppose we live in an ideal world...
Let's say you want to check: if (!(hand.get(handCardIndex) instanceof MonsterCard)) {
Then it would need to figure out how to get a non-MonsterCard in your hand
It can examine the hand class and learn that it consists out of a List<Card>
and can find a set or add-method to add things to the list
It's not just about code coverage though
Regardless of coverage, in a method that is checking several constraints, they need to be checked

@skiwi But what assertEquals calls would such code be able to generate?

That's a good one
It doesn't need to do so if used for creating tests that are validating failure

11:04 AM
The boolean isActionAllowed(final Player player) returns false, so the only assert it would need to do is assert that the outcome is false aswell
as the selected if-branch returns false
Creating tests that check for validity requirs human minds I suppose, those are usually a load trickier

So what you would end up doing is generating "self-fulfilling prophecies". You use the code to generate the assertions. What guarantees that the return values you have written in the code are correct?
@CaptainObvious using namespace std;

@SimonAndréForsberg Especially that "Why?", as well as missing explanation make it off-topic. Also I consider a thrown exception from anything but my own code as broken FWIW:..

@SimonAndréForsberg That is something you can't check indeed
But consider this small method:
@Override
public boolean isActionAllowed(final Player player) {
    Objects.requireNonNull(player, "player");
    Hand hand = player.getHand();
    Field field = player.getField();
    if (handCardIndex >= hand.getCapacity()) {
        return false;
    }
    if (fieldMonsterIndex >= field.getMonsterCapacity()) {
        return false;
    }
    if (field.hasMonster(fieldMonsterIndex)) {
        return false;
    }
    if (!(hand.get(handCardIndex) instanceof MonsterCard)) {
        return false;
It needs to be asserted that all invalid conditions return false, correct?
Even though now they seem trivial, future code changes could accidentally break it

@Vogel612 Then it should be closed for "unclear what you're asking", not "broken code". IMO the code is not broken, it has a memory leak. We have helped with that many times before on this site, just like we have helped with performance aspects ("code is too slow"). The Exception Error is thrown by the JVM for running out of memory, not by "the code itself".

@skiwi that looks like a job for a single return statement...

11:15 AM
@skiwi Assuming that the code you have written there is correct, yes. But can a machine determine if the code you have written is correct?

@SimonAndréForsberg the code makes the JVM crash reliably, and thus is not even completing....

When that happens, it'll just wrap around to Long.MIN_VALUE, or -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 as others hav...

I'd say it's broken then...

@Vogel612 For once I actually agree with @skiwi. I think there should be more than one return statement. It makes it so much easier to step-through when debugging.

Q: check the hardrive performance of the particular process using perl script

VenkatesanI have written the following perl script to monitor the hardrive performance of the particular process(say for example chrome) use strict; use warnings; use Spreadsheet::WriteExcel; #@usage example perl script.pl 5 5 if($#ARGV!=1); my $login = (getpwuid $>); die "must ...

@Vogel612 Reliably yes, but I'm not sure how many executions of it is completed or not. Is the code executed completely 10 times before crashing, or 10000 times, or does it not complete one execution at all? That's why I asked for additional information.

 @Override
 public boolean isActionAllowed(final Player player) {
     Objects.requireNonNull(player, "player");
     Hand hand = player.getHand();
     Field field = player.getField();
     return !((handCardIndex >= hand.getCapacity()) || (fieldMonsterIndex >= field.getMonsterCapacity()) || field.hasMonster(fieldMonsterIndex) || !(hand.get(handCardIndex) instanceof MonsterCard))
 }

@Vogel612 Now imagine that there is something wrong with your program, suddenly an action seems to not be allowed. You need to find out why it wasn't allowed... I find that version harder to debug than @skiwi's version.
(Just my opinion though)

@SimonAndréForsberg why that?? there's watches for stuff like that..
and the formatting here in chat is broken too... I'd put every condition on a separate line..

That makes one very long line... which I'm also not a big fan of.

11:24 AM
and AFAIR the debugger still nicely walks every single condition if you "step into", at least with eclipse..
there you go ;)

Yes, it does walk every single condition, but with @skiwi's version I could step over until I notice that one of the if-blocks has been entered and a return false is about to be performed.

you got a point there...

Another alternative: (Not saying this is the best one, although sometimes I would actually prefer this)
boolean handCardIndexOK = ...;
boolean monsterIndexOK = ...;
boolean ...;
return handCardIndexOK && monsterIndexOK && ...;

25 messages after lunch... okay reading
@Vogel612 That would clutter more in my opinion. At times it's better to seperate the if's, all branches need to be tested either way

@skiwi And a few pings I guess :)

11:29 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg Well, you are still manually asking for autoamtic generation when cicking on a branch, so there you would check whether it's correct
@SimonAndréForsberg And one more ;)
I have considered the single-return-statement option, but I've found no way to make it look nice

@skiwi True, but then you could be fooled by the generated assertion. I'd prefer not having a machine make my assertions for me. Machines are not mind readers - yet.
@skiwi The only way I think would be what I wrote above, using temporary boolean variables.
(if that's "nice" or not is up to you)

@rolfl This lead me to the question of how long would it take to overflow considering you have a computer that automatically upgrades itself to the newest parts available every x time
Atleast the formatting looks nice then
But multiple returns aren't bad afaik?
This made me chuckle
> /* wait for the VM to warm up */ Thread.sleep(1000);
3

Oh, that's ^^^^ priceless....
Where's that?

/* wait for the VM to warm up */ Thread.sleep(1000); - that's not how it works. The JVM does not warmup if it does nothing... Your micro benchmark has several flaws. In particular: (i) you don't really allow the JVM to warmup (ii) the two paths you want to test are in the same method, which might prevent some optimisations. — assylias Feb 12 '13 at 11:58

11:35 AM
@rolfl ^

@skiwi Nope, I have nothing against multiple returns

Unsure about whether my small idea up there has any practical uses... It would be very interesting to make
Because I think it is possible :p

I can imagine gym class at a school somewhere, the teacher says: "OK, kids, let's warm up!" and they all lay down and sleep.

Or not? ^

Nope :)
@skiwi I think you could ask a question on Programmers about your idea. You tend to be good at asking questions.

11:50 AM
Then how did I do it with the 3-starred with for VM to warm up?!
Somehow it magically turned into a quote.
And the post has been edited... I can't remember me doing that either :P

@skiwi '> /* wait for the VM to warm up */ Thread.sleep(1000);' <--- Like that?

@MadaraUchiha Are you the one that quoted it? :P Just noticed the FTFY, if I can't know why, it will be a forever lasting hole in my memory
@SimonAndréForsberg I'll consider that
> new attempt?

@skiwi With a space

I think I understand now

^^ not exactly crystal-clear
Hi! I think your post might be less confusing if you posted your actual code for peer review. As it stands it's not clear what you're asking, and you've shown us stub/example code, which is off-topic on this site. Please see help center for more details. — Mat's Mug 7 secs ago
