@Phrancis for a packaged product like that, the location of purchase rarely affects it

If a bunch of people start using it, I won't be able to morph it to my custom searches as well because the amount of traffic will bury mine.

it's probably an issue with the batch

Ah, you're probably right

Maybe it has all the mouse-droppings for the batch.

shit happens
get your stomach pumped and make a nice omelet

One thing I do like about Fahrenheit is that it has some ranges which are somewhat more useful than in Celsius. Talking about temperature in the 40's or 50's is a suitable temperature range in Fahrenheit, but it is too large to talk about in the 20's in Celsius...

I hear food has a prerequisite amount of mouse/rat-related products.

@JeroenVannevel literally

aaaand I'm back out

I remember a month ago or so, the gas station had their coolers go down for a few days, I would expect they would pitch out all the perishables though

@JeroenVannevel I don't need stomach pumping. I almost threw up imagining that.

3:02 AM
@Hosch250 yeah, there's a legally acceptable amount to put in
@Phrancis I thought it was winter over there

@Quill I thought it was a legally required amount.

@Quill I'm only in Kentucky, not in Canada, so it wasn't very cold at all

these days people talk about the legal amounts that they put into burger patties, I believe

We were cold over here over Thanksgiving, but it is melting again.

Q: Scanning multiple huge files in Python

camorI'm trying to implement an algorithm able to search for multiple keys through ten huge files in Python (16 million of rows each one). 3:04 AM
It always happens.

@Mat'sMug I read that as "wind chilly factor."

okay I'm hitting a wall here.
    internal struct HookInfo
    {
        private readonly IntPtr _hookId;
        private readonly uint _keyCode;
        private readonly uint _shift;
        private readonly Action _action;

        public HookInfo(IntPtr hookId, uint keyCode, uint shift, [NotNull] Action action)
        {
            _hookId = hookId;
            _keyCode = keyCode;
            _shift = shift;
            _action = action;
        }

        public IntPtr HookId { get { return _hookId; } }
        public uint KeyCode { get { return _keyCode; } }

Oh god, COM interop!

LOL.

yes sir

3:08 AM
Saw IntPtr and GTFO of there.

It isn't that bad, except when it is.

                            var key = _hookedKeys.FirstOrDefault(k => (Keys) k.KeyCode == (Keys) wParam);
                            if (key.Action != null)
                            {
                                key.Action.Invoke();
                                processed = true;
                            }
                            else
                            {
                                Debug.Print("key.Action is null.");
                            }
how the F does "key.Action is null" get output to my debug output?

Is key.Action null?

Apparently, key.Action is null.

Perhaps you should print some more information, rather than just that unhelpful bit. ;)

3:09 AM
but ...it CANNOT BE

The first step to solving the problem is accepting that it is.

Why not?
Don't trust the [NotNull] attribute.
It lies.

Maybe it wasn't null, but now is.

but it's readonly

@Mat'sMug That LINQ statement should give you a hint: I think it's hitting the OrDefault bit.

3:10 AM
OK...
@EBrown I bet you are right.
Change that to First.

@EBrown hah, that's ...pretty darn likely

Because default(HookInfo) would have Action set to null.

totally
damn

@Mat'sMug :) That's what we're all here for.

awesome

3:12 AM

Q: Is a good practice have all flow in main?

DavidWhat is better practice in big projects? Have all the flow in the main or functions which call to others functions? I show better with two examples (in a invented language to be more legible). Example 1 (all the flow in main): function menu1 { print "Select an option." print "1. Cake."...

D. All of the above.

build started

How long does your build take?

3:13 AM
Seconds.
He should be in Excel or the debugger now.

I'm on the breakpoint

Well, then pro-workout tip: when the build passes, 10 push-ups; when the build fails, 10 sit-ups.

@EBrown I'd lose my focus.

@Mat'sMug WTFM8?
@Hosch250 I like doing it. I don't always get all 10 of each in, but I get more than one of each in. And that's something.

3:16 AM
apparently wParam doesn't contain what I thought it would

@Mat'sMug Does it ever?

If I stepped away from my computer, I'd forget all the debug values I was looking at.
@EBrown Sometimes.

@Mat'sMug RSA

WindowProc message hook received WMSETCURSOR
WindowProc message hook ignored WMSETCURSOR message (hWnd 132142)
WindowProc message hook received WMHOTKEY
WindowProc message hook handles WMHOTKEY message (hWnd 132142)
hey at least I'm receiving the WMHOTKEY messages

3:17 AM
That's good.
You just don't have proper Key data.
Which is probably bad.

and a WMSETCURSOR message for every single pixel the mouse ever moves to

wat

What are you hooking to the mouse for?

@Mat'sMug Don't you just love COM interop?

I didn't hook the mouse
I have a windows message hook tied to the VBE main window

3:19 AM
That seems like a bad idea.

I could handle mouse messages if I wanted to
@EBrown why?
how else do I pick up WMHOTKEY?

@Mat'sMug Well, for 1: COM interop, for 2: you're probably going to get a metric tonne of crap you don't need.
I have no idea how you could do it without that, it just seems like a bad idea. :/

indeed. that's why I'm ignoring 99% of the messages I see

Why a message hook? Why not a low-level key hook?

Probably more, given how often Excel users move the mouse.

Probably an edit by QPaysTaxes

Also, is it appropriate to add a link to another website to a tag FAQ?

As a side note, "for an assignment" is mostly irrelevant here, and so probably belongs in the body, not the title. You'd be better off giving more details about what this does in the title (though admittedly it's hard to get more precise than "enigma machine simulator" :P) — QPaysTaxes 6 hours ago

There's a website (see here) I want to add to the info page, if it's appropriate.

Slide-rule.

@rolfl The what?
The slide rule, also known colloquially in the United States as a slipstick, is a mechanical analog computer. The slide rule is used primarily for multiplication and division, and also for functions such as roots, logarithms and trigonometry, but is not normally used for addition or subtraction. Though similar in name and appearance to a standard ruler, the slide rule is not ordinarily used for measuring length or drawing straight lines. Slide rules exist in a diverse range of styles and generally appear in a linear or circular form with a standardized set of markings (scales) essential to performing...
Ew
@rolfl And yes, it was the only one I didn't complete

I think one of my maths classes had one of those... all the kids tried to use it as a weapon though...

I do know how to use a slide rule.. it's not for calculus, but does logarithms really well.
Crap, it's been a really, really long time..... we had a "demo" done for us, and I had my dad's slide-rule
I have never used one for real stuff, though. On the other hand, my profs were quick to demonstrate how lightning-fast an experienced person can be with one. I kid you not, a simple slide-alignment on a couple of offset markings, and he could do computations faster than you can type them in to a calculator
Impressively accurate, too.

I'm pretty happy today
we had some memory issues with our thick client application
The changes I made a week ago went live on Friday, the results are in from the clients using it yesterday: I cut the memory usage in half!
there's still more to go though, the client is still going up to 350MB of usage.
I've somehow got to reduce that to sub 100..
I'm getting mixed content warnings on github wtf

9:00 AM
@DanPantry that's awesome :)

@mjolka thanks :-)

What is that app doing that it's possible to get the mem to less than a seventh???

Time to break out the dev tools! I reckon we've got some nasty closure leaks
@Vogel612 it's a thick client running in IE
Plus its using jQuery and at least half of it was written by developers who cared more about getting it out quickly than getting it out with quality
jQuery itself is incredibly bad for memory usage because it eagerly caches any element you reference

Zak
IE and JQuery, truly a match made in Hell.

But that's irrelevant because we're so tied to jQuery at this point we can't remove it
(And you wonder why I hate jQuery)
Luckily Chrome comes with some rad dev tools :-)

9:04 AM
Yea I had the pleasure of using them once for real

@Zak a big part of the problem is admittedly IE
I'm largely unavailable to replicate the memory leak on Chrome
s/unavailable/unable

Can't you throw it out of the mix?

unfortunately, no. We're a Microsoft partner.
You also have to bear in mind that a large part of our issues are caused by the fact we are trying to host 20 users on a VM server with 8GB of RAM.
Instead of, you know, just letting the users access the website on their own laptop (instead of using the VM) given that it is only avaliable on the internet network.
But, again, out of my control
This is super annoying
I just hammered the system for 5 minutes and the memory graph is as it should be: raises, then GC kicks in and it drops to normal.
The application itself only uses 30MB of RAM. Okay, that's not great, but it's not enough to make you spike up to 225MB...

Zak
@DanPantry you missed all the excitement yesterday

@Zak I did see the aftermath
So I am completely and wholly unable to replicate the memory leak in Chrome.
Instead of switching users to use Chrome, I am being asked to continue to use IE, which does not nearly have the resolution of dev tools that Chrome has.
sigh

@Duga rolled back and commented

9:44 AM
holy fk IE..
I just got figures for the memory leak on two of our virtual machines
One of the virtual machines has an average of 400MB RAM per user on IE alone
and that's 100 MB higher than the other virtual machine

@Vogel612 You've got to create automata for those?

the automata aren't even the problem. It's mostly just a huge time-effort in there

Looks easy enough to me, but I did pass that class already

That's drawing the automata as illustration, and then checkign what transitions are available and write all steps?

@Zak the last section is IMO too fixated on the incident

More fun for unit testing... what should I unit test? I can't check if the time is equal to now as there is a delay in evaluating statements, do I also need to mock the clock?

10:33 AM
that ^^

additionally I disagree with some of the points you make wrt. the project euler 1-5 question...

system clock is an external resource, so yes

How did we not see that post yesterday Heslacher?

Q: What makes a question too broad for code review?

Nick UdellI was pondering the close reason today and I can't think of an instance where a question that is on-topic for Code Review is too broad. When is a question too broad? How could a too-broad question be edited to be acceptable?

nghrif basically sums up my thoughts there.

Dunno. I didn't search yesterday ;-)

I thought I did, I guess it was late in the day, I might've been finishing up in work.

@Vogel612 Well, gotta pull examples from somewhere :) and they're both examples of posts I consider to be perfectly useful questions, but which a large portion of the community do not.

hmm... so why are you trying to establish "consensus" against apparent consensus by the current status of these questions?

But mocking the clock is no fun

Don't unit-test your frameworks...
ignore the dateCreated in your unit-tests
you can reasonably assume that grails gets that one right..

That's what you'd hope at least
Funny that I cannot find what the actual type of those properties is in the documentation :D
Could be Date, could also be Instant

It's a big framework, if they don't get that part right they screwed something up.

Zak
@Vogel612 I'm not trying to argue about the status of those questions directly (hence why I didn't link them). I'm just using them as examples of types of questions which, IMO, should be perfectly acceptable for CR.

which the community seemingly disagrees with, considering these questions are closed...

Zak
@Vogel612 Yes, hence the Meta post trying to establish a community consensus. The question is for the community. My answer is my opinion.

okay :)

Zak
@Vogel612 IIRC, EBrown's question had 5 VTC and 5VTR at one point. I'd say pretty indicative of a lack of consensus :)

10:45 AM
true that

@Zak It's not that unheard of though.

Zak
I could also point to the fact that His Euler#1-5 is closed and my Euler#1-3, despite also being brought up, is not, as evidence of a lack of consensus.
Not to mention I'm pretty sure Mat reads all the VBA questions, and he's never indicated that mine needed changing.

@Zak EBrown's question isn't closed anymore

Don't know how well I articulated myself but I've answered now.

Zak
@Heslacher huh, must've missed that
@SuperBiasedMan Got my upvote.
