@Mat'sMug I was quite surprised at the number of sounds I haven't heard before!

Does anyoen have experience with Excelsior JET?

Never heard of it unfortunately

it is an AOT compiler for Java, unfortunately only works until Java7
don't have the full version either, just a trial, so cannot do full AOT

@SimonAndréForsberg “ahead of time”, antonym to JIT

8:13 PM
Antonym to 'never' ?
JIT is a subset of AOT... right?

@rolfl good point if we'd be splitting hairs. However, AOT implies a separate compilation step (javac is an AOT-bytecode-compiler), whereas JIT happens immediately before, during, or between the execution.

wow, I just added that my program should draw a green cube at the origin... and it does so!
I hadn't touched the program in a few weeks and there was som eunfinished code when I looked at it

(WCII OST playing)

@Mat'sMug Same here, on repeat! (Even though it's 40+ minutes long... so it hasn't repeated yet)

and I do not want to have to do this ever again -> pastebin.com/hrfHrM97

8:22 PM
This soundtrack makes me feel like I'm attacking my code base! Embarking on a refactoring campaing!

@skiwi The miracle of the moments when code actually does what you want it to!

Q: How to turn 201 queries into 1?

Carl PorterI have a PHP web app that manages contacts. It has four main functions that display: contacts with upcoming birthdays; the 20 most viewed contacts; all contacts (200 limit) plus their phone number and; a contact's full details. I started off with just people as the contact and all was working fi...

^^ wut?

Someone needs to learn JOIN

like, ...damn!

8:25 PM
And not use SELECT *
But at least it's prepared queries!

according to my calculatiosn my origin and some other random point are exactly on the same place

That's what he's asking for ... the code is working, just slow.

Please post your Contact, Person and Company table structure, at least the relevant fields (PK's & FK's) - you'll get an answer in less time than it takes to say "INNER JOIN" ;) — Mat's Mug 16 secs ago

@amon I can inform that my Game of Life / Cellular Automata project is going along well. My game logic is fine, but my UI could have been better. I just have some basic Game of Life and Rule functionality included for now. I'd love any s and any other feedback.
I already have some things planned for the Cellular Automata, but I'd like to hear what others think as well

@SimonAndréForsberg The board is variable-size? fixed size would feel less weird.

8:35 PM
@amon Yes, it is variable-size. I plan on making it be variable-size but still feel less weird.
The most annoying thing I think is that the board size switches so often, but that I can do something about.

@SimonAndréForsberg coding anything fixed? You don't know the guy!

oh crap, out of stars.

hahahahah

TS, @Mat'sMug.

(can't self-star)

8:37 PM
Flexibility is my thing.

Like IKEA - built from parts ;)

But integrating that Flexibility with a decent UI, that's where the real challenge for me is.

I thought you were coding in Java @SimonAndréForsberg

I have so many ideas for what to do with this that you can't even imagine...

@skiwi Java and an Allen key

8:38 PM
I am, @skiwi. I'm using GWT which compiles my Java to JavaScript :)

o.o what sorcery is that

Google's Sorcery.

The best kind!

Google Witchood Temptation

GWT = Google Web Toolkit
@Mat'sMug You must not speak when I don't have stars!
4

8:39 PM
interesting... most definately

Once again many thanks to @rolfl the monkey who told me about how lovely GWT is. I haven't regretted it one bit.

hmm, whenever I reset my scene in my 3D prog, objects disappear
always the same box disappears

@SimonAndréForsberg : a slider for variable animation speed

and the position of the next element becomes the old box' position
this is driving me mad

@amon Noted! (as I can't star it...)
You can actually use both Game of Life and Rule 30 at the same time, by using this link. Beware though, things tend to go slooooooow after a while :)
Use at your own risk.
I am not responsible for any unfinished Code Review answers that gets lost because of your browser crashing.

8:45 PM
it's still growing
it tends to get a bit slow at 10K positions

yep. It mainly depends on how many of them is changing though.
You should have seen the speed before, when the entire map was being redrawn every time... went slow really quick. Now it just redraws the changes.

sounds better

Anyways, I'll have to say good night for now. At least I've put up the first official "playable" version of my Cellular Automata project. That was my goal for today. Mission Accomplished.
Night folks.

night simon

8:58 PM
'night!

Bit slow there Mr.QC ?

was talking with my boss...

Hi Boss!

Has Productivity beta shut down?
nope

I don't have the slightest clue what is going wrong in my program, great

9:06 PM
PICNIC?

PICNIC?

It's a monkey acronym for a Code-18

o.o ok
I have a lead, my debug line is causing graphical glitches
System.out.println("Drawable.putAllData(drawables).capacity() = " + Drawable.putAllData(drawables).capacity());
which in theory should not change anything
it even cannot change anything graphically
no way if this is the error

Println is a synchronized operation... could be doing a few things....

9:14 PM
this is bad
updated code:
I thought I was just putting data, which is a FloatBuffer, in another FloatBuffer
however on the background when copying the data, it was also advancing the cursor in the buffer of course
which was resulting in pretty weird behaviour

I think I "stole a checkmark"
@user2180125 in all fairness, it's really vals' answer that caught the performance issue. If you're accepting my answer for the code review, I'll take it; but if you're accepting my answer for the advice about taking instantiation out of the loop, vals' answer should have the checkmark ;) — Mat's Mug 8 mins ago
Although the other answer doesn't review the code

goodnight people

'night!

Goodnight @skiwi
@user3190631 How does one get banned from chat for 3604 days?

oh, missed that: This user is suspended on the parent site and cannot chat for 3604 days.
well that explains the 404
@syb0rg it also explains why you're probably not going to get an answer to that question ;)

That person called Jamal, running around doing obvious mod things... that wasn't me. :-P

interesting

Like palacsint, I also have an alternate account. :P

wait, I'm all messed-up now.. so @palacsint is really @200_success?
or you are?

9:32 PM
Nah, can't be me. I'm not that programming-savvy.

doesn't add up. 200 would have some C# tag score...

@Jamal it looks like this user edited their question to fix what a reviewer reviewed and then got rejected trying to edit the code in the answer. will you look at this please? codereview.stackexchange.com/revisions/42708/4

@syb0rg so that's what's behind that helmet?

@Mat'sMug thank God for the Helmet....LOL JK

@rolfl ????

Something really wrong must have happened.

@Malachi: I'll take a look at it later.

@Jamal should I flag it?

So I was thinking about this chat bot idea, and figured: "Why do I not program it in C++ with @Jamal and @Yuushi?"

9:37 PM
@Malachi: Yes you may.

@Jamal - can you tell this person to be more appreciative and sensitive to the delicate egos of the code reviewers: ?
Unknown column 'ctype' in 'field list'Carl Porter 3 mins ago
(just kidding)

@CarlPorter really? you can fix that, right? (type is a reserved word, and I was not inclined to quote it when I tested it Am I putting more effort in to this than you? — rolfl 4 mins ago
^^ excellent!!

Well, every now and then I feel like people take advantage of me ... and I need to get a seond opinion when I rant back at them ;-)

3 upvotes on your comment good enough?

9:42 PM
(nothing like telling the mods: hey, I think I may be being a 'bad boy'.... is this OK?

(got [badge:pundit] yet?)
running late, gotta go - see y'all later!

Bye!

bye ... yeah, got pundit

I find it strange that I have more profile views that William Morris.

It's your pretty ("it's a trap") face
For the same reason users like codereview.stackexchange.com/users/37167/user13500 get profile views from @Mat'sMug
hey @ChrisW ... I'm going home soon, you can go through and edit-fix all my answers ;-)

9:52 PM
Do they need edit-fixing?

Naah... but you and I have had different answers on many things today.

Oh. Well, diversity!
The only question we both answered today was WHERE NOT IN. Yesterday we both answered "Making a word processor".

If you still don't like the answer at least there's something to comment on now.

@Malachi: It's still a bit hard for me to tell. If you believe it's invalidation, you can roll back the question.
^ I have also cleared the VLQ flag, despite the improvement. I was about to add a comment myself, but it appears the downvotes gave the message.

11:11 PM
@Malachi: You're right; that was mentioned in the answer. I must've read through it hastily at first. I have rolled back, added a comment, and cleared your flag.

AeronelI've just finished writing my first game, it's a clone of the classic pong game for Linux and Mac only. You will need SDL 2.0, SDL_ttf 2.0 and SDL_Mixer 2.0 to compile it. @Jamal thank you for your hard work Jamal
I am 3 short of 100 Helpful Flags!!!

:D

I just realized I don't have any of the nice answer badges....

And good work to you, too! I'd really like to crack down on invalidating edits (due to ignorance or refusal), and I don't have to be the only one looking for them.

11:22 PM
^^ the guy retracted their downvote. Still, 9 votes on the "performance-specific" answer, 2 on the accepted "code-review" answer. Does the community really get what this site is all about?
(and I have no way of knowing the rep score of whoever that was)
@Jamal you can see deleted comments, I'd like to know if that user is > 200... please?

A: Why is my C# program slower than my Python program?

Mat's MugI don't know python so I'll focus on the c# code. Your program is coded upside down. One would expect void Main at the top, with the more specialized code below. Method names in C# are expected to consistently follow PascalCasing convention. Only your Main method does that, and if you were to a...

(or is that mod-abuse?)

Yes, I can. What exactly should I look for?

I'd like to know if that user is <200 or >200 rep score.
I was driving when I got the notification so I couldn't click it right away, and the comment was removed and the DV retracted before I could see anything
Like, if it's a >200 user, that person needs a refresher on what constitutes an answer on CR. ..Or maybe I'm just over-reacting.

The downvoter, you mean?

yeah :)
My guess is that they retracted their DV after reading the comments

He has less than 200 rep.

11:37 PM
As I thought.
I would have somewhat liked the DV+comment to remain, that was clearly an opportunity to educate a newcomer about what CR answers are all about!
(BTW thanks Santa!)
<<<<< look, the devil!!

And I have just posted an answer. Mostly a general one as I don't quite feel like reading through all the code now.

raviolicode - is that somewhere between spaghetti and lasagna?

@Mat'sMug: To be fair, there was at least one moment when I said that, but never posted anything. There were answers after that, it it no longer mattered.

I kid, I kid ;P
@ChrisW this looks like a decent answer, no?

hi all

It looks like it, yes. I don't know RoR so I can't won't up-vote it (in case it's wrong). But people who down-voted it and/or who know RoR should consider it.
