Hello everyone. :)

Morning, @kleinfreund

Hey Simon
You know what.. I'm still in a bit of a trouble regarding the language of my website. xD
I like it being English, that's cool. But there is one problem, because I will also need it as a portfolio site, as a reference. Some jobs I may get in the future will most likely be in Germany and only giving them an English page will not be attractive, right @Simon?

9:18 AM
That's true. You should probably make it in both German and English then :)

That's a possibility. What do you think about only having the blog in English?
Hm, probably not a good idea.
Either multilingual or not.

Depends on who the blog is for. Are you targeting a german audience or an english?

9:38 AM
basically, all Germans know English, so i'd write most of the stuff in English. It might however be sensible to keep the legal stuff in German

Q: Fluent interface and polymorphism

DarioPI would like to improve the interfaces of some polymorphic classes going from positional to named parameters and I came up with the fluent interface. The following is the most clean, compact and compilable (-std=c++11 required) example that I have been able to come up with: #include <iostream> ...

For the blog, it's probably a mixed audience. I have no set topic, but it's probably going to be somewhat related to web development/design and also some personal things. Maybe photography.

Especially for technical articles, it seems strange and stupid to write in German. It just sounds ridiculous. I tried it.
@amon Sure, most Germans can speak English. Especially the younger, web-savvy generation. But I know a lot of older people who can't say that of themselves.
So I need to have the portfolio and profile in German for sure.
I probably need to serve the whole thing both in German and English.

11:07 AM
Bilinguality ftw!

Well, that's going to be quite the task.
Challenge accepted.

@rolfl we need a query that grabs users between 100-200 rep score, weeds out those inactive for > 90 days, and graphs out rep score progression since October, to address this: "But in spite of this, there’s still a humongous bed of users sitting in the ~100-200 reputation range and not actually in the major privilege levels. So for where-ever all the votes are going, it ain’t accumulating." ...I think.
^^ actually, grab users that were between 100-200 in October

Well I was one of them !
So there is at least one :P

@Marc-Andre if you're representative of that user group, then we've got another check here!
I somewhat hope expect to see a community manager post something on meta about CR's graduation before Easter.

Sep'13 184 rep, today 419 !

2:53 PM
^^ scratch that, make it > 500!

I just see we have six 10k users (privilege: moderator tools/flags), and over thirty 3k users (privilege: close votes), which means that we'd probably “survive” a graduation.

Well I'm planning to do it but maybe not today :P

@Marc-Andre if you want you could hit 500 and score a [badge:mortarboard] :)

Got a lot of work to do today! So won't have a lot of time to answers question :(

2:58 PM
Yes indeed ! I was one of them one year from now :(

hello @Jamal-the-sleepless-mod!
@SimonAndréForsberg we're more than just keeping up actually: we're down to 681 unsnaswered questions.
2

Hmm. I'm just comparing Workplace (which recently graduated) with CR. Workplace was generally less active (only 7 questions per day, we have 30), but has more answers (3.5 vs 1.8), and more high-rep users to sustain the site (despite having fewer users in total). I.e. we probably still have pronounced user retention problems.

@Mat'sMug Awesome.

@amon we can't rewrite history. What happened in 2012-2013 is going to plague our user retention stats forever. We need to factor out this data as statistical abnormalities.

mostly I try to go off of views and number of answers, if there are a number of answers and one recently, and number of views is high then I would protect

Another reason ti protect is when there is a question that is close to being converted to CW because it has lots of answers.

I protected that php one then I saw it wasn't active since it was asked

Can a question become CW because of the number of answers? I thought it was only edits.

abuzittin gillifircaThere are two design issues I can see: Game class stands for two things, game as a whole and game logic component. I don't understand this part. When I say game-as-whole, I mean it is a top level component that has a aggregation (HAS-A) relationship with subcomponents. When I read Progr...

I'm having a hard time parsing all the feedback
Especially because it's not formatted very well

@Mat'sMug yes

But I sorta thought in general it was a bad idea to try and loosely couple any application to its framework (i.e. not feasible)

you mean decouple a XNA project ...from XNA?

I dunno if that's what he means
"Frameworks like XNA are infrastructure, and you would want to isolate it from the game logic."

@davidkennedy85 in case it was never said ... welcome to the 2nd monitor ;)

5:09 PM
Hey rolfl

You are missing your beanie though ... ;-)

I know D:

@davidkennedy85 it should be possible. I mean, it's possible to decouple logic from a ASP.NET or ASP.NET MVC app from its respective framework, isn't it?

True
Hmmmm, he did say decouple the logic while I've been thinking decouple the graphics...
But that's not really logic is it, that's more framework type stuff...
/me head explodes
I want to go back to web development land

Haven't looked at all the details, but let's say your game logic needs to draw - you'll want a dependency on SpriteBatch I guess. Do you mean decoupling the framework as in wrapping SpriteBatch with an interface and coding against that abstraction? Could work, but IMO it's overkill.
Like, don't fight the framework, embrace it!
OTOH, you might want to consider what would happen if you wanted to "port" your game code to another framework.

Like, don't fight the framework codereview addition, embrace it!

rolfl is that some kind of meme thing?

I still don't get it
Memes are like bad inside jokes

Those are puns

5:21 PM
Not really, a good pun you can pick up on even if you're not privy
Assuming there is such a thing as a good pun

@davidkennedy85 what do you do when you have to derive an Entity Framework context from DbContext? Sounds like similar requirement to having to derive an XNA game from the Game class no?

@davidkennedy85 yeah, inside joke... it is our experience that once people start engaging in the chat side of CodeReview... that they stick around....

Wait a minute. There are good puns!

becomes addictive.

I do them all the time with my dad.

5:22 PM
^^ doesn't count if they're in German, nobody gets 'em. ;P

Germans get them!
Except idiots. Idiots don't get puns.

No, they shop at IKEA ;)
(^^ German-specific)

Mat I'm not ignoring you by the way I'm still thinking about the last thing you said

Also, there are a few memes that do repeat in here, in fact, we have them documented, moslty..... (and I am the sarcastic monkey)..... : meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/999/…

Ohhhhh
@rolfl I just got this

5:24 PM

This answer has largely been surpassed by the main meme collectionamon Feb 19 at 18:14

Heh sed ;p
So no it wasn't a meme but it was an inside joke

meh, not even. just

Should we take this to english.stackexchange.com ??
^^ monkey business indeed... ^^ ... now, BTW

@kleinfreund no offense intended with the IKEA thing, @SimonAndréForsberg mentioned something about Germans making fun of IKEA a while back, something that translated to "idiots buy just about anything" and that spelled "I.K.E.A." in German ...I assumed you'd know the joke, ..or is it just a Swedish thing?

5:30 PM
I don't know the joke, but I'm not taking things like this as offense. No worries. ;)

IDK, maybe your whole appartment is filled with IKEA furniture! (half of mine is!)

Dec 30 '13 at 17:55, by Nobody
in germany some say ikea means: idioten kaufen eben alles ("idiots just buy everything")

@Mat'sMug - you trying to dig a hole deeper than the one I just dug?

@Jamal yeah, that!

@Jamal - well, that was timely.
Here's the nut-bucket .... hey @syb0rg

@rolfl Hello. Sorry, busy.

wasn't even Simon!

Blame him anyway.....

I work right next to IKEA
I don't know if its harmful to my health or not
I assume the sign radiates cancer or something

Here in Canada we have special monkeys that shop in IKEA for you ... it turns out that is bad for the monkey's health .... :(

@Jamal Did you delete my comment about the accept mark ? If yes, was it because it was out-of-place or because it was obsolete ?

Because I was sure it was that one.

If it's that important, I can look through my history of deleted comments. :-)

No not at all, I was just wondering if my comment was a good one.

Q: C++ object class review

JosephI have implemented a basic object class in C++, and I was making sure that I have implemented everything efficiently and safely, as I made a few mistakes while making it, which I corrected, but I could have left a few more mistakes behind: class object { private: class dummy { public...

It was a comment about demanding the op to not accept my answer and wait a little bit for other answer, but I can't find it anymore.

No deleted comments on that one, either.

Go Fish?

Well sorry can't remember which one it was

Oh wait, I found it. It was for this post. Someone had flagged some comments as obsolete.
