12:05 AM
@KyleKanos Weirdo horoscope teller.

@0celo7 Can't say I care for that diagram. I'd have drawn the peaks narrower, myself.

@dmckee Cool.

Is it wrong to want to downvote on SO because of horrendous formatting?

12:25 AM
@KyleKanos Isn't downvoting at your discretion? Unless it's string theory, of course, then it's fucking heinous intellectual murder.
How is Witcher 3 only 23GB. @KyleKanos Quick, I need a coin flip!

Well it's kinda ignoring the content of the post for something somewhat is really a personal taste

@KyleKanos Does it make the question harder to answer?

tails

Welp.

@0celo7 No, just makes it look like OP cannot program for the life of him

12:27 AM
I got heads.
I just bought a game without consulting the Kyle Kanos coin machine.

@KyleKanos I've been known to try editing it to fix it first. And sometime the OP gets huffy and re-uglifies it. Then you have to decide how vindictive you're feeling.

On 5 year old posts though?

But in all honesty, formatting bad enough to distract from the message makes the post less useful.
If, in your judgement, it makes it "not useful" then...
@KyleKanos There is no time-limit on making things better around here. If you think the post can be salvaged that way, of course.

Oh it's got an answer.
And is a dupe too:

Q: Vectors of different lengths from a `for` cycle in R: merging in a data frame

AvitusI have the following elementary issue in R. I have a for (k in 1:x){...} cycle which produces numerical vectors whose length depends on k. For each value of k I produce a single numerical vector. I would like to collect them as rows of a data frame in R, if possible. In other words, I would lik...

12:42 AM
A watched Steam game never downloads.

1:32 AM
@0celo7 I don't buy that

@ACuriousMind Shit. High graphics...on 800p. 1080p goes down to 20fps.
Make that low settings.
Jesus Christ this game is taxing.
Fuck, not even 30 on the lowest settings at 800p. What the hell?

Well played:

A: Does Mr. Fantastic have to wear fantastic clothes?

RichardIn the 2005 film version of Fantastic Four, Reed (and crew) are wearing specially designed suits that contain 'unstable molecules': SUE: The synthetics act as a second skin, adapting to your individual needs ... REED: Material made from self-regulating unstable molecules? I've been...

@ACuriousMind Refunding...I'm upset.
Well, now I have $60 in my Steam wallet.

Send it to me?

Any game recommendations?
@KyleKanos No.

1:47 AM
Worth a short
I don't even know what my SteamID is :/
Been like 6 years since I last was on

God damn it, I was really looking forward to that game.

Actually, I found my user page: steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197962765444
October 2009 was the last time I signed onto Steam...

@KyleKanos What are some good (older) Steam games?

HL1 & 2, obviously
Portal 1 was good too
Those are pretty much the only games I played on Steam

How much gamplay do HL1&2 have?

1:58 AM
Wait, I forgot Counter Strike
Fast way or slow way?

When is 3 coming out again?

@0celo7 2076 or so

@KyleKanos Normal.

@0celo7 Okay, slow way is about 2 hours for HL1 and 3-4 for HL2

That's really short...

1:59 AM
Depending mostly on how bad you are at keeping away from enemies and dying
They were also made in an era when (American) VGs were "that" short

I love how Skyrim is still in the top 10 most played today.

Don't compare an ARPG with an FPS
2

I'm not really looking for FPSs.
I want to get into RPGs more.

FF7 & 8 are on Steam
7 has about 30 hours game play (slow speed)
8 has a little less

Stop making that distinction. Assume I'll be slow.

2:03 AM
Okay
I tried power-leveling in 7 and took over 100 hours
(Power-leveling as in trying to beef up character to have 255 in all stats)
Even with some hard level grinding and doing things the "old-fashioned" way, you can easily reach 60 hours
With 8, you just have to realize that getting into battles hurts you (all enemies scale with you, so as you gain levels, so to do the bosses)
But, oddly, boss fights don't give you experience (instead, loads of ability points). So you can beat the game around level 10

Einstein was lurking in the middle of the dark kitchen floor. I think my cat just tried to assassinate me and make it look like I fell.
@KyleKanos Hmm, interesting, but it means nothing to me :D

Well buy the game, play it, then find meaning to it

Next Steam sale, OK?

No, now. While you have $60 credit

Which FFs should I put on my wish list?
@KyleKanos I have a birthday coming up.

2:09 AM
7 & 8

All others are garbage?

No, 4 is good, but not as long gameplay as 7&8
Never played 13

XIV looks good graphics wise.

WR is 5.5 hours, so probably 50 hours of gameplay normally?

I could run XIV.
I've heard the X-- ones aren't that good.
@KyleKanos 7&8 are on my wishlist.

2:51 AM
I've tried to derive the equation $V = L \dot{I}$ for an inductor from Maxwell's equations. I keep getting the wrong sign. I'd like to ask about this but it's a check-my-work question by construction.
How to do?
This is a ridiculous amount of fun.

lol 18 downvotes within the same night ! This must be a record or somethin XD

3:58 AM
@Gaurav Nah. Go to meta.stackexchange.com/questions, choose the votes tab, click on the last page at the bottom, pick a couple and get the timeline for that post.
Then scroll to the bottom. I picked that one because I know the OP's reputation from early in Stack Overflow's history.
Ooohh .. this one is particularly bad: meta.stackexchange.com/posts/99062/timeline

@dmckee Could you answer a quantum question for me?

@Anthony Er ... maybe?

I'm wondering where they got the control-modulated Hamiltonian from.
$U^{\dagger}_c(t)HU_c(t)$

Not a clue. But that is a similarity transformation.

What is a similarity transformation?

4:14 AM
They have lots of interesting properties in group theory (which means in quantum mechanics).

Thank you!

5 hours later…
9:20 AM
@0celo7 feynman also drew almost the same diagram.
@0celo7 as I've said before if you are looking for a new RPG go for Dark Souls I ;)
Does this kind of thing happen in college or is it just a bogus thing to get attention?

10:10 AM
Looks bogus to me.
But you never know ;-)

1 hour later…
11:23 AM
are we able to calculate the wave function in a double slit experiment and what happens at the slits?
I mean we have the wave function $\Psi(x,t)_B$ that describes the state of the photon before the slits. Including the interactions at the slits are we able to calculate what is the wave function $\Psi_A$ after the photon passes through the slit?

11:55 AM
@gonenc Is Dark Souls sandbox? I'm kinda over linear games.
I've heard Dragon Age is good, too.

@0celo7 it is pretty close to skyrim as in you are free to do whatever you want
but it is not like there is mission you have to do
you have to decide what you want to do first
and the story is not as obvious as skyrim

Is it really ridiculously hard?

@0celo7 well.....
I should say it is not ridiculously hard but it is way harder than skyrim

Well is a hole in the ground.

but you dont hate the game as you go along because it is hard
you like it even more :D
I've spent 100h of game time to finish the game

11:58 AM
Is Dark Souls 2 the one where you have to do some crazy nonobvious parkour to get an important item?

and although you have no map to show you where you are I know the whole map by hearth because of the difficulty.
@0celo7 I started playing DS 2 but I didn't like it quite as much as DS1 so I stopped playing

Are there towns, etc.?

@0celo7 There are so-called bonfires where you can heal up and "save"
but there are places with special names eg anor londo or firelink shrine
but it is not like skyrim towns
where you have dozens of "computer people" (forgot the abbreviation)

NPC

^yes

12:02 PM
I wonder if I'll be able to run Fallout 4.

Didn't you buy a new computer recently?

Laptop.
It's not optimized for gaming.

You can visit this site and see if it can really run it
btw I've never played Fallout 4, not a game person myself :)

Already tried.
Fallout 4 is not out yet.
I wonder if preordering the game does anything special.

@0celo7 well I haven't played Fallout $i \quad \forall i \in \mathbb N$
@0celo7 it costs less for sure
but you are paying for something and you are not getting it right away.

12:05 PM
It's $60 preorder...

so basically you are supporting the developers
@0celo7 it'll cost probably much more after the release

yep, they make money off the interest

Games are always $60.
Or less.

@0celo7 Well sims 4 aint 60$ it is 60 EUR
@0celo7 anyhow do you always buy games?

Walk into GameStop and hand them monies.

12:11 PM
@0celo7 what about downloading it from not-so-legal places?

Only if it's for a platform I can't reasonably obtain.

@0celo7 as in having ridiculously high prices?
@0celo7 does steam give discount for your birthday?

Antiquated systems

or when will be the mass discount again

No clue

12:14 PM
like the summer sale

Probably Winter, but I don't know if Fallout 4 will be on sale.
I think @KyleKanos has talked me into FF.
I still need to play Fallout New Vegas as well.

@0celo7 That is too far away :/

Gotta go, cya

ciao

1:04 PM
Where is that Canadian kid? AP scores are out.

1:39 PM
Got an email update from the data job test thing. Apparently there was a 'mistake' on the data they sent out.
The dates that I've been screwing around with the last several days (and finally fixed yesterday) weren't supposed to be so screwy

@0celo7 how is your ap results?
@KyleKanos dates?

2 days ago, by Kyle Kanos
Anyone know how I might interpret a timestamp of 40983.91072 when it should be something like 19-03-2012 10:49?

@KyleKanos Oh I remember!
How was that suppose to look like?

Turns out you can dump it into Excel (or LibreOffice Calc, as I used) and change it from decimal to Date
Not sure the exact math, but it works

@KyleKanos that's annoying

1:47 PM
Yeah, but they've updated the file to remove those 409xx.xxxxx numbers and have the normal dd-mm-yyyy hh:mm setting

@KyleKanos â—”_â—”

Q: Is helping others grasp difficult ideas, concepts or theories not considered giving an answer?

Nicolle DransfeldtI know you could just leave a comment, but not in this case I couldn't. I just found this awesome app while researching on my passion, physics. I stumbled across a question about time dilation, not the easiest concept to grasp, and a commenter had his own question within his comment, just wasn't ...

@gonenc All 5s.
@KyleKanos So the interview had you figuring out some weird system that was in fact broken??

@0celo7 Not intentionally, it seems, but yes

I bet the test was for you to contact them and tell them they f'ed up.

Someone else must have
They had a disclaimer on the downloads page that said Some of the data needs to be cleaned

Someone else got the job then.

2:19 PM
So I didn't think twice about it

Ash Carter is being roasted.

@0celo7 I assume 5 is the best grade?

@0celo7 Well, your laptop isn't built for gaming, after all, what did you expect!

@gonenc You assume correctly.

@0celo7 congrats

2:30 PM
@ACuriousMind I expected the game to be playable.

If anyone wonders what's going on on meta, I'm adding because this is such a frequent issue I think it'll be good to have a convenient list of all relevant meta questions. Feel free to add the tag to old questions where it fits.

@gonenc Thanks!

Does anyone else here feel that the words quantized and discretized should not be used synonymously as technical terms in physics?
Classical systems can get quantized. Values of quantities can be discretized.

Yes, they should not be used synonymously. Who did?

Isn't "quantum" just "discrete" in Greek?

2:37 PM
@0celo7 Your point being? (Also, it's Latin for "how big/how much", not Greek)

No point.
How big?

@KyleKanos This time, I read a question title "Is time quantized?", but it's something that has bugged me for a long time

remembers Latin class

@0celo7 Yes, "quantus/-a/-um" is a question word in Latin

How do I parallel transport a vector along $x^\mu(\lambda)$? Don't I just use the directional derivative on the vector $v^\nu$, $dx^\mu/d\lambda \nabla_\mu v^\nu$ ?

2:40 PM
What is the word for "amount", Menge? I learned Latin in Germany, so both are rusty.
The Latin word, that is.

@0celo7 quantitas or multitudo come to mind

I recognize the second.
@gonenc I believe you must solve the parallel transport equation.

^Yup

Which is just covariant derivative along curve (tensor) = 0

@0celo7 Ok. did a silly mistake in the calculation :)

3:24 PM
Hmmm...this paper is supposedly doing QFT, but it calls the Fourier modes of a field wavefunctions. Urge to slap someone rises.
It even explicitly solves the equations of motions. There are no operators or Hilbert spaces here, I am confused.

You're probably just reading the comics

@ACuriousMind In the vast majority of physics quantum papers (that I have read) the Hilbert space is NEVER mentioned...it is one of the most unnerving things for a mathematician, or mathematical physicist.

@ACuriousMind Sounds like my kind of terminology abuse!
Although calling an operator a wave function is a bit extreme.
Or...not an operator? I'd need to see this art work.

@0celo7 strictly speaking, the Fourier modes of a field are not an operator :-D ....neither a wavefunction anyways

@yuggib Operator valued distribution?

3:33 PM
Hmm...perhaps this is meant to be completely classical, and they just confused me with their "Schrödinger-like question"...

Or is that the whole thing?

@0celo7 If you really want to, I'm reading these notes on the Randall-Sundrum model

@0celo7 the whole thing is an ovd yes

I'm still learning rigorous QFT, but it's pretty boring...give me a few months to make some headway.

Aha, looking into other papers, it seems to indeed be meant to be a classical treatment.

3:35 PM
@yuggib So what are the modes then?
I know the field modes in string theory are called operators.

@0celo7 unluckily, in rigorous QFT there is very few to be learnt (apart from free theories, or a lot of mathematics) ;-)

@yuggib I'm reading Wald's algebraic treatment of QFT in curved spacetime, which also covers the flat spacetime formulation.

@0celo7 the modes? rigorously, nothing that you can make use of...they may become well-defined operators if you put the theory on a lattice or something like that (depends on the precise definitions, mostly of the relative Hilbert space, the one never mentioned)

Hah...who needs rigor.

@0celo7 All that is of no use when verifying the axioms is beyond our reach for the theories we commonly use :P

3:40 PM
@0celo7 Well, I don't know it well, but from the subject I suppose Wald can be said to be rigorous for a theoretical physics point of view...

Who needs axioms...

Notation pet peeve: Don't write "$A \subset B$" when you mean "$A$ is a summand in $B$"!

Summand?

So on this application, they're asking me "What makes you unique" would it be bad for me to write, I am not a beautiful and unique snowflake, I'm the same decaying organic matter as everyone else?
3

Depends how much you want the job.

3:47 PM
@KyleKanos That's not an answer to the question :P

@ACuriousMind It is sorta though, it's saying I am not unique, just in a "poetic" manner

@KyleKanos The DNA pattern (supposing you don't have twins), the fingerprints, the voice, are acceptable answers
from a strictly logical point of view....did not give a good impression either anyways

@0celo7 Summand.

@yuggib I have twin daughters, does that count?

@ACuriousMind summand of what into what?

3:49 PM
@ACuriousMind Summand?
Read: what the heck is a Summand?

Uh...my dictionaries tell me the word is summand also in English: When I have $B = A + C$, then $A$ and $C$ are summands in the sum $B$.

I get that...

@KyleKanos so your DNA mapping is prone to be non-injective...it's looking bad for the evaluation of uniqueness

@KyleKanos Unless they are your clones, your DNA should still be unique

What does it have to do with sets?

3:50 PM
@0celo7 Nothing!

@ACuriousMind Well cloning me twice but changing their gender would be quite a feat

O0 but \subset

But some physicists insist on writing $A \subset S$ when they mean that $A$ is a summand in the action $S$.

OH

@KyleKanos I have no evidence you are indeed male.

3:51 PM
Yes, I've seen that before.

@ACuriousMind well, if $A,B,C$ are natural numbers, the notation $A\subset B$ is correct, provided $B=A+C$

@ACuriousMind Hmm. Well I guess the best I can do is tell you that I am a male
-3
Q: Why physics hasn't broke through the "glassern ceiling" of homogenity in time?

kryomaximPhysics assumes in EVERY theory that a physical system is time-translation invariant and also space-translation invariant, i.e. physical laws are regarded to be the same on the whole spacetime. Why there is no theory that has not these invariances? Why physicists are assuming that the following ...

^Starts out nice, then finishes with a great WTF?

@ACuriousMind We have no evidence of anything regarding him. Not even his PhD

@yuggib Hah, didn't think of that!
Unfortunately for them, I think these integrals here are not natural numbers :P

@ACuriousMind :-D I imagined so...well, it works for cardinal and ordinal numbers as well
but again not the right setting I am afraid

3:54 PM
Your question started out as a perfectly good question about assumptions made in physics. It's a shame you had to move on to ectoplasm. — John Rennie 4 mins ago
JohnRennie captures my thoughts precisely
I seem to recall that this user like to post about ectoplasm. I needed a few hours to get the creepy images from their last link out of my mind

@ACuriousMind Go to /x/ on 4chan, you'll need more than a few hours :D

4:11 PM
How does I'm self-learning general relativity because it interests me sound as an answer to my uniqueness?

@KyleKanos I think I've read that in quite a few questions here :P

Hmm, but are you applying for this job?

@KyleKanos Maybe

Fortunately my wife is better at answering these type of ridiculous questions for me
Because I am extremely optimistic which enables me to persevere through struggles

4:26 PM
@KyleKanos I got a $20,000 scholarship and I put my participation on PSE as an activity.

@0celo7 You mean, hanging around chat and asking me about video games? ;)

@ACuriousMind That's a recent development.
I'm on a physics break now.

@0celo7 what is a physics break? a break from physics, or where you do nothing but physics?

@yuggib Break from physics, and academics in general.
I have summer college work that I have to do, though.
There's a book and an online course.

@0celo7 sounds boring...

4:38 PM
@0celo7 ...you are not even in college yet and you have work to do?
Or is the grouping there "summer college" and that's an institution in itself?

@ACuriousMind Yes.
@yuggib Yeah...it's a no credit graduation requirement.
@ACuriousMind No.

That sucks

@ACuriousMind Thank you for your condolences.

@0celo7 To UTenn was it? Or is this elsewhere?

4:44 PM
@ACuriousMind Do you have any feel for what the system requirements for Fallout 4 will be?
@KyleKanos I won't say which organization, but it was through the school.

@0celo7 Nope

@0celo7 The band?
Also:
33
Q: Is Physics SE on your CV?

Emilio PisantySo there's this careers course thing I'm going to this week as part of some graduate school requirement, and I've been asked to prepare a curriculum vitae for it. I'm probably going to include something like Active on Physics Stack Exchange (http://physics.stackexchange.com/users/8563/emil...

@KyleKanos o0
What band??

Oh, I misread that

@KyleKanos Please learn to read.

4:46 PM
@0celo7 I'm too busy

;)
@KyleKanos Processing borke data?

I had assumed you were implicitly saying it was UTenn but that you weren't saying which group was giving you the $20k scholarship.
Like you were embarrassed by them or something

No, I just don't want people knowing everything about me.
And it might be $25k if they extend it for my MS year.
@ACuriousMind I think I have the most expensive potato on the planet.

5:06 PM
@0celo7 Your thingy is far from a potato.

@ACuriousMind The GPU is somewhat lower than a GTX 660.

@0celo7 That's not a potato, I am using a GTX 660 and run most things fine on maximal settings.

@ACuriousMind I literally could not run TW3 on lowest settings at 1/5th my native res.

That's probably due to the fact that it's not a laptop built for gaming, and not the fault of the components.
In particular, your GPU is underclocked, as you already noticed

I could OC it...
I need some ice blocks.
I shall encase it in ice!

5:10 PM
@0celo7 And TW3 is one of the most demanding games there is. A "potato" would be something that struggles to run Oblivion on lowest settings, imo

@ACuriousMind Demanding because of bad programming. I think @JimsBond mentioned some games just don't run well.
I've heard, for instance, GTA5 looks better than GTA4 because it is simply a better coded port.

@0celo7 Yeah, it's probably not optimized very well. You must consider that their budget is far lower than that of a typical AAA game
And it is incredible how far it surpasses most games with far bigger budgets

I looked at the new Rainbow Six's expected specs...the minimum is a 670 D:
minimum

I think my iPad needs some ice blocks too :(

5:16 PM
Now I know why they came out with the "air."

@skillpatrol I don't do mobile gaming.

My phone is too small and runs out of battery too quickly and gaming on an iPad just looks silly.
@ACuriousMind A "potato" is something that can't run current things at any level.

Doing anything on my iPad looks cool :-)

I can't get 60fps in Oblivion on max settings :(
I found some shadow settings that ruin the fps
Turn on "grass shadows" and turn the "ext shadows" to max.
BOOM there goes the fps to like 20
Also "self shadows" in crowded areas is pretty bad.
@skillpatrol Your iPad looks like a big iPhone +
My iPad looks like a bigger iPhone +

5:22 PM
Really?
I didn't know that.

@skillpatrol Depends how blind you are.
I think the mini is 2 inches bigger than the 6+.
The Air 2 is maybe 3 inches bigger than the mini?

I didn't know

Not sure on those numbers.
6+: 5.5'' screen

Interesting.

mini: 7.9'' screen
Air II: 9.7'' screen

5:26 PM
Wow! Thanks for the info pal.

5:37 PM
9.7" is HUGE!

@skillpatrol That's what she said.
She being @KyleKanos mother.

@KyleKanos If that's for a job appliction, bad. You majored in physics and astrostuff, so saying essentially that that's what you'd still prefer to be doing is not a good way to go. As for optimistic etc, those will always need to be followed by concrete examples.

@KyleKanos Not very, since we're both doing that, actually. Makes you sound as unique as a toddler youngun on the internet!

Oh, the GR thing lasted as long as it took me to write that

5:48 PM
Hey, Apple has apps for 4 year olds
and younger.

Is Borderlands 1,2 any good?
@KyleKanos I had to get my daily fix in. I'm good now.

@alarge I literally had 140 characters for that, so not much I could expand on. :/ If they're honestly going to judge me on that question, I probably don't want to work there anyway

@KyleKanos Oooh, Saint's Row IV looks good.
So tonight I'll probably get that and a FF.
Mass Effect is Origin, so I can't use my Steam credit on that.
@KyleKanos Why do you recommend 7 and 8 over the others?
Do you like them the best, are they the best to start the series with,...?
