00:00 - 03:0003:00 - 00:00

12:00 AM
@ACuriousMind My first year class plan:

1st Semester: Honors Differential Equations, Honors Physics 1, Honors English, Intro to Computer Methods, Honors Seminar, Honors Linear Algebra (total: 15 hours)

2nd Semester: Honors Calculus III, Rhetoric and Writing, Honors Physics 2, Honors Topics in Natural Sciences, Inorganic Chemistry (total: 17 hours)

@0celo7 1. Is "honors" like "advanced"? 2. What's the seminar about? 3. Ew, chemistry. ;)

@ACuriousMind 1. Yes. 2. No clue, it's required for my honors diploma (:= shiny). 3. It's code for intro to physical and nuclear chemistry.

Looks nice, then, I guess. What kind of physics are the physics courses about?

@ACuriousMind Mechanics, sound, waves, fluids, basic thermo.
Standard intro physics.

I see, like Experimental Phyiscs 1 & 2 here, then.

12:08 AM
@ACuriousMind Properly speaking, it's honors engineering physics.

Highlight of the first semester is when they shoot a plushy tiger with a crossbow :D

It also has a programming component.
My sophomore math will be Honors Intro to Abstract Algebra and Honors Topology.
The engineering counselor will probably look at me weird. I don't know when I have to declare a math minor.

Bear with me here ;) Sophomore = 2nd year?

@ACuriousMind Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Super Senior

@0celo7 Do you have to talk to your counselors? Here, you only ever talk to them when you've got questions/problems.

12:11 AM
@ACuriousMind Mandatory meetings.

Ugh.

It's a new thing in the U.S.
The reason is because in the old days, you filled out a slip for your classes and put it in a box. My dad said some people had to go five years because no one told them they didn't select the necessary courses for graduation until it was too late.

@0celo7 lol, if that happens to you here, they just say you should've read the requirements more carefully :P

@ACuriousMind Back in the day, they said that too. I guess wealthy people complained.

It's considered part of growing up and being a self-sufficent human being, or something like that

12:14 AM
@ACuriousMind "Super Senior" is a joke for people who fail classes and go 5 years.
@ACuriousMind We did away with that over here.

@0celo7 Heh, I see

@ACuriousMind I'm debating if I should take analysis 1 and 2 or probability and stochastics for my Junior math.
Senior will be advanced ODEs and PDEs. Maybe geometry if I have the time. Probably not, since I have my senior thesis seminar.

@0celo7 I...don't like either of those, so don't listen to me ;)
I took the analysis courses here and they just really bored me (not because they were easy).
@0celo7 What kind of geometry would that be?

@ACuriousMind The Junior geometry class is classical differential geometry. I'll have to convince them to let me take graduate geometry, which is modern diffgeo.

I must admit I don't know the difference between "classical" and "modern" differential geometry.
I only know these terms applied to algebraic geometry :P

12:22 AM
@ACuriousMind Curves, surfaces vs. the diffgeo we usually discuss.

Ah, I see. That is pretty much as in the algebraic case
Curves and surfaces are boring.

@ACuriousMind I spend $10 on a Dover book on the subject. Never got past page 50.
I don't have the time to do all of these math courses and all the physics and the fusion stuff in grad school.
MATH 583 - Mathematical Evolutionary Theory
Interesting...

@0celo7 I think it's normal to not be able to take all the courses you'd like to
@0celo7 ...like modelling populations and gene spread quantitatively?

@ACuriousMind Selected topics.

lol, "selected topics" means the lecturer can do what ever the hell they want, right?

12:28 AM

Q: How would you review your experiences at Physics Stack Exchange?

PrathyushI am trying to get a holistic picture of the User's opinion on the site. Both positive and Negative reviews are welcome. Being a reasonably broad topic, I will pose some specific questions. Feel free to include in your answers other things that I may fail to mention. Ofcourse you don't have to an...

@ACuriousMind Pretty much.

user54412
I remember the summer before college, flipping through the course catalog and thinking "I'm gonna take all the courses"

MATH 649 - Seminar in Analysis
Sounds fun.
NE 671 - Advanced Topics in Applied Artificial Intelligence
I met the professor who teaches that!
@ChrisWhite I'm gonna take 25 hours each semester. I will take all of them!

user54412
What is a "normal" amount of hours? (we didn't use that system)

@ChrisWhite 15-17
I'm doing 15 my first semester, 17 my second, cf. above.

12:35 AM
Are these hours lecture hours or lectures + tutoring sessions?
That sounds weird. Why use hours when they don't mean hours?

They are lecture hours. (Confirmed with dad.)
There are then additional hours with the TA.

user54412
We had "units," which were ostensibly hours per week spent on lectures + recitations + lab + homework. This measure was sometimes off by an order of magnitude or so.

@ChrisWhite Yeah, we have those, too. They are either ridiculously low or ridiculously high.

I should finish chapter 4 in HE tonight. I'm afraid I'll hit another 3 hour proof though.

@0celo7 Hey, no erasing your past slip-ups! ;)

user54412
12:46 AM
Every time you abbreviate that way, I think you're using Biblical caps or something. "And then HE said, 'Let there be Light,' and there was Light."
3

@ACuriousMind The reason I said that is because I took a 5 hour calc class a couple years ago at my local community college and we only met for 3 hours a week.

I'm not sure HE treats electromagnetism.

@ACuriousMind Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr-Newman black holes :)

@0celo7 Sooo...the lecturer was being a slacker or what?

@ACuriousMind No, we got through more material than was required.
He was just fast I guess.

12:49 AM
But what about the two additional hours? Did he just have one less lecture than usual?

@ACuriousMind He just let us out early.
This was shitty, because at the time my father was my ride, and he refused to come earlier than the scheduled end of the lecture.

He was livid that he paid for 5 hours and got 3-4.

I've never had a lecturer take regularly less time than he needed to.
Some regularly just make no break in the middle and gain a quarter of an hour.
Only works if the lecturer is good, though. One prof tried that once and when people complained, he said "You can always walk out". About two thirds of the class (of 300) walked out, he never tried to do overtime again.

@ACuriousMind Do what if the class walked out? Just fail them.

1:03 AM
@0celo7 Presence isn't mandatory.

Call it "mandatory optional material".
@ACuriousMind Exactly.
If they walk out, they'll fail the test and quizzes.

Ah, I think the guy was far too lazy to pull that off
@0celo7 What...quizzes?

@ACuriousMind American colleges have quizzes. (Sometimes.)

Also, it was experimental physics 2 (thermo + electrodynamics), there's not much you can do that isn't found in a myriad other places.
@0celo7 Those do not exist. There's the homework, and if you pass a certain threshhold in that, you're admitted to the final exam, which is 100% of your grade.
(The quizzes do not exist here. American colleges obviously exist :D)

@ACuriousMind Forgive me for not knowing how German unis work.
I'll now commit seppuku by reading the next Lemma in HE.

1:08 AM
Probably a bad idea, but I bit into answering the latest Meta.Phys post :(

Proposition 4.5.10 seems trivial but the proof is a full page.
@ACuriousMind That proof was really dumb. I'm not sure what it accomplished. I have repented.

@0celo7 Yes, go read the next lemma
HE will grant you absolution.
@KyleKanos Why would that be a bad idea?

@ACuriousMind IDK, he's a PO troll?

@KyleKanos But...your answer is the "correct" answer. Answering a question should have nothing to do with the user asking it :P

The proof of Prop. 4.5.12 starts with: "The proof is a bit finicky". That's not something I want to hear from this book.

1:19 AM
@ACuriousMind Oh, forget Margaret Rosa already?

Ok, I skimmed the last proof.
Done with chapter 4.
One day I might return and work out that proof in detail, but that day is not today.
I'm now an expert on geodesics and Jacobi fields.

@KyleKanos Her meta questions also have answers, so I'm not sure what you want to tell me.

That star is dumb.

Even trolls get answers here - just not the ones they like :)

@ACuriousMind She also started trolling the comments...that's what I find the bad idea
@0celo7 I found it funny :)

1:24 AM
@KyleKanos Because I claimed to be an expert after 28 pages? If you read this book and worked out (almost all) of the proofs like I did, you'd think you're hot shit too.

@0celo7 I don't need to read books to think I'm hot shit. ;)

I just ask my wife, she tells me I'm hot shit

@ACuriousMind Chapter 5: Exact Solutions. Hopefully this one will be a bit chiller.

@0celo7 I'll await your report on that eagerly.

5.1 Minkowski Spacetime. How bad can this be? ::braces::
@ACuriousMind You forgot the equation.

1:28 AM
@0celo7 That's your and d20's thing, I don't sully equations by using them that way.

So you were being sarcastic.
I'm just trying to broaden your horizons.

Also, you might underestimate how much I actually look forward to hear you despair ;)

:<
From classmate doing black holes as his final project research presentation:

@0celo7 Dude, my horizons are like, you know, broad already.

Quick Question: Should I (a) have one beer tonight and the last tomorrow, (b) both beers tomorrow, or (c) finish the last two beers tonight?

1:31 AM
@KyleKanos Drink the two beers now and then go buy more beers later.

@KyleKanos Premise of the question is flawed, one never has just two beers at home.

@0celo7 I do have to go to the store tomorrow to get charcoal

@0celo7 Heh, bringing a black hole to "show and tell", or what's the plan here? :D

@KyleKanos Go today. It's only 9:30.

Yeah, but Xero Kynos is on...

1:32 AM
@ACuriousMind Before those quotes I thought you were under the impression American high school have show and tell :P

@0celo7 Nah, I don't think that.

@ACuriousMind I remember hating show and tell, but I can't remember why.

@KyleKanos What is Xero Kynos?

Final Fantasy 7 speed runner
He's in the middle of an All-Bosses run

lol, should've guessed that

1:34 AM
You really love those speed runs.
I love Pokemon speedruns.

I find watching others play games boring :P

@0celo7 ...unless it's HG/SS.

I haven't even enough time to play all the things I want to play, let alone watch others do it.

I am sorta not-watching
I flick back and forth between GR, this, & Kynos

@Icosahedron What's wrong with HGSS?

1:37 AM
Who is HGSS?
Or is it What is HGSS?

You have to beat two regions, 16 gym leaders, 2 elite fours.

@KyleKanos Pokemanz

Pokemon get up to level 90, battles take too long.

HeartGold and SoulSilver

@0celo7 That's what I was asking about

1:38 AM
@Icosahedron Werster does that in 3-4 hours.

The acronym
Lol...I would watch 8+ hour streams at work while typing my dissertation

Have any of you tried CaveStory yet?

3-4 hours was often too short for me

@KyleKanos Why?

@0celo7 You're just now going back to that? I thought it was funny. Seemed almost a humorous arrogance

@KyleKanos It's bothering me. I wasn't serious.
You thought I was serious?

I know, I took it as a joke
You were feigning it

@0celo7 Good only things I really am serious about get starred :P
@Icosahedron No, I spent the last week playing The Witcher 3.

Bishal doesn't understand why light cones are important for black holes.

It's amazing.

1:41 AM
This will be a disaster.

@0celo7 Ask about Interstellar? Might make it more interesting

@KyleKanos I'm not there all next week, so I can't help him in class.
I need a laundry list of stuff he should look up.

Well then tell him to watch the movie, it might help him or something

@0celo7 Tell him to read HE. $3x + 5$

@Icosahedron Good idea.

1:44 AM
Okay...who is HE?

@KyleKanos The Lord.

Usually one doesn't capitalize the e there...

@0celo7 and his enslaved grad student, right?

Hawking & Ellis

@0celo7 Ah. TY

1:45 AM
@KyleKanos It's a math book masquerading as a physics book masquerading as the vaguest piece of shit you'll ever not read.

I'll be sure to not read it then

Poor Bishal, he can't even join this chat.

@0celo7 You should really read QoGS, it's a physics book that says right out of the box you'll think it's a math book :D

@KyleKanos Time travel?

@Icosahedron Interesting...

1:48 AM
@ACuriousMind I don't know what QoGS is.

@ACuriousMind TBH, while that is on the list, it's pretty far down.
@ACuriousMind Don't tell him.
He'll want to use it as a QFT intro text.

@Icosahedron Quantization of Gauge Systems by Henneaux & Teitelboim, about the quantization of constrained Hamiltonian systems, of which the usual gauge theories are a special case.
@0celo7 I'm pretty sure you can't use that as a QFT text, it isn't even about QFT, really^^

@Icosahedron The prerequisites are simple calculus and advanced algebraic geometry.

I already changed my mind about Zee again.
I don't want to ever see his book again, I even deleted the pdf.
Using wald.

Carroll, god damnit!

1:53 AM
What in the world is a "custom sider- ski bypass"? This question needs serious cleanup from the original poster. — David Hammen 2 hours ago

@0celo7 No algebraic geometry, some heavy algebra, though

@ACuriousMind I guessed.
For penance, I will read some in HE.

@0celo7 I'm using h&t first, turok said it's more advanced than carroll, and it's a third of its length.
and I looked through it and it's not forbidding.

Don't you think you should get some more physics experience first?
Like read Shankar?

I am reading it.

1:56 AM
@Icosahedron "Turok": First thought: That Vulcan on Voyager...no, that was Tuvok. Second thought: That guy from the games about killing dinosaurs. Conclusion: No idea what you're talking about.

@ACuriousMind neil turok, that lame physicist at perimeter.

Going back to beer for a second: I (kinda sloppily) poured myself a glass last night at dinner (can to glass b/c I hate drinking from a can) & my 5 year old son said, Whoa, look at all that head! Kid is way awesome

I don't get why you're reading a book that's harder than a book that's harder than a book that's too hard for you.
I poured myself a glass of Bourbon and seem to have lost it.

user54412
@0celo7 I bet Einstein took it.

@KyleKanos head = foam? Also, do you usually buy beer in cans? ::shudder::

2:00 AM
@KyleKanos Why...

@ACuriousMind Head is indeed foam. I don't usually buy beer in cans, but it was a good price in cans vs bottles

@ACuriousMind My familiy has canned and bottled beer.

@0celo7 I'm okay with the -+++ signature, but the 4,1,2,3 bit is, um, odd...

Guinness in cans because of the nitrogen capsule.
@KyleKanos Oh, that's the right signature. I'm upset by the 4,1,2,3.

@0celo7 Okay, that I can understand (although I don't like Guiness).

2:03 AM
@ACuriousMind Damn German purist ;)
I bet you make people recite the Bavarian purity laws.

I like dark ales and lagers

I don't like "drinkable" beer.

@0celo7 Ah, no, I like some ales and stouts, just not Guinness
@0celo7 Does drinkable mean "tastes like water"? :P

@ACuriousMind Essentially.
@KyleKanos Do you like Sam Adams?

@0celo7 Some of theirs. I really dislike IPAs and they like making those

2:06 AM
@0celo7 I'm god.

@KyleKanos IPA?
I'm a drinking newbie. (Obviously.)

India Pale Ale

@0celo7 This has puzzled me for a while...isn't the drinking age in the USA 21? Or did I severely misunderstand something?

@ACuriousMind In VA, the drinking age is whatever your parents say when you're on your property.
I have a German/Czech/Slovak mother, so I've been pretty free since 16.
@KyleKanos Do they call it an IPA or is one of their named beers an IPA?

@0celo7 I see. Good influence ;)

2:09 AM
@0celo7 It's a style of beer

user54412
^Having essentially nothing to do with India

I can't drink, because my body cannot process alcohol, even though I'm god.

Well, the bourbon got poured out because it "looked like coffee".

@0celo7 What kind of bourbon was that?!

2:17 AM

...doesn't look that much like coffee. Was it in a mug?

White coffee cup.

@KyleKanos Oooooooold joke ;P
@0celo7 The only time whisky should be in a coffee cup is when you're drinking Irish coffee.

@ACuriousMind Bourbon is American whiskey, and you have no authority to tell me about it.
Fight me.

@0celo7 I'll take the next flight. Be there or be square.

2:21 AM
@ACuriousMind This will be a good ol' fashioned duel.
Sucks if you're a nogunz German.

ACuriousMind: ::lectures 0celo7 on group theory::

Guns or swords?

Revolvers.
Get it: my name is a reference to a certain revolver-wielding person.

@0celo7 Heh, yes, I remember

Revolver Ocelot?

2:24 AM
@KyleKanos Si

I don't speak French

@KyleKanos Oui

I speak American

Ja

@0celo7 Will I get through customs with one of those?

2:26 AM
@ACuriousMind I can lend you one...for a price.

I will not rely on a weapon you could've tempered with.

20 pounds of Döner, 20 pounds of Schnitzel, 20 pounds of assorted German pastries

You can't bring large quantities of food items on plane.

That's not my problem.

You can get a pistol anywhere
Just gotta know the right shady people

2:30 AM
@0celo7 But who's gonna eat that after I shot you?

@ACuriousMind Confident much?

@ACuriousMind Should that even be a question?

Have you ever fired a gun before?

@ACuriousMind Bring a panzerfaust.

@0celo7 Of course not, I come from a civilized country :P

2:33 AM
@Icosahedron DHS will probably kill him.

@Icosahedron I'll bring my flammenwerfer.

Firing pistols is The Great American Pasttime. It's no way uncivil

@KyleKanos It's important that you believe that.

Which bit, the pasttime or the uncivil?

@0celo7 What is DHS?
@KyleKanos The latter, the former is obviously objective ;)

2:36 AM
@ACuriousMind Schutzstaf...I mean Department of Homeland Security

Heh, I see.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure that guns aren't uncivil, people are.

@ACuriousMind Use HE against him, it's super effective.

@Icosahedron They won't let me bring a HE grenade through customs, either :(

Clever.

2:41 AM
The last comment is just mind-blowing

@Yohkura Bish?

hello

Everyone this is Bishal.
He's fucked and needs our help.

this is true

Black holes aren't real, Hawking said so

2:43 AM
Will I get an A if I say that?

No clue, I'm not your teacher

How long does the presentation need to be?

But what about BH's are you planning on discussing?

35 min.

@KyleKanos ...what?

2:45 AM
He's another internet troll: imgur.com/gallery/ZAUxy
Hysterical
I'm probably laughing too hard

1. Light cones
2. general concept of black hole
3. Schwarschild radius
4. Hawking radiation
5. No Hair theorem
6. Chart of the different types of stable black holes

@Yohkura Holy...you want to go from the concept of black holes to hawking radiation in 35 mins?

yes
but is that not possible?

You can't talk about Hawking radiation without pair production in QFT.
I'm also not sure the class knows anything about radiation.

which is why its perfect for me to talk about it

2:49 AM
Because no one will ask questions?

exactly.

Too bad I'll be at UTK. I could ask some fun questions.

@0celo7 I mean...I'm having "QFT in curved spacetime" this semester and the eighth talk is about Hawking radiation because it needs QFT regardless of your approach.

@0celo7 thank god

@ACuriousMind Remember this is a high school talk.

2:51 AM
@0celo7 Which is what I'm trying to wrap my head around.
Is it meant to be pop-sci level?

@ACuriousMind Perhaps.
I don't have to do it because I have an A for the year.

I have to do it. Because i had a D for the year

I see. Well, on that level, you can probably say whatever you want and just hide behind "It's more complicated, actually" when there are questions :P

@Yohkura Just refer the class to Hawking & Ellis and Wald if they have questions ;)

That was the plan. But I can't do that the whole time.
So I need to demonstrate the physics of a black hole. Any ideas?

2:57 AM
Perhaps this wasn't the best topic considering there has to be a demonstration part.

Again: Interstellar

@KyleKanos Not gonna lie. I had this idea to put a clip of the film lol

As long as it covered the graphics of the BHs great
If it manages to catch any of the story, cut it out
