Not watching it. PVs didn't do anything to significantly distinguish it from any other generic mecha series.

@ton.yeung haven't seen the latest ep but so far it gave me no reason to drop it yet

3:18 AM
@ton.yeung tashika ni ne, sono mc omoshirokunai. Maybe slow dev, at least up to last ep it seemed his expression changed, but I was not expecting much from that anime anyway
Well zankyou does look nice and gives a mystery/detective feel

Why would you expect a bunch of Japanese people would care about getting English right?
That would be like assuming people here can speak Japanese remotely correctly

sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Who are you polishing it for?

If 95% of their market is Japanese people, it's simply not worth hiring a translation checker and a separate voice actor to voice those lines.
@ton.yeung Anime is made first and foremost to make money
Sure, they can ask whoever is the most knowledgeable guy on the production team about English
which is what they typically do IIRC
Criticizing anime for bad English is like criticizing IEEE standard for bad math. It's true but irrelevant for most of the people they're targeting.
@ton.yeung Maybe for you, but not for the average viewer

3:47 AM
@ton.yeung haven't seen last ep yet but will when I get home
-_- it makes me want to get home faster which makes my work boring and makes the time go by slower and slower
@ton.yeung shhhh don't make it worst
I am a Network Eng and work on a Brazilian IDC

IDC may refer to: == Businesses and organizations == Industrial Development Corporation, also known as Castle Grande, an Arkansas company involved in the Whitewater political controversy Interactive Data Corporation (NYSE symbol IDC), a financial services company International Data Corporation, a market research company InterDigital Communications, a telecommunications company Interdnestrcom, a mobile telephone broadband provider in Transnistria, Moldova International Detention Coalition, a non-government organization (NGO) advocating for human rights International Development Collaborative, a...

Internet datacenter
:P
true specially when a smart ass make some mess and as a result the entire network gets DDoS and we have to mitigate and null route
it usually is around 8pm~3am
when I am on night shift I am not always on night shift
during the day you hardly see those
we've pin point some time ago that most DDoS happening were related to kids that were involved on some network called GArena
like there was a I think Iranian group on that network
and if you pissed them they would DDoS your ip from their botnet
mmm GArena was/is not sure if still exists a gaming plataform
but we haven't had any issues with them since we started notifying congent, level3, and others
looks like it still exists
it was a pretty old thing
oh no the network itself is fine
think of it as a IRC network
there are separated rooms, channels and games

4:04 AM
@user1306322 No, we don't have many people here who know about this stuff, but we aren't going to get more if we start closing these questions. — Logan M 23 mins ago
@LoganM isn't it not just about what we want but also what can realistically be expected to be asnwered?

@user1306322 no, it's about whether it's in our scope or not
That's it

@ton.yeung lol which also remembers me of IRC botnets

we could keep all anime production questions open but I don't think anyone would be competent enough to give a proper answer

We might as well close questions about any series that doesn't have 100k users on MAL then as well

actually whatever
if I knew an answer to a closed question I would post it as a comment
like I usually do

4:07 AM
@LoganM why do you always try to generalize something completely out of the current discussed boundaries lol

@Prix Reductio ad absurdum

@Prix I'm not sure about anything except that Logan's opinion about SE can be trusted more often than not

Standard argumentation strategy which has existed since Aristotle

why not just use one with in the target ;)

too bothersome to explain the difference in small things than in the large ones

4:10 AM
But in all honesty, who are you (or I) to say what we are or are not likely to be able to answer? I've been surprised by questions before that I didn't think were answerable but turned out to have a great answer somewhere that wasn't easily accessible.
@Taisho nooo why you leave us?!

yes, yes, I myself usually prefer to keep questions open precisely because of the possibility that a competent user might appear

@LoganM That's something agreeable

he's on refresh

#potato?

#potato!

4:11 AM
when he starts doing the "sssssssss" he needs to be restarted

why he does ssssss

what is ssssssss anyway

is he infested with snakes?
SSSssSSSSSsssS

#sssssssssssssss
^ Try speaking to him in his own language

@ton.yeung mmmmmm pix or it never happened

4:12 AM

what happens when he does ssss memory or something?

@Prix Could you rephrase your request?

@user1306322 he does that because something specifically happening I assume

he's working on autoit as I've already mentioned about a million times

Does he queue all previous posts or just one of them?

4:14 AM
I'm saving the page with ctrl+s
as many as he can find starting from the last processed messageid

@user1306322 yes, but shouldn't need to reboot unless its like eat all memory or doing something wrong or so I assume

chat page usually keeps the latest 100 messages so for example if he went down 101 messages ago and was started again, he'd see that there are 100 unprocessed messages and would try to process them all

So anything above that would just get dumped
But he still hasn't replied to either of my messages

@Prix I have no idea what the fuck goes wrong all the time so I just set autoit to automatically restart everything if latency gets too high
@LoganM because I cleared the reply queue manually before he could do that

oic

4:17 AM
if you want to send me a copy, I can put it working with the library for u next weekend

Shouldn't he have posted by now, or does he default to wallpaper mode disabled?

once I get enough sleep and am capable of implementing that chat interface Prix has kindly mashed up for me, this will all be history

I don't think you would want him answering all the 100 messages at once @LoganM

#wallpaper status

#post

4:17 AM
Wallpaper module status: Enabled, time interval: 15 min., message interval: 50. Links unposted: 934, links posted: 476, Total: 1410. Next wallpaper post is due in 31 message.

ka-kawaiii

he thinks that any image posted by him is "the image"
I couldn't reliably program that so I just resorted to this

you mean from previous commands?

he doesn't have a memory of which messages he posts automatically?

that's what I understood

4:20 AM
he's supposed to remember what he does, but it's a bit more complicated with parsing chat page saved as text than with json messages, so I just decided to leave it for the future

but like all the previous commands would count as that one

That one wasn't from a command, it was posted manually (afaict)

the check for posted images is own messages starting with <user image>
all onebox image posts qualify

so you don't take into account the message id?

I couldn't code it correctly in a reliable way with the message ids

4:22 AM
like user image against message id from #post or something

in text, the code of the messages varies slightly, but that's enough for parsing to go wrong

If you're keeping a list of urls he's already posted, can't you check that for the most recent one?

when Logan uploaded a bunch of images using the "https" link instead of "http" I had to edit half of the parsing class to make it work
parsing that text is bullshit

http should work just as well IIRC

I want everything to work correctly irregardless of user input

4:25 AM
JSON is cake you make a class and deserialize into it
you probably take like an hour or so to put the library working on your current project

I like cake

me too

we should eat cake

schedule a cake eating meeting on the weekend
everybody gathers here to eat cake and report their progress

too late

4:27 AM
too creamy, but qualifies
memochou got interesting but Alice doesn't strike me as cute enough character on her own
I feel like the makers tried to mix genres but it didn't work very well

It was kinda meh

it's a detective, but with a bit of comedy and moe…
still got 4 episodes left
but it's definitely better than Ika Musume or Free
degesssooooo~

Free yes, Ika Musume no

I'll just put it on the back shelf and try other stuff

It's one of the more forgettable shows I've seen. Didn't do a very good job of convincing me to like it.

4:34 AM
Aoi Bungaku seems interesting

Ika Musume didn't have that problem.
Aoi Bungaku is really depressing.

I love depressing

hard to watch

challenging

Have you read any of the novels it's based on?

4:34 AM
nope

They're worth reading if you like reading

there isn't any literature that can't be successfully portrayed on the screen

aru mikan no ue ni arumi kan no ue ni aru… mikan!
also reading takes a lot more time than watching and animation usually has additional benefits
like voice acting for example

I'm fairly sure there's no video version of most of those novels which is as good as the originals.

4:39 AM
one day when I'm through all anime and movies worth watching I'll turn my eyes to the non-animated works

@Mysticial YouTube is down. Fix.

Don't care. I'm playing AOE.
:)

@Mysticial But you're a highly trained monkey. YouTube said it was dispatching highly trained monkeys.

I'm not highly trained. So no.

Waitwut

@Mysticial area of effect?

5:48 AM
@Eric Working for me

@LoganM Yeah it's actually just the video editing pages that are borked.

@user1306322 Age of Empires

online?

@Mysticial Apples or Elephants.

no
just single player

5:49 AM
Isn't AoE like 20 years old?

Yeah.

Nice.

It's been rereleased on Steam in HD.

there's an AoE Online now
oh that one, it's great
and I'm sitting here like

In case you guys are interested, area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/72987/stack-overflow-academy had a guy go in and comment on basically every highly rated question why it's terrible and made a meta post.
I commented on his meta post because sometimes it's fun to engage this kind of borderline troll/idiot

5:51 AM
I will upvote these comments

Mine or his?

both

sure go ahead I don't care
lol

u just said u like stirring up trubble

I'm actually happier if the proposal goes down in flames
not that I really care either way
Just prefer chaos and destruction over progress and order.

5:53 AM
the best stuff survives chaos and destruction

I don't think a single ineffective troll will bring down that proposal though.
What will bring it down is the fact that it's a doomed idea from the start

it'll fall apart on its own once the closed beta starts

The problem is that the people who are failing to use SO successfully can't be helped in the Q&A format at all because they don't know enough to make a reasonable question.

This guy might be exhibiting troll-like behavior, but he's bang-on.
All of this stuff is either already covered, or a user won't know how to ask it.

5:56 AM
@Eric yes I actually agree with what he's saying

This is like writing a textbook for dyslexic people.

Of course, the solution is just to not frame it in the Q&A format in the first place. This is exactly the sort of thing that internet fora are actually good for. But good luck convincing anyone employed by SE that they should add a forum to the network.

after reading the example questions, it's basically MSO

@user1306322 I agree.

@user1306322 yes it's like MSO except with lower standards

5:58 AM
hmm…
Lower Standards Overflow… LSO

Q: Boundary between Stack Overflow Academy and Meta Stack Overflow?

gerritProposal: Stack Overflow Academy Where is the boundary between Stack Overflow Academy and Meta Stack Overflow? Isn't the former more or less a subset (and therefore duplicate) of the latter?

@user1306322 LosersOverflow

That's one of the first things ppl pointed out about the proposal

@Mysticial Oh good lord it's overflowing with losers

Anyway I think it's doomed whether or not it makes it to beta

6:00 AM
Ugh, fat fingers
@LoganM Indeed, it wouldn't make it through closed beta

So the only consequence is that shog will get a ton of rep from it

@Mysticial yolo yolo yolo

which is irrelevant anyway since he has a diamond on a51

this only indicates that SO needs to divide their content into "expert/professional" and "enthusiast/beginner" groups

No, SO just needs to stop allowing questions

6:01 AM
why not just autoclose them on posting?

ExpertSexChange
LoserSexCHange

@user1306322 I think should just be auto-closed.

"Proposed Q&A site for programmers who want to learn how to ask good questions on Stack Overflow" they are going to teach people how to properly use English too?

They've answered everything at this point. No point to letting people ask things anymore. Instead open a new site for finding existing answers on SO

If it's a good question, it can be reopened.
@Prix LOLno

6:02 AM
lol

@Eric Proper English is IIRC actually the strongest predictor of question quality out of everything SE has looked at.

> Stack Overflow is a question and answer site for professional programmers.
and
> Stack Underflow is a question and answer site for beginner programmers.

lol

How about just redirecting beginners to Yahoo answers

@LoganM you are evil

6:04 AM
@user1306322 except the beginners would still not use it

no need to make a new site for them
@user1306322 what's new?

lol nuthin

@Prix Which is why the "closed by default" option is better than splitting the site.
Though they kinda are heading in that direction with the whole "deemphasize crap" thing.

You could make opening initially closed questions easier. Just require 1 or 2 votes or something.

If it actually works (which it probably won't on the first try), you basically hellban all new users who can't ask a good question.
@LoganM Exactly.

6:06 AM
I don't think they're going all the way to hellbanning

@LoganM I didn't mean it literally, just that bad questions get ignored and fall off so quickly that it's "as-if" it's a hellban.
You can even drop them from searches unless the user clicks the "show shit questions" checkbox.

Honestly as an outsider it seems to me like the biggest problem is all the duplicates. SO seems to have already answered the vast majority of all questions anyone but a fairly advanced programmer would have.

@LoganM I'm actually in favor of auto-deleting duplicates as well. Currently, they're exempt from the auto-deletion.

At that point, the added value of the average incoming question is negative, and you might as well just not allow new questions at all.
Sure, there are more subtle things you can do which will be better
but SE seems to think they can fix it just by shifting views around, which I'm fairly sure won't solve anything

6:11 AM
Auto-close all questions be default. One upvote or one "reopen" vote will open it up.

Problem with that is that if it's just one upvote it will lead to enormous amounts of sockpuppetry

At the same time, you don't want to kill the low-traffic tags where the only expert (who may not have 3k) wants to answer it.

make users liable of upvoting low quality posts

So the idea is that you can still upvote and answer.
It obviously doesn't solve the whole problem, but it should nibble away at it.

if they upvote bad posts too much, take the voting privilege from them because they obviously don't know what they're doing withit

6:13 AM
At some point it becomes prohibitively hard to sockpuppet your question open just to have it closed more than once or twice without getting caught. Presumably SE will aim for that if they do something like this.

@LoganM And it'll be trivially automate-able if it's from the same IP.

I guess you could allow people to post answers while the question is "closed" and hide them until it gets opened.

There's probably few people competent enough to use multiple IPs that it can be taken care of manually by mods.

If they're capable enough to do that and do it well enough to not be caught, they can probably ask a decent question

@LoganM Unless they're intentionally trolling. Like the Python guy.

6:15 AM
In which case that would be far easier than sockpuppetry anyway
@Mysticial Intentional trolls are a different matter entirely from help vampires imo

Actually, closing by default doesn't solve the problem of, "too many shit questions to sift through". Since you see them regardless of whether they are closed.
And you can't hide close questions because then it's impossible to get opened.
So the only way really is to AI filter them (which is what they're doing now).

I think you could put them in a separate zone

Another option is to:
1. Lower the close threshold to 1 or 2 votes.
2. Hide closed question by default, but anyone can opt into seeing them.

Answerers would still have reason to go there to look for new good questions to answer.

@LoganM That had been suggested and Shog wanted to put that option behind a rep paywall.

6:27 AM
of course, they'd still have to sift through everything, but the bad stuff at least wouldn't generate rep.

I'm not convinced that the repwhore problem needs to be attacked directly like that.
If you simply kill the visibility for bad questions, no one will see them, and the answers will get less rep.

Even if all you get is an accept, that's still 15 rep.
and yes, some people are obsessed enough to care about that much

Which is a lot less than 65 for a typical 5 + accept FGITW.
If they want it that much, let them have it. The whole point is to not bother the "normal" users.

@Mysticial sounds like a good idea

Q: About the industry: How much does it cost to license a manga outside of Japan?

GingiToday I'd like to know what kind of proposition one has to make to a Japanese publisher to have a go at distributing a title in a certain country (outside of Japan). This article told me how things work in the industry and I pretty much understand that to get a deal, you need sales forecasts, a ...

I decided to take back my close vote on that

6:48 AM
Haven't seen Jugem bug out recently. Not sure if that's because they fixed the feed or it just hasn't happened.
Either way, the next time he does we're in for a treat

7:09 AM
Macross is best watched from start to finish, not jumping in midway.
But Frontier isn't a terrible place to start
The american version of the original is not Macross
you could have just asked a question
whatever you want i guess

Yeah it seems that !!user is still bugged
fetches SO profiles
but it looks at your chat SE user #
so it will basically never get the right answer
not a big deal imo
We don't use that one much anyway
