Unless we get enough critical mass of users and questions to the site, it will be closed.
The bookmark starts here.

As for recruitment, I'm tempted to see what happens if we dump a reddit link to the eating pokemon question.
2

@Mysticial lol

@Mysticial That question is a winner
I second that notion

Why did I pick that one?

I don't think this is just a question of where to recruit. We also need to work on our site so that people will actually stay.

10:01 PM
Because everybody has heard of pokemon and at least seen some of it.

Yeah, I tried to get converts by linking the eating pokemon one on my facebook

Isn't as big as proggit.

@Mysticial so we should get more mainstream questions?

Even if we do that, there are going to be lots of people who see 25% Naruto questions, don't know they can hide them, and just leave.

When I hit front page on Proggit, I bring in about 30 - 40k views in 24 hours. (I've done this about 5 times.)

10:02 PM
The site is a bit sad looking since I block Naruto and Bleach, I get half greyed out pages

Speaking on the behalf of @HashiramaSenju, whose English is more broken than my body after our battle, I propose the following

reddit.com/r/pokemon is also an option for that one

So I suspect that on Anime, we'll only get a fraction of that if it hits #1.
@LoganM Holy shit, that subreddit is bigger than Anime.

The vast majority of the anime/mange community comes from pirate sites such as anime crazy or mangastream

@Mysticial yup

10:03 PM
@LoganM On the other hand, we want to target more than just the pokemon community.

Advertising there, but placing a banner or discussing it in their forums or chat could be a good start.

@MadaraUchiha There's a pretty sizable amount of people who just use fansub group sites, but most of them don't take kindly to posting advertisements

@LoganM I see newegg ads for hard drives on MAL.
I actually click on them.
It's pretty appropriate if you ask me, since people who use MAL usually - well - download their Anime.
If we make a banner with some really attractive title...
such as the eating pokemon question.
It might actually work.

I have a friend who is the head of [sage], and I might be able to convince her to post about us if we can manage to get at least a bit better-looking in terms of the distribution of questions.

@LoganM We definitely need more weight on non-naruto questions.

10:06 PM
But she isn't going to advertise a site that is mostly shounen, because that's not what her group does most of the time.

I mean like...
Madoka is one of the most popular recent shows.
And how many questions do we have on it?

I was thinking about IRC as well

@Mysticial 3, which is not bad comparatively.

If we do post on others sites, Pokemon eating aside, what would be out pitch?

@LoganM Compared to 72 for Naruto...

10:08 PM
freenode has some pretty serious anime chat channels as well

I mean, we have 0 questions about Shana, Toradora, Bakemonogatari, etc.

##anime and ##reddit-anime

@LoganM All of which I've seen...

They have a lot of users there and most of them are serious

@Mysticial I would ask questions if I had any, but it's usually harder for these kinds of shows.
Monogatari might be an exception, but I haven't thought about it.

10:09 PM
@LoganM yeah, it's hard to ask specific questions about those shows.
I can't even think of one for Shana.

Let's keep it on topic please.

@MadaraUchiha Well, part of the problem right now is that we don't have enough diversity.

do you think we have exhausted the potential new users coming from inside the SE network?

@Mysticial And that happens because we don't have many users

@MadaraUchiha I agree here

10:11 PM
Quick question: Does anyone know the proportion of people who watch subs vs. dubs?

Any notions about my IRC idea?

@MadaraUchiha In my anime club, it was like 70% preferred subs. But we might not be representative.

@Mysticial no clue

Sorry that one was for @Mysticial

@MadaraUchiha I don't use IRC, so I'm not sure

10:12 PM
@LoganM Same. That's the group that's currently being under-represented.
@JNat reddit.com/r/anime seems to be the group that we need more of.
The problem is that pokemon doesn't appeal to them that well.

It's the whole Type A vs Type B fans

What we need is a question that falls well into our group. We need it to be answered spectacularly well.

@Mysticial The eating Pokemon question will get their attention

Then we can put it on r/anime
@MadaraUchiha It will, but I think we can do even better.
Or rather, we do both.

10:14 PM
@LoganM yes, the second one is very good

@LoganM I like the Clannad one.
The top post on r/anime right now is in fact - Clannad.

Everyone loves Clannad
(well, maybe not everyone)

I personally want to ask a question about how they did the dub for this anime but I'm not sure how to word it

So we have two candidates for reddit/r/anime

The Pokemon one, and the Clannad one.

10:15 PM
The pokemon one can be X-posted on r/pokemon

Getting strong question on the top pages of Google is also important

@MadaraUchiha The Clannad one is something that has the potential to bring in google traffic.

Posting links on Reddit is a good way to promote them, especially if they succeed there.

The pokemon one I think will only be good for a one-time reddit link. I don't see the potential for long-term SE traffic.

@MadaraUchiha How many people does it take to succeed on Reddit? Could we by ourselves push this to the front page?

10:19 PM
@LoganM It depends on the subreddit.

@LoganM It also depends on how you word the link submission

I'm only familiar with r/programming since I've been on there 6 times. (my top 6 answers on Stackoverflow).
@Krazer On the smaller sub-reddits, it only takes a few votes to get onto the front page.
Whether it stays there becomes a matter of the quality of the link.
And of course the wording of the title.

Are there any other anime communities that we haven't touched upon yet?

@Krazer There are the various forums

Animesuki has a pretty good following due to it's tracker

10:21 PM
But most of them don't like adverts too.

and then there's 4chan....

@Krazer Most colleges have anime clubs, at least in the US.

As well as most of the fansub groups.

What about other non-anime communities like Bakatsuki or manga communities like Batoto or Mangafox?

@Krazer I know a few people who go on /a/ regularly, and they actually would probably like this site. But we can't really promote there easily because almost all external links get downvoted to oblivion.
Not actually downvoted, but no one posts anything so they die in a few minutes

10:25 PM
I think 4chan is a solid lead.

@Krazer :7904742 A lot of these sites have policies against posting advertisements, which they interpret pretty strictly. Not that having our posts deleted actually hurts anything, but it may not be worth the effort.

We get a lot of traffic from there already (second only to stackoverflow.com). There may be potential

@MadaraUchiha At the same time, we might get trolled into oblivion.
@MadaraUchiha Are there mod-tools that show that?
I wouldn't know how to get that info.

Though we're not quite sure where these referrals are coming from

@Mysticial We've already had a couple of troll posts, and there was no harm done in the long run.

10:27 PM
@LoganM Well, we don't want to create a bad impression among the 4chan community.

@Mysticial It's a mod tool, but since it's not super sensitive, and it's relevant to the discussion, I feel like posting it here is constructive.

@Mysticial If we were posting on 4chan, we wouldn't post it like an advertisement. We'd post it like "Hey look at this cool explanation I found for something I didn't understand" or some such nonsense.

Anyway
4chan is a double edged sword, it's risky, but it might be worth it

I think sticking to reddit is better for now, but /a/ is way bigger than /r/anime, so we should keep that in mind.

@LoganM I agree
We should keep 4chan at bay for now

10:31 PM
Agreed.
Now the question is: when do we start?

here's a summary of the thread about anime.SE from 4ch:

I don't actually have a reddit account.

@Mysticial I say we just start.

@Mysticial same

10:32 PM
So I can't really just make an account and dump a link without risk of getting banned.

I think if we start now it will be counterproductive. We need to seed the site with questions from other series before we can bring type b anime fans in

@LoganM That's what I'm thinking too.

@Mysticial I do.

@LoganM Alright

@LoganM Then we should make a list of the shows that appeal to our group that we need more of.
You're already listed 3. I can add a few more.
We might have to go ahead an ask some questions ourselves.

10:33 PM
@Krazer That thread is actually really funny

Even if they don't get answered, it might attract people from r/anime to answer it.

@Mysticial maybe we should all try to keep questions unanswered for a bit longer, instead of answering right away

@LoganM how many of those were posted by us?

that may attract new users: "hey, I can answer that"

@JNat I don't think that's gonna be a problem right now. I'm not particularly knowledgeable even in the shows that I watch.

10:35 PM
@JNat I thought of that, and I think it's a good idea.

And the questions that I've asked are mostly unanswered.

Also, we shouldn't be too fast in accepting as well

I dunno how well answered the Naruto questions are.

new users may think they have a better answer too, register, answer and stick around

@Krazer Then whenever you feel like it, I'd say dump a link to the Clannad question on r/anime
We'll save the pokemon one for later.

10:36 PM
@Mysticial Naruto is like 100% answered. I don't know if the answers are any good, though.

Alright
I think we have a conclusion

yeah

We require a list of 5-10 shows which will appeal to a group of higher level people.

@MadaraUchiha I wouldn't say "higher-level". But the group that Logan and I are in.

Those shows will need some seed questions. Some of which will inevitably remain unanswered.
After we have a reasonable amount of seed questions in place.
We can place links over on Reddit, IRC and perhaps even 4chan.

10:42 PM
@MadaraUchiha Yes, I believe that having some unanswered questions is important

@Krazer Alright, so don't link anything on reddit yet until you get the ok from us.

In addition, making sure our question titles and texts are seeded with proper keywords is critical
When you ask a seed question, make sure to think "How would I search on Google to find this piece of information?"

@Mysticial Okay

@Krazer Before you submit anything to reddit, run the submission title by me. I have a good sense for what will work and what won't.

This concludes the session on member recruitment.

10:43 PM
Bookmark it if you want.

We'll track the progress of it over the next few weeks

Ok... @LoganM You gonna stick around any longer?
I'm putting together a list right now?

I will issue a featured meta post summarizing the discussion of both sessions.

@MadaraUchiha Make a question titled: "What is a "list" question? What kinds "list" questions are allowed?"
I'll answer it.

@Mysticial I was thinking of using the link title: "Finally the ending of Clannad After Story starts to make sense!"

10:45 PM
Okay, I went through the top 50 most watched anime on MAL. Here are the ones that we have no questions about: Clannad, Toradora, Ouran HSHC, K-On, Bakemonogatari, Kuroshitsuji, Vampire Knight, Howl's Moving Castle, Blue Exorcist, Claymore, FLCL, Princess Mononoke, Zero no Tsukaima, Baccano, 5 cm per second.

@Mysticial lol I just put together a list but keep making yours as well

@LoganM I'm pulling the better shows from my MAL list.

@LoganM Maybe we should look for commonly asked but not adequately answered questions... I know the Clannad After Story is a commonly asked one

Angel Beats!
Accel World
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu
Black Lagoon
Fractale
Ga-Rei Zero
Guilty Crown
Gunslingher Girl
Hanasaku Iroha
Hyouka
Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai
K-On!
Kannagi
Macross Frontier
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha
Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
Tari Tari
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
The iDOLM@STER
Tiger & Bunny
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun
Toaru Majutsu no Index
Zero no Tsukaima

10:48 PM
@Krazer That's definitely a good idea. Unfortunately I don't know of any off the top of my head.

@Krazer I've been doing that lately.
Well. Here's a question I want to ask, but I don't know if it will be constructive:
"Why is Phryne's hair purple in the Manga, but brown in the Anime?"

That list definitely looks like what we should be aiming for. I can guarantee I can answer absolutely anything about The iDOLM@STER (to the best of my knowledge, I've read every word in all of the games). The other ones are almost all things I've seen also. I'm struggling to think of any actual questions about them that aren't just trivia, though.

@LoganM You and I have the same tastes. :P
"How is Misaka's Railgun so destructive?" - blah blah, in other words, that single coin going at X velocity can't possibly up-end a swimming pool. Where does the energy come from? Or is this just another case of Anime physics?
^^ Is that constructive?
I can think of a lot of questions like that. But I have no idea whether they will be constructive.
Any thoughts?

@LoganM What are the petit animals that resemble the main cast in the IM@S spinoff Puchimas?

Originally I thought that was a terrible way to ask a question, but then this question happened: anime.stackexchange.com/questions/630/…

10:54 PM
@Mysticial What are the major factions on the Magic and Science side and what are their purposes?

so now I'm not sure

Well... did we decide on these question that require speculative answers?
I can ask a shit-ton of them.

@Krazer Are you asking me that or proposing to ask it on the site?

@LoganM both, actually

Oh screw it. I'll ask that Fractale hair color and railgun questions anyway. If they get closed, they get closed. I don't think the question ban is enabled for sites like this.

Q: January 30th Brainstorming Session Results

Madara UchihaIn this session, we've discussed: The status of "list" questions. The site's member recruitment model. We've come to the following conclusions: The status of "list" questions A list question will generally be allowed, if it qualifies all 4 criteria below: It is specific and to the point. ...

2

@Krazer I think that's actually a good question for the main site. I'd have to go skim the manga to check what is actually known about them, at least beyond what's on project-imas.com/wiki/Puchimasu! and their individual traits, so I can't answer right away.

@MadaraUchiha oh cool, I don't even need to make an answer.
@MadaraUchiha I'll post an answer for how to deal with list questions that don't satisfy the 4 categories.

@Mysticial if you do as the index question, what would you call the tag? the full titles seems to be too long

@Krazer Is the full Japanese name too long?
Looks ok to me.

@Mysticial me too

11:09 PM
@Mysticial but do we really want to be using the japanese names on an english site?
It has been localized after all

maybe make a synonym for just , so that it's easier to type.
we have even though that isn't the full name

@Krazer There was a meta post about it.
The decision was inconclusive.

@LoganM Only if won't mean anything else

I'd say leave as now. If it becomes problematic later, you guy have the power to change it or synomize it.

There's no problem with using a shorter name if it's perfectly clear that is the series the question is about.

11:11 PM
@MadaraUchiha This isn't physics.SE, so I don't think we'd get other railgun questions

@LoganM In that case, sure

Pretty much everyone abbreviates it railgun, so I don't think it's ambiguous

I'll ask the Fractale question first

The next session is scheduled for 2 days from now, same time
It'll probably be a shorter one, describing what was done since this session, and discussing the other locked question.
If anyone has trouble with the time, let me know
I'll be off now, feel free to ping me, I'll see it tomorrow.
Night

What should I do about the Clannad /r/anime link submission?

11:20 PM
@Krazer Hold off on it for now.
I'll call the shots.

@Mysticial Yes m'lord.

@Krazer lol

@Krazer lol

Q: January 30th Brainstorming Session Results

Madara UchihaThe following is a summery of the brainstorming sessions made in chat on January 30th, 2013. You can read the bookmarked discussion here In this session, we've discussed: The status of "list" questions. The site's member recruitment model. We've come to the following conclusions: The status...

@MadaraUchiha I can't make 2100 on Fridays. I have class roughly until 2300, and probably dinner plans after that. I'm actually only free from 1600 to 1800 on Friday, and even that's going to be tight.
Weekends are fine for me though. Or you can meet without me.
