9:02 PM
hello to all :)

@cmhughes Hello Chris! :)

@PauloCereda hey Paulo, how's your day going? :)

@Herbert You're a Libertine expert: did you see this one? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/110354/…

the side-by-side WYSIWYG question continues to live dangerously on the 4/5 close votes boundary

@cmhughes In a hurry. :) I need to run an experiment 5k times. :)

9:12 PM
@PauloCereda good luck Paulo!

@cmhughes Thanks. :) It's a good excuse for procrastinating: "my experiment is running."
:)

@PauloCereda :)

With @MarcoDaniel's addition of tcolorbox, does it sound feasible to suggest a merge of answers/posts between the following two questions?

Q: Any way to show LaTeX example code *and* execute it?

alexisIn (La)TeX documentation and tutorials, it is common to show a snippet of code next to the output it generates. It might be two minipages side by side, or a code listing followed by boxed output, or whatever. For a trivial example, we might see \[ sin \theta \] next to its output, sin θ Wheneve...

Q: Side-by-side source and output when documenting a style file

Niel de BeaudrapWhen documenting a style file, it would be nice to be able to easily put side by side different examples of code, side-by-side with the output they produce. What recommendations to people have to do this efficiently, and æsthetically?

@percusse I have put up the question for smartdiagram on the site tex.stackexchange.com/questions/110372/…

@gekkostate verify with the filelist link

9:28 PM
@gekkostate I believe that four files that are in the doc subtree should be moved to the tex subtree. You find my comment to the question.

@egreg Yes, I'm looking at that right now. I'm going to move the files around and see what happens

@gekkostate @egreg Ah I came just about to say the same thing :)

@egreg is this a problem in texlive 2012 it works fine for me ?

@cmhughes and lots of humour impaired vim users are agreeing with the negative comment on my answer:(

@egreg This is interesting. I do not have those files in doc and the only thing I have in tex is smartdiagram.sty

9:31 PM
@texenthusiast It used to be a problem in TeX Live, but the files have been moved to the correct location three weeks ago, so whoever has an up-to-date TeX Live has no issue.

@DavidCarlisle How rude. :)
!!/eightball Does David like vim?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: yes.

@egreg ok :) i am among the updated ones

@gekkostate I see that the MiKTeX package has been updated yesterday, try doing the update on your machine.

@egreg Does updating MikTeX involve re-downloading?
@egreg nevermind! Got it! @texenthusiast I have internet but I don't think it does automatic updating

@gekkostate You have to run some wizard in the Start button (or how's it called now).

9:37 PM
@egreg yup, doing that right now :)

@gekkostate @gekkostate standard link: How do I update my TeX distribution?
@gekkostate Of course, everything new must be downloaded, but sometimes in MiKTeX the package must be fully removed first. The problem is, that afterwards it counts as uninstalled package, and these are never installed automatically without any user action: Either you must have activated “installation-on-the-fly” or you go you own into the package amanger and reinstall. I prefer the latter.

@Speravir Okay, thank you

@gekkostate Oh, seems thankfully you understood despite of my topys … tyops … typos.

@Speravir haha, I managed!

@gekkostate Does it work now?

@egreg I just updated it and restarted TeXStudio so I'm about to see now

@gekkostate I don't think that would work right away the update is too new.

@percusse @egreg Now I'm getting errors that etex.sty and amsmath.sty doesn't exist

@percusse During installation/updating the fontname database is updated, as well.

@Speravir Sorry, what does that mean? Does my preamble or something have to change? or how long do I have to wait?

9:53 PM
@Speravir I mean the mirror updates of CTAN

@percusse Aah …

@gekkostate There's something about updates to MiKTeX not finding amsmath any more.
23
Q: A MiKTeX update removed amsmath as obsolete – can I use another package or get it back?

JablonI have a problem with amsmath package. After an update this package was removed because it was obsolete. But what package can use instead of amsmath?

@egreg @gekkostate What did I say some messages ago … ?

@PauloCereda We are dealing with a celebrity here no?

@Speravir that I need to activate "installation on the fly" or the other

9:56 PM
@percusse Marco and his Lamborghini. :)

@gekkostate Yes ; do the other. See the answers in egreg’ link (especially Heiko’s).

@gekkostate When an author updates a package in CTAN, it takes a while for the mirror servers sync with that update (often a few days but not sure). So probably Claudio noticed the mistake and pushed a new update but didn't make it to the mirrors yet. You can install manually to your local texmf or wait :)

@percusse mirror admin need to sync with the masters dante texuk

@texenthusiast Usually it's done automatically, but a delay of a couple of days is common. It depends on the mirror.

@egreg yes that's what i mean ctan.org/mirrors/mirmon

10:05 PM
@percusse what can be wrong with the pattern: 0,1,2...?

@texenthusiast So where should I look for the next scheduled update ?
@user4035 Sorry, regarding what?
3 might not come :P

@percusse how can I do a manual install?

@gekkostate You can download it manually and place it in the working folder. :) But this is only valid for smartdiagram since it's just a sty file and 3 other libraries. Don't even think about doing the same for others :)
Sorry I meant download the files in the working directory and run pdflatex on the ins file.

@percusse okay, I will try that. The files should just go in smartdiagram folder in my miktex folder right?

@percusse
I tried to improve your code. Did this:

\pgfmathsetmacro{\prev}{int(\x-1)}
\node (\x) [below= of \prev.south] {Block \x};

But it doesn't work. Maybe, it confuses int and string? What to fix?

10:10 PM
@gekkostate No put it where you want to use it (where your actual .tex file is). Think of it as a temporary local installation. Don't fiddle with MikTeX folder.

@percusse oh! Like that. I see and then I run pdflatex on the .ins file right?

@gekkostate Yes.
@user4035 Did you include the \usetikzlibrary{positioning} ?

@percusse twentee server seems to be updated soon

yes

@user4035 Ah you use \pgfmathsetmacro, you need \pgfmathtruncatemacro{\prev}{\x-1}

10:15 PM
@percusse I tried to compile with pdflatex and I get the following error "pdflatex -synctex=1 -interaction=nonstopmode 'smartdiagram.tex'"

@gekkostate Let me try

@percusse worked, thx

@user4035 You can also read my answer (where I have assumed that @percusse used \pgfmathtruncatemacro). :)

@gekkostate My mistake. Try running the dtx file with LaTeX=>PS

@Qrrbrbirlbel reading

10:20 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel You can skip the definition of \prev. A minor addition to global warming challenge, heh.

@percusse You too are allowed to read my answer. :P

@Qrrbrbirlbel I need 40 more minutes for upvoting :)
@texenthusiast Dutch servers are not online 24/7 so I use the german ones

@percusse Fantastic! It's working :D
@percusse Thanks a ton!

@percusse Ain't it 100 minutes till 0:00 UTC?

@Qrrbrbirlbel I never understood that thing.
YOLO :P

10:27 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel There are but I'm not talking to you as you tikzed my picture mode answer and stole a tick away:(

@gekkostate You did not download from a MiKTeX repository, I guess? _Aah, I see … some messages above.

!!/battle

@egreg Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 245 vs. 290 David. So far, David is winning.

@DavidCarlisle Don't be silly. :)

@DavidCarlisle Aww. :)

10:37 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel Don't worry, even without that 15 I'm way ahead of @egreg for the day:-)

@DavidCarlisle lol

phew back on chrome (I just crashed firefox four times, just coming back to this page:(

@DavidCarlisle Does Chrome continue to do its updates without asking?

@DavidCarlisle It's just because you use these nightmare nightly versions, isn't it?

@DavidCarlisle Boo chrome. :)

10:47 PM
@egreg Oh I expect so, but since I run FF nightly (or nightly wg9s) as a rule I can hardly complain about that:-)
@Speravir yes, it's usually flash that kills the unstable browser versions.
@PauloCereda I could have used IE10

@DavidCarlisle Lesser of two evils. :)

@DavidCarlisle Ooh …

@DavidCarlisle Nobody's updating during daytime?

Hello from IE10

@PauloCereda Do you know SRWare Iron? But the Linux and Mac versions are a bit behind …

10:55 PM
@Speravir Nope. Chrome source? I'll pass. :)

@PauloCereda Epiphany is quite fast and stylish, and without any privacy issue :)

@Xavier It's a good choice too. :)

Speaking of iron - this man looks a little bit like David (sorry in advance @DavidCarlisle) ad seems to have a similar kind of humor:

@Speravir probably better at ironing than me:-)

@PauloCereda Nitpick: It's Chromium source.
@DavidCarlisle Perhaps you should try it with gin as well …
And BTW here a man who is better than 999 permille of men:

11:14 PM
Progress report on the Forth interpreter: 140 of the 149 core words implemented. Only 9 to go :-). Good night guys!

@BrunoLeFloch You are slowly approximating PostScript aren't you ? :)

@BrunoLeFloch Good night, Bruno! :)

Hey guys, I have a question about side by side figure placement. I am using the following code but it's not side by side. Here is a MWE: `\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{smartdiagram}
\begin{document}
\begin{figure}[!h]

\begin{minipage}{0.45\textwidth}
\centering
\smartdiagram[flow diagram]{Login, GUI, User information, Exit}
\end{minipage}

\begin{minipage}{0.45\textwidth}
\centering
\smartdiagram[flow diagram]{Lesson, Editor, Compile, Exercise}
\end{minipage}

\end{figure}
\end{document}`

!!/battle
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 245 vs. 290 David. So far, David is winning.

@gekkostate Don't leave a blank line between the two minipage environments.

11:28 PM
@egreg Thanks! Works fine now!

@gekkostate And never use [h!]

Next week I'll be watching Hiromi live

@percusse WOW!

@PauloCereda Together with Simon Philips and Anthony Jackson :) I'll be a happy man for a few days at least

@egreg, I got that far but was trying to make \num{10000} use the e form, but it seems not to want to do that, the form in the manual only typesets with e if you input in that form I think.

11:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle There are other options to set
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{siunitx}
\sisetup{output-exponent-marker=\ensuremath{\mathrm{E}},
  fixed-exponent=2,scientific-notation=fixed}

\begin{document}
\num{10000}

\num{1e3}

\SI{2.3e5}{m}
\end{document}
Also scientific-notation=true can be useful
If you say scientific-notation=engineering the exponent is always a multiple of 3
So, for the first one you get 10.000E3

!!/battle
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 245 vs. 290 David. So far, David is winning.

@egreg ah thanks, I got as far as scientific-notation= but didn't get it right somehow then saw you'd posted and gave up:-)

@DavidCarlisle There are *too many*™ options.

@egreg It should use tikz, we should tell Joseph.

@DavidCarlisle Multiply the number of options by 100 (not considering slashes)

11:53 PM
@DavidCarlisle If Bruno succeeds then run for cover :)

@egreg but don't you think formatting of scientific papers would be improved if each digit was highlighted in a translucent colour with a border approximating an amoeba?
2

Don't forget the curvy arrows starting from the ToC to actual section headings that span a few pages.

!!/eightball will @egreg get 45 points in the next 5 minutes?

@DavidCarlisle Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: signs point to yes.

@PauloCereda 15 came in. :)

11:56 PM
Ah I'm at 180 :)

@egreg :)

Just wait I'll write a QR generator
in 5 mins

@percusse 3 mins for Bruno to implement PostScript and then 2 for you to hook up that PostScript QR generator.

@percusse I can provide some smartphone app that sends us credit card info based on the personal data encoded in the QR code. :)

@DavidCarlisle That would get me at least 40 points.
@PauloCereda Are you also going to put it into TL2014?
