@leo This one: Picture (Engl. Wikibooks).

@Speravir :-O

@texenthusiast I learned Lua afterwards. :) David asked me the same question in the UK-TUG meeting. :)
I just wrote the most random answer of all times.

@percusse OMG triangle man!

@PauloCereda my idea came from Why not use language X instead of Lua? :) anyway i have no idea thanks for the tool.

@GonzaloMedina We very often get question that asks for this |-|/-|- paths in TikZ. I guess that all those question are a duplicate of:
9
Q: Vertical and horizontal lines in pgf-tikz

DrJayIt is easy to produce a path between two nodes consisting of a single horizontal and a single vertical line (from the manual): \begin{tikzpicture} \draw (0,0) node(a) [draw] {A} (1,1) node(b) [draw] {B}; \draw (a.north) |- (b.west); \draw[color=red] (a.east) -| (2,1.5) -| (b.north); \end{...

This is a thing you can't really search for, too.

1:45 AM
@Qrrbrbirlbel I agree. Good to have the question at hand; I hadn't seen it. Perhaps then we could vote to close the question.

@GonzaloMedina Yes. I actually was looking for one of my answers regarding one of those paths but finally found this one with Google. This question comes up at least one a week …
@GonzaloMedina I have voted already …

@Qrrbrbirlbel Voted too.
@PauloCereda Hi!

Hm, we need a side-by-side editor/preview for SX. So much white space on a 1080p screen! And so much scrolling.

@GonzaloMedina Hi Gonzalo! How are you?
So far, I'm only 120 votes behind the top SO voter. If I beat this number, I'll become the top voter of the whole SE universe! bwawawa <- evil laugh.

@PauloCereda If you need some answers to vote search for user:16595. ;)

@Qrrbrbirlbel Challenge accepted. :) But I need moar votes. :)
I'm out of them right now.

@PauloCereda Fine, and you? Already out of votes, as I see.

I am feeling much better now. I could write a loop in LaTeX (improperly) .

Hey guys, I had a quick question about tables. I am getting overful \hbox with the following table and I've tried to fix it with `@{}` and `p{5cm}` but it's not working. What could be the issue? `\begin{tabular}{|c|c|c|c|}
\hline Module(Overview of classes) & Input & Process & Output \\
\hline Runner & None & Controls the calling of Main.java & Main.java \\
\hline Main & None & Controls functions of sub-classes & sub-class output \\
\hline User & First name and last name & Group the inputted information & The inputted information \\
Nevermind, got it! :)

@gekkostate What did you do? Could you post your fixed thing please?

@PauloCereda Already? After two hours? Well, then tomorrow … :)

@gekkostate Due to this replyTo give clear scope of your question and concise, If i may suggest the title as " Visual comparison between LaTeX and Word ouput" in terms of typesetting, hyphenation,kerning, fonts, ligatures, glyphs, transparency with support/links to nitens.org/taraborelli/latex. feel free.

@kan i could not follow comment

kan
@texenthusiast Hmm, I was suggesting that I tried tracking down but I was not very successful.

@kan you are the "commenter" ?

kan
@texenthusiast Yes, I am. Or, am I not?
:)

@kan you are so formal as in a journal paper writing his findings :)

kan
@texenthusiast I just tried for having some fun. I was obviously bored then. :)

4:00 AM
@kan do you have this book OP said, the scan are not so good to eyes especially lower one.

kan
@texenthusiast Surely in the library (I am at a distance 10 foot away from there), there are atleast three copies. :)

@kan if possible you can add the snippets otherwise leave it experts might have already minted their code

kan
@texenthusiast I think google fonts might be way to go. The P can be had from the Petite Formal Script. There are several script fonts of that kind... Brent has a Git repository and he has a Google fonts in LaTeX version... But, I could not wok out how that was done.

@gekkostate i hope you are in safe unclose zone now , may be edit int Q into bullets with same matter for better look and feel if you have time.
@kan its a lull period, sometime once they are back

5:13 AM
@TorbjørnT. Hi :) what are the deleted 5 characters mean ?

@texenthusiast Not sure exactly what they are, but if you look at the original comment they shouldn't be there.

@TorbjørnT. i don't see any difference , is it spaces ? i removed even unbalanced \begin{center} as well to avoid confusion

@texenthusiast Oh, you don't see them at all. Sorry, my browser sometimes show these characters other places as well, and I've never bothered to investigate. I'll upload an image in a sec.

@TorbjørnT. no worries, i wanted to learn editing from peers thats all. :)

5:25 AM
@TorbjørnT. got it , spurious character due to cut copy paste laziness from me, Thanks for clarification.
@TorbjørnT. i am having unicode on my chrome is that good right ?

@egreg Good grief! The one who asked me the question I had yesterday has complicated matters... :(

@kan Did you see my last version? The one where only one control sequence is defined. Tell the person that complicated notation will bite her/him somedays.

kan
@egreg In this case, this is more of a necessity! :( The problem is they have to type so many pages of calculations that involve expressions of this kind... some manipulations...
@egreg Your recommended solution works for this case they have in mind too! Thanks!
I am also looking forward to helping them out with some thing like a sympy implementation...
The work is really lot of calculations...

@cmhughes I blame vim users for the two downvotes on that question:-)

@virtualeightball why is my software buggy?

@topskip Virtual Psmith: Because you didn't write it in literate style using web.

@egreg I have one last question for you! :)
Is it possible to do the last step of your last macro as follows:
\cs_new:Npn \__kan_print:nn #1 #2
 {
  \csname\greek#1\endcsname\sb{#2}
 }
@egreg I of course have defined \greeka, \greekb and so on...

@kan Not with the backslash before greek; but \use:c{greek#1} is just the same

when i have a theorem environment and and enumeration, and i label one of the items, how can i say latex to print the name of the environment the number of it and the itemname?

kan
@egreg Hah, I am somehow feeling that I am understanding this stuff. :)

@kan \use:c is just a more convenient wrapper around \csname...\endcsname which form a control sequence name from the characters in between them.

12:22 PM
Today's fortune:

@DavidCarlisle It's the emacs militia. :)

12:40 PM
I get a warnigin from a reference and i really don't know what i am doing wrong

@DominicMichaelis and the warning is?

pdfTeX warning (dest): name{Def.3.2} has been referenced but does not exist,
replaced by a fixed one
I use amsthm and hyperref and I refer to one of the amsthm environments which i labeled. I don't see the difference to the other label refs i made earlier or later
it is the only one with theoremstyle{remark} could that be a problem ?

@DominicMichaelis usually they sort themselves out if you re-run you can get that if you delete (or renumber) a numbered thing as hyperref builds the pdf bookmarks links based on information on the previous run, and it's trying to link to something that isn't there now.

I did erase the output files and compiled 3 times but it doesn't change

12:54 PM
ok i try my best
mh i have no idea where the error comes from :(

@DominicMichaelis well that's the idea, just chop out arbitrary bits of the document until the error gooes array

kan
@egreg Is there a readable introduction to ExplSyntax somewhere... :)

@David Carlisle When i put the label at the end of the environment it gives no warnigns, the environment breaks over a page may that cause the problem ?
oh i have to drive home now see you later

@kan texdoc expl3 interface3

@PauloCereda OK, coming from Paulo, I presume, readability conditions are met. :)

@davidcarlisle This seems to be for you: a graphics question where the OP doesn't want to use TikZ or PSTricks. ;)

Q: Any package for typesetting polyominos/tetris-like shapes?

user26372I would like to typeset some easy polyomino puzzles and therefore need a suitable LaTeX package. I could not find an easy to use package (other than using TikZ of course). Is there any approach other than using TikZ/PSTricks? For anybody not aware of what polyominos are: http://en.wikipedia.org/...

Wait a minute, Shakespare Day?!
How to Talk Like Shakespeare

    Instead of you, say thou or thee (and instead of y’all, say ye).
    Rhymed couplets are all the rage.
    Men are Sirrah, ladies are Mistress, and your friends are all called Cousin.
    Instead of cursing, try calling your tormenters jackanapes or canker-blossoms or poisonous bunch-back’d toads.
    Don’t waste time saying "it," just use the letter "t" (’tis, t’will, I’ll do’t).
    Verse for lovers, prose for ruffians, songs for clowns.
    When in doubt, add the letters "eth" to the end of verbs (he runneth, he trippeth, he falleth).

Any such package would in turn use TikZ/PSTricks, and probably have a very TikZ/MP-like interface. If you can make a polyomino with TikZ, then I suggest you simply write such a package, as one does not appear to exist. — Sean Allred 3 hours ago

Just loading the geometry package changes my \textwidth from 9.7 cm to 10.4 cm.
Does anyone know anything about this strange behaviour?
Is it fixed in a newer version maybe?

@Christian Maybe that's the default setting.

@percusse I didn't know geometry was supposed to do anything unless I make it do something?
I just need its \newgeometry \restoregeometry pair.

@Christian Comment it out if you are not using it or give a4paper etc. option to tame it.

I am using it but I'm not using it for the overall document geometry, just for single pages.
Shouldn't the a5paper option I give to the \documentclass also apply to geometry? I mean it seems it does, it just has a different opinion on what that means than memoir does.

Maybe it's including the margins too. do you have ignoremp set?
It also has a reset option.

I haven't.
I'll try to set it and see if that changes anything.
Nope.

Ehm what?

Altough Campinas is not that close to me.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if you were familiar with smart diagram package?
I'm getting an error while loading it ! Package smartdiagram Error: I did not find the smartdiagram library 'core.definitions'..

@gekkostate Did you install it yourself or via MikTeX?

@percusse I have MiKTeX downloaded and I am using TeXStudio

!!/eightball is Frank's verse environment better than mine?

7:37 PM
@DavidCarlisle Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: ask again later.

@PauloCereda When I was living in Catania, I met a colleague during my holidays at home, he was going to Barcelona for a semester; his son was quite surprised that from Padova to Catania was a bit longer than to Barcelona.

@egreg It must be a beautiful trip, I believe. :)

Those 918 km are not real: it's almost 1300. Italy is really long. :)

@gekkostate Can you give a small MWE that still produces the error

!!/eightball is Frank's verse environment better than mine?

7:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: better not tell you now.

@PauloCereda chicken

!!/eightball is Frank's verse environment better than David's?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ
LOL

@PauloCereda three times he's refused to say:-)

aaaah rick rolled again

hi guys

7:40 PM
but closed it directly :) Phew

@MarioS.E. Hello! :)
@DavidCarlisle I'll try again.
!!/eightball is Frank's verse environment better than David's?

Bom dia @PauloCereda :)

@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: lalalala can't hear you now lalalala
@MarioS.E. Olá! :)
Damn, this bot.

Guys, can any of you please take a look at this question? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/110217/… It's been bugging me all day...

@DavidCarlisle Just like a famous man thrice was offered a crown...

7:45 PM
@MarioS.E. I strongly disagree with the detailed personal communication citation. First, nobody cares how you did, second, if they are more than two exchanges basically that means you are collaborating so it needs full acknowledgements.
It's used for that guy taught me that type of acknowledgements.
Not for we met in the cafeteria and he ordered strawberry ice cream while I was chilling .....

@percusse HAHahahahahahahah
@percusse I get the idea, but still... don't you think that when you have an email back and forth about some topic this should be mentioned? Specially when it's the product of a large deliberation

@MarioS.E. You cite the end result of that discussion not how you did it

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

yes, but you can't say in your paper "After long hours of emails, I finally got to the conclusion that women should take calcium pills after age 45"
you should "cite" this somehow

That's not citable. It's your interpretation

7:52 PM
another example then. What about if in one mail a persons says something you like so much you want it to be included as one of your conclusions. Of course that is not your idea, and that idea is not published anywhere... so... what to do in this case?

@PauloCereda You pass by Bologna, Florence, Orvieto, Rome, Naples, Pompei, Salerno; then the whole coast of Calabria, Messina, Taormina, the Etna. Very different places and landscapes. Or you can go along the Adriatic Sea: Ravenna, Rimini, Pesaro, Pescara, Foggia, Bari; then the other coast of Calabria.

@MarioS.E. You just include it in the conclusions. It's not legal document. You can use first person sentences :)

@percusse It's my PhD thesis... hehehehehehe

During the preperation of this thesis, This person kindly suggested to include bla bla which is a very good idea... or a clever idea or something like that
theses are even more informal
since it's your document and it should only be defendable as opposed to publishable

@percusse you've enlightened me!

7:55 PM
@MarioS.E. I hope your supervisor thinks alike :)

is there a !!/thank you ?

:)

@egreg How nice!

@PauloCereda If one wants to shortly visit all the important places along the road, the trip would last a couple of months.

@percusse
`\documentclass[12pt,letterpaper]{article}
\usepackage{smartdiagram}
\begin{document}

\smartdiagram[flow diagram]{Login, GUI, User information, Exit}
\end{document}`
@percusse That's MWE except it's not working

8:08 PM
@egreg I'd love to visit Verona, Padova, Bologna, Venezia, Milanno, Trento. :)

@gekkostate What's the error?

@egreg ! Package smartdiagram Error: I did not find the smartdiagram library 'core.definitions'..

@PauloCereda Well, Trento has only a few things to see: the cathedral and the castle. For a short visit of Venice reserve at least two weeks in your program.

@gekkostate Did you try running TeXShop as admin?
Seems like on-the-fly install is not working for you

@egreg :)

8:11 PM
@percusse That's odd because on-the-fly was working with TeXMaker

@egreg: I need to buy some souvenir in Padova for my dad (because of Antonio) and in Assissi for me (because of Francesco). :)
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL!

@gekkostate No I can replicate the error. The core.definitions are not packed properly i guess

@percusse So, how can it be fixed? Will I have to do a manual download?

I think the .dtx file is not run properly. They should have been created

Bayern:Barcelona -- 4:0 --

8:24 PM
Seems like barcelone really lose

@DominicMichaelis I am really surprised

8:35 PM
@MarcoDaniel What were you saying in the afternoon?

@DavidCarlisle: you should have taken our advice on betting money. :)
@egreg: We lost to the champion. :)

@PauloCereda Seems the OP isn't as scared as Psmith to make a decision and Frank got the tick:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh!
!!/battle
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 245 vs. 0 David. So far, egreg is winning.
o.O
I sense a bug. :P
!!/battle
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 245 vs. 260 David. So far, David is winning.

@PauloCereda I sense someone been deliberately spiking the source code.

:)
@DavidCarlisle <3

8:48 PM
@PauloCereda no, I like only Bavarian beer :-) However, it was a good match, but not for Barcelona :-)

@Herbert Ah. :) Indeed, it was a great match, specially in the last 20 minutes. :)

@PauloCereda In Barcelona Barca will win 5:0 ... :-))

@Herbert :) Bayern should not score, though. :)
