Paulo Cereda on June 06, 2015

Yesterday, we lost Hermann Zapf. Brilliant type designer, a very special person. Hermann was 96.

He lived in Darmstadt, Germany and had been an Honorary member of the board of the TeX Users Group since 1980, with the deserved title of “Wizard of Fonts”.

Hermann Zapf directly contributed to the TeX world with the Euler fonts and with several discussions with Donald Knuth about the design of the Computer Modern fonts. His legacy to the world of typography and type design is too big to be reduced to a list of his contributions: just the mention of Palatino, Optima and Zapfino, three fonts he designed, can illustrate his craftsmanship in type design. …

@egreg, @barbara: I published the post; we can edit it at any time. Thank you very much for the text.

@PauloCereda Great! Thanks

@StefanKottwitz Credit goes to @egreg. :)

we all know @egreg likes palindromes, he should ask the question, 78 questions from now.

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@PauloCereda do you think he's got time to learn how to do it?

@DavidCarlisle I doubt it. :)

10:58 AM
@PauloCereda: Great. I would like to share on FB and Google+, but I don't see any button :-(

@ChristianHupfer Hm do you use AdBlockPlus?

@PauloCereda: Nope, I don't think so. I can share questions/answers from TeX.SX without problems. Perhaps, I should just provide a link to the post, that would do (not as well, but almost)

@ChristianHupfer oh

11:18 AM
@PauloCereda: Posting the url on Google+ works ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Yay!

@ChristianHupfer Cool, but I didn't write that all by myself, @egreg wrote most of it. :)

@PauloCereda: I will edit it accordingly

@ChristianHupfer <3

11:30 AM
@PauloCereda: Updated the status of that shared content

@ChristianHupfer Danke. :)
@ChristianHupfer: quaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

@PauloCereda: Martin Schröder posted some tributes too on Google+

@ChristianHupfer ooh awesome

Q: Let's weaponize jellyfish

AifyJellyfish are... weird. They're clear, slimy, and can sting after death. Sounds perfect for experimentation, so lets weaponize them! 12:29 PM
@PauloCereda Weapons of mass jellification? ;-)

12:55 PM
@egreg -- i had to run away before i could look at this last night. it's good. there's nothing i can add to make it better. i will treasure the note that came to me with a copy of "alphabet stories" from hermann himself, signed with that big, beautiful "Z" that could identify nobody else.
@MartinSchröder -- i'm already inviting contributions. if not a whole issue, certainly a collection of essays devoted particularly to his influence on the tex community.

I was just about to ask a similar question to this:

Q: Is it always best practice to not include text punctuation in inline math mode?

Hendrik VogtIt has been pointed out on this site, e.g. here by egreg, that text punctuation doesn't belong to the formula in inline math. I've been following this practice for a long time, so I write for all $v\in V$, where ... as opposed to for all $v\in V,$ where .... However, the first version prevents ke...

Two years on, is the situation still the same? (No good way to automatically maintain the kerning.)
@ChristianHupfer @PauloCereda we have weapons of mass hyphenation and justification on our site, much more fun if you ask me. :-)
About the question above: if anybody has a better answer today I'm happy to set a bounty. :-)

4:05 PM
@PaulGessler -- not a better answer, but an additional bit to thing about ... if the math is in a theorem (assumed to be set in italic), the shape of the commas is likely to be different, so the "text" comma should definitely be set as text, to match the rest of the text. ideally, though, there could be a "theorem font", in which all punctuation is set upright.
this was discussed at some length when ams adopted tex, and adapted the times font for use therein; but it proved too complicated and memory hungry to be implemented effectively. hence the dilemma we find ourselves with today.

@barbarabeeton I always do put text punctuation in text-mode, which is why I'm in this dilemma in the first place. :-) I'm not a mathematician (far from it! haha), but I've always wondered why Theorems are set in italics. Is there some history behind this?
@barbarabeeton interesting that it was discussed and tabled. What solution was too complicated and memory hungry? Looking ahead for punctuation with \everymath as David suggested in a comment to his answer?

4:31 PM
@PaulGessler -- the most serious limitation at that time was the number of font families available. (the number of font families that can be used for math is still strictly limited to 16. the sneaky workarounds to access occasional additions are truly "gothic".) memory was also very limited, but that was secondary.

@barbarabeeton ah, ok, so it was the 'theorem font' which was discussed and dropped. I misread the connection between your two messages. Thanks for the info!

4:43 PM
@PaulGessler -- theorems have been set in italic for ages. i'm not sure when the practice started, but i can cite its use in the very first volume of the bulletin of the new york mathematical society (predecessor to the ams; theorems quoted on pp.185 and 186 are in italic). and all manuals for composition of math specify italic for theorems.
@PaulGessler -- sorry for the confusion. i could answer the second question from memory. addressing the first required some library lookup.

5:00 PM
Back from the tour. Very nice!

@egreg Yay! Did you swin? :)
@PaulGessler LOL

5:29 PM
@PauloCereda Swin? :)

@egreg -- perhaps that's "paddle around like a swan"?

yo'
@barbarabeeton awwww

@egreg oopsie. :)
@barbarabeeton <3
@yo' barbara saved me. :)

@barbarabeeton No swim, but I saw several herons, sea gulls and cormorants.

@egreg awesome! Was it a cold day?

5:34 PM
@PauloCereda Very hot! But on the river there was a nice breeze. And the lunch was gorgeous.

@egreg How nice!
@barbara: yesterday I watched a lovely documentary by BBC about Brazilian forests; they focused on Pantanal, very impressive!
@egreg: ice cream, hopefully? :)

@egreg -- i'm very fond of herons and cormorants (especially when they're "hanging out", drying off). gulls can be another matter. but it depends which kind. (i never thought i'd feel sorry for a herring gull until the black-backed variety started to take over. herring gulls just can't compete.)

Does anybody have some information about sientific workplace to fill in the tag wiki? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/scientific-workplace

@PauloCereda No ice cream. But fish until full.

@egreg yummy!
@barbarabeeton, @egreg: I went to refill my water bottle and when I returned, my chair was occupied:

5:53 PM
@Johannes_B -- done. could be improved.

@barbarabeeton thanks

yo'
@PauloCereda oh a companion!

@PauloCereda -- that fur looks like it would make a wonderful warm rug. (but i certainly wouldn't want to deprive the critter!)

@yo' I had to get another chair, and Fubá is below it. :P
@barbarabeeton :)

@PauloCereda Never try moving a cat from the place he chose!
@PauloCereda Time to go and prepare my spirit for what's following. ;-)
@PauloCereda The “unanswered” session, I mean. ;-)

6:15 PM
@egreg :)

yo'
@egreg a sad day for my university :-(

6:37 PM
Hey! Some time ago I asked about how to solve a problem with hyperlinks with \begin{theorem} \label{whatever} \begin{enumerate} for instance. The “solution” adding \phantomsection before \label. But… now I discovered that when I do \autoref{whatever} I get Section 6.28 instead of Theorem 6.28. Any solution at first sight?

6:54 PM
@egreg: uh-oh
@DavidCarlisle: it might not be a good time to talk about football now. :)

@PauloCereda important match: women's world cup?

@DavidCarlisle Seph Blatter wants shorter shorts. :)
@egreg: Pirlo hasn't touched the ball.
@egreg: Vidal will get a red card soon.

7:28 PM
@Jake: Hi!

@yo' What happened?

@barbarabeeton What do you say to this one? Calling the code confusing would be calling rocket since candy making. If the university provides a template, why isn't it fixed? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/248957/…

yo'
@egreg the rector made a change at the position of the vice-rector for research and science; the new person is not really strong in research -- how can be strong in this position? :-/ Moreover, the reasons behind this change seem to be political; the money is always only at the first place.

@yo' Good organizer?

@barbarabeeton In comparison that question of the same user from a week ago: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/247899/…

@egreg let's see what's going to happen. But in my opinion, this is a huge jump back.

@PauloCereda @egreg ^^^

@DavidCarlisle OMG

@Johannes_B -- yikes! i don't use memoir myself, so i'm not sure whether it centers pages horizontally, or shifts them left/right to allow for hole-punching and suchlike. that's what needs to be looked at. but it could use some cleaning up -- it loads amsfonts more than once, along with amssymb; one amssymb would take care of the lot. and it doesn't specify \mainmatter or what to do with the body. the "daleif" references make me wonder how lars madsen was involved.

@barbarabeeton He is the maintainer, i have seen the chapter-title layout on site. Maybe he posted the code.

8:05 PM
@Johannes_B -- well, he certainly didn't post this question. i'll query him. he's a user here, so i'll point him to the question. (curiouser and curiouser.)

@barbarabeeton ^^^^ all sharing some code related to Lars

@egreg: Uh-oh.

@Johannes_B -- okay. i've figured out one thing -- lars is the maintainer of memoir, peter wilson having "retired". but i doubt that lars is the maintainer of that thesis template. i suspect his name is at least somewhat "being taken in vain". but i will inquire.

Looking through the unanswered

@barbarabeeton That thesis template probably has no maintainer and probably a bunch of contributors. :-(

8:21 PM
Welcome to the... is it now?

@Johannes_B -- exactly what i suspect. i also strongly suspect that the folks in charge of setting standards for thesis presentation in [most|almost all] cases have no knowledge of latex.

@barbarabeeton And typography.

@PauloCereda -- still nearly 40 minutes, but you can start preparing.

@barbarabeeton ooh

As an unofficial thesis template maintainer, O
I'd (a) host it at the university, never third-party by default, (b) have documentation.
And many templates are crap, either due to maintainer error or crazy style requirements.
