@Aditya each time you share this I can't help but notice the glaring typo on slide 4: Surely you're discussing 'Smart Grids', not 'Smart Girds', yes? ;-)

1 hour later…
1:31 AM
@ArthurReutenauer ooh tricky question. :) I think vocabulary differences are the most common barrier (I think syntatic structures are almost identical in both variants); but I confess I have trouble in understanding the phonetic component. I think we Brazilians speak more slowly (my impression), in which both stressed and unstressed syllables are visibly pronounced; when I hear other Portuguese variants, I notice that stressed syllables are very emphasized and the unstressed ones are not pronounced. :)

2:14 AM
@PaulGessler I should just declare that I am dyslexic, and forward all my documents to you to proof read :-)
There are others as well: google.ca/search?q=%22smart+girds%22

@DavidCarlisle Sometimes prayer is all you have left.

And the prize for the first post tl2015 freeze latex bug report goes to @egreg (@JosephWright)

@DavidCarlisle Link?
@DavidCarlisle Not so much of an issue with online updates unless it's a real killer

Possibly \TextOrMath? — egreg 24 mins ago

@DavidCarlisle This is a LaTeX bug?

@JosephWright I had in mind textormath was "new" but I looked in latexrelease.sty it wasn't there so I didn't mention it and decided it musht have been older, @egreg says I should.... ltcounts.dtx should be in the latexrelease .ins file
@JosephWright not that serious latexrelease should back out those changes, but it doesn't

@DavidCarlisle Ah
@DavidCarlisle We need to decide on how to handle such things: do we update as we go or (more likely) wait for some fixed period

8:48 AM
Just a simple question, do I need to count blank pages before new chapters in a report?

@JosephWright updating the format should be reasonably fixed periods I think unless it's completely broken. It would be nice to be able to update packages more frequently but the packages in base and especially that one are rather intimately tied to the format sources....
@wget what do you mean by "need" and "count"

@DavidCarlisle Yes, but I suppose I'm getting at the fact we probably can fix this without waiting a year! One to talk about at the TUG meeting, I think.

@JosephWright in the old days Robin would have slipped a new latexrelease.sty on to ctan and no one need say anything:-)

@DavidCarlisle Exactly
@DavidCarlisle Needs Frank's input: it's easy enough for me to do a release to CTAN, after all

@JosephWright at some point today I'll make a test file and update the ins

8:52 AM
@DavidCarlisle Great

@DavidCarlisle I didn't even try, to be honest. But I remembered having seen it somewhere.

@egreg troublemaker

@DavidCarlisle By "need" I meant what the consensus/convention. And count, I meant take page number into consideration in the numbering scheme.
Don't know if I'm clear.

9:20 AM
@DavidCarlisle There's still a starred comment in the right column about this:
yesterday, by David Carlisle
@SeanAllred I never did understand latex

9:40 AM
@wget oh normal thing is to count it but (perhaps) not print it. latex relies on that as its twoside handling assumes right hand pages are odd, which isn't the case if you hav eunnumbered pages
@egreg well I checked something in to the latex sources, understanding or not

@DavidCarlisle So my question now, how to avoid footers and headers to be printed on these empty pages ;-)

@wget \pagestyle{empty} there's a version of \cleardoublepage around that uses \thispagestyle in the middle of the definition of \cleardoublepage or just define it directly it's only three or four lines
@wget eg
2
A: Remove header from the page after TOC and LOF

dgoodmaniiiI got this code snippet many, many years ago from I don't remember where, so unfortunately I can't credit its originator; but it certainly isn't mine. \makeatletter \def\cleardoublepage{\clearpage\if@twoside \ifodd\c@page\else \hbox{} \vspace*{\fill} \thispagestyle{empty} \newpage \if@twocolumn\...

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. I didn't know the TeX commands \ifodd and \ifeven existed. In that way I can reimplement the twoside document class option in my own class without relying on other classes.

@wget \ifeven doesn't exist unless youve defined it, \ifodd is a tex primitive

10:39 AM
@JosephWright `(./latexrelease.sty
! Argument of \IncludeInRelease has an extra }.` :(

@Aditya ah, don't worry, mistakes like these happen to me all the time too. :-) There is a quotation somewhere about a document not being a proper thesis unless it has at least one typo on the first page. :-)

11:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle Huh?

@JosephWright see the diff that I checked in later, the \includerinrelase markup was "interesting" but had never been tried as that file wasn't included into latexrelease.sty, I ran a build check and it hung forever on one test...

@DavidCarlisle Just caught up with e-mails: I see now

@JosephWright \IncludeInRelease}{2015/01/01}{\@stpelt}{% was particular interesting placement of brackets

2 hours later…
1:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle I've been thinking, can't \caption be stored in a \toks register to keep it from expanding too soon? So that it can be expanded the moment the box is actually typeset (in which case expansion is forced?).

Really I don't understand. Just defined a boolean value like on page 7 of the xkeyval manual. And when I specify the boolean value as my class option, I've got nothing;
\PackageInfo{template}{turning shadows on}%
isn't outputed in my compilation logs :-/

1:44 PM
@egreg: ready for tomorrow? :)

Hum actually. None of my packageinfo statement is being printed :-(

@wget: Perhaps you should ask a real question on the main site

@ChristianHupfer That was my intention, but before I need to locate the location which could be responsible. I don't want to post my whole class file (1k lines) and ask others to find for me. xD

@wget: I see... I have some experience with xkeyval, perhaps I can be of help, but not with some single lines thrown into chat ;-)

2:28 PM
@ChristianHupfer Ok. Problem narrowed. I can check the value of my boolean now. But as soon I set it in my command arguments, the compilation fails :-/
\title[maintitle=some main title,
subtitle=some subtitle,ownpage=true,
author=firstname \textsc{lastname} \href{mailto:first@lastna}{\nolinkurl{<first@last.be>}}]
And I think I even solved the issue \o/

2:53 PM
@Johannes: your avatar looks like some blushed bloke. :)
:)

@PauloCereda It is a green Martian with a moustache ;-)

@Johannes_B lies. :)

@Johannes_B: What's the result of this comparing \listfiles from yesterday? I didn't catch up since I had to go

I bet i have listened to this song 20 times in a row. Bobina feat. Betsie Larkin - You Belong To Me (MacroVision Remix)
@PauloCereda ;-)
@ChristianHupfer You list showed loading an additional package abntex2cite which fixes the problem.

yesterday, by Paulo Cereda
ABNT! /shakes fist

2:55 PM
@Johannes_B: Strange... I used the same code you posted in the answer. But apparently I have a slightly more up-to-date version of that abn stuff

@ChristianHupfer Exactlly, the working code, but not the same code posted here in chat showing the error ;-)
23 hours ago, by David Carlisle
@Johannes_B was going to say the list was different. So three different \listfiles to compare, each using a different source docuement. fail :(

@Johannes_B: Well, I am lost right now... Your code didn't work, you said, on your machine? I used the posted code and it worked on my machine

yesterday, by Johannes_B
\documentclass{abntex2}
\begin{document}
\chapter{lambada leguan}
\end{document}
@ChristianHupfer ^^^^ this one did not work.

@Johannes_B: Apparently we're talking about different codes ... :D

@ChristianHupfer Fail :-)

3:02 PM
@Johannes_B: I thought it's about the posted code, not that @DavidCarlislean - like short - example ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I cannot post an answer not working on my machine.

@Johannes_B: You can -- I sometimes do it as well :D

@Johannes_B LOL

Q: Putting a \newcommand in a tabularx

Gregory WestI have two command I have created with \newcommand, both work find. One is \mydate{date_variable} the other is \PrintOne{Variable1}{Variable2}. My problem is I can not figure out how I can put them in two of my columns in a tabularx table. The TeX report is begin called from a program that is...

@Johannes_B <3
@ChristianHupfer Keming.

@PauloCereda: Sorry, I mean the question I linked

@ChristianHupfer ah. :) Image was funnier. :)

@PauloCereda Somehow ... ;-)

@PauloCereda Quite. I'll do a boat tour in the Po delta, leaving at 8am.

3:22 PM
@egreg ooh how nice!
@ChristianHupfer :)

@ChristianHupfer A rapist who does massage, what's so strange about it?

@ChristianHupfer: There's a website about Pen Island. I won't dare telling you their web address. :)

@egreg Sorry, the question was misleading. I meant the \newcommand question. I should have used a new line
@PauloCereda: I am too young, too innocent to understand what you want to indicate ... lalalalalalala can't hear you, do not see anything you post ... lalalala

@ChristianHupfer :P

@PauloCereda Bad jokes must be starred :-P

3:30 PM
@PauloCereda You're referring to the “unanswered session”, aren't you?

@egreg the game. :)
@ChristianHupfer Revenge. :)

@egreg No-one has signed up :-(

@JosephWright Done. :)

@JosephWright I'll try to be there, but no promises :-/

@PauloCereda Yawning :D
@JosephWright: I can sign up, but I fear, I've no time again this Saturday

3:37 PM
Everybody sign for tomorrow's session!!! chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/41/…
4

@egreg -- while you're out on the river?

3:53 PM
@JosephWright: Signed in, but without warranty to show up

@barbarabeeton I'll get back in time!

4:18 PM
@1010011010 yes but
@ChristianHupfer just looking at the title, i can guess:-)

@DavidCarlisle No wonder, as tabularx author ;-)

@ChristianHupfer am I?

@DavidCarlisle: Exhibit A
%% File: tabularx.dtx Copyright (C) 1991-1999 2012 2014 David Carlisle
@DavidCarlisle: :D
@DavidCarlisle: I put it to you that you published on purpose a hungarian phrasebook LaTeX package called tabularx just to perplex innocent LaTeX users ;-)
3

@ChristianHupfer probably you are thinking of:

4:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle Well, the resemblance is astonishing ;-) It's very easy to be confused ...

@ChristianHupfer you've only seen me in monochrome

@DavidCarlisle: Well, unfortunately we won't meet in Darmstadt, to see you, in the whole range from 400 to 800 nm ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I will not buy this tabular, it is scratched

@JosephWright :D

@DavidCarlisle but? :-)

4:51 PM
@1010011010 but how are you going to rewrite the float placement algorithm which assumes that it has fixed size boxes which affect the page breaking decision, you can set things up to save the caption and set when the float is placed but that's the easy bit the hard part is changing all the rest of latex that's not expecting that.

5:03 PM
@egreg I'm just going offline but if you are answering that IEEEtran question you just commented on you might need this:

@PauloCereda do mi sol ... do mi sol ... mi mi re mi fa ... re ... mi mi re mi fa ... re ... mi ... re ... do

@ChristianHupfer I think you're trying too hard with that West guy ;-)

what is the command (internal) in the "standard" document classes that puts the brackets around a \cite? i'm going quite daft trying to find it. it's not \@biblabel, which formats the label in the bibliography. it's not \@cite@ofmt, which only formats what goes inside the brackets.

Q: How to change theorem display citation style right after thmhead

Ethan PhanI would like to change the display style of 'citation' in a theorem using 'book' class. For example, by default, it would display \begin{theorem}\cite{pS97} <theorem-content> \end{theorem} as Theorem 1. [11] <theorem-content>. How to change the display style of citation in the Theorem to...

what i'm trying to do is override the "local" formatting and create a situation in which the brackets and their contents are always upright. i can trap the contents, but the brackets elude me. and there's (almost) nothing worse than slanty brackets with upright contents. (this can apply in environments other than theorems, hence the desire for a "global" solution.)

@barbarabeeton \def\@cite#1#2{[{#1\if@tempswa , #2\fi}]}

@yo' <3

7:29 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- snarf! i've been staring at that on and off for a couple of days, and even an emacs search for [ didn't make it stand out. thanks. sigh.

@barbarabeeton I searched for \@cite :-)

@DavidCarlisle -- well, i looked for every instance of "cite", and surely examined that too. just blind, i guess.
i've just learned (from chuck bigelow) that hermann zapf has died. a very sad day.
7

@barbarabeeton oh shame
@barbarabeeton yesterday according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Zapf odd I didn't remember he lived in Darmstadt TUG should do something

@barbarabeeton Oh no. :( I'd like to write a blog post, what do you think?

@PauloCereda Please, do! Hermann Zapf deserves much more than a blog post, but we do what we can.

7:44 PM
@egreg Will do.

8:06 PM
@PauloCereda -- @egreg is right; zapf does deserve much more than a blog post. i was privileged to have some communication with him regarding an article in tugboat that was a translation from dante's "kom\"odie" article, which in turn was drawn from a presentation he made when he was named an honorary member. i will dig up the references for you, if you would like them.

@egreg, @barbara: do you have access to the blog? I really don't know how much to write, specially when it's about a very special person. :(
I drafted something.

@DavidCarlisle -- volker schaa, who will be at the meeting, had contact with zapf in connection with a reworking of some fonts, including euler and (i think) some of cm, for don's birthday several years ago. (reported in tugboat, i'm almost certain.) i've sent a note to volker, asking if he'd consider giving a remembrance of that project at the meeting.

Élie's comment to Mojca's email is very amusing:
> Assuming that you might be French (judging from your name)

I admit I almost read "judging from your arrogance and stubbornness" :)

8:21 PM
@PauloCereda I had a good chuckle reading this. :-)

@egreg: Thanks ... I've learned something (never used \addvspace personally so far). I think, I should wiki it

@ChristianHupfer Does my fix work? I didn't test it, of course.

@egreg: Nope, I replaced my wrong post with your false suggestion ;-) Of course, it worked :D Thanks

@ChristianHupfer David would say that Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item is almost surely \addvspace found in horizontal mode.

Question: Do you put a space between the unit and the % or not? I thought that was the exception, but I'm not sure.

8:24 PM
@egreg: That's still deeply inside (La)TeX core I've not progressed to that place ;-)

@egreg: could you help me reword my post? I'm stuck.

8:37 PM
@egreg and would I be correct in this context? (not sure which post you are talking about;-)

@Canageek I always use \SI{10}{\percent} so it has the (thin) space, but I'm not certain if this is considered correct in all fields.
Everybody knows that engineers are horrible with notation anyway, so I've never gotten any complaints about it... :-)

@DavidCarlisle A personal environment where the end part is {\addvspace{0.15in}}.
@PauloCereda I'm afraid I don't remember how one accesses the blog for editing.

@egreg tex.blogoverflow.com/wp-admin It should use your TeX.sx credentials and you are in. :)
@egreg: then try this link: tex.blogoverflow.com/?p=2379&preview=true and select Edit.

8:59 PM
@ArthurReutenauer Trying to hard?... I am not native English speaker... do you mean that I am too harsh to that guy or to patient with him?

9:10 PM
@PauloCereda I added something. Let's wait for something from @barbarabeeton

@egreg Wow, brilliant text! Thank you. <3

@PauloCereda there's blog post from Kaveh: bazargan.org/a-tribute-to-hermann-zapf
4

@michal.h21 Oh.

9:30 PM
@PaulGessler The only thing I admire about engineering papers is you standardized citations. Onto a format I don't like, but at least you all use the same one.
Wants to be Czar of Chemistry Typsetting so he can demand DOI based links in all citations, abandon using links to OpenURL, CrossCref, CAS, ACS, et al.

1 hour later…
10:33 PM
@barbarabeeton: can we publish? :)

11:15 PM
@barbarabeeton reports the death of Hermann Zapf. (November 8, 1918 – June 4, 2015) :-(

@MartinSchröder :(
We have a blog post on queue.
@Martin: will you go to this year's TUG?

@PauloCereda I have registred and am planning to come, if time permits (I just started a new job...)

@MartinSchröder What job is it?

11:31 PM
@barbarabeeton IMNHSO he deserves special editions of TUGBoat and DTK.
@StefanKottwitz Not TeX-related, sadly. Just a Java programmer. :-)

@MartinSchröder I wish I could go. :( I wanted your autograph in my TeXbook.
It would be awesome, a TeXbook filled with TeX people signatures. :)
@MartinSchröder ooh Java.

@MartinSchröder We can use TeX everywhere. Such as for documenting Java projects.
@MartinSchröder Had a nice moment. I was in a meeting in Miami. Carnival Corporation and Holland America Line wanted to discuss new ship's network designs. Screen was assigned to me, all saw a bunch of TeX code, I clicked the TeXworks "play" button, and a complex network architecture diagram was generated. Even no one of the tech guys dared to ask, what that code meant.
3

@StefanKottwitz he is a witch!
<3

@PauloCereda Sorcerer? Wizard? TeXer?

@StefanKottwitz All of the above. :)

11:44 PM
@PauloCereda (editing to add a lot above...)
