@egreg depends who's asking:-)
@cfr people have sent me stuff before, it can be useful. I don't accept general question MWE by mail (people trying to send a zip of entire thesis...) but if it looks like being a problem in one of my own packages and hard to reproduce if they send something offline it's easier to work out what the ssue is then just come back on site with a pointer to a patch or user error or whatever
@egreg I see you're using \ensuremath again

@DavidCarlisle Penitentiagite

cfr
12:40 AM
@DavidCarlisle Hmm... But that's compatible with the question being useful to more than just that user. (If it is a bug, the patch would help anybody)...

@cfr yes sure, but just commenting on not having a blanket ban on email contact (not that it would work in my case as you can get my email, real address, phone number etc from google, harder to make off site contact to some users:-)

hhh
Hello people! I would like to add a little teddy bear to my writing at the end to the right corner, just after references. Can you help me to do it?

I think it will look super sweat :)
I would not mind that only the upper body was visible, how can you do it in Latex?

cfr
1:03 AM
@DavidCarlisle Oh, right. Yes, I see. No, I wasn't suggesting that at all. I don't think it would be desirable even if it were enforceable. I had more tex.stackexchange.com/questions/213159/… in mind since it seems it would be more generally useful to have an MWE and a proper answer. (I'm not criticising anybody involved in this question. I just wondered about it from the point of view of usefulness to other users.)
@hhh \includegraphics{}?

hhh
I use it but how to reposition it?

cfr
\mbox{}\hfill\includegraphics{}?
@hhh \vfill if you want it at the bottom, too?

hhh
1:23 AM
I cannot understand, it does not go to the bottom :)

2 hours later…

3:50 AM
I moved the question here, too puzzled perhaps to think this -- I will look for this -- method I use so far is GUI editor and then just add separate pages later but this is slow process...

4:20 AM
How do I tighten the space around a \cdot?

1 hour later…
5:28 AM
@APerson: {\cdot}?
Uh! where is every one? Room looks deserted!

5:48 AM
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}
\[a\cdot b\]
\[a{\cdot} b\]
\end{document}

Good maen

8:25 AM
@ChristianHupfer Good morning Christian, we had our regulars table last night.
@ChristianHupfer Topic: How to modify a biblatex stile.

@Johannes_B: Good morning

8:42 AM
@Johannes_B: I unsubscribed from Dante mailing ... too much "Stammtisch" announcements

A new mailing list courtesy of Karl Berry

@JosephWright Yay!

@PauloCereda I might announce our meeting next week just to get things started

@JosephWright It's a great idea. :)

@ChristianHupfer Our Stammtisch isn't there. :-)

8:49 AM
@Johannes_B: I know ...

@ChristianHupfer The author of the texwelt blog post was talking.

@Johannes_B... i.e. you? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer No, not me.

@Johannes_B: Someone from TeX.SX?

@ChristianHupfer No, don't think so.

9:05 AM
@Johannes_B... ok... and what else happened in between, during my 'absence'?

@ChristianHupfer Not much i think. @PauloCereda accepted to give an interview.

@Johannes_B: Yes, the world is excited @PauloCereda ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Quack. :)

@PauloCereda: Naughty duck, naughty duck

@PauloCereda Time for some duckstep

9:13 AM
@Johannes_B Who let the ducks out? :)
@ChristianHupfer Oh nein!
:)

@PauloCereda: I will go to a Chinese or Indian restaurant this noon... Do I have to say more? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer You are so cruel, so so cruel. :)
When I go to a Chinese restaurant, I don't even dare staring at the aviary section of the menu. :)

I don't here the ping today, what is going on?
Did anybody notice the same name on the main page over and over again?

@Johannes_B Editing to fix the river-valley.tv links?

@JosephWright Oh, ok, i didn't check what edits were made.

9:16 AM
@JosephWright you there

@PauloCereda: \relax\section{Indian Restaurant}\subsection{Samosa} :D
@PauloCereda: Or \subsection{Karachi Murgh}...\begin{order}...\end{order} \begin{wait}...\end{wait}... \begin{eat}....

@subhamsoni Hello

@JosephWright Here we go.

@PauloCereda: It's going to be funny ...;-) (and I don't mean the meal ;-))

@ChristianHupfer ooh you naughty boy! :)

9:22 AM
@PauloCereda: I am not naughty,.... I am bad.... the evil is strong in me :D

@ChristianHupfer Ah! :)
In other news, does anybody here have Apple TV?

@Johannes_B: I hear the ping sound

@ChristianHupfer I changed my first PZ yesterday.
@PauloCereda: Nope, I only eat Apple ... the apple and drink Apple Juice ... the apple juice, but I have further noooooo inclination to use 'Apple' ;-)
@Johannes_B: PZ is a very confusing abbreviation in the TeX world...

@ChristianHupfer :)

9:29 AM
@ChristianHupfer Why?

@Johannes_B: Nobody expects "Profilzylinder" here :-P

@ChristianHupfer Great thing is, they sent a really nice and pretty girl.

@Johannes_B: Sent to which place? And why?
@PauloCereda: Oh, I see, he has gone...

@ChristianHupfer She was coming over with the extra PZ from Leipzig. Sent by the Hausverwaltung.

@ChristianHupfer It worked. :)

9:42 AM
@Johannes_B: Never mind, she's from Leipzisch @PauloCereda....
@PauloCereda: Your Voodoo worked :D

@ChristianHupfer I have seen few girls with eyes like that. Made my day.

@Johannes_B: And on other days when no such pretty girls appear, you still have us at TeX.SX to make your day....

@ChristianHupfer Yes i have :-)

@Johannes_B: Consider that always.... Girls come and go, but we remain
@Johannes_B: Ok, on second thought: It sounds like a menace :D

@ChristianHupfer Is there a way to tell how often a website is linked to?

9:47 AM
@Johannes_B: I don't know... I am no expert in HTML and all that stuff.

@ChristianHupfer I don't know how often i linked to wichtige Hinweise

@Johannes_B: I thought you are on the hunt for the Announcer badge here :D

@ChristianHupfer I think i already have that?

@Johannes_B: Yes, I just checked... I don't have that badge. I think the cause is that I don't like outside :D

@ChristianHupfer I was really really freaked out when i got that. I didn't notice that my user id is in the link.

10:17 AM
Must be a dupe: anyone find it?

Q: Bibliography not seen in the pdf file

subham soniI have created a bib file the contents of which are : @article{han2014semantic, title={Semantic context-aware service composition for building automation system}, author={Han, Son N and Lee, Gyu Myoung and Crespi, Noel}, journal={Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions on}, volume={10}...

Q: Bibliography does not appear

qwertyIn my .tex document I have [...] \nocite{*} \bibliographystyle{amsplain} \bibliography{bibliografie} \end{document} And I have the bibliografie.bib file in the same folder. However, why the bibliography does not appear at the end of the document? And bibliografie.bib contains the following: ...

@JosephWright... perhaps that one?
Well, I have to go... see you later on

10:50 AM
@JosephWright This one?

Q: Question mark instead of citation number

user16747I've browsed the forums and found a number of posts that have addressed this issue, but none of the solutions seem to work for me. @egreg No, the case here is needing \nocite to get any refs at all, i.e. the questioner didn't add any citations and thought LaTeX would assume 'all of them'

@JosephWright Here it is!

Q: empty ’thebibliography' enviroment

@egreg Great, I'll do some duping

@JosephWright I started one

3 hours later…
1:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle Will you talk at the UK-TUG meeting (perhaps LaTeX2e things?)

@JosephWright are we allowed to talk about secret plans? (I don't think I'll have any slides but I could probably talk about something if you are looking to fill a slot)

@DavidCarlisle Not sure about 'secret' :-)
@DavidCarlisle I'm not going with a lot of slides: will mainly be me and some live demos

@JosephWright of?
$ cvs commit -m "prescripts alignment"  mathml-spec.xml presentation-markup.xml changes.xml

@JosephWright in another window.. proper version control system:-)

@DavidCarlisle Two things: l3build and the Unicode case changing business
@DavidCarlisle I could talk about siunitx revision but it's a bit of a work-in-progress
@DavidCarlisle Of course

@JosephWright anyone else speaking?

1:52 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thus far I know of Simon Dales and @PauloCereda

I could probably say something about fixltx2e/patch stuff and allocation for a 15 minutes...

@DavidCarlisle Cool
@DavidCarlisle I'm sure there will be talks appearing on the day

2:09 PM
I thought I could edit posts even if I only change one character, but now in a review, I wanted to change Than to Then (which seems a common mistake in English, or at least that's what you see on the internet), but I couldn't. Is there a certain reputation needed to do so?

@Manuel Yes

Thinking about it, may be I can't edit only one character of a question/answer, may be it's only of my posts. In case one is granted that, I suspect that it would be global (i.e., in the reviews, in all the answers, in all the questions, etc.).
@JosephWright Yep, I thought I already achieved that, and that's why I was surprised, but thinking about it it might not be the case.

@Manuel I don't notice these things :-)

@JosephWright And David. :)

2:48 PM
@egreg Is a valid answer to the etextools question 'Use expl3' :-)

3:05 PM
@JosephWright :)
@JosephWright It has fancy things such as “multitoken \aftergroup"

3:18 PM
@egreg I know all about etextools :-)
Yay, we are first on the list!

Hi
I have created the table

@JosephWright Also its bugs?

\begin{table}[htbp]
\centering
\caption{List of Web Services Implemented}
\begin{adjustbox}{max width=\linewidth}
\begin{tabular}{rlll}
\toprule
\multicolumn{4}{c}{\textbf{WSDL URL}: http://localhost:1239/Service1.asmx?wsdl} \\
\midrule
\textbf{Name of the Service} & \multicolumn{1}{c}{\textbf{Description}} & \multicolumn{1}{c}{\textbf{Input}} & \multicolumn{1}{c}{\textbf{Output}} \\

\multirow{2}[2]{*}{creditAccount} & \multirow{2}[2]{*}{To credit a bank account} & 1. Account Number & 1. Message along with whether the credit was successful or not \\

Q: Creating tables with enumeration in LaTeX

subham soniI want to create the following table: The MWE is as follows: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} \begin{tabular}{|c|c|c|c|} \hline % after \\: \hline or \cline{col1-col2} \cline{col3-col4} ... Name of the Service & Description & Input & Output \\ creditAccount & To credit a bank ...

Only one thing left. I want to increase its font size a bit
But without making any changes in the documentclass
how do I do it?

@egreg Yes

@subhamsoni If your table is scaled down to fit, no matter how you enlarge the font it will be reduced to the same size.

3:27 PM

@JosephWright Studying that package can be regarded as a form of masochism. :)

hmmm ok. Actually I am preparing an elsevier paper
@Johannes_B thanks
I have made the changes

@subhamsoni To be honest, the guys at elsevier will reformat it.

ok :)

@subhamsoni \large ? oh no point you are scaling the table anyway (bad, bad:-)

3:47 PM
Hello everyone. Is there an easy way to add a caption to a tabular environment in a letter?

@FaheemMitha capt-of package \captionof{table}{zzzzz]

@FaheemMitha Or could you put it in a float like a table environment?

@DavidCarlisle table doesn't exist in letter. I Just tried that.
i think
@DavidCarlisle Um, sorry, don't follow.
Anyway, trying it.

@FaheemMitha If you have the need for tables in a letter, there might be something wrong ;-)

@Johannes_B Don't see why.

3:50 PM
@FaheemMitha well capt-of means you don't need a table env, presumably if you want a caption you'll want a table counter? If not just use a paragraph of text

@DavidCarlisle No, just a header would suffice, I think

@Johannes_B Dear Johannes, how are you? Figure~\ref{fig:picnic} shows a lovely time during the summer. Sadly the weather was terrible, as seen in Table~ref{tab:weather}.

@FaheemMitha If the tabular doesn't need to float, then you can format the header manually.

@FaheemMitha `textbf{Table:} this is a table

@David: I need a title for my talk. Suggestions? :)

3:52 PM
@AndrewCashner Would this go before \begin{tabular} or after?

@PauloCereda "1001 good things about emacs"

@PauloCereda ”Why Emacs is better than Vim”?

@PauloCereda now you have two suggested titles

@FaheemMitha If you're controlling it manually, just put it where you want to see it, before or after.

@AndrewCashner or at the side

3:53 PM
@PauloCereda Quack :-) There is a letter class in my texmfhome, that has figure floats implemented. But to be honest, i am using this for monthly reports, which occur to have a letter front page.

@AndrewCashner Ok
@DavidCarlisle Side?
@Johannes_B occur to have?

@FaheemMitha well why not:-) (probably more often used for images than tables) but really I just meant put it anywhere

@FaheemMitha Dear Sir: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. \par \begin{centering}\textbf{Ways that I Love Thee}\par \begin{tabular}{ll} Way 1 & ...

@DavidCarlisle Ok
@AndrewCashner Ok, I'll try that. Thanks.

@FaheemMitha The report and the letter should be two separated docs. But they aren't.

3:56 PM
@Johannes_B Two separated LaTeX docs?

@egreg, @David. :)
@Johannes_B ooh! :)

@Faheem Yes, the letter should be independent of my monthly report. As they are in practica two different things, they should be on the LaTeX side as well. But ... i have figure-floats in my letters (even though it feels like abusing).

@Johannes_B Are you using LaTeX for writing the reports, then? Interesting company you work for.

@Faheem My application letters use memoir class, FWITW

@faheem Yes, i use LaTeX.

3:59 PM
@AndrewCashner Applications for a job or something?
Not sure what FWITW means.
@Johannes_B Ok. This is for "work"?

I bet i am the only part-time janitor in the whole world using LaTeX.
@FaheemMitha See above ;-)

@Faheem "For what it's worth" Yes, job applications, so I include a CV with extensive custom formatting and other supplemental materials. I need the full options of the larger package.

@Johannes_B oh. That does not sound like fun.
@AndrewCashner That's more usually rendered as FWIW

@FaheemMitha Oh right--what was the T for? I'm not a very seasoned chat user. :)

@AndrewCashner Dunno. It was your T. :-)

4:03 PM
@FaheemMitha Why not? I am moderator in two forums, this is also janitorial. There is absolutely no difference in keeping a stairwell clean, or a LaTeX site. Ii guess @joseph will agree with me.

@Johannes_B Depends on what kind of janitor you are talking about, I guess.
And where.

@faheem no toilets ;-)
$ wtf is fwitw
Gee... I don't know what fwitw means...
$ wtf is fwiw
FWIW: for what it's worth

@Johannes_B Ok, good.

@AndrewCashner ^^^

I generally hate repetitive manual tasks. I cope really badly with them
I used to have to grade tests and things. It was terrible.

4:07 PM
anybody there plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I am in SERIOUS MESSSSSSSSSSSSS

@subhamsoni Calm down.
CALM DOWN
;-)

@Johannes_B :)

In Elsevier two column format

@Johannes_B Exactly. :) I'm about to set my duck in rage mode. :)

I have some images in column and some images in opposite column
they both have merged

4:09 PM
@subhamsoni Is that LaTeX output?

yesssssssss

@subhamsoni width=\linewidth

@subhamsoni They are overlapping because you need to set their corresponding widths accordingly.

ok ok got it :)
all my images are in textwidth
I will change them and come back

4:16 PM
@PauloCereda I tried to put question in a single line
sorry if I didn't do again
I need one more small help!

@subhamsoni you should ask questions on site not in chat and with minimal example code, but you know that.

@DavidCarlisle ok question comin up!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
Just sticking something above the table works, but it doesn't stay with the table as a unit.

4:32 PM
@FaheemMitha Could you put the whole thing in a minipage or other box?

@AndrewCashner I guess I could. Is the table env make like a unit?

@Faheem It's a float, so it stays together as a unit but its location on the page is flexible. A minipage stays together and goes where you put it.

Sorry, that should have been "does the table env make a unit"?

@FaheemMitha box, yes

@AndrewCashner Right. I'm a bit unclear re the capt-of thing David was suggesting earlier.

4:35 PM
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{blindtext}
\usepackage{booktabs}
\usepackage{parskip}
\newenvironment{examtable}{
	\par\smallskip
	\begin{minipage}{\linewidth}
		\centering
	}
	{
	\end{minipage}
	\par\smallskip
}
\begin{document}
\blindtext
\begin{tabular}{c}
	hi faheem
\end{tabular}
\blindtext
\clearpage

\blindtext
\begin{examtable}
	\begin{tabular}{ccc}
		\toprule
		a & b & c\\
		\midrule
		1 & 2 & 3\\
		4 & 5 & 6\\
		\bottomrule
	\end{tabular}
\end{examtable}
\blindtext
\end{document}
@FaheemMitha There, everything is in a minipage and can't be broken across pages.

@Johannes_B That's handy, thanks.

@FaheemMitha Fix the spaces to use \addvspace and you should be fine.
@FaheemMitha It is the exact same example from a few days back.

@Johannes_B Few days back?
Oh, that other question you answered for me?
If so, that one was "medskip". :-)

@FaheemMitha Ok, so not the exact same ;-)
@FaheemMitha I made some changes later that day.

@Johannes_B :-)

4:51 PM
@ChristianHupfer: Sorry for the song yesterday. :) I'll provide a better one: youtube.com/watch?v=z4qAFuk651c

5:04 PM
Is a \multirow always centered vertically in the cell?

@AndrewCashner Don't know, never used it. Using package booktabs makes multirow kinda obsolete.

@egreg you under-estimate the power of picture mode

@Johannes_B Hmm, I am using memoir which means booktabs functionality is supposed to be built in. Doing research...
@Johannes_B I can't see how to do a multirow in either memoir or booktabs documentation. Do you know if there's a way?

@AndrewCashner You misunderstood me there. If you set the table right (booktabs gives some tips in the documentation), you don't need multirow anymore.

@Johannes_B So you can't do it because you shouldn't do it.

5:15 PM
@AndrewCashner You can do it, but you shouldn't ;-)

Opinions: Is \\[1ex] \midrule in table overkill?

@AndrewCashner it depends. Also if you are doing it all the time better just to change the space around midrule (booktabs has a parameter for that)

@DavidCarlisle Because \midrule already adds some space, right? I tried without the [1ex] and in this case it wasn't necessary.

5:32 PM
have a good day

@AndrewCashner yes the space is the difference between \midrule and \hline, and also why vertical lines don't work with booktabs

6:08 PM
Je n'ai pas dû être assez explicite !
Das funktioniert nicht. Doesn't work. ça ne marche pas.
I read the exact same error description by the exact same user in three languages.

6:52 PM
Anyone speak Greek?

@PauloCereda: That song is even worse :-(
@Johannes_B: Is .blg a file extension to some format recognized by some application and interpreted as graphics?

@ChristianHupfer Windows systemleistung (or whatever it is called)

7:07 PM
@JosephWright I can answer questions about Greek, but know not a word. ;-)

@Johannes_B: Pfui, Windows

@ChristianHupfer The german quote is from last month, the french from june 2013.

@JosephWright: I know that the greek word elektron means amber ;-) That's basically my knowledge of Greek ...

@ChristianHupfer I know the alphabet by heart.

@Johannes_B: Some geometrodynamical time differential? ;-)
@egreg:Me too... ;-)

7:11 PM
@ChristianHupfer I looked at all questions, seems tha the whole concept of using pdflatex, biber, pdflatex, pdflatex and showing the contents of the blg file was lost every few months. But it is definitely the same user.

@Johannes_B: It's a little bit useless to post in French in a German forum

@ChristianHupfer It was posted in a french forum, i just quoted.

@Johannes_B: Ok, my fault :D
I should definitely stop answering questions from unregistered users... it's of no use
Have a nice time, I will return later on

@ChristianHupfer See you, and if want to listen to a very clear statement: youtube.com/watch?v=GNxRnTqFX9w

7:49 PM
My old Dell machine is about to die. :(
I'm already in progress of acquiring another one. :)

8:30 PM
@PauloCereda you could put it on your shopping list (I have some macros for that....)

@DavidCarlisle ooh I saw that. :) Epic answer, as always. :)
@David: by the way, speaking of macros, I finally managed to add support for syntactic macros in my expander. :)

@PauloCereda: Or put it on your christmas wish list :-P

@ChristianHupfer I can't, I need the machine. :)

8:42 PM
@PauloCereda: Can't you repair something or upgrade the hardware?

@ChristianHupfer It's not worth. :( At least, I get a new machine for the next 4-5 years.

@PauloCereda: Yes, that's an aspect, but I am always reluctant to set up a new machine/install a new OS version... reconfiguration the stuff is sometimes tedious

@ChristianHupfer In my case, I love doing that. :)
And the machine might arrive just in time for Fedora 21. :)

@PauloCereda: I'll hope it will do so... happy reinstalling :-P

@ChristianHupfer Thanks, but I need to order it first. :)

8:52 PM
@PauloCereda: Just do it

1 hour later…
10:12 PM
I should stop reviewing First Posts today... 10 of them are enough ;-)

10:24 PM
Have a nice time

10:42 PM
Good evening. I need to debug something - can somebody tell me where can I find the definition of tabular* (using KOMA)?

@DavidCarlisle Yes, but xcolor is not involved. And there's only one author of colortbl
@Jörg In the LaTeX kernel.

@Jörg texdef -t latex -c scrreprt tabular*
macro:#1->\setlength \dimen@ {#1}\edef \@halignto {to\the \dimen@ }\@tabular

@Jörg From latex.ltx:
   5005 \expandafter \let \csname endtabular*\endcsname = \endtabular
   5006 \def\tabular{\let\@halignto\@empty\@tabular}
   5007 \@namedef{tabular*}#1{%
   5008  \setlength\dimen@{#1}%
   5009    \edef\@halignto{to\the\dimen@}\@tabular}

@egreg posted a (documented I'm sure) markup that doesn't generate the error
@egreg or does it use array version?

@DavidCarlisle Here's a better patch:
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{colortbl}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{etoolbox}

\makeatletter
\pretocmd\start@align{\CT@everycr{\the\everycr}}{}{}
\makeatother

\begin{document}
\begin{tabular}{p{.5\textwidth}}
{\begin{align}
 S = \pi r ^2
 \end{align}}
\end{tabular}
\end{document}

10:56 PM
@egreg Thanks

@egreg well perhaps better way of getting that patch in. I'm not 100% convinced it's the right patch though. (both packages grab private copies of \everycr...

@DavidCarlisle Tell the OP that using align in a tabular is not a great idea.

@egreg well clearly since it generates a tex error it must be user error

11:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle Of course. Just find the misplaced \omit

@egreg that one Italian word I know seems useful at the moment, M is showing us how to get different tones on his trombone....

@DavidCarlisle I can imagine! :)
@DavidCarlisle Also a French horn can produce wonderful pernacchi
